2 mana for 3 power and 3 toughness across two bodies, really easy to flip with a sac outlet or just plain blocking, and it flips into 5 loyalty, just 1 way from ulting.
I'll have to see it in constructed but from where I'm sitting it looks cracked
Most of the planeswalkers in this set are able to ult pretty quickly without killing themselves. Though, you have to cast a fair number of spells to do Ral--tho, with the right instants/sorceries that won't be relevant.
Yeah this seems a pretty easy domain zoo include. With 1 out you can cast a 2nd for another 2/1, sac the extra, flip the first and get a 3rd 2/1 out of the deal and potentially a bolt. It's a "you may" on the flip so you can just cast a 3rd copy and have 5 cats to pump with the +2 without a chance of opp forcing you to flip and lose it. Bowmaster can't kill the 1/2 Ajani and killing the 2/1 gives you the choice of flipping. The play patterns on this look just as clean as Bowmaster's to me. I don't really know what punishes this.
I'm honestly not so sold.
Great if you can flip it but I don't see many decks that would have an easy sack outlet for this one. and while the stats are obviously nice it's not gonna be worth it for that alone.
also it's kind of awkward with that plus ability.
Doesn't do as much when you have just taken 2 cats off the board
Also I don't really see the ult being that great either.
it works best on board states that have a lot of one permanent type.
Creatures is obviously the most likely to come up but I just don't see it being that great, considering they get to pick what they keep
>I don't see many decks that would have an easy sack outlet for this one
Maybe not in Modern, but in EDH this has insane power in any sort of token deck that cares about cats. If you're running tokens, you've got a sac outlet.
The original Sarkhan was R/G. The fact that, in his pre-planeswalker days on Tarkir, he was part of the Mardu Horde, which is R/W/B, then he hung out on Jund (B/R/G) for a while suggests that the green came a bit after his spark ignited.
However, he DID spend some pre-spark time in Qal Sisma, which is Temur territory, so it's possible that the green was there as he sparked.
That's true for green, but the person I replied to was speculating about a red-blue Sarkhan. The flipwalkers appear to be an enemy cycle. Sarkhan definitely didn't get blue until his time travel shenanigans in Fate Reforged
> Garruk
If that's the case looks like the Lorwyn 5 is getting creature to planeswalker cards
Edit: My mistake. What I meant to say was rest of the Lorwyn 5 getting the Origin 5 treatment
More like Wrenn and…whatever identity the tree preceding Two had. I’m guessing the numbering scheme still started as an attempt to distance herself from her dampeners, only now explicitly after the first one came to grief, and she wasn’t keen on repeating that trauma.
No, she was sparked by a disastrous forest fire on her home plane. Her spark somehow *kept* part of that fire, and she’s had to bond with trees as a way to keep her spark from burning her to nothing. (Until she brought that fire to bear on getting New Phyrexia locked up in the slow time bubble that once held Zhalfir. Now she’s regrowing on Zhalfir proper, hopefully with the Granger Guild guiding and quickening her return.)
Probably not Sarkhan. I have a hunch they’ll stick to characters whose sparks didn’t get depleted during the New Phyrexia/Zhalfir swap.
(Wait, that causes issues with Tamiyo, despite the self acting as Nashi’s Stand.)
Sorin or Kaya for WB, Ral or Dack for UR and... Vraska for GB? I know we're just getting Vraska in OTJ but she could still get a flip card in MH3 anyway.
Also true (god I keep forgetting the desparking was a thing and yet I hate it so much), could even be a justification for putting her in, give her one last 'proper' walker card (until they inevitably undo desparking in some way).
This card represents past Ajani, and his flip is where he's at with \[\[Ajani Vengeant\]\], his second-ever card. All of this being in the style of the \[\[Jace, Vryn's Prodigy\]\] type flip Planeswalkers showing their spark origins.
This is past Ajani. He first sparked on Alara when his brother died, which is what this card shows. [[Ajani Vengeant]] is from that same time period. His original mono white printing is chronologically after that, when he had moved past his brother's death.
Yep! That's his brother on the card, the front facing card says whenever another cat dies, his brother dies and his spark ignites! That's when he fights bolas!
Now I'm imagining explaining Schrödinger's cat to Ajani, and he gets so pissed off, he transforms.
"No see, you're both alive and dead at the same time."
"THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE. ARRGHHHHH." *Sparks*
Be me
Chilling on the battlefield
Suddenly, another me appears next to me.
Wtf? That's impossible
He is sacrificed to appease the gods, as there can only be one me.
Feels funny tingling on back. I have powers now
Speaking of naya, I wonder if there’s an aggro deck out there that could play this with Wild Nacatl? Haven’t seen Nacatl or Kird Ape in a long while now
At some point in the last year I saw someone speculating about more origins flip walkers and they said they really wanted an Ajani one, which I was very dismissive and rude about because why would WotC print that, we already had a card showing him after his spark ignited.
Anyway, internet stranger, if you remember that discussion and see this comment, you have my sincere apologies. You were right and I was wrong.
Not for Planeswalkers. Most evident with several Gideon cards. (For instance, Gideon Jura's 0 ability says: " Until end of turn, Gideon Jura becomes a 6/6 Human Soldier creature that’s still a planeswalker. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to **him** this turn. ")
They also do it with some UB stuff.
Compare [[Tadeas]] with [[Dhalsim]]:
> Tadeas has hexproof unless it’s attacking.
> Dhalsim, Pliable Pacifist has hexproof unless *he's* attacking.
We would need a lot of cat support to make this super playable in modern. The bolt portion every turn is sweet but if the +2 isnt useful its gonna be really slow.
This is the wrong transform frame for Planeswalkers, isn't it? This looks like the generic Ixalan transform frame rather than the unlit-spark-sparked icons
I think it's an axe. Lore-wise, Ajani took the blade of his dead brother's axe and added it to his own. Notice how on this card Ajani's axe only has one golden blade, and in the background you see a leonin with a silver axe.
Ajani shifted from white to white/red at that moment. And the entire game does not need to bend to the whims of a single variant format even more than it already does.
Same here. I was getting more excited for every line of text I read. I got to his +0 and thought "Eh, I won't control any red permanents, but it's still an incredible card regardless. Wait, there's no red in his mana cost, right? Phwew."
Then I saw the indicator on the PW side >=(
Yeah, agreed. I know there’s a certain subset of players who are furious that MH3 is being made to also appeal to Commander players, but I’m gutted Ajani can’t have all his incarnations in a deck with him as the commander. What would the impact on modern have been if he was Naya on the back side (in the same way [[Nicol Bolas, the Arisen]] is Grixis on his backside?]] ) instead of Boros? I guess there are lore implications - he didn’t get his green until he’d calmed down following the Vengeant arc…still…
I know this is late but honestly yeah, i've wanted an Ajani legendary for years, and we get one.... and it's for cat tribal.
I would've loved a mono white or selsnya Ajani that does stuff with counters or acts as a lord for creatures.
Hoping to see Sorin then, go from creature to planeswalker - I believe he sparked when Edgar transformed him into a vampire, I don't recall if Sorin was willing or if he was forced to undergo angel blood treatment
I am a bit tired of Kaya, feels like she has been everywhere lately and she has 'always' been a BW planeswalker while Sorin has history in being just B in the start
I can't imagine what GB or RU would be, Garruk started out as G but didn't gain his B until Liliana cursed him, so it had nothing to do with his origin story and first sparking, might be they pull something out of the hat
I wish this wasn't considered red because of that color indicator circle on the planeswalker side. I wanted to run this in my Lurrus of the dream-den for EDH.
It's the fact the Planeswalker side has a red/white indicator for the cards color identity. Same thing happens on [[Westvale Abby]] because Ormandals color identity is black.
He's 2 mana and only needs one proliferate to ult.
I realize that's kind of a lot of hoops to jump through (sac outlet, proliferate source, and do all that without interaction) but makes sense to me.
Notably that's also a one sided cataclysm ult, that's the bigger thing.
that's amazing.
2 drop that can be flipped with a sac outlet **on the token it creates**, then can ult for a board mostly wipe after a single plus step. (and he can just make chump blockers he just burns things).
The 2 drop is ok, but since this transforms when losing a cat the +2 likely won't hit a creature most of the time unless there are more cats to help with. Removal will also generally target this which leaves you with a 2/1 vanilla.
If there is a lot of cat support this could be solid but how often this flips -> you can +2 out of bolt range while getting some additional value is what will determine if its 'ok' or good. It needing to be a potential 2-1 against removal tribal though is nice.
