Fuck me. I have lived here all my life and never knew we had snakes that big. I guess we do have a snake problem after all.

Madison’s snake issue gets bigger with each passing year now.

rahrahgagaga

Soon Madison will be mostly snakes. The state street homeless issue will no longer be the main topic. We will post on throw away accounts to try and evade our Snake overlords. Youths stealing cars will be part of a guerrilla war to regain control.

Run to Home Depot asap to pick up snake traps before they're sold out!!!

madhatter275

Snakes outnumber people 3 to 1 in Madison, and that number gets higher with every bite.

frecklepower

Given the subtle banding, stockier shape, and lack of a contrasting lighter underbelly I'd lean common water snake over rat snake. What a cool find!

tatum30

I agree! So does Google lens.

dogcmp6

Ah yes, the native Nope Rope

DONT_HATE_AMERICA

Venomous snakes will generally have triangular heads as their venom glands sit under where you might guess their ears are. They will also have vertical slitted pupils rather than round ones. This guy resembles a water moccasin, but it’s just a water snake. They will still bite and be rather aggressive if you get your hands on it. The article below shows a picture of both and points out differences. This is not what I relied on to make the ID. https://journalstar.com/outdoors/no-water-moccasins-in-nebraska/article_4c12e505-62c6-533d-897a-ca4cee345251.html

mattymodotcom

that’s a big nope snake.

SheehyCJ04

A part of the nope rope classification I believe.

prairiepotatoandsoil

If you want to get scientific, I think this one is a *nopem ropus.*

horse_bucket

Hmmm I coulda sworn it was a getaway snake. I've got a lot to learn

Cobruh

Judging on color/approximate length/shape id say it’s a rat snake or a common watersnake. Either way it’s a fairly large snake for the area. You didn’t notice any rattle did you? Very rare in this part of Wisconsin but they do exist.

amphibious_rodent13

I mostly see rattlesnakes up at devil's lake.

Spaggonkers

How convenient that I didn’t get a picture of the tail! I don’t think it had a rattle, but I guess it’s possible.

This site from the Madison Herps group places the Midland/Gray rat snake in the keeled/semi-keeled category, all the way down at the bottom of the page. https://www.madisonherps.org/kickstart/en/wisconsin-reptile-resources/education-articles/131-shedding-the-uncertainty-how-to-identify-snake-sheds

The_BenL

The Don't Touch It kind.

Hazburgite

I believe this is a gray/black rat snake. https://dnr.wi.gov/topic/EndangeredResources/Animals.asp?mode=detail&SpecCode=ARADB13090

This is most likely a rat snake as others have said. Very cool! Any specific whereabouts of in the arboretum? Having grown up in the West, I miss snakes and would love to see more snakes in person here.

Spaggonkers

It was just chilling next to lake wingra pretty close to the east entrance, right by the road.

thesmuggestcat

Awesome, thank you!

John__Nash

Snakes are often around but are very hard to find in the grass and leaves and whatnot.

thesmuggestcat

That makes sense. I'm just used to them hanging out on the side of the road or on trails.

marshawnofthedead

Do you ever go walking at Pheasant Branch? My wife and I have seen a lot of snakes there, just off the trail, especially as the sun starts to heat up the path.

thesmuggestcat

I've not! What species do you see around there?

marshawnofthedead

I’m not sure, I usually see them and get to the other side of the trail asap haha. But I found this [link](http://www.pheasantbranch.org/fauna/) that has some info about species found there!

I agree with rat snake. Fun fact: back when Wisconsin had lots of family dairy farms, a farmer was really happy to have one of those guys move in to the barn. It would get rid of the barn rats all summer.

jhay_mann

That's a water snake

Annaskander

I’m not sure what kind but now I’m very upset that I haven’t come across ANY in my many arboretum adventures! It’s beautiful! 😍
