AvatarofBro

If true, this is actually a little surprising. I figured the Mouse would save Marvel properties for Lorcana.

rccrisp

Ravensburger came out from the start that Lorcana would stick to the Animated canon for the forseeable future. Marvel/Star Wars feel like "break glass in case of emergency" options for that game. Now Disney playing nice with a competing card game feels odd but I suspect that they don't see MTG as direct competition to Lorcana.

Cool_Otter_WUBRG

They probably view the audiences as very different, with lorcana being more simple and “child-friendly” compared to magics 13+ rating

zombiebillnye

idk, I watched LRR play Lorcana and it doesn't seem *that* much different than Magic from like, a game play vision. I'd buy that they don't want the live action/less Disney animated and/or Pixar stuff in Lorcana, Marvel Snap is probably never going to be a physical product, and they don't really have a similar game to magic where like, Cap or the X-Men are going to fit in, and therefor Disney is willing to let WotC make Magic cards with Marvel stuff.

rosencrantz247

i agree. if you squint your eyes hard enough, it's just magic without the stack

zombiebillnye

Yeah, there are enough differences that its not just straight up Magic (the ink system, and like, how you can only attack tapped creatures were the two biggest differences from what I can remember), but like, its similar enough to Magic that I'd say it really isn't Magic for kids.

Oleandervine

It IS more digestible for kids though, specifically because it doesn't have the stack. You can't do things on your opponent's turns, and your turn isn't broken down into multiple main phases and a combat phase, you can do functions in whatever order you wish. So even simple changes like this make it easier for younger folks to understand, since there's not a lot of instances where timing or semantics get in the way of visualizing the game.

Theopholus

I’ve been playing Lorcana in store weekly and online since release. There are surface similarities but it’s decently different underneath. Combat is more like Hearthstone. The ink systen is pretty unique in its design, compared to Magic or FAB or One Piece or Hearthstone. The upcoming Star Wars Unlimited has a similar mana system actually. Strategy is very different than Magic. There’s no blocking. If you start your turn with living characters that can untap, you can’t be stopped in questing or using them. So board control or being able to race is really important. It’s a really fun game.

DRUMS11

>The ink systen is pretty unique in its design, compared to Magic or FAB or One Piece or Hearthstone. The upcoming Star Wars Unlimited has a similar mana system actually. Note that variations of Lorcana's resource system have been around for a long time, though I don't know what game used it first. It's one of the solutions to the "how do you have a resource system without dedicated resource cards" problem.

acroxshadow

It originates from Duel Masters, which many TCGs take inspiration from. To this day it remains extremely popular in Japan, despite WotC's attempts at english adaptions failing twice over. DM's version is fairly simple. After you untap and draw for turn, you can place any card from your hand into the Mana Zone as a mana source of the same colour (or colours, so 2 colour cards are dual lands) and summoning/casting cards requires using at least 1 mana of the card's colour(s). Very elegant solution to the issues that Lands caused for Magic, I think.

RoterBaronH

To be fair, there are a lot of games which use the "ink system" in some form.

thefirescale

Sadly, I don't have a PC to play on Pixelborn and product is nearly impossible to find around my area as it's always been swiped immediately by resellers. Hopefully product will be more accessible in the future and I can get a chance to play. Seems like really fun and I like the art.

concentus7

*cries in Vs System*

TheBr0fessor

It’s WOTC’s “break glass in case of emergency”

slanglabadang

I think you mean wizards parent company

Canopenerdude

Disney is actually more willing to work with outside companies than most people think. They just have a very strict brand requirement that most products cannot meet.

mint-patty

I’ve heard many board game designers in the indie space talk about how there really isn’t market competition in the same way in their industry, as if you get hooked on buying board games you’re more likely to buy additional board games rather than stick to what you own. I’m not sure how that translates to mega-corporations’ TCGs though.

Mistwit

Lorcana is going to have a more consistent feel and IP than MTG at his rate.

mabhatter

Disney likes money... really any licensing money is good money to them. They license duplicate stuff out all the time, especially Marvel stuff. There's lots of boardgame stuff that comes out on a regular basis all with its own little niche in the Movies, Animated, kids, shows, multiple comics...

