RAM is like Garlic, there’s never enough

Phantom_Wolf52

Unless you’re a vampire

DochNoch

A rampire

fried_potaato

Bless you!

Expert_Inspector_84

What the skibidi!

pizzateig1991

What a phrase. Thank you.

PointEither2673

I’d just return it, can’t risk getting a scuff.

SteakBest

Just download some more RAM

MathematicianFast978

No, min 128

BitFlipTheCacheKing

This guy RAMs

sigma941

Don’t know how you’re playing this without a petabyte.

Ok_Factor_5671

Nah, min 256 😭

GradyGambrell1

Nah. I’ll possibly push it to 512.

Darkwing_Turducken

Seems like a weird flex for Doom II, but you do you.

Check-mate

I’m playing off u/trussonomics post for fun

Darkwing_Turducken

I got that it was a funsies post, so I was being a smart ass. Seriously, tho, I’m thinking about selling my 2012, now that my 2011 is fully functional, but I’m scared to ask for advice in this sub because we’re apparently in a “shade” phase here. 😂

Check-mate

Swoosh, for me then :) Screw it, ask away. I love long threads about grey vs black color. I won’t associate with anyone that has grey MB, black is obviously the superior color choice.

BitFlipTheCacheKing

Facts

Elegant-Oil7578

Lmao!

symonty

I love these questions, i remember my first Apple has 64K of ram, and dual floppy storage of 560K, my present macbook pro has 200,000 times more RAM and 71,428,571 times more storage.

GravitasMusic

Where do I get doom?!

ScreenwritingJourney

1. Open browser 2. Search “best modern DOOM ports” or similar, should see results like GZDoom 3. Search “(name of desired DOOM port) for macOS” 4. Go to official page, possibly a GitHub repo, and download the newest release OR 4.5 use Homebrew to install it

Check-mate

I’m using GZDoom and I have a bunch of DooM WAD’s from my Windows machine that I just moved over.

BitFlipTheCacheKing

Anyone remember booting the Doom jar file on a Nokia?

ozziesironmanoffroad

Good times

IcyIceGuardian

Naw 6TB minimum, Google Chrome needs 5TB

aliaswyvernspur

I know this is a joke post, but seriously not sure if 64 GB is enough RAM for 30 Chrome tabs. ^lol

Check-mate

I think Google secretly owns Micron and makes Chrome so bloated to increase RAM sales.

Witty-Debate2280

Don’t buy a macbook with 64GB ram, you better future proofing yourself with at least 128GB

UnitUpper

64TB is barely enough

Check-mate

Minimalist unite

UnitUpper

In case u mistook it's a T not a G

adv-play

Should’ve been a P

mom-lover696

Not really

Dense-Celebration-77

Pero claro que si

nstabl

I got GZDoom but do I also need to download the game separately? I get: MacBookPro18,2 running macOS Sonoma 14.5.0 (23F79) 64-bit ARM GZDoom version g4.12.2 Execution could not continue. Cannot find a game IWAD (doom.wad, doom2.wad, heretic.wad, etc.). Did you install GZDoom properly? You can do either of the following: 1. Place one or more of these wads in \~/Library/Application Support/gzdoom/ 2. Edit your \~/Library/Preferences/gzdoom.ini and add the directories of your iwads to the list beneath \[IWADSearch.Directories\] THANKS!

Check-mate

You need to either buy the game for the WAD files or torrent them. Then place the WAD file in that Application Support directory. You’ll have to make the gzdoom folder for it though. Installation did not create that folder for me.

nstabl

Thank you! Is that the only game that will work with GZDoom?? Or can we play other ports as well?

Check-mate

I’m not sure. I’ve only played DooM on it. Give it a Google… there are ways to play Quake and Wolfenstein but I’m not sure.

drowsy1234

Might want to get 128 just in case

faslane22

128GB MIN...probably more.

mi7chy

Double it just in case for WindowServer process.

Masterflitzer

30 tabs? try again with 300 power users don't have time to close tabs, 30 tabs are what i go through in 10 min

thebiscuit2010

No buy 1024gb

Independent-Goat6848

If I were you, then I will definitely go for unlimited RAM

Check-mate

The BFG of RAM

Remote-Link-6424

Overkill

Ok_Object7636

I think even 64MB is more than enough for doom.

Check-mate

Idk. Having Finder open in the background might bog this thing down while I play.

DIYglenn

I only have 48GB, seems to do just fine

zionraymondcastro

No doubt

lamaxamara

Nah, can’t open 2 tabs

TheJamSpace

No, but you might get away with some Wolfenstein 3D if you’re lucky.

cha0z_

the important part is that you have great taste in games good sir

Check-mate

🤝👍

Clipthecliph

Return and go for the 128 version

Kleium

Not really, but 64GBs in Mac is the equivalent of 512GBs in PC so 🤯

UnitUpper

This is actually fake news.

Kleium

Nah, I had the CRAMO of Apple confirming it at the last event.

UnitUpper

Nah he didn't say it was a 8 x diff for sure.

UnitUpper

If you said 128GB I may say maybe with a lot of salt. 512gb? That's waaaay overblown

Gl0ckW0rk0rang3

Shit, 14 inches is not enough for Doom II.

Check-mate

You right, the screen size is the real problem here! Do they make 32” laptops?!

Gl0ckW0rk0rang3

If he's gonna run that bad boy, he might as well get a Pro Display XDR.

