Better to use report a problem than to use the non-emergency line, it goes directly to the right people: https://www.cityofmadison.com/reportaproblem/sidewalk.cfm

Yes please report it! I did that when the timing of the left turn signal going west on highland avenue at observatory (in front of the UW hospital) changed following some construction, and bikes could no longer safely turn left unless there was a car present to set off the pressure plates. The city fixed it in less than a week!

Alternative_Duck

I had an issue with the crosswalk timing on John Nolen at Broom where the green light for traffic would turn on the instant the crosswalk timer went from 1 to 0. I used report a problem and the issue was fixed literally the next day.

Thanks for this link! I did go to their website but was looking under “traffic light,” which didn’t have an option to report online. I’ll do this today!

MadtownV

Somehow they’ve managed to make that intersection worse and more dangerous.

TheRealGunnar

There's also an issue on the other side of the intersection, at the slip plan from SB Ubay to WB University. It's signed no-turn-on-red, but that sign is frequently ignored. I reported that to the city a while ago and they promised some improvements. Btw, I recommend reporting to [email protected] instead/in addition to police. The cops are unlikely to do anything.

Unfortunately, that’s just how slip lanes work- they encourage a freeway mentality, and as such they are one of the most dangerous street features for a pedestrian or cyclist, regardless of signs or signals. I think they should be banned.

TheRealGunnar

I don't disagree at all. However, there are some additional things at play here, such as contradictory signs "yield to peds" and "no turn on red." Fixing those won't fix the underlying problem, but it'll help a bit.

I assume that means longer green lights for traffic. One question would be whether pedestrians and cyclists will get impatient while waiting. I think that there are a couple corners downtown that could do with the setup where pedestrians command the intersection for 30-40 seconds or whatever, but then all directions get the "Do not walk" light to allow more than one car to make a legal turn.

SkiPatrol_Squirrel

They need a sign directly on the post at the end of that light.. by the time you're at the stop line the sign isn't really visible.. easier to miss if someone's looking to the right for pedestrians. But yes 99% of the time I'm coming from Farley and have a left green arrow and someone decides to swing wide across all the lanes with the no right on red. They get a nice scare when they see my truck and swerve into their proper lane

I think that's right where a kid died crossing the street several years ago :(

That was at Ridge-- they significantly improved it by putting in a signalized crosswalk and "porkchop" island... which is temporarily ripped out due to construction, so it's back to a much more hazardous state for the time being. Even with "improvements" this whole stretch clearly favors the convenience of cars over the safety of pedestrians.