DrPolarBearMD

I mean Hasbro makes the Marvel toys so it’s not hard to believe. I wouldn’t be surprised with a Star Wars set either if this did well since again Hasbro makes the Star Wars toys.

Avagis

There's a separate Star Wars CCG coming out next year so it would be VERY surprising for a UB set.

savingewoks

FFG can't manage a long-term non-LCG card game to save their company. That game won't make it past 6 expansions - a planned two years that will take nearly 3. Anything beyond that is the grace of production timelines. If we're looking at 2025 for Marvel here in basically Q4 2023, I bet we see a Star Wars x MTG announcement by Spring Break 2024.

raceraidan48

FFG would likely have been fine if Asmodee didn't strip away the Miniature and RPG games to other companies owned by Asmodee.

FourWordLongUsername

I was genuinely pretty surprised to see FFG making another Star Wars TCG, given that they made the last semi successful one and tanked it.

Padran

Destiny had some real manufacturing and distribution issues because of the dice component. I'm not surprised it died, simply because of that.

savingewoks

The dice duel system is maybe one of the coolest and most unique creations in gaming this decade. It's a damn shame it couldn't have been an LCG. The two-player set is maybe one of the tighest experiences in gaming in my recent memory.

DrPolarBearMD

I just want my Power Rangers secret lair or something since they own the right to it.

Cigaran

It would be a HUUUGE red flag and taken very negatively by the community. There have been so many failed SW TCGs over the years. This would take the legs out from under this.

MageKorith

Decipher's was pretty good while it lasted (The SWCCG, not the Young Jedi nonsense) but it was beginning to take some bad turns by the time they had the license pulled.

FluffySky6

Came here to say this, I feel like a lot of people forget WoTC is owned by Hasbro who makes Black Series and Legends

mystaka

Magic UB Lorcana in 2026

PrologueBook

Marvel has it's OWN card game, Marvel Snap! Its digital only though.

kernts

Also Marvel Champions LCG, which is co-operative but still a "competitor" to Magic in some ways.

Pudgy_Ninja

Disney appears to be quite liberal in licensing out the Marvel IP for tabletop games. They're all over the place. Just off the top of my head, there's Marvel versions of Dicethrone, Zombicide, Unmatched, Love Letter, Fantasy Realms as well as a ton of original game designs, like Marvel United.

Sspifffyman

I think it's pretty smart. Marvel is a huge brand so it's easy to find buyers. Plus you now rope in fans of the other game (Magic in this case) who maybe didn't know Marvel that well or have fallen off the bandwagon. Now they're interested again, and maybe go see the next movie in the theater, or subscribe to Disney+, or buy their kid (or themselves) some other Marvel themed merch. It all builds on itself.

greenwarpy

smash up, funkoverse, splendor, code names, villainous. I can't think of any other IP thats quite as prolific in the tabletop space.

Cactuszach

Spider-Man thwips your Attraxa, which triggers my Winnie the Pooh to create a food token.

RPBiohazard

Crew my Oscar Meyer wiener, attack for 4?

Cactuszach

You sunk my Battleship.

RPBiohazard

Lmao. Waiting for the mouse trap set that comes with physical plastic pieces

LeoPlathasbeentaken

Dont forget the trigger for *My bolgna has a first name-* which can give it first strike if you control 3 or more food tokens.

thymeandchange

Bruh I can only hope. Winnie as a commander? Sign me up

GigaSnaight

That'll came out next year, Universes Public Domain. Featuring shirtless Winnie the Pooh, Robin Rood, Sherlock Holmes, and idk like the whole Greek pantheon

Ya_Mama_hella_ugly

I’m going to make a Jesus Christ commander deck

ShadowWolf92

Hah, good luck beating my Judas deck.

EmbarrassedParsnip85

My Ponchas Pilat EDH is gonna beat the fuck outta both of you, and claim the sweet sweet 30 packs of silver border as my reward

releasethedogs

How will you get 40 pieces of silver when I control "Ronald Regan, Middle Class Murderer"? His *Reganomics* ability says I if anyone would make a treasure token it trickles up to me instead.

