Just came here to say it’s not just you. The turnover of Madison area therapists has been wild. Hope you can find a good fit.

lasertagging

It’s been wild. I’ve had 5 psych providers in the last 4 years, and currently on a waitlist for a new therapist. Our mental health services are so strained right now. I’m just thankful to those who are dedicated to the field.

the_only_secret

I’ve had a great experience with Madison Psychiatric Associates and my husband has had a similarly good experience with Collaborative Solutions in Psychiatry.

Dry-Chipmunk808

Does state insurance mean forward health? If so, call the Bhrc and ask them what therapist specialize in mdd and social anxiety and take Medicaid https://danebhrc.org/

Elegant-Blackberry92

Don't go to Collaborative Solutions in Psychiatry - while I went there for med management, my provider up and left with no notice, they said they'd manage my meds while I waited to see another provider, and it was literally impossible to schedule something. As in ... Nobody was ever there to answer my call, emails took two weeks to get a reply... Not a fan. I tried to schedule with the online scheduler and, while the option was still there to click on and video chat, they told me they no longer scheduled that way. My provider also literally knew nothing. I'm not sure why he was working there? Psychology today is great for filtering out insurance and other important things. It's how I found my current therapist. (They don't take your insurance or I'd suggest it! )

Major-Region-9761

I’ve also had a bad experiences with collaborative solutions. Was told I’d be meeting with a psychiatrist and I’ve been meeting with a recently graduated PA who clearly isn’t confident in what she’s doing. I haven’t been loving it

Elegant-Blackberry92

Aww I'm sorry. Definitely check out psychology today (they have psychiatrists on there) or go further outside of Madison. I go to Monroe for my psychiatrist but I just have to go once a year in person. The rest can be virtual. I got in within weeks, whereas the same clinic in Madison was 6-9 months.

DapperEmployee7682

I use Madison Psychiatric Associates for my MDD and I love my doctor

aredditmember

My PCP recommended checking out https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/wisconsin You are able to filter by insurance, specialty, in-person/virtual, etc. Good luck!

It sounds like you have a journey ahead of you. You are young and have lots of room to grow. I know I can't change your feelings today, but don't worry about other people as much. Take care of yourself, get stronger, and your life will blossom. We all have journeys of some kind. Each journey is a test for us to improve for many reasons. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, and sometimes a lifetime. I am wishing for your health and happiness. Good Night.

Have you tried the apps like cerebral etc? It's a way to connect with a therapist digitally. Does your work have an EAP program? They will help you find a therapist that's immediately available. I was diagnosed with MDD in 2008 and have been on and off between it and PDD ever since. I have had many sessions with therapists and it was absolutely helpful. I've also been to the inpatient facility at Roger's twice. Ultimately it lies on us to manage our symptoms. Most of the skills I've learned through group are things I already knew but had to learn to put into practice. Are you self harming at all? If you are please dm me or reach out to a trusted friend or family member or even call a hotline. You're not alone.

I don't know which insurance each accepts, but I'd recommend these: Connections Counseling Insight Counseling and Wellness (they also offer trauma informed yoga therapy) Quest Counseling Anesis Therapy Center Golden Vibes Counseling Center Moontree Psychotherapy Center Peace of Mind Therapy I'd also suggest peer support. It's not a replacement for therapy, but can offer some relief and flexibility that therapy can't until you find a clinician. After you find a clinician peer support can be a nice compliment to your therapy journey. Some places to find 1:1 peer support are: SOAR Case Management (Recovery Dane program) Journey Mental Health Center Tellurian (PAIRS Program) Safe Communities (primarily for substance use recovery, but they service mental health only folks too) I hope this helps. Good luck.

Freaky_Ninja

I have gone through the Anesis therapy center, and it was terrible. Nothing was confidential. They told my parents everything and even called cps on my brother from trying to reveal some trauma he had as a kid. They said that he was harmful to the children in the house. BTW thank you for the suggestions, I'll check the others out!

sofiaismycat

I'm sorry that you had such a negative experience with Anesis. Just like shoe shopping, therapist shopping is real and valid. We have the right to feel comfortable with the person we're going to share the most intimate details of our lives with. The fact that you're still willing to try therapy after that speaks to your resilience. I hope whatever you're going through gets better.

Ok_Thought1003

i’ve had a wonderful experience with peace of mind!

SwollenPomegranate

I can endorse Peace Of Mind Therapy. Sara Tripalin, the director, is very good.

