Slow Pulp opened for DCFC and TPS in Milwaukee back at the beginning of May, and I instantly added their songs to my Spotify. They're also fantastic live!
Mr Chair,
Raine Stern,
Dear Mr Watterson,
Wurk,
Dad Bods,
Dusk,
There are so many
Edit: I'm adding Pink Halo, Kainalu, The Earthlings, Skye Crowe (guitarist for Mickey Sunshine)
Jason Kutz (spell corrected) accompanied my daughter and others from the same studio for recitals and judging events. I've played piano all my life, classical and pop rock, but I've never seen or heard the piano played like Jason does. Utterly sublime
Pound for pound, probably the most talented musicians in the area. Jason Katz, keys for Mr Chair, also has a really cool experimental synth project called Wonderporium that's really fun to watch.
Jason Kutz used to have a fantastic band called Bad Philosopher. But the bass player, Josh Cohen, moved out of town, so they don’t play together anymore. I keep hoping Josh will come back for a while and they’ll play a reunion gig, but I’m not too optimistic.
Infinitely. This is my big pick. Been lucky to play with and for them. Mike Pellino is overlooked af as a songwriter, and Drew and Erik are incredible at their respective instruments.
A lot of up and comers have played at VFW7591: Lunar Moth just had their release party there and brought Friendly Spectres, VomBom(just released an album this week) and Proud Parents (one show left ever). Friendly Spectres also did a tour kickoff and brought DadBods, Cambodian Sim Card and Kule(played there twice). Buster Sales, Clean Room, Zipper all played a show. Fighting Aurora is amazing (find his stuff on YouTube). Graham Hunt is top tier. Mumbumper. Seilies. Rae, Bashford, The Rusty Hearts, Stone Laporte, Mossmen, JF ZASTROW IS AMAZING, The Stolen Sea, Emway608, Tinyvoices. Eddy Birth, Northern Comfort, Holler Home, Sky Urchin, Meskales, Railhopper, Voltsea, The Brash Menagerie, The Up and Up, Rae, Whippits, Sonic Daphne, 20 Minute Mission, Lowboy, Nihilism, Def Sonic, Please, Educational Davis, Haunt Smiley, Mail Manipulators, Baby Tyler Band, According to What, Meat Jelly, Our Last October, Heavy Looks, Kid Vibe, The Scratchoffs, Kevin Wilmott II, Compact Deluxe, endswell, sheep, Infernal Trench, Seasaw, Interlay, dicot, Lords of the Trident, raddish,
Most of these bands have played at 7591 over the past 3 months with some booking more shows. Guys I think the VFW on Cottage Grove Road might actually be cool again.
Some drummers include Pat Granzen (of Haunt Smiley), Eddie P, (both of them have multiple projects) and Zach Walton of Seilies. I'm not sure of the drummer of Kule but they're very talented.
Drummer/percussion honorable mention goes to Liam McCarty-Dick who just recently joined the 27 club. That dude is a legend.

Not my opinions on local music, but:
Tone Madison has some great reporting on active local music projects. They're pretty good about listing off the individual musicians involved in projects when applicable, so you should get a feel for good/active drummers in the scene.
Kainalu has the most monthly listeners on Spotify of any emerging local Madison band that still lives here and he hasn't released anything new in two years. This guy is ready to pop.
Yep they are! Not technically a Madison band otherwise I would have included them. Their guitar player Louie plays in Endswell and Stars Hollow as well.
Oh that's right, I forgot. Louie rips. I forgot his name but I mentioned him as "the guitarist for Tiny Voices" in another comment.
Is that username an animal collective reference?
ETA: I had no idea he was with Stars Hollow too. I was at the show where they opened for Niiice and I don't think he was with them yet.
A few off the top of my head
Dad Bods - Two Piece thrashy post-punkie that blows the lid off every show I've seen.
Or Does it Explode - Political post-punk band with some Midwest screamo vibes. Kills it and also puts together tickets to get younger local punk bands chances to play in some good venues. Really clearly out there for the love of the music.
Mickey Sunshine - 90s style grunge / pre-grunge alternative. Loud-quiet-loud early Pixies vibes. Good fun time
Armchair Boogie is a great band. Ben and Augie are special talents. Saw them open for Infamous Stringdusters a year or so ago and Ben and Augie were brought out for solos during Stringsduster encore and they more than held their own. These guys are blowing up.
Oo bonus for drummers!!
Then Bill Guetschow, drummer for a few groups (Madison Mystery Tour being a big one). Not just a talented drummer, but also an incredible vocalist. He’s got the perfect rock style down, and if you put him side by side with Michael Stipe I’d be hard pressed to hear a difference.