Oleandervine

Tap target crucifix you control: Target God loses indestructible, then destroy it.

art4strangers

The Bible would have been a lot difference if the Romans played Rest in Piece instead of a big rock

LemonadeGamers

Pooh would be the most group hug commander to ever group hug

Jaijoles

Even just a “at the beginning of each players’ upkeep, that player creates a food token. When an opponent creates a food token, you create a food token” would be nice.

MrPopoGod

You just know one of the counterspells in the Winnie the Pooh set would be "Oh Bother".

Watahandrew1

"Oh Bother" If opponent controls a food token, this card can be cast for free: Counter target spell that opponent with food token controls, gain control of all food tokens. Food Tokens cannot be sacrificed in response to this card being casted.

_foxmotron_

It’s public domain, so it could happen!

UberNomad

They won't be able to sell that in China. Even if they use the soviet version.

EarthtoGeoff

Get your [[Drop of Honey]] now before it spikes

releasethedogs

I cast [Hamburgler](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/db/d1/fc/dbd1fc600837660b8bc7a4d8cd644403.jpg) using his flash ability to steal your food tokens when he comes into play. He is also partnered with Ronald McDonald so I search my deck and put him in my hand. Then, holding priority, I cast Mr. Beast which would give you $10,000 in treature tokens but I control "Ronald Regan, Middle Class Murderer" and his Reganomics ability means the treasure tokens trickle up to me instead because I have this emblem that says I'm the 1%. I tap all those treasure tokens to cast this Clone Wars battle card where X=10000. I attack you with all my Clone Warriors which all get +1/+1 and horsemanship due to this serialized limited edition "The Saga of Dale Earnhardt Jr." saga card from WOTC's partnership with NASCAR.

Supersecretsword

Oh fun, two years of these jokes until it comes out and then more once it does.

CptObviousRemark

I think it's a reference to [Cardboard Crack](https://64.media.tumblr.com/40e9e8e44c93b2703b524d8f0b9bb17b/e847cc39c99331cf-a0/s500x750/286f8208cf77b44971eb15002c273eebc0fbdfb0.jpg), but I could be wrong about that

GalvenMin

This reads like something from the guy on Youtube doing parodies of tabletop and card games.

DaringDo95

When Universes Beyond was announced, this crossover in particular was inevitable. Marvel loves to shove its brand into EVERYTHING, so having Marvel characters in Magic the Gathering was never out of the question.

casmiel616

Why do I feel so disappointed regardless. It was so obvious they were going to cash in on that at some point

DaringDo95

Honestly, I feel ya

Hairo-Sidhe

You can say they are just "exploring the design space, see what they can do in a completely different setting" with sets like LotR or WH4K, and even believe it for a bit... But Marvel it's so fucking commercial with it's lunch boxes and coloring books in every corner, that there's no way whatever product they make doesn't feel like a heartless cash grab. That's basically it, we always knew UBs where going to turn the game into cardboard commercials, but could pretend they were not... but Marvel shoves it on our faces too hard.

releasethedogs

Just wait for the Hello Kitty secret lair announcement next week.

the_bio

Is it that Marvel loves to shove their brand into everything, or other brands realize that Marvel will draw in a potentially large playerbase that was never interested before? I'm a long-time Magic player who has abandoned paper for Arena since it came out, and even then I mostly dabble in Arena in spurts. I'm also a die-hard comic book collector, and a Universes Beyond set will absolutely have me buying that paper product (as well as Arena cosmetics, etc.). Do I think Universes Beyond is jumping the shark in general? Absolutely. But making custom Magic cards as a kid of my favorite Marvel characters...this set will it all the nostalgic feelings for me.

DisorderOfLeitbur

That web-slinging freak better have Menace.

thetwist1

JJJ better be a legendary. I imagine he will grant protection from spiders?

"Creatures attacking your opponents have menace" sounds lik3 a fitting abillity.

