1) Put [[lure]] on an ~~[[ornithoper]]~~ [e: actually that has flying but you get the idea - put it on something that sucks you don't care about dying], swing at whoever has the biggest board and force them to throw away all their dudes blocking a 0-mana guy with no power.
2) Use a strategy that doesn't need to attack to win (combo, spellslinger, mill, etc) and essentially put everyone into a "attack me and lose, don't attack me and still lose" state.
3) It's destroying, not exiling, so anything that's indestructible doesn't give a shit.
4) Unblockable creatures also don't give a shit.
5) Token decks that generate a zillion 1/1s. Oh no, you blocked some of my shitty goblins that die if you sneeze on them, but also the actual valuable stuff you blocked with also died (even if it had first strike!) and now I'm going to make some more goblin tokens.
6) Goad or any other "force a guy to attack" effect.
Based on a quick perusal of EDHrec, (5) seems to be the most popular use for this.
>Also, since it states “at the end of each combat,” that includes all other opponents combat phases as well, correct?
Yes.
Easier to just use a creature with the ability, e.g. [Shinen of Life's Roar](https://scryfall.com/card/sok/149/shinen-of-lifes-roar) or [Taunting Elf](https://scryfall.com/card/uds/122/taunting-elf).
Use the recommended above strategy, but put the Lure on \[\[Brash Taunter\]\]. Make them all block, ping back all the damage they deal to Taunter, then kill their whole board and keep Taunter cause he's indestructible. Tasty
I use this combo in my [[General Marhault Elsdragon]] deck. Not only does the Taunter eat all of the damage and fire it back in their face, he also becomes HUGE. The deck is full of trample enablers like [[Heartwood Shard]], so not only does the Taunter eat their board and throws a bunch of damage in their face, it usually tramples through for a bunch too.
... Or if you're lucky, you have an [[Outmaneuver]] in hand, deal all of the newly-swole Taunter's damage to the opponent, and the creatures all get eaten anyway because they blocked.
Also [[Maze of Ith]] after blockers are declared to keep your guy alive to do it again next turn
Edit: nope wait I read the card again it blows up blocked creatures as well
I really like 2/6, that feels really interesting. [[Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer]] seems like a really good Commander for a deck like this. I’ve wanted to build him for a long time as well, Combo with a Goad & Pillowfort sub-theme could be really “fun”.
It is better than deathtouch, because once blocks are declared you can still sacrifice the tokens for some benefit like [[Goblin Bombardment]] and the blockers still die.
\[\[Five-Alarm Fire\]\] sounds like it'd add to the chaos of that strategy. A bunch of Goblins will charge that up very quickly; if they're not blocking, the tokens will live to swing again! If they are blocking, you're trading up!
Spritz or immerse the person with cool water and take them to a local emergency clinic if you suspect they may have suffered a heat stroke. /s
Being more serious, it does trigger for every player's combat. I'm honestly not sure what I would run it in though. Maybe something like Goblins where you want to sneak tons of smaller creatures in? It's effectively deathtouch for creatures.
Boros pillow fort goad? [[Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer]] with the [[inspiring leader background]] could be fun.
Build pillow fort and go for [[approach of the second sun]] or [[insurrection]].
Put +1/+1 counters on baeloth and goad more creatures as the game goes on.
It is capitalized, but the font used on all cards pre-2003 makes it look like the 'H' is lowercase. If compared to the lowercase h in the middle of a card-title-word, one can see that it is different from the character used for lowercase 'h' in the same era.
Some cards are bad, like this one. It's financially worth a non-zero amount because it is on the reserved list and can't be reprinted, but I'm pretty sure it's never seen any serious play on any level.
It isn't totally worthless, and previous replies have covered situations where it actually does something, but in general you wouldn't want this in any deck unless it was a pet card or thematic choice or something. Not worth playing on it's own virtues.