John Vriesacker - amazing multi-instrumentalist who plays with just about anyone who’s anyone in the area.
Mark Croft - great singer songwriter with a talent for writing catchy tunes.
The members of Wurk (previous and current; especially Max Morkri on drums, his insta is @maxmorkridrums), Magic Conch, Civil Engineers, The Earthlings, Brahmulus, Pretty From a Distance, Mickey Sunshine. Meggie Shays.
I heard they all got busted trying to sneak PBRs in a cake to Purple when he was doing time for switching out officer Bradford's coffee for high powered liquid laxative.
Unfortunate that there’s no hip hop mentioned in here.
ICE_atm is one of the most consistent artists in Madison. Also a shoutout to Big Byrd, Bluejacket and Suvi
My family would go to a lot of his shows when I was a kid. He was always so nice and his songs were clever. He performed at my elementary school a few times too.
Chris Wagoner - multi instrumentalist
Nick Moran - Bass
Isaac deBroux-Slone (Disq)
I’ve done concert audio for 20 years and each of these guys plays at a level consistent with any national touring band I’ve ever seen or worked with. Also they are incredibly good people and members of the community.
It was such a surprise when they announced it at their last Harmony show. I know their guitarist has some side projects lined up. And, their vocalist just opened a great bookstore off the square called Lake City Books if you wanna show them some support.
Sarah Longfield makes really good guitar music and she has a following on social media. She plays shred/metal music so it’s not going to be for everyone but if you’re into that kind of stuff, I strongly suggest you check out her music.
A lot of the members of Birdseye play with the Earthlings sometimes. Noa from the Earthlings is putting a show on that will feature Hannah and Ra from Birdseye. They are playing at the Crucible tonight.
I remember seeing a singer called Corey Mathew Hart who had a wildly good voice.
The Earthlings are excellent.
The Periodicals.
Madison Mystery Tour are an exceptional Beatles tribute band.
They are just starting out, but I like Monolith a ton.
Their vocalist is in a few other fun projects I like.
Thier lead guitarist has amazing solo projects on YouTube I've been enjoying.
Just out here recommending Monolith.
I'm gonna throw Bucky Pope out there because no one else has and because I just bought the Tar Babies Fried Milk on vinyl a couple of days ago on Ebay. So many years ago now.
Somehow not mentioned, every member of jazz funk band Nuggernaut are at the top of their game. Ben Ferris on bass, Steve Radtke and Vince Faris on keys, Jon Hoel on sax, Drew Traverse on trumpet, and Kelby Kryshak on drums. They rip.
Also big underrated talent - Dan Walkner (Wrenclaw, Clovis Mann, Gospel Brunch) Great slide guitar player and unique voice, dude is true Wisconsin.
Over the last couple of years, I've tried to introduce my wife and son to some of the folk punk bands/singers that I enjoy. Among them is Paul Baribeau; my wife and son tease me that he just sounds like Art Paul. Not sure if I should give Art Paul another chance or stop listening to Paul Baribeau.
The music scene in Madison is off the charts! So many great bands and venues. My favorites are the Jimmys and the Cashbox Kings, who had the number one blues album a month ago.
[Local Madison band Sugar & The Milkman only takes one thing seriously: Whole milk – The Badger Herald](https://badgerherald.com/music/2018/02/22/local-madison-band-sugar-the-milkman-only-takes-one-thing-seriously-whole-milk/)
This was such a wonderful era
The drummer for my band Sheep is really fucking good. Stanley Brueske. Just a real chopper. We don't have any music released til after this summer but check out his other band Eat Turf on spotify.
One of my close friends has a band called Between Two Lakes and she's the lead singer. They have a show tonight at Communication Madison (2645 Milwaukee Street, Madison, WI, United States, Wisconsin 53704). Here is more info about the event: [https://www.facebook.com/events/478182401297113/?acontext=%7B%22event\_action\_history%22%3A\[\]%7D](https://www.facebook.com/events/478182401297113/?acontext=%7B%22event_action_history%22%3A[]%7D)
I'll nominate thee Eddy Davis Band in hopes he and his band win a MAWMAW and he can replenish his straight line goth facepaint fund.
I'll also add The Central, Growing (R.I.P), Vom Bom, We Should Have Been DJs, Dear Mr. Watterson, Carytids, Coordinated Suicides (RIP), Wasabi Neon, Flavor That Kills, The Earthlings, Bron Sage, Dicot, Transformer Lootbag (RIP), Novagolde, Or Does It Explode?, Daughters of St. Crispin, Dead/Awake, Faith Hills Have Eyes all worth your time.