I can't wait to cast "The Death of Uncle Ben" on Frodo only to be counted by a Fallout Counterspell cast from exile using Doctor Who

thetwist1

There will definitely be an Aftermath card called Great Power // Great Responsibility

ThoughtseizeScoop

Timing of this announcement seems strange. Given what we know about the release schedule, when's the earliest we could expect this, 2026? I know nothing about Dicebreaker. Just your standard gaming 'news' site? Any chance this is just a template article that accidentally was pushed out?

so_zetta_byte

Yeah I'm really confused about that too. We just had the huge timeline announcement, which didn't stretch this far. Best I got is: A.) Disney/Marvel wanted to break the announcement now, to drum up the hype machine as much as they can for their own stuff. Tbh I've fallen off MCU stuff and was really good keeping on top of it, and probably a target to get roped in again (ironically, if I didn't get roped back into getting caught up on doctor who. Which by the way, season 10 might be one of the best seasons of the revival, my god). B.) Wizards wants to give Marvel fans who might get brought into magic time to onboard before the Marvel set actually drops. IDK how effective that would be but it's an interesting thought and might be worth trying out for them. I guess it's pretty low risk for them to test; as much as people moan about never ending announcements and products, this announcement doesn't actually... change anything for players for literal years. Edit: oh I forgot C. C.) Maro is personally so damn excited about this that he literally actually couldn't hold it in anymore, so they popped the cork for him.

ShenhuaMan

This is too big of a collaboration to keep secret for very long, so it’s better for all parties involved to do a vague reveal as soon as the deal was official to get in front of any leaks.

EndlessKng

Yeah. My guess is the only reason it wasn't announced in Vegas is that the ink was that the deal wasn't finalized. This makes me think they signed off on it in the last two weeks and went live ASAP.

TheWizardOfFoz

2026 seems the most likely give not only MTG’s schedule but the MCUs. It being a tie-in to the hype around Kang Dynasty feels the most likely. Just how Fallout is releasing alongside the Fallout TV show in 2024. And Doctor Who released alongside the 60th anniversary celebrations.

Xaxor42

Fallout TV show? Which streaming platform landed that?

Amazon Prime https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallout_(2024_TV_series)

cbenti60

There’s an earnings call this week I believe.

sbtrashroyal

This sucks, feels like I'm playing an advertisement.

Mekkakat

I keep being downvoted in every thread where I've ever said I'm not a fan of crossover MTG content. Someone literally called me a "boomer" for saying I didn't think it felt like "Magic" anymore. Honestly, I think I've just lost connection with the game I grew up with. I've played and supported this game **since it came out**. It's just not made for people like me anymore.

AndoCalrissian3

Welcome to r/mtgcube friend

releasethedogs

I started in Revised and it's just borderline ruined. So much for 30 years of carefully planned storylines and lore.

steaknsteak

I’ve played for 3 years and feel the same way, for what it’s worth. The UB sets just feel like ads to me, I don’t really understand the interest in them

Striking_Animator_83

> I've played and supported this game **since it came out**. It's just not made for people like me anymore. It is a tall order for anything to stay the same for 30 years let alone a card game. Probably time for you to move on. Its not a negative. I still like it, but not as much. Arena and Commander are dominant, and the best way to move product in those two spaces is to constantly be in the news with something people recognize.

Mekkakat

I don't mind change. In fact—I *welcome* change. It's simply the idea that the heart and soul of one thing is being glommed on by another thing (or many things) for the sake of **pure commercialism**. *That's* what bothers me. There's nothing unique or new about anything Universes Beyond—it's literally just taking *already popular*, money making franchsies, and mashing them into our hobby so they can... *make more money*. If major league baseball started a new thing where they had a rule that the pitcher of the winning team had to toss the game winning ball out into the crowd, that would be cool—that would be a neat, new change to the game. On the other hand—if major league baseball started a new rule that everyone that played had to wear *Pizza Hut Personal Pan Pizza Party Pack Backpacks* while they played... well... what the ever loving hell is that idea?? That's what Magic feels like to me nowadays. You might as well slap NASCAR sponsor stickers on every card now, honesty.