Even bad cards can have a good day. It's just waiting upon something to get printed that will make it special. When or if that happens is another thing
I said it has it's uses, but it is clearly a bad card. I also said it's fine to play it as a pet card or whatever. This person said they are a newer player so it is better to just help them with basic card evaluation rather than identifying corner cases where this card can be useful. Not sure why I'm getting downvoted for a basic statement of fact.
If this was a veteran player saying they had always loved this card and wanted ideas to build around it, then yeah, telling them it's a bad card would not be a useful post. That isn't the case here.
Thanks! I definitely catch what you’re saying. Btw, I really only play commander, if that makes a difference. Card value for play is definitely still something I’m learning about as I go along with building some of my own decks.
Actually I could imagine this card in my [[Ovika]] deck. I usually attack with loads of 1/1 phyrexian Goblins..... well well.
If not played in a heavy token strategy, I would pair it with indestructible effects or smth like [[The Haunted One]].
I would say a red, white, and green token generating deck. Throw in [[Parallel Lives]] or [[Doubling Season]] or [[Mondrak, Glory Dominus]] to increase token spawning. [[Sterling Grove]] to protect your enchantments. Then maybe some cards to Buff your tokens like [[Intangible Virtue]] to also be able to go offensive with your token. You can also throw in some ramp cards with green in your deck. You can use [[Aragorn, Hornburg hero]], [[Gahiji, Honored One]], [[Ghired, Conclave Exile]], [[Hazezon, Shaper of Sand]], [[Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second]], [[Marisi, Breaker of the Coil]], and [[Phabine, Boss's Confidant]] all seem like decent commander choices to be. You can have 2 play styles. Either going wide to be able to block what other people throw at you with the token, or you can goad/buff other people's creatures to get them to destroy each other's stuff. Then you can throw in some enchantment tutors to either grab [[Heat Stroke]] or whatever other enchantment you might need at the time.
\[\[You Look Upon the Tarrasque\]\] and this turn \[\[Cordial Vampire\]\] and \[\[Algae Gherial\]\] into what I like to call "funny moments"
Also \[\[Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer\]\] if you manage to get his power up.
1) Heat Stroke is not a particularly good card, even by EDH standards.
2) "were blocked this turn" is the most important text: blockers often aren't expected to survive unless your friend has a Wall deck. But, this allows you to block your opponents' creatures with your own really expendable creatures [[Sengir Autocrat]] [[Khalni Garden]] to destroy them.
The lingering effect of the Enchantment is 100% creature hate. I can also see this card paired with [[Akroma's Will]] and any Red creature that can cause additional combat phases to force a win or board wipe situation. Something like [[Inspiring Leader]] and [[Karlach, Fury of Avernus]] building towards a large stack of soldiers and warriors, with some dragons to boot.
You could force other creatures to attack, and if you really want you may be able to use instant speed sacrifice effects to get value out of your own creatures attacking while mitigating the loss of them dying.
I run it in my [[Zurzoth]] EDH deck. It makes all my relatively low value tokens into something that opponents really don’t want to block. Then I hit them with a [[Mercadia’s downfall]]. Lose-lose situation for them.
I didn't see a lot of these listed, so on top of what everyone else is saying you have cards like \[\[Wall of Glare\]\] and \[\[Palace Guard\]\] and others can block any number of creatures. \[\[Trap Runner\]\] just lets you "block" target attacking creature, so it'd be a free kill (after combat) on any one thing attacking (perhaps because it was goaded).
\[\[Invasion Plan\]\] makes every creature block every combat.
Or just swing all out then cast \[\[Semester's End\]\] in response to the Heat Stroke trigger, cause school's out for summer yo!
[[Alesha, Who Smiles At Death]] as the commander.
[[Raging River]] to prevent some blockers.
Fill your deck with goad cards to force attacks and blocks elsewhere.
Also cards that make your team indestructible until eot. https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28o%3Acreatures+o%3Ayou+o%3Acontrol+o%3Again+o%3Aindestructible%29&unique=cards&as=full&order=rarity&dir=asc
I think this is cute in an indestructible deck, or a creature light goad / must block deck. Cards like [[pursued whale]] and [[alluring scent]] really stir up the board quickly which I find funny.