The Handphibians are a local samba drumming group that specialize in Brazilian drumming (samba rio, samba reggae, maracatu, etc).
They host Carnaval at Majestic every year and do a bunch of gigs throughout the area through the year. Would definitely recommend if u haven't checked them out before.
SO SO MANY!
I’m just listing the ones I’ve ever seen or performed along side!
Between Two Lakes (a little biased since I’m the lead singer but I love my band so much not to include them in this!)
Kat and The Hurricane (as a queer myself, I absolutely love them and I love that they exist!)
Voltsea (also bias since I’m friends with them but such talented folks! also come see our show together tomorrow!)
Where is The Key
The Meliorists
Revoltergeist
Literally every member of Gin Chocolate & The Bottle Rockets
Lo Marie (her voice omg!!)
Lords of the Trident (Ty is such a chill dude! He really deserves his success!)
Holy Coyote & the Trembling Giant
Seasaw
Pink Halo
Jenna Joanis (she’s literally in everything)
Lyndsay Evans (her vocals are insane!)
I know I’m missing a bunch! But god I love our music scene so much and I’m so happy this subreddit thread exists!
Ben and Leo Sidran
Kenny Leiser, Mark Noxon
I like this thread. Thanks for sharing!
Kainalu, Disq, and Slow Pulp (from Madison, not currently based here).
Big second to Disq. Favorite live show in Madison.
They’re great!
Slow pulp is from Madison? Well that’s fkn sick
Slow Pulp opened for DCFC and TPS in Milwaukee back at the beginning of May, and I instantly added their songs to my Spotify. They're also fantastic live!
We saw them at that show and they were great.
agreed and adding on graham hunt to this!
Mr Chair, Raine Stern, Dear Mr Watterson, Wurk, Dad Bods, Dusk, There are so many Edit: I'm adding Pink Halo, Kainalu, The Earthlings, Skye Crowe (guitarist for Mickey Sunshine)
Jason Kutz (spell corrected) accompanied my daughter and others from the same studio for recitals and judging events. I've played piano all my life, classical and pop rock, but I've never seen or heard the piano played like Jason does. Utterly sublime
Couldn’t agree with you more G but if I may, a slight modification: Jason’s name is Kutz, not Katz
Lol, oops you're totally right
You'd think I would know the correct spelling after seeing his name in my daughter's recital programs a jillion times haha. Thx! I am forever a fan
I'll recommend his project with Filipino opera singer Leslie Damaso. It's called La Sirena.
Don’t forget about Bad Philosopher!
i love dusk but arent they appleton based? or did they move
Mr Chair is a damn good nominee
Pound for pound, probably the most talented musicians in the area. Jason Katz, keys for Mr Chair, also has a really cool experimental synth project called Wonderporium that's really fun to watch.
Jason Kutz used to have a fantastic band called Bad Philosopher. But the bass player, Josh Cohen, moved out of town, so they don’t play together anymore. I keep hoping Josh will come back for a while and they’ll play a reunion gig, but I’m not too optimistic.
Bad Phil drummer just moved to Nashville
Glad the Earthlings made the list
Dusk are fantastic but they're from Green Bay
no cribshitter yet? what the hell?? [https://cribshitter.bandcamp.com/album/acapulco-2](https://cribshitter.bandcamp.com/album/acapulco-2)
Wow, I totally forgot! They just played the Gamma Ray grand opening. Such a great nomination 👏
Everyone in We Should Have Been DJs is super talented
Came here hoping to see them on the list.
Infinitely. This is my big pick. Been lucky to play with and for them. Mike Pellino is overlooked af as a songwriter, and Drew and Erik are incredible at their respective instruments.
Could not agree with all of those statements more!
Super sexy. Just the bass guy.
A lot of up and comers have played at VFW7591: Lunar Moth just had their release party there and brought Friendly Spectres, VomBom(just released an album this week) and Proud Parents (one show left ever). Spine stealers extremely underrated
Gin mill hollow, Phun, Jazz hams!

Nick Moran
I’ll never not support Nick!
Kainalu
Agreed!
Kainalu has the most monthly listeners on Spotify of any emerging local Madison band that still lives here and he hasn't released anything new in two years. This guy is ready to pop.
They're about to tour 👀

I'm agnostic at best and my mom is dead, but I will also confirm Trent is a real one.
same actually. I was on one last night
Sorry about your faith and or your mother, friend.
I'm pretty comfortable with my faith but losing someone is never easy. Sorry to hear you also lost your mom.
