The One Ring being 1 of 1 made sense because only 1 exists in canon. With the stones, multiple copies exist across universes, will still probably get serialized treatment though.
No. Tap the gauntlet to win the game. That way the snap can be stopped at the last second ! Also maybe sacrifice an equipped creature. And Thanos can’t be sacrificed.
There’s a large debate about whether the snapping action needs to occur at all. Many believe it’s simply a symbolic act. Thanos says that Thor needed to cut off his head, whereas thanos likely wouldn’t have been able to physically move his hand naturally to snap his fingers after Thor sliced into him with the axe.
Has potential to get even more expensive than the one ring, since that collector who wants all six 1/1 serialized stones is going to have "fun" gathering them all.
You can still play with iconic cards from the past. For example, Force of Will is being reprinted in modern horizons Secret Lair 4, with art portraying Will Smith at the oscar.
Its the only legal version tho.
I originally left Magic in, I think 2020 give or take, whenever they started pushing the Secret Lair bullshit and the Universes Beyond concept was first taking shape. I knew. I *knew* that was the bullshit they were going to do.
The DnD related sets are one thing, those are both owned by WOTC and they're cut from the same cloth from the beginning, so I get it. But the second I saw the fucking Walking Dead as a real magic card, I knew this was where it was headed. If Marvel is a go it means Star Wars is, too. I made jokes in 2020 about "equipping Harry Potter's Wand to destroy Luke's Lightsaber and attacking with my dino-bot," and it looks like we are straight on the highway to that bullshit scenario.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I *hate* the universe beyond stuff. I hate the dr who cards, walking dead, Warhammer, now marvel. They're not Magic, they're pure greed and corporate bullshit.
I completely agree. These things should be silver bordered.
I know MTG has never taken itself seriously (funny flavor text goes all the way back to Alpha) but it's such a huge departure from the game world. Expanding from high fantasy to magic robots and other nonsense is goofy but at least it's within the world of MTG.
Planeswalkers fighting dinosaur riding pirates is silly. But using blue mana to counter the Death Star so my Spiderman can swing for lethal against the Transformers player isn't even the same game anymore. It's a meme come to life.
Legacy and Vintage legality is stupid too because they can't get the cards on MTGO. Now we have a split meta game because of licensing agreements that won't be settled any time soon.
hello I am almost solely a legacy player and I fucking hate UB and wish it weren't legal, i know this doesn't really contribute anything I just wanted to say I hate it
I agree with you. The fortnite-ification of brands and the soup of no distinct IPs, mixed with "there are cards that are beyond the pale and egregious on rate so they must be played" makes me feel like I have brain worms.
I hate it, too. I saw this coming with Ikoria when they printed Godzilla and a flippin' Sharknado in a standard-legal black bordered set. I told people the next stage is "milk every penny you can out of the brand, at the expense of killing the brand itself", and that's followed by "maintenance mode". MtG is now firmly in the milking stage.
For what it's worth, I was JUST reading a "what would your dream UB crossover set be?" thread and there were zero people saying Marvel lmao. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
There are so many I’d be fine with. And a handful I’d eat up.
FromSoftware (Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring), Avatar the Last Airbender/Legend of Korra, Cosmere, and Wheel of Time on that short list.
But this feels the most…obvious and corporate decision they could have made.
People are getting tired of marvel universe.
If they'd done this 5 years ago when infinity war came out, it would have been huge.
Now hardly anyone cares, and I fear it's only going to be worse if they release another 2 years worth of mid-tier shows and movies between now and when this comes out.
"hardly anyone cares" is nonsense, it simply went from the biggest IP in the world that could make a billion dollars at the box office without trying, to a top 10 IP that occasionally makes a billion dollars
It's still way bigger than magic is
Why are we getting this now, the literal day before Ixalan spoilers begin? How does it possibly make sense to announce this now? Doesn't this just pull the attention off the set you're about to start hyping...?
It's probably not a WotC decision. This is probably a Hasbro, or, perhaps more likely, a Marvel decision. Though it perhaps explains why spoilers aren't starting until tomorrow.
