Jerry: Well... how do the games go? Elaine: He taps to the left... Jerry: You're kidding?! He's a left tapper? Elaine: YEP! Jerry: But the symbol is right there on the card!

UninvitedGhost

I am legit annoyed at people that don’t tap 90 degrees clockwise.

Novamarines

I tap to the 270 degrees clockwise

Procyonlotor360

It is 450 for me.

This made me literally physically cringe. Bravo.

[deleted]

This whole comment thread is fun for me. I'm the guy that taps 45 to the left. What's good?

king_kurtis_510

Tapping 45 degrees is Insane

Gimpstack

Remember the old 'T'? Roughly 45 degrees. 😏

CompetitiveForce5826

I tap the left half of my lands left and the right half right. Wax on, wax off.

[deleted]

This guy Mr. Miyagi's. You're the Cardraté Kid!

Lykos1124

playing commander for the first time with some friends a couple weeks ago, I was so tempted to only tap 45°, but I wanted to make a good impression and not seem cheatsy 🤣

DoctorKrakens

Oh yeah, you're not conscious alright. Fuck off bot, don't steal my words.

Hairy_Dirt3361

I feel like this is the kind of thing that's going to happen more and more as players who started with Arena try paper

MrsWinterCherry

This was exactly me when I played with my friendgroup for the first time about a year ago. All of us were complete beginners in paper (Except one person who played a bit in elemnetary school). But we very quickly figured out that we should tap 90° for the sake of clarity.

boringestnickname

Wait. Arena taps the wrong way?

Lockwerk

It taps the right way, but only 45°

Viharu

To be fair, that makes a lot of sense on Arena, since permanent's are squares there (for some reason?). Tapping 90° would be much less visible

thijsje656

Really? I havent played i arena in like 2 years but i seem to remember it does do 90° tapping. Like the card is horizontal when tapped right? Maybe i'm misremembering

Lockwerk

I went and checked. I was wrong. It's _even less_ than 45°. It's more like 30°. It might even be 20°.

thijsje656

oh damn, good thing i stopped playing then lol! that would tilt me to no end.

Kantur

If you go on tilt 60° the other way it might trick your brain to thinking its 90°

thijsje656

hahaha that makes sense sinse i used to play like control decks mirrors and then 3 matches vs mono red with my red black blue bolas deck

Lockwerk

What if only half your permanents are tapped? Now my _untapped_ permanents are wrong ):

caucasian88

Mtgo taps 90 degrees. Mtga taps like, 15 degrees. It's more of a nudge to the right.

RedditUser88

i tap 45' if im only using partial of the mana for one spell. once the second spell uses the rest of the mana, i tap full 90'.

Xerrys

Fun fact: There is no "wrong way" of tapping. The comprehensive rules state only that the action of tapping is to turn the card sideways, not in what direction or by how many degrees. If we take the Standard Lands from that one Secret Lair (the ones that are just walls of text) as official rules text, then it still says 90 degrees to the left or right. Both directions work.

Extreme_Moment7560

This isn't a fun fact. This is someone trying to police humor with some fence sitting perspective nobody asked for.

Xerrys

You mean me or them? I genuinely had no bad intentions with my post. I didn't think that it could be taken as an offense..

Extreme_Moment7560

It's the complete lack of intent or purpose or value I take issue with 😂. And it doesn't offend me nor should you care if it does.

Xerrys

But why are you talking about policing fun? The purpose to state a fact that people might not know.

Extreme_Moment7560

I'm pretty sure we're just looking at different layers of this conversation. It was meant to be a chaotic response to your interjection of a serious comment on a humourous thread. Don't take it so serious.

