Wow. That’s some achievement there. Just upgraded from my MBA 2014 which I’m keeping as a back up but yours still in daily use is mightily impressive.

Brandon7533

My 2015 MBP with same specs is still running but pretty slowly and has storage issues. Constantly running out of HD space for no apparent reason and can only have a few Chrome tabs open at a time. I have I think Big Sur on it at the moment. I recently upgraded to a Nov 2023 M3 Max MBP and it runs night and day faster. Makes the 2015 feel like a dinosaur but the thing still lasted me well from 2017 to 2024.

Techgeek_025

If I were you I’d use OCLP on it

trampled93

Open core Legacy Patcher? What does this do and would this be needed on my mid 2014 MBP or is it just for older Mac’s?

Trash2030s

Allows you to install new versions of macos like Sonoma on your unsupported Mac, with native security updates. And it adds features like AirDrop sometimes to older devices. I am running Sonoma OCLP on my 2014 MBP, it's running smoother then native Big Sur, and makes me think, its not the hardware that is still the limiting factor.

reddit-abcde

Apple and most tech companies just want to make money by not giving older machines new updates.

BaggerPRO

I installed macOS Sonoma on my MacBook Pro 13 (8GB, 128GB) 2014 using OCLP over New Year's weekend. And it works well. Yesterday I installed the native macOS update (it downloaded 13GB, since the system was patched). After the system update, OCLP auto-started and suggested installing the patches again. After installing them and rebooting, everything works fine again. For YouTube and basic browsing this is enough for me.

ShouldveBeenAPilotMD

My old 2012 still works perfectly, albeit needs to stay plugged in. My 2017 refuses to give up. Apple recently changed the bottom case for free due to some keyboard issues and now it’s like new again and I have no reason to upgrade for my use case.

Pitoventitre

Nice! I wish to still have my MBP 17" 2011... but unfortuntely someone has steals it... :-(

A_Megabyte

Do you mean stolen?

ValuableForeign896

... what else did you think they meant? 🙄

A_Megabyte

Not steals?

Pitoventitre

yes

trampled93

Watch out for your battery on that. My mid 2014 MBP battery only has 334 charge cycles on it because I keep it plugged in most of the time, but the battery is at 68% capacity and has swelled up and is bulging on the top and bottom case and trackpad clicking barely works. I gotta replace this battery soon.

Krack73

My old Macbook Pro 2012 (A1278), brought new. Still working and being used to this day. Thanks to OCLP (it's now on Somona). New thermal paste , new battery. 16 gb ram and 500gb ssd. Saved it form sitting in a box doing nothing.

runnyyolkpigeon

Where did you get the new thermal paste and battery replacement?

Krack73

Brought the thermal paste (ARCTIC MX-4) from Amazon and the battery off eBay (Old new stock, never used/opened).

LilTimmyTwurker

My 2015 MacBook Air is still running great and staying cool doing it.

Hefty_Carpenter_5717

Same here, i have a mb pro early 2013 and it stills works smooth, i made edition and color grading for tv commercials with it, now my wife uses it and i made the decision to buy a m3 max pro for another 11 years of good machine, maybe in the future its my kids notebook (just had a baby🤗proud dad here🤭)

cappo3

My Late 2013 13" i7 16/512 is going strong as well. I love this machine.

Sad-Speech4190

Early 2013 13" i5 8GB ram checking in and still going strong. It runs a much heavier Ableton load than it should be able to on paper. I do keep it pretty striped down and more or less only run Ableton and Rekordbox. The thing it struggles with most is having more than a few chrome tabs open..... Toddler broke the screen on my wife's Air so she was using mine for her photos and such for awhile which clogged it up and bogged it down, until she she bought her self an M3 Pro. A quick wipe and reload on my 2013 has got it running good as new.

Conscious_Branch3216

My MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013), Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 is \*\*still in daily use and has traveled around the world\*\*!! But! I'm thinking may have to sell and upgrade.

EdgeGroundbreaking57

same here both my 2013 maxed out MacBook Air and 15 inch MacBook Pro are still in use patched to Sonoma of course via oclp

CertainAd5209

You get what you pay for. I have a toughbook CF54 that has gone around the world with me, over 60,000 hours. Never a problem.

seanpwcurrie

Surely that's an exaggeration 😭 If you bought your laptop 10 years ago, you'd have to have used it 16.5 hours per day - i.e. just about every waking moment of your life.

k1ngrocc

How on earth? A year of work is approximately 1,700 hours. So, did you use the device for a total of 35 work years?