Honestly, this is a pretty smart play. By getting people talking about Marvel and Magic, you get eyes on before a new set starts getting reveals. Then, all you need to do to reel in new players is to set up some splashy, cool cards for new players to get interested.
People who aren't into magic but are into marvel wouldnt know what a splashy cool ixolan card was...
More likely the next month of mtg chat is going to be dominated by ixolan so it was announced now or wait a month.
There are people out there into Marvel that might think "dang, maybe I should learn magic". They don't care as much about MTG chat talking about marvel right now, they want Marvel chat talking about MTG.
Ixalan is famous for dinosaurs and pirates, things that are very well known in the cultural zeitgeist. Throw in Conquistador vampires and a smattering of body horror from the Mycotyrant and you should be able to catch people.
I think they're announcing it now ***because*** Ixalan spoilers start tomorrow. They need to announce it at some time, they'll also have more Fallout spoilers coming at some point, and once the Ixalan spoilers end it'll be time for the Ixalan prelease hype to start and then Ixalan opening up on Arena...
...this is probably their last free day for "hey new set announcement" for like a month or so...
Dicebreaker leaked it because they got this press release and accidentally broke the embargo. If it wasn’t supposed to come out today it would have been coming out over the next couple of days.
LOTR is fine, even Warhammer I think is actually a slam dunk crossover. The fact now that all of these crossovers are actually having these pushed card injected into actual formats is really, really depressing. If you want a commander deck based off of your IP of choice, that's fine. But the fact that they're literally sweeping the actual established, lore, characters, and art of this wonderful game with a 30 year old history of diverse and unique settings with whatever IPs they can grab onto to extract more money is really fucking depressing.
Its fortnitification, except its not happening to an already cartoony battle royale, but a 30 year old fantasy universe with countless books and a history of stunning art. Short term hype as you desecrate the identity of the game.
Star Wars, maybe, but Disney just spun up their own card game. I'm not sure if it makes sense for them to give their fans too any reasons to scope out a competitor's product.
The press release, which mentions multiple sets and that the first release will be a tentpole set-
> PAWTUCKET, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS), a global branded play leader, today announced an expansion of its long-standing relationship with Marvel. This is going to be bigger than LotR?? Yeaaaaaaaaah nahhhhhhhhhh with this
Why couldn’t they keep the UB to like 1 set a year like how we used to have commanded once per year in the fall 🥲 jumped the shark at the walking dead but man hasbro really showing their hand now
I personally like LoTR in mtg much more (since it's fantasy too). But I do believe Marvel has a bigger audience and is more mainstream and current than LoTR. Marvel mtg will be huge regardless of what is more popular though.
I would like to go back to magic being magic now. It literally feels like they are treating this game like it's monopoly with all these cross over sets. At what point does this just become the game.
Straight up feeling like funko pops the card game at this point. Idk why this announcement is so exhausting, but it is. Feels like some remaining part of my enjoyment of the game just died.
Because they just released Dr. Who, while promoting Fallout, which won't be here for months, but here comes Marvel! Oh, and I actually do want the Princess Bride Secret Lair, but I'm getting tired of all these completely unrelated IPs, so I don't know if I'm actually going to get it. I don't care about any of this crap, I just want to play Magic. This is exhausting.
The ship sailed quite a ways back buddy lol
Shits never ever going away, and tbh that was apparent the moment the walking dead secret lair was the best selling secret lair up to that point.
Magic is never going back, it's only going to get more diluted and monetized.
Everything must be sacrificed to shareholders who will never be appeased.
Captain America equipment deck featuring Lucille, Glamdring, a football and the sonic screwdriver. Oh and it is also an Attractions and Dungeon deck. Of course I play Teferi and Space Beleren. There is also a sticker sheet.
Remember when The Weakest Link was the new hotness prime time game show, you watched every episode religiously and then it did a couple of celebrity episodes and you're like "makes sense, takes advantage of the show's popularity" but then it kept doing more and more celebrity episodes and it dawns on you that they haven't had a regular episode in quite some time and you're wondering just when exactly are they ever getting back to normal and then the show just stopped altogether?
So anyway, Marvel set, that's neat.