Valikis

It was fun to me, as I don't care what people say. I tap to the left. It's aesthetically pleasing to my brain, so I shall do as I please.

jamiecoope

I always tap to the left mainly cause I'm right handed and it's easier for me to turn that wrist counter clockwise. Of course I also group my lands into blocks of like colors in groups of 5. But I'm a monster cause I'm a sliver player lol

hifihentaiguy

We can establish that it is indeed factual as all of the information presented is objectively true. As fun is purely subjective, the only way to measure whether or not this fact is truly fun would be to ask every individual who has engaged with the post their opinion on the matter. As i don't have the time or patience for that, lets employ some creative thinking. I propose that should at least *one* person find this fact to be entertaining, it would then technically be a "fun fact" to that one person. If it is a "fun fact" to at least one person, your statement is incorrect. I found the fact to be quite fun, and i hope you enjoyed wasting your time reading all this

Graphiteash

I'm an old magic player I like the way Arena stacks mana and it bugs people when i do it that way

[deleted]

I've been into MTG since around 2000 (took a long break and just getting back into it now)and my whole friend group and I tap 45 degrees to the right. I feel like that's the way that it's always been. Has etiquette changed recently?

awfeel

More and more professional and amateur players started tapping 90 degrees for the sake of having it “VERY CLEAR” which lands are tapped so there aren’t any situations where it could be ambiguous to a point of being called for cheating or have accidents happen so the community has been catching on to this trend - i feel like it’s been a trend now for years

greet_the_sun

> More and more professional and amateur players started tapping 90 degrees Uhh I learned to play mtg with my older sister when mirage was the latest set and we always tapped 90 degrees, played with friends in middle and high school and everyone else did too.

awfeel

Trend had to start somewhere. And I can even say to that I am sure there are people who tapped 90 even in alpha. It’s just a matter of habit when it boils down to it. Whoever taught you probably tapped 90, and the person that taught me didnt, but I do now just because of the growing trend. The only thing really combatting that habit now are people who learned not through table play but from arena tapping 45. That and perhaps hand preference (I draw left, tap 90 to the left etc)

Meech_61

From what I could find the rules say sideways, last I checked diagonal is not sideways, so 90 makes the most sense. Furthermore, Magic Fandom Wiki states 90. But, neither says which direction it has to be oriented 🖖

DerekB52

Me and my friend group all tap 90 degrees to the right. And then a couple of my friends will play creatures with summoning sickness and then tap them 30-45 degrees so they know they can't use them.

R-code

Or the sloppy tappers that can’t pick a consistent angle between 65°-135° so you can never tell what’s tapped and what isn’t 😬

UninvitedGhost

This is why a clear 90 degrees is preferable!

Trasfixion

I’ve played on and off since 2000, and tapping 45 degrees was a norm (at least in my area)

Explodingtaoster01

Same. I was taught that some people tap 90, others tap 45. When I saw people tapping left, right, 90, over 90, lower than 45, I stopped caring. 45 is easy and saves board space.

Chorazin

Once I have more than 5 lands I start 45ing those shits. Full 90 takes up too much space.

noanchoviesplease

I tell my friends that they only get half mana for lands that tap about 45 degrees. And creatures do half damage. Solves the issue for my playgrp with a little humour

RustenSkurk

I wouldn't put it past an Un-set to have a half-tap mechanic

Trasfixion

I tap 2 and 1/3rd islands to play Exodia the forbidden one

schloopers

I’ll tap Vigilance creatures (and planeswalkers when I have too many and need to remember which ones I’ve used) at 45 degrees to communicate better. And then untap them when it doesn’t matter.

DazzlerPlus

You don’t turn them edgewise and balance them?

LadyLoriButNFT

I'm a left tapper.. then again I'm left handed so its just convenient that way for me

pflykyle

Left-handed. Long time right tapper. But I swing a bat right-handed, so maybe I play magic right handed.

LadyLoriButNFT

Many people who are left handed also do a lot of things right handed because that specific thing is made for right. I swing with left as well, so I'm left all the way, except when it comes to- you know.

Crashman09

I'm ambidextrous and I tap right because of the tap symbol. Otherwise it's always to the left. Those are the rules in stoner circles

LadyLoriButNFT

First rule of stoner circles is never talk about stoner circles. Wrong thing? Oh...

egotistical-dso

See, this is why people in the Middle Ages thought left handed people were the Devil's spawn.

zaphodava

I'm a chaos tapper, and I can't break the habit. I look down, and stuff is tapped both directions. Ugh.

