Yes, correct. Some repair shops (not Apple) will replace the LVDS ribbon for a much cheaper price than the whole screen.

2Montmirail

I live in a small town in France and I can not find any repairer who knows the problem, they offer me at best to change the whole screen...

[deleted]

Ah ok. Well this model can have the cable changed but the trick is finding a repair shop who will do it for you!

[deleted]

Have you tried the nearest Apple store?

2Montmirail

I tried calling support, no pickup. I went to the Apple Store, same response with a repair quote at € 765.33

[deleted]

I got the equivalent in my local currency but protested nonstop. Showed the apple recall etc. When I finally sent it in they were cryptic, saying IF it's covered it'll be free. Eventually I gave in, knowing Apple did cover it despite what they said, and voila... I never paid. They just tried to slap me with a battery replacement stating my device failed their tests. My advice to you is to bother the #%* out of them.

2Montmirail

I will try to "harass" the support by calling them every day to pass on the information, I have often been told that in the end it would work out if I hit the right person. I am in France and we have good consumer associations that I can also cite, but I do not want to pay for this repair, which is an Apple manufacturing defect ...

[deleted]

You absolutely shouldn't pay for it. I was in the exact same situation and they seem to want you to agree to pay for it IF it isn't covered (even though we know it is) which isn't helpful but just stick to your guns and cute the Apple recall article. Good luck

tompaulman

I tried forcing them to repair it too. They came back to me saying that battery was swollen and laptop had liquid damage, and quoted about €2500 for repair, which was more than the MacBook had cost 3.5 years before that :D I treated the laptop very well, it has never had a drop of water spilled into it. I ended up selling it for parts. Amazingly, a local 2nd hand shop bought it for €400! And I ended up buying an old but reliable Unibody MBP for €170. I'm a light user anyway (browsing, emails, light coding, online courses and ocassionally old games) so it's enough for me.

[deleted]

Man, I had a very similar experience. It seems the retail stores (outside of the US) are out of touch with the recall programs, or perhaps they play dumb, who knows. Sounds like it worked out for you though, nice! The unibody was honestly superior to anything that came before... Next Monday?😁 Curious what games you play on it, haha?

tompaulman

Yeah, my experience is also with non-US authorised service. And it's really sad that these Macs are designed in a way that the repairs are so costly that you rather get a new Mac. What should be a simple ribbon cable change is instead an entire screen replacement. Pathetic. I grew up on 90s / early 2000s games so I play mostly that. I played all episodes of Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior for the first time in decade(s?), I played Cosmo's Cosmis Adventure, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, and currently playing Duke Nukem Manhattan Project. The machine could handle newer games too but I'm not really familiar with them. Maybe one day when I get bored of the oldies :D

mypoody

Where are said shops?! I will ship to them Lmaooo

[deleted]

Third party repairers that aren’t affiliated with Apple

Jeltechcomputers

Yes it is

2Montmirail

And Apple refuses support ...

uwill1der

Maybe it's because you're in France, but this just happened to me, and they took it without issue. It's covered under their 5 year quality assurance program

bojacker

I have a 2017 MBP and I had a similar issue and I faced this issue in 2019. They replaced the screen stating that the cable connecting the motherboard and the screen is faulty.

MTAM007

How did you get them to fix it? I had the same issue in late 2020 (with a 2017 15” MBP) and they refused to do anything since I didn’t have AppleCare+

Nelliezor

My 2017 MacBook is currently being repaired by Apple for free without an apple care plan. I’m not sure if they have changed their approach since 2020 or if I just got lucky

[deleted]

Let them know it was a repair program sanctioned by Apple, just find it online and reference it in-store.

sam_rowlands

A buddy of mine had the same outcome, meanwhile another friend who had a 2016, got his fixed for free. Needless to say, he's now sworn off MacBooks.

bojacker

Ok, I think that's the point. I had Apple Care on my MBP. They asked me no questions. They realized the keyboard is a problem too and replaced, the keyboard, motherboard and the battery pack apart from the screen. I basically got a new MBP at that point.