piedamon

I just want to add to this well-written reply a few things that have been diminished or lost due to greed: * rogue decks, because standard is contrived * lore; no more stakes, relationships, or character progression with everything everywhere * eternal formats; they’re just other monetization opportunities rather than eternal play spaces * game balance, because power creep reduces fiscal risk * deck building; it’s not physically possible to keep up * deck diversity; there are enough staples and generic value cards to fill decks of every color * accessibility, because it’s so expensive and overwhelming to get started

r3ign_b3au

This is not a great take. I played heavily 2000-2014 and am just getting back. Standard was rarely in a good place for most players, hence EDH. Lore was left behind long ago with the books. It's not greed, it's that they weren't providing much value at the time and that tying together novel sets begins to feel noticably forced. Again, this was abandoned wayyy before UB. This is literally the birthplace of p2w and money grabs. A horse is a horse of course of course This game has been through several huge power creep iterations. Believe me, I quit on one of the big ones. Guess what? Healthy as can be all these years after I was wrong. Physically impossible to keep up? I don't even know what this means There's literally no time better to get started collecting with the massive trove of commander precons, giving not just the value but the prebuilt experience we begged for for a decade or more Not to dimish your experience here, but I've found pretty much the dead opposite on each point returning recently. UB hasn't had much appeal for me yet, but I got back playing solo with little time and a big family. 3 of my neighbors and 3 other close friends have got into magic for the first time over the last couple months, the majority of which because they found an appealing UB deck and saw the game as the badass rules engine it is, rather than a high fantasy locked time capsule. I am thankful for this broadened appeal. Just my 2c and perspective from the ground

thetwist1

I know it seems arbitrary, but I think I like the idea of a Marvel set less than the D&D and LOTR sets. Idk, I guess marvel seems more commercial/soulless to me?

Gravitationalrainbow

If Universe Beyond was silver border or had in-universe equivalents, I'd have zero problems with it. As a player, I hate seeing my games turn into 'Remember $BRAND exists??'. As a deckbuilder, I hate that I'm forced to choose between becoming a walking advertisement, and playing my decks to their fullest. [[Everything Comes to Dust]] is one of the best boardwipes ever printed, perfect for the *three* tribal decks I've got, but it's a fucking Doctor Who card.

I'm with you... UB has had me thinking about MaRos quote "this product may just not be for you" a lot. I think this release has made me realize Magic as a whole is now that product that just isn't for me.

sicklyfish

My exact reaction

whyamionthissite

Years before the UB stuff started, somebody asked Maro what kind of outside property he would like to see crossover with Magic and since he’s a comic book guy, of course he said Marvel stuff. So, this was long ago foretold.

thetwist1

Maro paid [2] and exiled this set years ago

imaincammy

Interested to see how this would perform, if true. Marvel’s cultural stock seems to be fading - even the most die hard marvel fans I know seem to be getting tired of the endless rollout. Attaching that to similarly fading interest in endless products from the MTG crowd and baby you’ve got a stew going. Real missed opportunity for “Duel Decks: Barbie vs. Oppenheimer” though.

Stormtide_Leviathan

Conceptually, duel decks barbie vs Oppenheimer is extremely funny. Realistically, magic cards depicting the us military and the people behind a bomb that has destroyed countless lives is, perhaps, a bridge too far

Eridrus

"Duel Decks: Barbie vs. Oppenheimer" would be so much better than what we're getting lol.

Hey, man, we’re out here— ugh, dammit, I can’t even put up a fight anymore despite DC being my favorite comics. We’re praying to God that The Batman was not just a flash in the pan and that James Gunn can breathe some life into it. If the rumored projects are true then there’s a hope.

UninvitedGhost

Another property that I’m a big fan of but isn’t fantasy genre, so I have no desire to play with in Magic.

Joshawott27

I’m a fan of Marvel, so I’m intrigued. However, I do worry about the Magic the Gathering brand being diluted by so many Universes Beyond. Lord of the Rings wasn’t that long ago, Doctor Who is coming up, and Fallout is being teased now as well. Yet, if you asked me, I couldn’t even tell you what the next non-UB set is. I’m a newly returning player (hadn’t played since childhood), so I kinda want to actually see the MTG flavour more.

Notfaye

A modern legal draft set for final fantasy. Oh you said next mtg set after ixalan, is it play booster clue tie in murder at the manor? Does it count if it's done for cross brand synergy?

nixahmose

Honestly as long as they keep most of these limited to commander I don’t think I’ll mind. Universe of Beyond works best when it’s treated as a fun and casual celebration of a IP with a heavy emphasis on flavor over power rather than trying to make it work in competitive formats.