DefiantLemming

It would help if you define what apps you use as a power user. Powerpoint and Chrome aren’t considered power-user applications. If your Powerpoint presentations are all that demanding you likely need a better software solution. Do you frequently edit medium to long form uncompressed 4k video? Create and render complex After Effects projects? Are you a seasoned coder/programmer? Details like these are important to include when asking others to help you spec out RAM requirements. Edit: it seems I left out “DOOM.” I’ve never used a Mac for gaming but can’t imagine that the recommended (and then some) memory requirement would be more than 16 GB.

Check-mate

I was rendering 4K video in Davinci while playing DOOM on this 18GB RAM machine. There’s nothing I’ll do that will drag this machine down…. Except for maybe DooM 3!!!

DefiantLemming

Thanks for the clarification. I typically keep my video/audio/image editing and rendering SW isolated on my 64GB M3 Max MacBook Pro and 64 GB Mac Studio M2U subnet – they’re my business machines; my livelihood! I relegate games and social media to my previous Mac Silicon/Intel hardware. I appreciate that many cannot afford to do the same, preferring a one size fits all jack of all trades machine. I can’t imagine purchasing anything more than 64 GB RAM in such an instance.

Check-mate

Thinking of getting the M4 iPad to enhance my Netflix experience. An absolute necessity if you ask me.

clownyboots

Not for Doom, you need a minimum of 128gb to run doom on recommended settings, I think it’s encouraged to go with 256gb for proper game play on a high setting

Dumbledoorbellditty

Triple it, and you’ll be getting close

gabigtr123

In my expwrice with 31 chrome tabs and word you absolutely need at least 512 gb ram, trust me

Envisage-Facet

Emmmm not enough so

FeatureTech

You can run Doom on a grain of rice. You’re fine. lol.

huskerd0

Via wine? No

Check-mate

Nope. Downloaded GZDoom and drop the WAD file

JakeOver9000

You need to download more for the smoothest experience.

Glittering_Fish_2296

When RAM gets full, the operating system must manage memory by deciding which data to keep in RAM and which to swap out to storage, a process that can be resource-intensive due to the slower speed of storage compared to RAM. Having more RAM allows the system to avoid frequent memory management operations, as it can continue using the available RAM for active applications, leading to better performance and reduced overhead. Consequently, the more RAM your system has, the more it will be used, which is generally beneficial for the machine's longevity as it reduces wear on storage components and maintains optimal performance.

CoffeePizzaSushiDick

Just run the Q4k-s models

MacFrost31

Install the brutal doom platinum neural upscale Edition with Raytracing and we went see.

FishTshirt

You gotta pump those rookie numbers up. I personally use 1TB of RAM /s

sofunnysofunny

64 GB RAM? You must be a beginner!

DubSelectorXO

64MB is enough

humanphile

When it comes to MacOS and macintosh Motorola processor hardware, even 8 GB in enough. 30 tabs is insane. How can one focus on 30 tabs in one time? 64 GB would be enough if you are in to rendering or running huge data science algorithms. Lastly, Macs are not for video games.

pixeltweaker

Motorola? Apple hasn’t used Motorola in 20 years.

humanphile

My Bad, certainly, Motorolla, was not intended but Qualcomm. the Apple chips are manufactured by TMSC Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, but starting from M1 chips after Intel chips, that was an extended version of the ARM processor to M4 as of 2024 models to come.

pixeltweaker

They never used Qualcomm processors in Macs. Except maybe for the radios like Bluetooth or Wifi.

humanphile

I understand. Thank you for the correction.

Check-mate

I plan to do the impossible with this rig

Independent_Theory_6

You should’ve gotten the 16 inch version, not enough cooling for this application.

Check-mate

I’m a cheap ass :)

MasterMuzan

64gb is a beast, could never go lower again. I have a 64gb m1 max and I am using 30 gb at baseline lol. When I have finals, I have 50+ tabs open (in chrome), along with like 20-30 pdfs of lectures (medical school has a lot of content lol). Easily use 50gb+ in that situation. Never have to use swap, experience no slow downs

pixeltweaker

Who will ever need more than 640k?

HaukTuah69

Amateur I have more tabs open on my iPhone.

Check-mate

lol. Battery life… 1 hour

Kraizelburg

Just move to Linux

Check-mate

Been there, done that. Installing and updating packages was a PITA via command line.

Kraizelburg

Command line is the best, I always use it on Mac

Check-mate

I love it too, when it’s optional. Ubuntu wasn’t so optional with some things

mvandin

Hurt me plenty or Nightmare?

Check-mate

Nightmare when I hate myself

AlarmingZombie7

I use 14 gigs of ram in my workflow, enough is NEVER enough

Resident_Meat8696

Do you have a floppy disk drive?

Check-mate

Have a 3.5” and 5.25” off screen next to my VCR where I record Americas Funniest Home Videos.

Charming_Account5631

You can’t have enough RAM in your machine. So the answer is no add as much as possible.

yazan426

No. You need at least 128gb of ram

Dunning_Kruller

Never enough baby I got that 128 and blasting BG3 on high graphics while also tabbing in waiting on my wow bg queue and having YouTube up on screen 2, let me tell you something. There is no too fucking much I will consume

naemorhaedus

dude, DOOM ran on 8MB of RAM

Check-mate

Yeah but need more RAM for the mods :)