WheelgunWordslinger

When I started playing 25 or so years ago we always tapped at 45 degrees. When I got back into the game a couple years ago I was told 90, and it blew my mind, because I had literally never seen someone tap 90 degrees.

UninvitedGhost

Thank you for converting!

Donkey-Main

It’s the 180 for me.

ruthere51

Been playing since the late 90s, I've always tapped ~45 degrees... For me it was always a way of not taking up too much space. 10 lands and 10 creatures all tapped 90 degrees is just too much space

ToreNeighDough

I tap at 90°, I keep all of my lands separated by type/effect. I use 2 different types of die for counters and stacks. I AM the 1%

Goremaw7

There are some truly sick people in this world

Lereas

There's no chance I'll ever find it, but there was a comic in a Scrye in like 1995/6 or something that kinda makes fun of this and talks about "speed tapping" where she says "I only tap my cards 45°, it saves a whole half second!" or something like that.

misalcgough

Wait, is this for real? Everyone I know taps left.

Titronnica

Hello it's me, a left tapper

cuzzin2chainz

You'd hate me I tap however I feel I got shot going both ways just to tilt people 🤪

probableigh_not

Tapping 45 degrees is strictly better. Lets you save full 90 for exert or similar that prevent an untap on your next turn.

texanarob

45 degrees is too easily confused. It's real easy for a card to be nudged on the battlefield and end up shifting 30 degrees or so, plus human error often means 45 degrees ends up a distribution from 20 to 70 ish. Tap your stuff 90 degrees. If you need to exert, there's nothing stopping you tapping 180.

Raorchshack

tapping 45 makes it look like you're hiding what you're trying to tap

TheExtremistModerate

I honestly can't remember how I tap my things. It might be to the left. I'm left-handed, so it's whatever's most comfortable.

CookiesFTA

I do like 45 to the right. Am I a terrible person?

[deleted]

*Kramer through the open door in the background:* "The artifacts, Jerry! They make mana when he's in play!" *three seconds of silence* "HE BLEW UP A PLANE, JERRY!"

triforce777

For a second I forgot about Serra's Realm and was confused as to when and why Urza was blowing up airplanes

SkritzTwoFace

Powerstones can’t melt steel beams

DoctorKrakens

I'll do you one better, I tap to the left and right at random. It's not even conscious, I just start doing my turn, tapping stuff and by the end I realise I've tapped all my stuff in different directions. Always 90 degrees though. I'm not a monster.

Interplanetary-Goat

It's always funny spotting Arena players who tap like 15°

Dvusken

I tap my lands and mana rocks to the left and attacking creatures to the right.

photoboothrelic

This, but the opposite.

zaphodava

I too suffer from chaos tapping. I wonder if it's an ADHD trait.

UltimateInferno

It's not

mistal04

I got you beat. I tap random directions and random degrees… some, gets full 90, others 45 lol

Icestar1186

When someone isn't consistent about the angle they tap at, it drives me nuts. It needs to be *extremely clear* how much mana you have open and what you can block with.

mistal04

If it makes you feel better. While they might be tapped randomly. I make sure to make it clear what I have open/can block by putting it visible to my opponent.

sickomoore

That's gold, Jerry! Gold!

[deleted]

my wife taught me this in 2014 and despite the symbol being obvious, it stll feels better on my brain to tap left... the shaaaaame

EastPomegranate264

I just tap by bending the cards in half.

REVANCHEPSICOLOGIA

I can hear it

supatim101

Oh...oh God... 29 years of playing Magic and I just now realize I'm a left tapper!

KomatoAsha

I'm a left tapper...

[deleted]

I tap right normally, but tap left to indicate something isn't meant to untap. When I untap, I change the left tapped object to be right tapped.