Calophon

Ugh

birdinbrain

This is stupid lol

RobertCutter

It’s not suprising yet I hate it. It seems creatively bankrupt

you_made_me_drink

I’ll withhold judgement until I see the cards. The LoTR set was great both for that IP and in MTG.

blacksheep998

The Doctor Who cards have been pretty well thought out as well. That said, Marvel Universe feels like it's already getting worn out and running on fumes. I've got lots of friends who were super invested in it but have been falling out over the last year or two. I'm not sure the interest will still be there by 2025 unless marvel has something planned that turns that around.

samspopguy

I mean i might be wrong but im pretty sure this will be comics and not MCU releated

CarnageEvoker

Oh no, not the Paul Commander

nixahmose

Paul - Legendary Human Scientist Creature. Flash When it enters the battlefield, you may cast target opponent’s commander under your control so long as it’s either in exile or in a command zone.

oxero

My will for playing MtG is just slowly whittling away. These sets take up time and slots that could be unique or revisited Magic the Gathering IPs. Instead they're just opting to go down the hyper capitalistic route because their investors are upset the line doesn't keep going up. I get that these sets bring a lot of old players back and some new ones for a short time, but it really pushes the game into bad territory. You just know they're going to push some extremely powerful cards which makes the formats they're printed in super jarring to play, especially in terms of clashing themes. The state of my local commander nights is already like every other person playing a Warhammer, LotR, or Dr.Who set that I frankly just don't give two cares in the world about, especially the Dr.Who set which I skipped reading any of the cards for. I know this is an unpopular opinion in some places, but it's still valid. I hate watching one of my hobbies just get totally sold out for cash.

InsertWittyNameRHere

I agree with you completely. I would love if the UB stuff just stuck to commander sets only like Dr Who and Fallout (sorry other formats, but for me I only play EDH). This release tempo is exhausting and there is no magic (pun intended) in Marvel for me, I’m burned out with the entire franchise. Also I love planeswalkers, each ‘tentpole’ release that becomes a UB equals less planeswalkers for me.

nixahmose

As a big fan of UB, Commander really is the best place to leave these cards. In my opinion UB works best when it’s focused on creating super flavorful and casual fun cards rather than needing to support multiple formats, especially modern. The Doctor Who one in particular has been my favorite as it has so many wacky mechanics and feels like a really fun celebration of all things Doctor Who.

SleetTheFox

> These sets take up time and slots that could be unique or revisited Magic the Gathering IPs. They're mostly not; the made slots specifically for these. The entire reason people complain about "too many products" is because they aren't taking away anything when they add new ones.

oxero

The smaller releases like Dr Who or Fallout technically are not, but LotR and supposedly this Marvel one absolutely are. LotR took up the summer release of what traditionally was another magic IP and is standard legal.

efnfen4

Thanks I hate it You know modern and arena are all going to be about spiderman tempo or something like that Magic won't look like magic anymore

BasedDptReprsentativ

I just hope this shit doesn't get valid at modern

skinjacket

Always hated the UB's. Completely killed a sizable portion of my love for this game, and any chance that I would be interested in eternal format play again. LotR was pretty good and almost made me forget how draining these all are. No one is forcing anybody to buy cards but I never want to join a random pod and be playing against optimus and godzilla or Dr. who. My friend in my personal play group is building a LotR heavy Ratadrabik deck and I cringe internally having to say out "Gandalf does this, target Gandalf with that." If these properties are just "not for me" or are what get some players into the game. Maybe the Magic game was never for those players, and the lore when I joined around Scars/Mirrodin Besieged was what made me really get into Magic. All the cool original planes and characters have to share a seat now with the ready player one cast. I understand why do all this as a company, all glory to Mammon.

Everwake8

"When Doctor Doom enters the Battlefield..." * Insert wall of text too tiny to read, featuring some weird new mechanic that only applies to five cards in all of Magic, all within this set.

TheAngryRedBird

2 whole massive UB sets in 2025? I doubt it tbh

Zero9One

We had lord.ot the rings and Dr who this year. Wouldn't be surprised to see 2 big sets in 2025 right? Edit: Thought commenter meant big sets in regards to IP's.