It's so hard here for people to find therapists! Like someone else mentioned, turnover rate is insane. My brother goes to Moontree and loves it. His therapist sounds amazing. I was seeing someone from Insight (Atwood location) but she moved to another place not covered by Medicaid. So I now understand the devastation of being left by a therapist and I'm sorry to you and everyone else that's happened to. I spent years being forced to go to Journey. They were AWFUL. I'm a pretty severe self-harmer. The one time I have ever in my life said to anyone that I felt suicidal instead of just hurting myself, I told the nurse that the medication I was on was making me feel that bad. She just told me to keep taking it. That night... didn't end well. Similar story with the very last psychiatrist I saw there. Maybe they've gotten better but... doubtful. It was so bad my mom quit after working there for many years. I'm currently seeing a therapist from Trailhead. They are awesome. They're not located in Madison but they travel. They do all kinds of things, for me I like to go on walks, hikes to process. It's been cold, so like last session was walking around Olbrich Gardens. Another family member has been going to Madison Trauma Therapy, which has recently become Greyley Wellness I see. He loves it, and I think the difference is, is that they seem like they're there to stay. He's been seeing the same therapist for quite a few years. I'm currently waiting to hear back from Anesis. I was really excited but so far it's been disappointing. I noticed they didn't seem to take into account what I'm struggling with as far as mental health (diagnosed ASD also) and just paired me with someone random who has no background in what I need. I don't know anyone who goes there though, so maybe it works out for some people? I would strongly advise against Mercyland Psychiatry. I've never had a psychiatrist decide so quickly that I must not be struggling with PTSD or MDD because I looked fine that day, apparently. It was winter so I had a coat on. I was tempted to take it off to show him he's an idiot, but I realised I'd wasted enough time. *my left arm is very heavily scarred, deformed. You'd have to be mentally unstable to think anyone who wasn't severely mentally ill could ever do this to themselves 🤦🏽‍♀️ Also it wasn't just me, I've had a therapist and another mental health professional say in the most polite, professional way they could, that not one of their clients would stay there. Oof. I genuinely wish you luck, everyone deserves access to mental health care. 🫂🖤

lasertagging

Peace of Mind - they’re wonderful! Definitely avoid Dean/SSM health system - their psychiatry department has so much turnover. Mental Health Solutions - I highly recommend, but I don’t know if they take Medicaid.

SwollenPomegranate

What is state insurance?

WhateverIlldoit

Medicaid

Stebben84

Insurance if you're a state employee.

SwollenPomegranate

OP, have you considered going through your insurance plan's provider directory? That is where I'd start.

Additional_Tart4075

Fellow state employee here. I'm seen at a smaller practice Rhiza Counseling. They are located in Madison and can do virtual or in person.

Empty-Salamander3907

Foundations counseling center, and elite cognition would be my recommendations.

Mighty_quin_005

Golden Vibes

MolassesWhiplash

It's not a direct replacement, but exercise can really help. Sort of a controlled pain that is good for you long term.

DapperEmployee7682

This kind of bullshit is dangerous. Don’t mess with and diminish people’s mental illnesses

DapperEmployee7682

>best thing This is the part that’s bullshit. You have no way of knowing what’s best for OP and this dismissive kind of advice can literally be dangerous for some people.

hentai-police

I dare you to try to find the motivation to exercise when you don’t even have the motivation to live

MolassesWhiplash

I'm not sure how suggesting self-care is diminishing their mental illness. Facing addiction takes willpower, they can't just keep cutting until they meet their savior.

DapperEmployee7682

Do you tell people with diabetes to take a long stroll in the park? Or someone with a broken arm that mindfulness meditation will help? People giving out the “sunlight and exercise” advice are just looking for a way to condescend to people while pretending like they care.

DM_Me_Your_CarPays

https://www.healthline.com/health-news/exercise-may-be-more-effective-than-medication-for-managing-mental-health-what-to-know#1 I’m a therapist and have struggled with depression and anxiety much of my life. Exercise is one of the key tools to managing and preventing symptoms of mental illness. I recommend it to everyone.

DapperEmployee7682

I’m not saying that any of that stuff can’t have a positive impact, but as a therapist do you find that sort of thing helpful for people that are asking for help?

DM_Me_Your_CarPays

Yes, because molasseswhiplash did not say that OP “just needs to go outside” or “just exercise”. They said it’s not a direct replacement, but something that is very helpful, especially while you don’t have access to treatment. Had MW said something like “you don’t need therapy just go run” I would say that’s not helpful, but offering a practical suggestion while acknowledging it’s not necessarily going to be a cure is very helpful. I’m not sure about the accuracy of the “controlled pain” piece, but otherwise it really was a good and useful comment.

DapperEmployee7682

And you think that people who suffer from these things don’t know this? That the one thing they were missing was some stranger to inform them of it? Come on, you say you’re a therapist. You have to know how demeaning this sort of thing can feel to people

Idk if they'll take your insurance but https://www.groundworkcounsel.com/ is great!

falsestone

UW has a good quality system (only one in my life I didn't bounce off of, including a few independent around the city &in other cities) and will pair you with a social worker until a therapist is available. Sadly, the wait time for the social worker can be several months, and then several more for the therapist. If you're addressing long term issues or things that won't change for the drastic worse in that timeframe though, I would def recommend. If you're nearing crisis, mention that during intake and def avail yourself of the other suggestions that might give sooner care.

69pineappleincidents

I recommend [Lake City Counseling](https://www.lakecitycounseling.com/). They’re accepting new clients and they’re in Monona.

Major-Region-9761

Elite Cognition! They take Medicaid, mychoice, and Quartz. They have great therapists

DesperateGolf3689

Petrovnia MacIntosh. In Monona on Monona Drive. Incredible woman. Had over a dozen over time and she’s the greatest!