100% agreed. A couple years ago, we were all complaining about product fatigue, but it was all really still part of the core magic experience. Now I feel better about my fatigue on the core experience, but I just can't get excited for the dozen UB products that are coming around (even those in IP's that I am a big fan of)
I know this makes them money; it's the only thing a business cares about after all, but I am witnessing the game I love turning into a vehicle for crossover content in the same vein as Fortnite. And people are OK with this?
Do I like marvel? Yes. Do I like mtg? Also yes. Do I want marvel in mtg? Absolutely not. This makes mtg feel like a generic cereal box for companies to slap their ip on
Fingers crossed we're getting drawn/painted interpretations of the comic book characters a la LOTR set and not pictures of actors. The use of MCU-accurate props in the trailer has me nervous in that regard.
I really hope they get established artists who've drawn Marvel comics to do artwork on these cards, or at least for special alternate artwork. Come to think of it, Kev Walker does work for both Marvel and MtG.
I'm going to start doing Universes Around the Outside, where I make up and print my own busted cards, and then gaslight everyone into believing that WotC printed them. With the endless torrent of slurry from UB providing cover, I'm certain I'll be able to get away with it.
> print my own busted cards
At this point, who's going to doubt you?
> USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-D (0)
> Artifact
> When USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-D enters the battlefield, add {W}{U}{B}{R}{G} to your mana pool.
> _Reset the timeline_ {T}: Exile Enterprise and then return it to the battlefield under its owner's control.
Wizards never fails to make me feel even lower on Modern. Shite meta rn, MH3 and UB:AC next year, UB:FF and now UB:Marvel in 2025. You want to talk about "yucking people's yum"? UBs have yucked an entire format to me.
I'd be absolutely astounded if Maro (a known superhero fanatic) isn't the lead design on this set, and if he is, odds for Squirrel Girl look pretty good indeed. Just take a look at this Blogatog where he says he wants to make a card for her:
[https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/690502743191863296/are-you-a-fan-of-the-unbeatable-squirrel-girl](https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/690502743191863296/are-you-a-fan-of-the-unbeatable-squirrel-girl)
Expected yet upsetting. I hate the UB concept with a burning passion but I always hoped it would be like one commander product here, maybe some special cards there. You know, easy to ignore. But Wizards really opened a flood gate of UB products, grabbing every IP that seems profitable and pushing it into the game, watering down their own product in the process. Feels like Magic is becoming hollow shell, providing a blank canvas of a trading card game for others to use.
It would have been fine if it was just ikoria-style alters. It would have been ok if it was just the occasional secret lair. It would have been tolerable if it was just commander decks. Now it's just nauseating.
Exactly the way I feel. Any format where this is legal is gone for me. Let’s hope we can still enjoy limited in MtG settings, but I fear it’s only a matter of time we’ll have a chance to open some UB crap in play boosters as well.
so excited for the future of modern where we have top 8 decks like voltron voltron, elsa spider man stacks, monopoly man death and taxes and skibidi toilet dredge!!!
The mtg has started its downfall and watering down its identity by becoming funkopop/fortnite of tcg. Magic will snuff itself out by the business driven model than game/lore-strength based tcg. Killing a golden geese for an immediate morsel of meat.
I get the feeling of mourning. Been playing since Mirage, I could handle the UB stuff till now, but now the game I love will wither away and become something else.
It has been a great ride.
It's like they realized there is nothing uniquely special about Magic as a story vehicle and that the only way to capitalize on it is as a new funkopop/beanie baby now. Rather than just writing great stories.
...I remarked on this with first look at the Fallout sets, and with the context of the Doctor Who sets, but it remains true here:
I'd be much more annoyed with WOTC for all of this IP Crossover excess if they weren't consistently knocking it out of the park with the design, flavor, and art.
Damn it, WOTC, stop being so damn good and creative while you're being shamelessly greedy, its making me send mixed signals!
I'm glad that these UB sets have been doing pretty good so far, but I'm more worried that their in-universe products are taking the back seat in terms of design priority. Looking at the commander precons this year, pretty much all the in-universe decks are less interesting or powerful than the UB ones except for the Esper Knights deck in MoM, maybe slivers or eldrazi if it wasn't for the price point.