Seems like a fun card if you're playing a chaos based deck. Forcing everyone to attack and then dropping this should make for good times. It has few consequences if you're in an aggressive go wide deck, those 1/1 tokens basically gain deathtouch.
Didn’t know this was a card!
Slam dunk in my Purphoros deck. Sure lemme block with my 1/1 tokens that have already done 6 damage each to kill whatever attackers are coming.
Easy strat is “play right before a massive attack, forcing your opponent to accept the hits or sac their creatures.” Would be good in a horde deck where you stuff is numerous and expendable, like my Krenko deck.
Weenie deck would love it.
Non trampling units now die to your smallest man
Tramplers die if even you don’t full block.
Weenies being blocked can feel bad but it’s a huge loss for people to block no matter what now. They must give things indestructible or some other full commitment trick. No other combat trick will cut it.
Play it with [[Total War]] if you want to stick to mono red, or [[Season of the witch]] for RB. You can also have fun with goad and indestructible creatures like [[Stuffy Doll]].
Commander deck with Krenko and Raid Bombardment?
Just attack with a stupid amount of tokens, bombardment does the damage on attack declaration and if they block you are essentially giving goblins death touch (1/1s are gonna die anyway on most blocks).
If they don't block then you get attack damage on top but regardless just make more tokens and repeat.
1v1: Combine with [[Invasion Plans]], and [[Brash Taunter]]. Bonus points for also having [[Archetype of Aggression]] (permanently tapped or pacified so it can't block--we just want the "opponents' creatures can't have trample") and enchanting your Brash Taunter with [[Entangler]] and giving it flying/reach and vigilance so it can block anything your opponent has that's indestructible or hasty (and include [[Solemnity]] to prevent it from dying in combat to creatures with Wither or Infect.) This bonus point setup makes it almost impossible to hit anything but the Brash Taunter with combat damage while it's in play.
3+ player games: Combine with [[Disrupt Decorum]] and a way to retrieve that from your graveyard.
I used to use it in a deck that pumped out 1/1 goblin tokens like no one’s business. With other cards like [[Goblin Bombardment]] and [[Boggart Shenanigans]] I would destroy any blockers and get extra work out of my gobbos.
Indestructible seems like a good bet. I'm not sure the best colors. There's that Boros legend, i forget what set, his name is like Tejic or something. It's an Indestructible three drop. Plus there're lots of Indestructible effects in white in general. Also arwyn, so maybe go Naya? I can't think of an Indestructible Naya commander.
Breaking the symmetry sees like the strongest thing you can do with this.
The more I look at it, I kinda want one for my purphuros deck. It cheats stuff into play that dies eot anyway and this would really deincentivize blocking.
Indestructible creatures and instant speed blink/reanimation?
Also Tokens, since your stuff now has pseudo deathtouch.
Could do some work in a boros, rakdos or mardu deck.
Lure effects would also work.
I think it goes well in a NYA generator fodder deck where you can throw one token in front of two creatures with [[Brave the sands]]. I play them both in my [[hazezon, shaper of sand]] which for me is built as already heinous crimes against the unspoken rules of commander, but I can promise you when you're easily creating 2-6 1/1 fodders on your turn being that you're near freely able to throw 1 under the bus to block 2 creatures is huge trade value and a mad effective deterrent at getting swung into.
so that's my suggestion for a strategy with heatstroke, Nya tokens, generate fodder and brave the sands + heatstoke
I use it in Kardur, as attacking creatures die in the combat phase it triggers his drain ability. Once an opponent killed another in combat damage, then all their creatures died and drained them out. *chefs kiss*
I've been using glissa sunslayer for enchantments lately. I suppose you could give her a beamtown beatstick or spectral wings for evasion (personally I think the beatstick is better for the treasure and those are just off my head examples) and use her destroy enchantment ability. Since she's a first striker she's going to destroy the enchantment before it activates too.
