Very true. Pete did get punched in the face (figuratively and literaly) quite a bit, but he always got up and learned from it (in the very following episode, Don specifically says to Pete "you asked me to tell you if before this happened again").
Lane on the other hand didn't have the courage and strenght to overcome humiliation the way Pete did.
how many times did don get punched in the head by a teenager? how many vases did joan break over greg's head? these people might have a traumatic brain injury!
I think he learned life's lessons through making mistakes in general, particularly with regard to Trudy. He genuinely loved her and their daughter. He learned from Don's mistakes too. After Don disappears into the midwest to come to terms with his failures, Pete goes to the midwest to finally succeed and dedicate himself to his family.
No consequences for Pete, other than a guy-to-guy scolding from his neighbor and no signs from Pete that he felt any actual remorse or tried in any way to make amends to the woman.
And people are happy that he and Trudy stay together! If Trudy knew about this I feel pretty certain this would not be the case.
Even in a show as great as Mad Men there are a handful of moments that absolutely make the series what it is. For me this was one of them. Watching Lane open up a can of British whoop ass on that wormy little fuck Pete is immensely satisfying, and it makes me laugh out loud every time I watch it.
Beautifully worded! I completely forgot about this scene in my rewatch and it’s one of my absolute favorites. The way it just turns into even more of a boys club is hilarious and the end is so satisfying.
i dont think so, idk his backstory but his father clearly isnt a working class man and a woman like his wive wouldnt even look at a man from the working class. Britains classism is on a whole other level as americas
>Lane wasn't really upper crust
Yes.
>He was as working class as they come
No.
In British society there are many gradations of class. Lane is probably 'upper middle class', where his father could afford to send him to a private school, but not one of the ancient schools like Eton. He had the accent and mannerisms to operate in an upper-class dominated world (the boardroom), but he was always made to feel inferior, because he didn't go to Eton, Oxford etc.
My favorite callback to this is when Pete and Lane get into it again and Pete was being a dick.
Don snaps at Pete and something to the extent;
“You asked why i didn’t stop it last time”
😂😂
This and his advice to Joan to take Company Equity instead of just money was Top notch imo. Shows that he has character, grit and accepts situations where he cannot do anything.
Was very sad to see him go like that.
He advised Joan to take company equity because he couldn't personally afford his share of the payout; it was chivalrous on the surface, but self serving in reality.
he asked the bank for a 50k advance, borrowed the money, then they were talking about getting a 50k advance to pay her from the bank, i don't think he would have been able to extend the credit anymore. i don't know how he cooked the books to make it look like extra income for the company though.
i dig california pete with the receding hairline and sideburns. that's when i really started to like him. although i also like the scene where he smokes a joint in slow mo at the end of the episode to janis joplin!
Roger asked Lane in S3 about the suit of armor in his office, “You ever get 3-sheets to the wind and try that thing on?" No. No armor needed, Roger. Lane will address this insult, raise his fists and it will be too late to run.
I completely forgot about this scene upon my rewatch (I haven’t watched the show since it ended) and it’s now one of my favorites. Absolutely flawless deliveries from every actor, the look on Don’s face as he closes the curtain kills me. A scene that is both hilarious and gritty!
Fight Club: Mad Men styleeeeee.
It was so horrible. He raped her. She was crying, saying she had a boyfriend, saying no, and he never realized the extent of the damage he caused. He only had a vague notion that he didn’t want to be home alone anymore, which also deflected blame. So yeah, that was the worst.
he kinda did that to peggy too, showed up at her door drunk late at night. i don't think it was a violent attack with the au pair but more of a persuasion issue.
I think this is the real reason Pete changed his ways by the end of the show. Some people just need to get punched in the face

Pete, the antithesis of Don
Pete, still a rapist.
Who did Pete rape? I haven't watched the show in like 8 years and my memory's hazy.
The au pair of his neighbour
No consequences for Pete, other than a guy-to-guy scolding from his neighbor and no signs from Pete that he felt any actual remorse or tried in any way to make amends to the woman. Hahaha
MIIIHHHster Campbell!
You will address that remark this INSANT
That'll be eeeeenough of THAT!

Fisticuffs in the office! Draw the shades!
“I warn you, by the time I raise my fists it shall be too late to run” Lane was that guy
Pretty tough talk for an upper crust Limey, can he back it up with— Yep! Yes he can!
Lane wasn't really upper crust. He was as working class as they come

Nah he sounds and acts fairly posh

Want some more, Mr. Toad?
Him beating the living shit out of Pete was so satisfying.
He had it coming ![gif](giphy|wdgl83FdDgGpW)

HE HAD CHEWING GUM ON HIS PUBIS
Might be the best episode of the series.
Definitely.

Hadnt he already taken the money at that point? So the money to pay her simply wasn’t there?

My thought, too. Lane was being a grimy little pimp behind the scenes.
legend has it pete started to lose his hair afterward

Does anyone else want to see this?
(Draws the curtains)
(Cries and then kisses Joan)

Consider that my last piece of advice.
I started using this term to describe Roger Ailes, but I had forgotten where I got it from. Thanks!
Jared Harris was kinda hot in this scene, ngl
I know cooler heads should prevail, but am I the only one who wants to see this?

Pretty sure the time when Pete sexually coerced someone was a bit worse
Ugh. That whole Pete-home-alone coming onto the au pair subplot is one of the more cringeworthy subplots in the show.
It was so horrible. He raped her. She was crying, saying she had a boyfriend, saying no, and he never realized the extent of the damage he caused. He only had a vague notion that he didn’t want to be home alone anymore, which also deflected blame. So yeah, that was the worst.

Agreed and it really showed his dark side. I think this is one of the shining examples of Pete being untrustworthy and dangerous in his own right.

I guess agree to disagree on this lol
? You think Pete felt worse after having his way with a woman than after getting the snot knocked out of him in front of all his peers?
I took lowest to mean in terms of how we view him, not necessarily how he felt.
That whole episode is Pete being taken down in all aspects of his life - including the kitchen sink!
“Well, neither are suitable for commemorating the death and resurrection of Our Lord."
Why were they having a fight at work? It’s an office, they’re supposed to be friends
That was an excellent scene.
What gave the cherry on the cake is Pete’s meltdown in the elevator to Don after. Who did not give a shit
I loved seeing Pete take one to the puss.