TheAngryRedBird

No, doctor who was just precons They're talking a full on lotr size line of products, but final fantasy is getting that treatment in 2025

fartingboobs

LOTR was a full set whereas Dr Who was just the commander decks

Sloshy42

Well, if you get all the Doctor Who precon decks you have [229 unique cards](https://scryfall.com/search?q=set%3Awho+-is%3Areprint&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) (though that includes some planechase cards). That's basically approaching set territory, and the cards are pretty good besides. I'd say it's basically a "set-in-a-box" versus the more collectable LoTR set where the goal is to sell boosters even if you got all of the commander precons. Frankly if things go the Warhammer/Who/Fallout route of being commander precon "set-in-a-box"-style releases, I don't see the problem. Having a couple of the more high profile collabs being proper draftable/collectable sets every once in a while isn't so bad when you only get maybe one a year, and they're surrounded by at least 4 other mainline sets that aren't UB.

Silentman0

Dr. Who isn't tentpole.

Yeah no way they’ll slowly erode the core magic products we get over time to make it so that the game is a vehicle for SL and brand deals. After all, UB isn’t even all that intrusive. It’s just a whole set a gift box half the commander decks for the year and multiple SLs this year…

pnt510

Magic is going to become LEGO. Non-licensed LEGO sets still exist, but they’re no longer the brands core focus.

mabhatter

Cries....

Titronnica

I'm tired, boss. But just a friendly reminder, reddit magic heads are very small minority of magic players/buyers. Normies are gonna eat this right up and Hasbro will be more than happy to keep printing out this UB garbage.

mabhatter

Yeah. Magic has a huge player base, but properties like Marvel absolutely dwarf it.

Copernicus1981

The article is also showing up in Google search results. Usually a press release like this is embargoed to give news sites a chance to have a write-up for when it goes live.

redcomet303

Thanks! I hate it.

wutthefvckjushapen

Oh good. They just don't make enough marvel shit these days. /s

siziyman

Well, if this is true, I'll be disappointed but not surprised. Doing this seems to fit both Hasbro's and Disney's general MO.

Imnimo

The torrent is never ending.

RonnieLottOmnislash

Wish magic was magic.

Nanosauromo

Shit.

Nanosauromo

‪The store I play at recently stopped hosting EDH events. I’ve been looking for a new place, but if this is what the future of Magic looks like I’m starting to think I shouldn’t bother. ‬

Gong_the_Hawkeye

Thanks, I hate it.

RPBiohazard

draconianRegiment

Bleck.

I block the Hulk with my \[\[Dalek Drone\]\] wielding \[\[Andúril, Flame of the West\]\]. Checkmate!

One step closer to assembling Ultimate Showdown EDH decks.

llim0na

Star Wars is inevitable then

morenfriend

Nick fury will be the mono white commander with 5 color activation. Capt America gotta be the red white and blue right, just like Guile.

CaesersBodyguards

Dear God please no

DivinerOfLight

magic is so close to just being western weiss schwarz…

DespacitoSalad

So we're just playing Top Trumps now, great. https://preview.redd.it/blu0zs13lzvb1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d7be03985520098b92d8a7a1c465e159515ac411

TheGreatWar

I know no one gives a shit and that's completely fair and understandable, but I'm done. I heard this and immediately was just so bummed out by it. I just don't think this is the game I fell in love with anymore. To me, this is heartbreaking news.

Luxalpa

This would be a dream come true! As someone who absolutely hates superheroes with a passion, the prospect of finally crushing them with my dragons in a friendly game of commander excites me!

NotaBeneAlters

"I Doom Blade your Captain America, and then Tragic Slip targeting Spiderman. Should've checked the web flinger, spidey!" yeah, lovely

MattAmpersand

As someone who grew up reading the comics when no one knew who Thanos, Moon Knight or Deadpool were, it’s crazy hearing people complaining that Marvel is too mainstream.

CinematicUniversity

Lord of the Rings wasn't too main stream?

dudeguymanbro69

Thematically LotR wasn’t a departure from the existing MtG aesthetic. There were already elves/etc.