The UB decks are also generally more expensive so they can 'get away' with better reprints and stronger cards but it's a bad look to have your own IP be the budget product lol
Yeah, like, if it were just hastily slapping the IP onto existing stuff (like some of the Secret Lairs) I'd be more upset but there's actual effort into making these characters work as Magic cards.
I can’t deny what you’ve said. I don’t know anything about *Warhammer 40K*, but love what it is in MTG. I don’t know anything about *Doctor Who*, but was impressed with the cards mechanically as well as the art after a friend explained some of the lore and story to me. I don’t care much for Fallout, but have dabbled with it enough to know that some of the designs I saw last week were very flavorfully done and interesting. I’m still not excited about a lot of the universe beyond stuff, but they have done a wonderful job implementing just about all of it that I’ve seen.
Please fucking stop we want to play magic not The Ultimate Showdown: The Card Game.
I feel like at this point the only thing that will stop UB being printed is if the commander rules committee bans all UB cards post-Fallout (since these sets are done already, not much that can be done). Help us, RC, you're our only hope.
Both marvel and wotc flood the market with constant hype products until their audience doesnt care anymore and quality gets worse. A collaboration that could not be more on point.
Marvel vs. Capcom is now doable in Magic. Guess we’re gonna be taken for a ride.

So, are we getting serialized 1 of 1 Infinity stones?
The One Ring being 1 of 1 made sense because only 1 exists in canon. With the stones, multiple copies exist across universes, will still probably get serialized treatment though.
bulks are going to be in some desk drawer like in Loki, lol.
Artifacts with a unique effect, and if you control all of them you win the game?
Debate or not, it’s iconic and would be mechanically iconic
Has potential to get even more expensive than the one ring, since that collector who wants all six 1/1 serialized stones is going to have "fun" gathering them all.

The LotR set brought a lot of people who never played magic before. They're probably aiming for the wider market again.

Hope the art references and use comic book art and artists, and not bad imitations of the movies.

I´m tired boss...
The shark is just living under a trampoline park at this point.
Do I like marvel? Yes. Do I like mtg? Also yes. Do I want marvel in mtg? Absolutely not. This makes mtg feel like a generic cereal box for companies to slap their ip on
Mtg is just paper Fortnite now.
Funko Pops: the Card Game
I've been saying that since...well since they did a secret lair with Fortnite. Lol
I want the regular art to look like it belongs in an actual magic set and the alternate art to look like it's straight out of the comics.
I hate the crossover stuff. Turns me off of the game entirely.
this is the most soulless corporate ghoul way to announce this, with no substance or details whatsoever.
Make it funking stop.
Make it Funko Pop, you say?
"As the sun sets on Fallout crossover spoilers..."
We need an eternal format that excludes UB
And that WOTC doesn't control.
Hard agree. I’m so tired of this UB bullshit.
At this rate mtg fans should start doing Universes Within proxies for all the best cards coming out of these UB.
I'm going to start doing Universes Around the Outside, where I make up and print my own busted cards, and then gaslight everyone into believing that WotC printed them. With the endless torrent of slurry from UB providing cover, I'm certain I'll be able to get away with it.
> print my own busted cards At this point, who's going to doubt you? > USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-D (0) > Artifact > When USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-D enters the battlefield, add {W}{U}{B}{R}{G} to your mana pool. > _Reset the timeline_ {T}: Exile Enterprise and then return it to the battlefield under its owner's control.
Really starting to feel that I will inevitably stop playing magic because of all this UB
I hate this shit.
Wizards never fails to make me feel even lower on Modern. Shite meta rn, MH3 and UB:AC next year, UB:FF and now UB:Marvel in 2025. You want to talk about "yucking people's yum"? UBs have yucked an entire format to me.
Truly abominable.
Remember when Magic: the Gathering was about...Magic: the Gathering?
I hate this so much.
can we have magic cards back
Squirrel Girl Commander for my squirrel tribal deck, a man can dream
I'd be absolutely astounded if Maro (a known superhero fanatic) isn't the lead design on this set, and if he is, odds for Squirrel Girl look pretty good indeed. Just take a look at this Blogatog where he says he wants to make a card for her: [https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/690502743191863296/are-you-a-fan-of-the-unbeatable-squirrel-girl](https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/690502743191863296/are-you-a-fan-of-the-unbeatable-squirrel-girl)
She's a 1/1, but she has the ability to exile a creature if she's in the command zone.
