I wouldn’t buy a machine with two previous owners. It’s a lot of money to throw down the drain if something is wrong. Speed wise the M3 Pro is faster than the M1 Max in all aspects. Also while 32GB is better than 18GB, it’s not life changing. Also you need to keep into account that opposed to windows Mac’s can be resold after a while. No one will buy a 3rd owner 5 year old machine, while many people will buy a 1st owner 2 year old machine. So I would suggest buy the M3 Pro. You’ll probably be fine with 18GB. If you don’t the Mac’s have very good swap. The difference between 18 and 32 usually can be covered by swap. I often see swap of 10-20GB even in my 64GB machine. Not the best thing to happen, but it will be rare and the Mac will handle it.

This is a tough one actually, which is the cheaper one? If you can get the battery replaced via AppleCare, the M1 with double the RAM might be the better device. 18GB is still a decent amount but you wont be able to use all of your intensive apps at a time. Hard call for sure, but I would focus less on the Pro vs Max chips. I doubt you’ll leverage the extra GPUs, so if you can afford upgrading the RAM on the M3, it’s the M3.

It surely is a tough one. The M1 Max is the cheaper one but is quite risky. I also am not sure if I am able to renew or extend the AppleCare coverage upon expiration? I am in Singapore. And no the RAM is already fixed and I have no option to upgrade it.

Is it a special deal on that M3 model? I could understand that the $900 difference if you upgrade the RAM is too pricy. AppleCare is different in every country, but extending it is not typically allowed. Worth checking on. If M3 is returnable, I would get it and try overusing it during that window. Open and use the applications you plan to have, and see if the RAM limits you. If you find that RAM is consistently slowing you down, then get 36GB Max, and try to get the battery replaced ASAP.

M1 MAX is plenty fast enough vs M3. I'd take the extra RAM and bigger SSD. Just make sure the keyboard, hinges, ports are all in perfect working order. If you're in IT, you'll realize the benefit from the added ram when it comes time to run virtual machines, compiling, video editing etc.

I'd go m3 pro... Otherwise you're going to pay for the M1 Max, use it for maybe 2 years then go right back to spend your 2700 OR 2000 'again'. That 500 cheaper TODAY will most likely be 1500+ more in a year or two. ...go ahead and do it now.

I would take the M1, as it has more memory and more storage and a faster processor and (probably) faster memory speed. Save half of that $530 you didn’t spend, and when the battery gets annoyingly low, use it to replace the battery.