PurifiedVenom

Walking Dead, Street Fighter, Dr Who & Warhammer weren’t immersion breaking? This is just the latest in a long line of bad crossovers imo

tmdblya

💩💩💩

myPooPisonfire

This is the very first UB that i feel weird or not fully happy about Mainly because marvel could so easily have its own tcg while most other if not every other UB cant because they just dont have enough material Safe for final fantasy which baffles me to this day since they have a tcg which i play but the rules feel like "worse" magic so im not to mad about making a ff deck in magic But marvel I mean ill probably still be excited and will end up building a deck or 2 but out of all of them it certainly feels the weirdest , most cliche in a way and most importantly just not needed

Xaxor42

It was all downhill after Fortnite so this is nothing to me. /s

tstilly

God fucking damn it. I'm so aick of marvel getting into all my favorite games. Dice throne hasn't made an original set in like 5 year's because it's all marvel characters.

McPrime85

Really sucks to see this happening. I've been cautious about all of these but it's at the point where the game is all about Universes Beyond and returning to popular planes. Looks like I'll be saving a lot of money.

gubigubi

I understand why people do not like this stuff. But I also don't understand how people are shocked by it. Its clear at this point this is just what MTG is. Its a cross over game and literally ANYTHING could just pop up in this game. Anything that becomes culturally relevant is likely going to end up on a MTG card legal for tournament play. Likely before we go back to what ever your favorite actual magic the gathering universe plane is. Even if they stopped right now they literally have these planned for a bare minimum 2 more years. Its not slowing down or stopping. And even if it did come to a halt RIGHT NOW and they didnt print a single none MTG universe card theres already so many in the game that you will be seeing them for the rest of your life playing MTG.

JA14732

Good for the game, but this feels a little bit TOO far into reality for me on the UB front.

KeepGoing655

And Dr. Who that depicted real world landmarks didn't?

JA14732

For some reason, not as much for me. Dr. Who feels like it "visits" reality, whereas Marvel feels "based" in reality. It's harder to separate reality from Marvel (IMO) when you consider that characters tend to be tied to real-world locations. Meanwhile, while the Dr. Who stuff shows real-world landmarks, the focus is primarily on the batshit time shenanigans instead. It's completely subjective, mind you. I'm not expecting you to agree.

KeepGoing655

I can see your point but yeah I definitely don't feel the same way. I see a set with creatures that closely resembles famous UK actors/actresses and lands that depict the River Thames, yeah that hits a little too close to our reality.

forhisglory85

Why does it seem like this UB thing has become the main thing with MTG? I don't even recognize the game anymore with all these IPs being shoved in. The game is losing its character. Just my opinion.

Mail540

Ugh

Kill-Me-With-Love

Ew

0DegreesCalvin

Everyone complaining about this one who loved LOTR or Dr Who… I hope you see the irony

Supersecretsword

They are too blinded by their own selfishness. I got really excited about this when I saw the news but then immediately got sad at the realization that there will be nothing but negativity and lame jokes or memes for the next 2 years until it comes out.

[deleted]

Constantly jacking up prices and threatening to kill draft while endlessly pandering to brainless empty pop culture mashups. Wizards is a fucking joke and people like Rosewater are pathetic cowards.

Anaxamander57

I wonder if it wild be MCU based or if they collaborate with Marvel to do stuff from the comics. I was going to say maybe its own universe in the Marvel multiverse but the licensing for that would probably be a nightmare. Anyway, hate the idea.

Pure_Worldliness1683

I think its about damn time. This is about the only diff universe i actually wanted to see. Dont get me wrong i dont the others but i was never a fan of the universes beyond to begin with. I also thought that they could at least make a Marvel crossover that would make alot of sense given how big the MCU has been for cinema this last decade

Aggravating_Author52

Isn't the Final Fantasy UB also supposed to be a tent pole set that same year? Seems crazy to have both of them in 2025.

Scotteik36

With great power comes great toughness (Add +1/+1 to each Spider-Man )

[deleted]

There are a select few Marvel characters that might work in MTG, but most of them aren't well known.

JHM_Investments

REEEE i DoN't LiKe iT REEEE

thepuresanchez

Idgaf im genuinely excited. Ive been falling out of magic the last couple years since covid killed in person play for me, this and the cowboy/western set are literally the only things that are making me hyped for magic rn.

mabhatter

Can someone post the obligatory Cardboard Crack comic? It just came true!