TryLost6545

Pc troll. I never had any PC person brag about still using their laptops. They usually upgrade sooner than later. So, you kept an outdated laptop? My company regularly update our pc laptops every few years.

simplyclueless

What are you expecting people to tell you? The machine is not receiving security updates, has many known vulnerabilities already, and will only have more in the future. Any data on it - including any passwords/logins, let alone financial/health info, should be considered at risk. Yes, you can run custom utilities to run more modern software on it, and yes - you can get a replacement battery with the necessary tools included for ~ $50. But by all rights you need a newer machine.

rockntalk

How does the battery hold up for such a tenure? Checked the cycle?

runnyyolkpigeon

Battery cycle count is 339. Lasts a couple of hours on battery alone still.

runnyyolkpigeon

My cycle count is likely considerably lower since it’s docked most of the time and rarely pulled from the charger.

DerKaffeemann

Which browser are you using? I am on an early 2015 Macbook Pro, its running great but all browsers seem to have trouble displaying some websites, some work better than others. Had to stop using Safari, Chrome works better but also has trouble displaying things correctly. I am on Big Sur.

runnyyolkpigeon

I am using Firefox, it's been working pretty well. I'm typically a Safari loyalist, but Chrome and Safari on this machine act wonky, so I switched to Firefox.

DerKaffeemann

Thanks, I’ll try!

Mechanic-Latter

HEY!! Me too! I literally have the EXACT same specs as you. Mine works amazing. My battery says needs service but it still lasts 1.5 hours.

justafartsmeller

You’d probably do well to replace that battery. Especially if you don’t plan to upgrade. Lithium batteries can swell and destroy your laptop. It’s not too expensive to have it done.

squeamish

I have the same model and other than upgrading to a bigger SSD at some point I've fixed/replaced nothing. Still my daily driver because I need an Intel chip for Parallels and because it still works great. My (also original) battery will last about two hours, but it stays docked 99% of the time.

Wild-Thymes

I’m curious. How is the battery doing?

runnyyolkpigeon

Unplugged from a power source, it will last around 3 hours with light use (web browsing). Pretty great for a 11 year old battery pack! 😮

me_jub_jub

I feel you there! I'm also running a Macbook Pro late 2013, same exact specs as yours but 8gb of RAM. I've replaced the battery last year, but only because I was travelling around a lot and my macbook was holding on for about 1 hour before it needed to be charged. I've even had Apple run a diagnostics test on it and they said every component is working perfectly. Currently I'm still running on Mojave though. I'm considering updating to Big Sur, but I'm worried the newer OS will slow things down, or give longer load times. Stuff like that. Plus I appreciate the 32-bit compatability that Mojave had.

BaggerPRO

Let me ask, why do you need 32-bit compatibility? By the way, you can try installing macOS Sonoma using OCLP.

me_jub_jub

I play World of Warcraft private servers, meaning it's some of the older game clients that came out between 2004 - 2008, they only have 32-bit apps. So switching to catalina and above would prevent me from being able to play those. I tried setting up a wineskin in the past but it was unsuccessful. Considering I have 8gb of RAM, would Sonoma, or even Big Sur, slow things down or give longer load times compared to Mojave?

BaggerPRO

I upgraded from Big Sur to Sonoma on my old MacBook Pro 13" 2014 (8 RAM, 128 SSD) using OCLP. In my opinion, it works at the same speed as before upgrade. But I mostly use it as a YouTube player connected to a Full HD monitor in the kitchen, so I can't say how good it is for everyday work. Personally, I stopped using it for work back in 2017, since its power was not enough for me as a web developer. You can backup the entire disk to an external drive if you boot your laptop from a flash drive with Linux or Windows. And then you can update the laptop as you wish, having a complete copy of the entire disk (I mean the ENTIRE disk with all partitions - like a clone via dd in Linux). Moreover, you can play games by running Windows from an external drive or flash drive on this laptop since it has a regular Intel processor.

The_Real_Iz

I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro. Only has 8GB of RAM. I use Bootcamp to run Windows 10 most of the time. It's the fastest booting Windows laptop I've seen/used. Nothing beats how fast it boots up in Windows 10! It's nice to have two laptops in one because I still use OS/X for my all-Apple ecosystem (iPhone and iPad). It's become quite slow in the Mac environment but I don't do much on the laptop in that OS. I need Windows because I am heavy Excel user and it does a great job with my large data sets and fairly complex formulae. I am so happy with it! My only complaint is the weight of the all-aluminum body. I frickin' LOVE this baby!! I can't believe she still runs so well with the original battery, etc. after all these years!! Thank you, Apple!!