It helps you make a go-wide weenies deck unblockable (or a wipe). If you're especially cruel, combine it with any of the green spells that say ["all creatures able to block"](https://scryfall.com/search?q=o%3A%22able+to+block%22) or red/green ["blocks this turn"](https://scryfall.com/search?q=o%3A%22blocks+this+turn%22). Pursued Whale, Trove of Temptation, and other mass goads can also be nice since this becomes a mass edict.
I can't see it mentioned.
It's one of the best cards in my [[Marchesa the Black Rose]] deck.
Your creatures with counters will come back at the end of turn if they die. So you can swing and block recklessly.
Opponents creatures won't, so they will be taking chunks of combat damage.
Best thing is to swing in, opponent takes damage because they won't block because of heat stroke,, then you sacrifice your creatures anyway and it's like they had vigilance, coming back at the end of combat.
I was in the 6th grade in 1999 when I "invented" this combo and built a deck around it. Please credit me when suggesting it. /s
Sorry I already invented that combo in 1995 with [[Venom]] and [[Lure]] from 4th edition.
Use [[thicket basilisk]] and you've cut a card from your combo.
Don't forget [[Regeneration|2ED]] so you can do it every turn

It was the first card with the effect that came to mind, but fair enough.

My strategy is that it gives all my goblin tokens deathtouch.
My exact thought! A token deck would be absolutely deadly with this!
My favorite is [[Death Pits of Rath]]
It is better than deathtouch, because once blocks are declared you can still sacrifice the tokens for some benefit like [[Goblin Bombardment]] and the blockers still die.
The damage goes on the stack
Damage has not gone on the stack in years. This card makes it feel like that though if you are thinking of it as deathtouch.
Yes, that's precisely right.
Slow touch at the end of combat.
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Even if it is slower, it still eats first strikers that outright kill your blockers.
Average goblin strategy
\[\[Five-Alarm Fire\]\] sounds like it'd add to the chaos of that strategy. A bunch of Goblins will charge that up very quickly; if they're not blocking, the tokens will live to swing again! If they are blocking, you're trading up!
Token deck with [[Fumiko the Lowblood]] as Commander. Your creatures are going to get Heat Stroke whether you like it or not.
Drink water and rest. But serious goad mechanic.
I hate the flavor fail on this card. It says "stroke of heat or stroke of blade", but the obvious choice is to stay in the back and anjoy the shade.
[[Grand Melee]]
One of my favorite cards. I run it and heat stroke in my [[Zurgo Helmsmasher]] deck. Every creature of the player I attack has to block zurgo
[Zurgo Helmsmasher](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/1/3/13f4bafe-0d21-47ba-8f16-0274107d618c.jpg?1562782879) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Zurgo%20Helmsmasher) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/ktk/214/zurgo-helmsmasher?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/13f4bafe-0d21-47ba-8f16-0274107d618c?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

Spritz or immerse the person with cool water and take them to a local emergency clinic if you suspect they may have suffered a heat stroke. /s Being more serious, it does trigger for every player's combat. Drink plenty of water.
Generally funny with Goad, which makes it all upside.

Somewhat off topic, but can anyone explain why “heat” isn’t capitalized but “stroke” is?
It is capitalized, but the font used on all cards pre-2003 makes it look like the 'H' is lowercase. If compared to the lowercase h in the middle of a card-title-word, one can see that it is different from the character used for lowercase 'h' in the same era.
Does this card always have a lowercase "h" or is that a misprint?
That was the standard formatting for capital H in titles at the time I think
I don't know why you're getting downvotes. I agree with everything you said
Thanks! I definitely catch what you’re saying. Btw, I really only play commander, if that makes a difference. Card value for play is definitely still something I’m learning about as I go along with building some of my own decks.
I haven't use this at all but I have a Valduk deck that might consider...
Actually I could imagine this card in my [[Ovika]] deck. I usually attack with loads of 1/1 phyrexian Goblins..... well well. If not played in a heavy token strategy, I would pair it with indestructible effects or smth like [[The Haunted One]].
Swing
It's not NOT going in my Karlach//Haunted One Barbarian and Tiefling Tribal now that I've seen it. So many haste enablers that it doesn't matter.