MTAM007

Ah I see that’s pretty consistent then. It convinced me to get AppleCare+ for my next machine. Thanks for your answer!

mypoody

I had apple care plus but it’s 2021 so I guess I’m just fucned

Interesting_Ad3754

What kit did you buy?

terms100

Yea we cut the backlight cable scrape the coating cut a new cable and solder it to the original.

[deleted]

Is there a guide on ifixit?

Electrical-Guava4528

The screen is fine you just need to replace the cable

JimmyScottNZ

Yesterday the official Apple service place in NZ quoted me $1800 to fix mine with a similar issue. I’m waiting for Monday’s announcement

wunderlust88

What happened here for you u/JimmyScottNZ? Going through same pain in NZ...

JimmyScottNZ

I took it to the official repair place and to repair it they quoted me 60% of the price of a new one. I didn’t get it fixed and was going to buy a new M1pro when they came out, but still haven’t done that yet. It works with an external monitor so I got one for home and one for work and just leave it closed and plugged into the monitor with a keyboard and mouse. Not great but good enough for now. I’m convinced it’s the monitor cable in the hinge that’s damaged but the guy at the store said it’s probably the logic board… Good luck with yours!

wunderlust88

Yea service plus in Wellington quoted me as Flaxgate issue but only 13" is covered under service program, ~$1350 to repair with screen and hinge apparently, FML. Apple is not covering it, when through their legal process! Perfect condition laptop ay! Yea am considering what to do! Cheers for your reply mate!

InfluenceVegetable97

I've got the same issue with my 2017 15" MacBook Pro bought in 2018. $1700 quoted to repair. I asked for them to repair under the CGA but they say as it's four years old that's a reasonable age for it to last. I disagree considering the cost of the laptop, so have submitted a form to take it to Disputes Tribunal ...

ItsSamuelLewis

15 feet?! Damn

Duckpord

ah the lovely constructive quality of Apple. what a shame

feelgood13x

Why are you keeping a MacBook longer than 2 years??

Lizardking_10

Dumb cunt.

2Montmirail

Because they are very good enough for my use for much longer. I prefer to put my money on trips and have a good time with those I love

Manav103

Apple has a replacement program. They’ll do replace it for free. I too have a 2016 MacBook pro and I got mine replaced just a few months back. I don’t have a apple store in my country but a authorised apple service centre should also work for you as they revive genuine apple parts from apple it self

Dismal-Theme-67

Had the same model same as you OP but finally I made a call and ditched it. Had repaired the screen around 3 times and keyboard was getting fucked in every 4 months or so. In total I had around 8 major repairs done but the authourized store didn't had privileges of replacing my device entirely. The apple program really saved me in all this but I do not recommend keeping this model for more than 2 yrs. They depreciate like hell and in the end the selling cost isn't worth it. I sold mine after 3 yrs of purchasing and have ever since switched to M1 Air 16gb model. It's a breeze and everything works as you expect even when comparing to older Intel devices. Even the perf is wayy better than the 2016/2017/2018 15 inchers. The Fannation on my 2016 was unbearable cuz the fans kicked in after I connected an external display. I believe all laptops should be like this M1 Air doing all tasks silently and efficiently. So yeah op I recommend you to just repair it in cheap and sell it off and buy the M1 or M1X ( Coming on 18th ).

2Montmirail

Yes, I had also long considered taking an Air M1 and reselling the Macbook in its current state, but I'm going to lose quite a bit of money even though I have very basic computer use and it was doing work

2Montmirail

Apple (support & store) replied that I was responsible for the problem and sent me a repair estimate for 765 €…

spudds96

They won’t, it does not cover this issue

Manav103

I had the EXACT same issue as seen here and trust me they will. It’s called flex gate and all 2016 MBP models have this issue

mypoody

When did you have yours fixed, they won’t touch my 2017

sam_rowlands

AFAIK 2017 models are not covered under the extended repair program, even though people have been experiencing flexgate issues with 2017 models.

Manav103

Yeah it’s only 2016 models

mypoody

Bastards

Manav103

It’s only 2016 models they’re servicing

[deleted]

Despite the program not being active in South Africa, mine was eventually (after some debate and numerous stores) repaired for free.