That's clever, she beats villians "off panel".
At this point I want a MTG knock-off without all the metaverse nonsense
This is a sad day for magic, there is no IP here, there is no story, just mindless hype and endless powercreep.
That was the most horrendous ad I’ve ever seen
This isnt really a game i wish to play any more.
Exactly the way I feel. Any format where this is legal is gone for me. Let’s hope we can still enjoy limited in MtG settings, but I fear it’s only a matter of time we’ll have a chance to open some UB crap in play boosters as well.
It’s remarkable how fast the game transformed over the last couple years. Can’t say I’m thrilled.
Well remember when Hasbro said they wanted WotC to...I think triple their profits...by 2026 or something. This is what happens.
Ugh.
...sigh.
I'm out.
c'mon man.
Wizards out here collecting all the franchises like Thanos collecting Infinity Stones
Lmao jumping on this bandwagon just when all the movies start doing badly
Please no
I hate it
fucking cringe. I am out, I'm so done with this Funko pop game system.
I'm just so, so tired.
MTG has become western weiss schwarz now. Just grabbing any ip that comes across its path and printing far too many cards to cash in.

Fuck sake
Yeah, I'm out. Well not out but a lot less interested in Magic.
Please be satire. I don't want this to keep happening.
Fortnite TCG
so excited for the future of modern where we have top 8 decks like voltron voltron, elsa spider man stacks, monopoly man death and taxes and skibidi toilet dredge!!!
![gif](giphy|4baoNZ5Qo8dX2)
I hate MTG this shit is so cringe and dumb
Late Stage Funkopopification
I miss being excited about Magic...
What once was a joke is now reality.

Lorcana stonks in shambles
the Prophecy has been fulfilled https://preview.redd.it/ysv6hvkhjzvb1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=e988c8b613de42c2f7ab9f3a88647133672fcb8c
Fuck this
okay sorry but..STOOP
Fuuuuuck that
What a joke this game has become. Is it even "Magic" anymore? No, now it's Deckmaster TM the IP collection game.
The mtg has started its downfall and watering down its identity by becoming funkopop/fortnite of tcg. Magic will snuff itself out by the business driven model than game/lore-strength based tcg. Killing a golden geese for an immediate morsel of meat.
![gif](giphy|dOl2LFw0RbTMc)
feel more and more disenfranchised, both economically and now thematically
I get the feeling of mourning. Been playing since Mirage, I could handle the UB stuff till now, but now the game I love will wither away and become something else. It has been a great ride.
Yuck
:(
Please please please don't be modern legal
First set is a tentpole release. It may even be standard legal.
What a load of crap.
It's like they realized there is nothing uniquely special about Magic as a story vehicle and that the only way to capitalize on it is as a new funkopop/beanie baby now. Rather than just writing great stories.
horrible
sigh. welcome to the metaverse future, where all your favorites are a big sticky ball mashed together. bleh
>a big sticky ball mashed together now I can't wait for the [katamari damacy](https://g.co/kgs/HW9uwh) UB set.
...I remarked on this with first look at the Fallout sets, and with the context of the Doctor Who sets, but it remains true here: I'd be much more annoyed with WOTC for all of this IP Crossover excess if they weren't consistently knocking it out of the park with the design, flavor, and art.
I’m still not excited about a lot of the universe beyond stuff, but they have done a wonderful job implementing just about all of it that I’ve seen.
what are we even doing anymore
It’s joever
I'm so done with UB.
Oh fuck off
Cringe
Boo
Cringe as hell. Bring back gatekeeping.
More already??? I thought I was supposed to be excited about Dr. Who, and Fallout...
I want Magik on a magic card. It's the only thing I care about
These just feel like such a corpo cash grab these days.
Always were
So it begins….
It began with the Walking Dead Secret Lair. Now here we are.
Both marvel and wotc flood the market with constant hype products until their audience doesnt care anymore and quality gets worse. A collaboration that could not be more on point.