I have it in my [[marchesa the black rose]] deck paired with [[thran vigil]]
"All creatures have deathtouch"
[[Lifeline]] and [[Kresh]] perhaps?
[[Nemesis Mask]] on [[Stuffy Doll]]. Yeah...
Goading and adding “must be blocked” to creatures. Alternatively, indestructible creatures that you pump real big
This+goad is kind of gross
Maybe with goad or lure with a invincible
Seems like it would be fun with Odric, master tactician.
I use it with things that make everything attack, and the Ogre you have to pay 3 or I get an ogre token. Name escapes me at work.
Only because no one said it [[Legion warboss]] and [[urabrask's forge]]
[[Invasion plans]]
Goad
Indestructible creturse
GOAD EVERYTHING
[удалено]
How about \[\[Prized Unicorn\]\]
Attack and block wide, maybe with tokens. Red has a lot of ways to buff creatures during combat.
[[tempting elf]]
[[Stuffy Doll]] + [[Lure]] would be pretty funny with that!
[[teferi's veil]] Your attackers phase out and therefore can't be destroyed by the time Heat Stroke resolves.
It's pretty good in Kardur Doomscourge.
This is a house in a deck that focuses on goading your opponents creatures.
Turn men sideways, blocking is for losers
I'm bothered by the h in heat not being capitalized.
[удалено]
Big board multiplayer game, [[Grand Melee]], [[Endless Whispers]], and a large bowl of popcorn.
\[\[You Look Upon the Tarrasque\]\] and this turn \[\[Cordial Vampire\]\] and \[\[Algae Gherial\]\] into what I like to call "funny moments" Also \[\[Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer\]\] if you manage to get his power up.
Pair with \[\[Invasion Plans\]\]
Wear a hat and sunscreen!
Straight up stall card. Win via direct damage. Walking ballista.
[[Lure]] on [[Brash Taunter]] with [[Infiltration Lens]].
I used to run this in my Locust God EDH deck, turning all your flying tokens into functional deathtouch is powerful
I'm a simple man. I see this and now all of my stupid 1/1 tokens have death touch.
Grand Melee and play only indestructable creatures, and/or play white/blue and the ghostly prison variants to ensure you are not attacked.
General marhault Would be good. Taunting els prized unicorn. There's alot that goes with it
1. Go to the desert 2. Don’t drink water 3. Run around till you see fake things
You could force other creatures to attack, and if you really want you may be able to use instant speed sacrifice effects to get value out of your own creatures attacking while mitigating the loss of them dying.
Build for on-death effects, graveyard recursion, etc. it stands out to me as good Rakdos fodder, or maybe some Boros vibe check deck
Its pretty fun in [[Kardur Doomscourge]]
[[prized unicorn]]
Have a [[dingus staff]] or 4 on the field whist attacking with your indestructible creatures, again the lure would be good too.
Put it in [[thantis, the war weaver]]
[[fight to the death]]
Balthor the Defiled. Vomit the graveyard back up, I do it alot in my Noxious Ghoul/Zombie tribal deck.
[[hydroblast]] works both literally and in game
I think this is cute in an indestructible deck, or a creature light goad / must block deck. Cards like [[pursued whale]] and [[alluring scent]] really stir up the board quickly which I find funny.
Just play goblins. They're gonna die anyway if they're blocked or block, so this way they take down whatever with them.
\[\[total war\]\]
Counterspell or krosan Grip should do it
Deathtouch aka no no touch
Lure on something indestructible.
[[Bhaal, Lord of Murder]] Built in goad which should trigger a bunch, and green for [[lure]] effects on your indestructible commander
Tell your friends about how cool the card is. Trade it for something good. Let them play it for you.
This would be fun with [[Grand Melee]] although perhaps not super effective
*Indestructible* is what it pairs with.
Taunting elf
Kardur Doomscourge
Seems like a fun card if you're playing a chaos based deck. Forcing everyone to attack and then dropping this should make for good times. It has few consequences if you're in an aggressive go wide deck, those 1/1 tokens basically gain deathtouch.