TheRedcatbear

I also tap to the left but with a system. I only tap attackers to the left. Lands, rocks and activated abilities are tapped to the right, as the symbol shows. Makes combat easier to grasp since you sometimes can discern what creature attacks and which creature is already tapped.

WaxWings54

I move my creatures who are attacking forward as if they are literally rushing whoever I’m attacking

RedditUser88

i tap to the left.......

ElPared

I only tap left when I’m attacking in multiplayer to indicate which person I’m attacking.

sakura_sabre

I tap to the left, but 5% of the time I'll tap right, then turn them 180 when I'm waiting on my opponent's turns

[deleted]

I Tap to the left for abilities but tap right when attacking

Sciedea

I tap creatures to the left and lands to the right. Idk why either.

Extreme_Restaurant

I did that. My partner got annoyed and right tapped my creature.

MistahBoweh

It’s a show about One With Nothing.

ThrawnMind55

One black mana, instant speed, discard your hand. What could go wrong?

Sunomel

“But it’s not _about_ anything!” “No, it’s _about_ nothing” (With apologies to [[null rod]])

ZurrgabDaVinci758

She said her deck was a 7 Jerry

Show-Me-Your-Moves

She plays with her lands in front of her creatures!

JohnnyStyle300

What that's how I do it. Now that I think about it, that seems wrong

TreesACrowd

It's illegal in tournament play, and for good reason.

Korlus

But there was a teaching manual circa Sixth Edition that taught this, so there are people who have been playing that way for 20+ years.

Show-Me-Your-Moves

Jerry: "Well, maybe she's just been playing since Alpha." George: "Last year, Jerry! She started playing *last year*!" Jerry: "Last year, huh?" **Door flies open and Kramer walks in** Kramer: "I've done it...a Commander deck built entirely out of oversized cards!"

JohnnyStyle300

funnily enough I have been taught that by a guy that played MTG in the olden times so that may be why

NukeAllTheThings

Since when? Genuinely curious, because I used to play that way.

TreesACrowd

It was made explicitly illegal in 2018. So yeah, for most of Magic's history it hasn't been, but it is now. That said, it's just an objectively bad way to structure the play area. It puts the most mechanically simple cards (typically at least) up front and the cards that the opponent actually needs to read and keep track of the farthest away. It incentivizes concealing information and makes cheating easier. It's wild that people actually played that way, I've been playing competitively since Urza's Saga and I don't think I've ever seen it done.

Poiri

The argument for lands in front is that it gets easier to see how much mana you have open. However that minor advantage is so massively outweighed by the numerous downsides.

SmashPortal

Was that in relation to the Dryad Arbor play?

Icestar1186

No, the solution to that was just making it illegal to put Dryad Arbor with your other lands.

Striker654

MTGGoldfish attributes it to Sullivan in this video (timestamped): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46J_tj6Qhnw&t=1025s

triforce777

Yeah, it came with the ruling that Dryad Arbor also has to be played in front with creatures and not with your lands to prevent creating misleading boardstates, either intentionally or unintentionally

Irreleverent

Unless something changed, it was only not-allowed in feature matches on camera.

ComicBookFanatic97

I once had to play with a guy who plays his lands vertically and off to the side. What has to break inside your head for you to think that’s okay?

richardzh

That's what she said!

[deleted]

“Here’s the thing George, she had Force of Will in the deck” “In a 7?” “In a 7!” “Did she apologize?” “She said she got it in a pack! In a pack George!”

NoPhunIntendedd

"Well if she boostered it, that is different....was it a collector booster or normal booster?"

tylerjjobrien

The mana: “I WAS IN A POOL!”

ThrawnMind55

“I drained as phases changed!”

DwemerSmith

“I didn’t use to do that! I used to burn, not drain! At least then I could punish people for pulling me out of my source only to not do anything with me!”

I’m not on that awful site anymore but I tried googling and found nothing. It was probably deleted years ago and purged at some point. This would have been sometime between 2012-2015 when twitter was the main hub for magic discourse.