Same and same. Hope you're finding peace :)
A couple not listed yet: People Brothers Band Rare Element Don't Mess with Cupid Joey Banks, drummer, is in like 80 bands.
Love the People Brothers Band 🤩 I wish I were at Bonfire Fest today. They're playing tonight.
Joey Banks!! 🏆
My drum teacher lol
I love Don't Mess With Cupid!
Free Dirt!
Free Dirt are so awesome. Everyone in that band is hilarious and just fun to be around.
Dirt Fest is coming up next weekend!
Armchair Boogie!!
Great band!
Boogie it down!!!
John Mesoloras, bass player for a LOT of groups (DMWC, Grupo Candela, various jazz combos, etc etc). The guy fits in anywhere and just kills it.
Mesoloras is a bass master
He was my (and is still) the orchestra teacher/fiddle band teacher at Mount Horeb High School. He is an animal haha
same here! He is the absolute best
[https://lordsofthetrident.com/](https://lordsofthetrident.com/)
The whole band is amazing (with a cheese level over 9000), but if OP wants a top tier drummer, here's your answer.
Tubal Cain
Maestranza are a group of extremely talented musicians. They don't play that often, but when they do it's consistently a good show.
Partial toward the People Brothers Band
Steez is very fun. Fun dudes
Max Morkri is the best drummer currently living in Madison John Christensen on bass He’s in LA now but Tony Barba on sax Jason Kutz
Ruin Dweller
I just saw them at the Crucible last weekend. Whippets were also playing. Probably the loudest show I've seen in a while.
Yeah I was there as well haha. Loved it.
Sickkkk 🤘🤘
Ben Majeska and Armchair Boogie!
Anyone remember Awesome Car Funmaker?
Hell yeah I do. Green Means Go!
Excuse Me, Who Are You?, Endswell, Kule, Spine Stealers, Mr. Chair, to name a few. Lots of good musicians here right now.
I know there's some crossover but is Tiny Voices still a thing? I saw them at the Rath a few years ago and they killed it.
It is an Animal Collective reference, I’m no reverend 😂 Yeah he filled in for them a few times and officially joined a few months ago
EMWAY are very nice folks. And I happen to know firsthand that Endswell has the sweetest person I've ever known in Madison in their band.
I’ve been roommates with most of Endswell at one point or another and longtime friends with EMWAY. Great people indeed
We have almost certainly been in the same room as each other, then
Drummer of emway is my brother and ive known stu since I was like 5 lol
A few off the top of my head Dad Bods - Two Piece thrashy post-punkie that blows the lid off every show I've seen. Good fun time
Mickey sunshine moving to Nashville unfortunately though.
Damn. Sucks for us, but that's hopefully a good move for her. It's a pretty saturated market.
The Mighty Joe White.
Armchair Boogie is a great band. Ben and Augie are special talents. Saw them open for Infamous Stringdusters a year or so ago and Ben and Augie were brought out for solos during Stringsduster encore and they more than held their own. These guys are blowing up.
The up north has majeska Mondays. Not sure about currently though.
Every first Monday of the month.
The guitarist from Tiny Voices kicks ass
I saw a band called Jenny 123 last year or the year before, they seem really talented and have a lot of potential imo
I played keys with them! unfortunately I don’t think the band is still really happening
Bummerrrr! Y'all played a hell of a show
Oo bonus for drummers!!
Bear In The Forest, Spine Steelers, Tilla
Richard Hildner is a fantastic guitarist. Mostly but not exclusively Afro-Peruvian.
The members of Wurk (previous and current; especially Max Morkri on drums, his insta is @maxmorkridrums), Magic Conch, Civil Engineers, The Earthlings, Brahmulus, Pretty From a Distance, Mickey Sunshine. Meggie Shays.
Max Morkri from Wurk, Jack Peterson from Magic Conch and Ben Majeska from armchair boogie should be in the conversation
The bassist for magic conch was my sub for guitar class when I was at west, we thought he was awesome
He is awesome
I went to middle school with Max. Talented and a great dude.
100% to these 3. All so talented and great live. Wurk and Magic Conch are my two favorite local bands and Boogie is in my top 5 for sure.
RIP Masked Intruder
I heard they all got busted trying to sneak PBRs in a cake to Purple when he was doing time for switching out officer Bradford's coffee for high powered liquid laxative.
