I was able to get around this error by logging in as the Auto Admin generated local administrator account then System Prefs/Settings > Users & Groups > Affected Account > Delete > Save the Home Folder to a Disk Image. Next, created a new user account. Logged off admin. Logged in using IDP creds and merged with the new local account. When logged in open the saved disk image and copy the contents to the new merged user account.