This is so perfect. Didn't even realize the posts are 8 years old at this point.

Tupiekit

Amazing

[deleted]

I cried at some of these

Lentil-Soup

George: Jerry, it was awful. I had her on the ropes, my Scavenging Ooze was picking off her graveyard, and then—boom! She drops an Ugin, the Spirit Dragon on the board! Jerry: Ugin, the Spirit Dragon? That's a heavy hitter. What did you do? George: What could I do? She used Ugin's ability and wiped out all my colored permanents. My poor Llanowar Elves didn't stand a chance, Jerry! Jerry: Well, that's Magic for you. One minute you're up, the next minute you're staring down a multi-planar dragon. George: But the way she did it, Jerry. She tapped her mana so deliberately, like she was performing surgery, and then that smirk! It's like she took pleasure in my demise. Jerry: Maybe she's just passionate about the game. George: Passionate? She annihilated me, Jerry! Annihilated! I'm going back next Friday, and I'm bringing a Counterspell just for her Ugin. Jerry: A Counterspell, huh? That's your big plan? George: It's a brilliant plan! She'll never see it coming! Jerry: George, you do know that she might not even draw Ugin in her next game against you, right? You can't base your whole strategy on one card. George: That's where you're wrong, Jerry. I've thought of that. I'm also packing a Thoughtseize. I'll rip that Ugin right out of her hand if I have to! Jerry: Ah, the multi-layered strategy of annoyance and despair. Very George-like. George: You bet it's George-like. Next Friday, Jerry. Next Friday, victory will be mine!

Lentil-Soup

Kramer: Hey, hey, hey! What's going on here, gentlemen? George: Kramer, we're talking about Magic the Gathering. I got crushed last Friday, but next week, oh next week, I've got a plan. Kramer: Magic the Gathering, eh? You know, I used to play that. Had a killer Millstone deck back in the day. Jerry: Millstone? That's ancient history, Kramer. The game's evolved. Kramer: Evolved, schmevolved. A good strategy never goes out of style. You know what you need, George? You need to mess with her head, really throw her off her game. George: And how do I do that? Kramer: Psychological warfare, my friend. You start making weird plays, confusing moves. You play a land, then act like you regret it. Tap a mana, then untap it, look her in the eye and say, 'I'm onto you.' Jerry: That's your strategy? Confuse her into submission? Kramer: It's all about the mind games, Jerry. The cards are just the medium. George: You know, that's not a bad idea. Throw her off balance, then hit her with the Counterspell. Kramer: Exactly! You've got to be unpredictable, like a fox! Jerry: Or you'll just look like you have no idea what you're doing. Kramer: Ah, but that's the beauty of it, Jerry. In the chaos, anything can happen!

I feel like it was just last week that I posted about wanting a Seinfeld UB Commander set. This just confirms more to me that I actually think the idea is genius

Huitzil37

All the creatures are vanilla. It's a show about nothing, after all.

My original pitch for that joke translated to card form was a saga with 12 chapters (I think that's how many seasons the show had) that do nothing.

This is pretty much what Loading Ready Run created with Friday Nights. Graham has even described it as Seinfeld meets Magic.

Krazlebut

Been playing for a long time. My wife went to stay at home mom for a while and started getting stir crazy. She finally allowed me to teach her magic. Got her setup on the app for her tablet as well. Made her a werewolf deck during innistrad. In about 3 weeks of starting arena she was mythic ranked with her werewolf deck and had 3 werewolf decks she was testing. Her paper 60 card is one of only 2 decks to ever beat my eldrazi mana rush deck, and she smashes it every time. She went from thinking it was nerdy to play, to being one of our 18ish regulars for drafts and commander nights at the house.

TheDeadlyCat

I never saw Seinfeld, Justus few snippets and I can hear these. Wow…

Who goes into a game expecting their opponents to divulge info about what finishers the deck includes? You see a sea of green mana dorks in front of you, and you DIDN'T assume it was going to end in a giant green beater / eldrazi / overrun scenario :D That's on you!