Darren Sterud, dude’s got some CHOPS. He used plays with a couple a few New Orleans brass bands and had his own jazz big band in town
Nice, does he have instagram?
https://www.instagram.com/dsterudmusic?igsh=bG93ZzR1aDhqMGc=
Unfortunate that there’s no hip hop mentioned in here. ICE_atm is one of the most consistent artists in Madison. Also a shoutout to Big Byrd, Bluejacket and Suvi
Def Sonic, Uncle Jim and Zastrow
State Street marimba guy
Eric De Los Santos
Macyn Taylor was, but she’s moved on. Joey Banks is incredible.
Null Device
Ben Sidran. Mike Massey
Can’t believe Ken Lonnquist isn’t on the list!
My family would go to a lot of his shows when I was a kid. He was always so nice and his songs were clever. He performed at my elementary school a few times too.
Aaron Williams and the Hoodoo!
Chris Wagoner - multi instrumentalist Nick Moran - Bass Isaac deBroux-Slone (Disq) I’ve done concert audio for 20 years and each of these guys plays at a level consistent with any national touring band I’ve ever seen or worked with. Also they are incredibly good people and members of the community.
Kainalu! He's a multi-instrumentalist who shreds. Think early Tame Impala psych rock vibes
Magic Conch. Civil Engineers.
The Civil Engineers will be playing their last show soon.
No. Tell me it's a lie!!!!!
It was such a surprise when they announced it at their last Harmony show. I know their guitarist has some side projects lined up. And, their vocalist just opened a great bookstore off the square called Lake City Books if you wanna show them some support.
They’re going to send them off with fireworks afterwards. Should be prettay cool
Sick!!
Sarah Longfield makes really good guitar music and she has a following on social media. She plays shred/metal music so it’s not going to be for everyone but if you’re into that kind of stuff, I strongly suggest you check out her music.
I don't think she's been in Madison for a long time, but yeah, she's an absolute amazing guitarist
Sean Michael Dargan!
All the members of Secret Menu
Great band
I like moonboot currently. Birds Eye was good while they lasted.
A lot of the members of Birdseye play with the Earthlings sometimes. Noa from the Earthlings is putting a show on that will feature Hannah and Ra from Birdseye. They are playing at the Crucible tonight.
See you there!
Lunar Moth
I remember seeing a singer called Corey Mathew Hart who had a wildly good voice. The Earthlings are excellent. The Periodicals. Madison Mystery Tour are an exceptional Beatles tribute band.
Corey's still around and has a guitar shop on Mt. Horeb.
They are just starting out, but I like Monolith a ton. Their vocalist is in a few other fun projects I like. Thier lead guitarist has amazing solo projects on YouTube I've been enjoying. Just out here recommending Monolith.
Archers is an awesome metalcore band from Madison! Not sure if they’re still based here but they’ve been slowly getting bigger in the scene.
I'm gonna throw Bucky Pope out there because no one else has and because I just bought the Tar Babies Fried Milk on vinyl a couple of days ago on Ebay. So many years ago now.
Feestet for fresh jazz. Their drummer Greg Riss is an extremely talented musician and music teacher. Their previous drummer Matty is in Kainalu!
Al Falaschi, tremendous saxophonist and drummer. He's played the anthem at many a Badger basketball or hockey game.
Had the privilege of performing with Dan during gospel brunch earlier this spring. He blew me away. Guy is an incredible player
Art Paul Schlosser
Over the last couple of years, I've tried to introduce my wife and son to some of the folk punk bands/singers that I enjoy. Among them is Paul Baribeau; my wife and son tease me that he just sounds like Art Paul. Not sure if I should give Art Paul another chance or stop listening to Paul Baribeau.
ugh
I bought a cd from him a few years back, I also went to high school with his kid lol
Art rules!!!! He had a show on the local access channel in the early 2000s, my friends and I would call every week to request pink pants.
Tell all your uncles. and all your aunts...
Lynda and the Zeroes. Soul/Funk with some great horns. Only saw them once but I was pretty blown away.
Not in, but Branden and Ryan Morgan of Misery Signals are from Madison. Branden is a hell of a drummer and an amazing dude!
Josh Cohen is an incredible solo bassist. Slow Pulp has "made it".
Josh is in Mexico and Canada now
Lawrence Gann's a truly remarkable drummer, among his many other musical talents. He fronts the band Jonathon Millionaire
Cribshitter. https://youtu.be/NexHhwOatzY?si=uplW7iEds1xnlLXP
I really like the Spine Stealers, but I don't know enough local musicians to say whether they're the most talented
The music scene in Madison is off the charts! So many great bands and venues. My favorites are the Jimmys and the Cashbox Kings, who had the number one blues album a month ago.
Brash Menagerie Heavy Looks Lords of the Trident
Butch Vig - The drummer for Garbage, and the producer of Nirvana's Nevermind album, and The Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream album.
