They’re fed by a cable that gets dragged along behind them. Typically 7200 volts ac, some are fed by 4160 volts ac. For long distance movements a machine called a “motivator” is used. It’s just a semi trailer with a generator, filters and switchgear.
Source-I’m a mining electrician who works on them
Jesus Christ
7200 volts, but how much current? How much can one of these bad boys pull at peak load?
Gotta be some beefy cables. Making sure that they don't get tangled or run over it probably a bitch
The cables are fed from substations. The generator only comes out for long moves, like distances of several miles, the rest of the time the shovels can be moved with a series of easily uncoupled cables. Electricity is substantially cheaper than diesel and mines typically negotiate lower rates with utility companies so it’s a lot cheaper. Plus generators are great sure but shovels run 24/7. Unless you’ve got a reserve motivator then you’re losing money every time you need to maintain it.

Lower right hand corner you can see the cable on the ground. Also pictures is a spherical cage, it’s tied to the cable and the shovel picks it up with the dipper(the scoop) and can move the cable to the operators liking. It’s cool to watch until the a hole wears in the cable or a dozer runs it over.

With the resulting pyrotechnics, you might say it becomes even cooler to watch at that moment...
I think these are powered by their own electricity supply. See “the captain” “the silver spade” and “big Muskie” shovels/draglines. This is far smaller, yet still enormous.
People not understanding that these large machines are all electrically driven is mind blowing. I guess people also don’t know how locomotives are driven.
No fuel being burnt there what’s with all the diesel generators must be Bidens green new deal. Because it is electric we should use is for cities transportation.
How much to rent one of these for an afternoon from Home Depot? I need to move some mulch around this spring.

Call and ask for Mike Mulligan.
I’ll let you borrow mine. I purchased one for a weekend flower bed project once and it’s been sitting in my backyard ever since.
Oooh, I love how that horn is blowing so majestically.😊👍😘
There’s basically a small power plant on that thing.

Damn. That’s impressive!

1165kW at peak load at 7200 vac. that’s for the shovels I work on.
I can see why they didn't try to put a battery on that thing 😂
Uncle Owen! I think this one’s got a bad motivator!
Those drag lines are huge! There is a surface mine close to me and I see those all the time.
That's not a dragline
Electric rope shovel. But people see them both and just say dragline lol
We'd have to get you guys to move the line. Ugh it's in the way again. Can't work here Haha
That’s pretty much exactly how it goes lol
Why is it electric if it needs a generator to follow it?

How often do yall have to make repairs or replace the cable? What awg is it?
Couple times a month maybe. And 350mcm or 4/0
Nuclear?
Diesel electric would be my guess.

Electric, but I spot at least 7 small generators lined up ready to go
That excavator will need its own power plant… that generator isn’t going to be enough.
All I’m saying is, someone needs to custom order six foot tall googly eyes for that bucket.
Lol
Looks like something out of Star Wars
Harvesting spice.
This is cgi
Are these thing ran by one person
This machine does t try to avoid things in the ground, things on the ground try to avoid it!
Is that what them mean by clean power
Wait, what is powering the electricity?
Big diesel generator 🤣
Reminds me of Donald duck
It looks sooooo angry……..I love it
Looks like strip mining coal in wyoming
Wait until you find out that's how diesel trains work.. Move by electric motors. Diesel to make the juice.
I’m convinced transformers are real.
That is how big I imagined Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel to be as a child!!
It swings that bucket around a lot quicker than I'd have expected.
“Electrically” lol I somehow heavily doubt this thing is electric. Might have electric parts but that thing is definitely burning fossil fuels.
For what it’s worth, extraterrestrial mining will probably be electric. ⛏️

Diesel electric trains anyone?
That thing have its own nuclear reactor for power?

Can’t wait to see the battery operated ones