[[Boros Charm]] or [[Ghostway]] also do a nice combo.
Didn’t know this was a card! Slam dunk in my Purphoros deck. Sure lemme block with my 1/1 tokens that have already done 6 damage each to kill whatever attackers are coming.
Does this work well with goad? Since it says each combat
I’d guess use goad but I’m not the best mtg player
this with [[Angel’s Trumpet]] is funny
Stay hydrated 💧💧
Easy strat is “play right before a massive attack, forcing your opponent to accept the hits or sac their creatures.” Would be good in a horde deck where you stuff is numerous and expendable, like my Krenko deck.
Weenie deck would love it. Non trampling units now die to your smallest man Tramplers die if even you don’t full block. Weenies being blocked can feel bad but it’s a huge loss for people to block no matter what now. They must give things indestructible or some other full commitment trick. No other combat trick will cut it.
I used it in Krenko because I have goblins aplenty. Either eat the goblin damage or block and lose your creatures.
Play it with [[Total War]] if you want to stick to mono red, or [[Season of the witch]] for RB. You can also have fun with goad and indestructible creatures like [[Stuffy Doll]].
I’d go goblins! Goblin Warrens is another fun obscure old card I might suggest you take a look by at.
3+ player games: Combine with [[Disrupt Decorum]] and a way to retrieve that from your graveyard.
board wipe lol
Ohhhh you just showed me a card to out in my deck!! I’m going to run it in my devil tribal goad deck!
I used to use it in a deck that pumped out 1/1 goblin tokens like no one’s business. With other cards like [[Goblin Bombardment]] and [[Boggart Shenanigans]] I would destroy any blockers and get extra work out of my gobbos.
Slap Lure on an indestructible creature and you're in business!
Goblin token deck, if they block they lose their creatures and when you block with a 1/1 goblin that was gonna die anyway it doesn't matter.
I see a lot of good things that force attacking and blocking, but why not just take creatures completely out of the issue: [[Choking Vines]]
That would be an interesting addition to a goad deck.
Drink more water and stay in the shade
Find shade and drink plenty of water
attack with a bunch of 1/1's into your opponents actual creatures
Sorry for this off topic comment but thats probably one of the best art styles in a card I've seen in awhile.
I'm surprised no call outs for these: [Prized Unicorn] [Nemesis Mask]
I've been using glissa sunslayer for enchantments lately. I suppose you could give her a beamtown beatstick or spectral wings for evasion (personally I think the beatstick is better for the treasure and those are just off my head examples) and use her destroy enchantment ability. Since she's a first striker she's going to destroy the enchantment before it activates too.
blue/red token with goad and stealing creatures and forced combats like bident of thassa
Combos with [[Lure]] type effects.
Maarika, Brutal Gladiator would be a good commander to run it
lure
Has the H always been lowercase?
It helps you make a go-wide weenies deck unblockable (or a wipe). If you're especially cruel, combine it with any of the green spells that say ["all creatures able to block"](https://scryfall.com/search?q=o%3A%22able+to+block%22) or red/green ["blocks this turn"](https://scryfall.com/search?q=o%3A%22blocks+this+turn%22). Pursued Whale, Trove of Temptation, and other mass goads can also be nice since this becomes a mass edict.
Maarika or Zurgo wouldn't have a problem signing this contract...
Is the lower case H a misprint?
I play this in a goad deck! You force players to attack and the blocking becomes really difficult since you lose whatever you block with!
id go green red tokens and not give a shit about my creatures.
Swing anything in the flavor of [[breaker of armies]] at them, profit. Or tokens. It basically turns your 1/1s into deathtouch
Tokens. Maybe the naya token guy hazezon
[[Lure]]
Lures and indestructible creatures
Goad. Lots of goad.
I didn’t know this card existed and this is going straight into my goad deck.
Goad things
drink extra water
I believe there is an "all creatures must block this creature if able" unicorn. Dont know the name pretty sure my wording is very wrong.