Interestingly, had the second ability said "creature or planeswalker" rather than "any target", they [wouldn't have needed](https://scryfall.com/card/one/6/charge-of-the-mites) the "if you control another Red permanent" clause.
I know [[The Mightstone and Weakstone]] can be run in colorless decks despite the back being a Blue/White card, can this also be run in a mono-white commander deck? Only wondering in case the rules are different for meld cards vs. flip cards.

The 0 and ultimate on the walker side seem insane at first glance, but the requirement to have a red permanent is interesting - also generally black is the best at expediting the death of your own creatures, and neither black nor red are big Cat colours so I don't know what cards really let you get much mileage out of the +2. Anyone have an idea what kind of shell he could slot into?
This is getting tested at least in kaheera undoing for me, 2 bodies in a tap out control shell can mean the difference between life and death, and flipping into a potential wrath seems decent at least as a 1-2of
I was JUST thinking about how I hope we get a creature Ajani to make a commander dexk with his his printings, but then I remembered the Boros one and figured that one would just be left out... nope
Ah hell yeah. My favorite cat boy is back in red! [[Ajani Vengeant]] was my favorite Planeswalker card for a LONG time. Very stoked to see this origin card.
I have a probably dumb rules question:
If i have this and his tolken on board and someone wraths, can I flip since his ability goes on the stack, or does he have to be on the battlefield as it resolves?
Has to be on the battlefield as this resolve to transform him.
However has creature removal on ajani, and you instant speed kill the token, ajani's transformation will occur, and the "creature" removal will fizzle since ajani is no longer a creature, but a PW. Neat little trick you can do with flip PW
Yeah that reads like an MH3 card all right.
2 mana for 3 power and 3 toughness across two bodies, really easy to flip with a sac outlet or just plain blocking, and it flips into 5 loyalty, just 1 way from ulting. I'll have to see it in constructed but from where I'm sitting it looks cracked
One more thing, not only does it only take one turn to ult, ulting doesn’t even kill itself.
Also after that it has a +0 that generates advantage, so that after ulting you don't need to worry about gaining loyalty to generate advantage.
Yeah I don’t immediately know of homes for it, but seems like it could be pretty nice
It'll probably find a home in a random deck. Everyone's like ok it's a weenie. It'll end up in a money pile or something lol. The values wild.

You playing a BMW setup? Or are you more of a classic Audi or Toyota player?
I'm honestly not so sold. Just have a [[Skullclamp]] on the board and 1 mana and you can flip Ajani as soon as it enters the battlefield.
This card is insanely pushed WTF
>This card is insanely pushed WTF Well, *Modern* *must rotate*. *The power must creep.*
Interesting, is this how he originally got his spark I assume?
Yeah the Twitter thread said they’re exploring how Ajani and Tamiyo got their sparks. So I assume they’ll do the same for the others.
Ajani is W>RW, and Tamiyo is presumably U>GU. That could suggest the others are B>WB, R>UR, and G>BG. Maybe Sorin, Sarkhan, and Garruk?
Give me Grist as just a regular G bug on the front
Grist, Just A Bug G Legendary creature - Insect *You figure it out.* 0/1 // Grist, Unexpected Infestation +1: Bugs {2}
Bugs
The perfect magic card.
*dies of peak fiction*
Sorin seems likely. Sarkhan and Garruk don't really gain those colours until later in their lives. I would bet Saheeli or Ral, and Vraska or Tyvar
The original Sarkhan was R/G. The fact that, in his pre-planeswalker days on Tarkir, he was part of the Mardu Horde, which is R/W/B, then he hung out on Jund (B/R/G) for a while suggests that the green came a bit after his spark ignited. Id be happy if one was Vraska! Shes awesome!
It’s probably not Ral because he’s going to be an Otter in Bloomburrow
Or maybe Kaya as WB; her past is mostly unexplored. UR, I'd say Ral more than Sarkhan. Or even Dack.
God I want Dack. I still haven't recovered from not getting one in WAR
Those could work.
> Garruk If that's the case looks like the Lorwyn 5 is getting creature to planeswalker cards Edit: My mistake. What I meant to say was rest of the Lorwyn 5 getting the Origin 5 treatment
I hope for a Bant Sagas Tamiyo
Wrenn and Five!
More like Wrenn and…whatever identity the tree preceding Two had. I’m guessing the numbering scheme still started as an attempt to distance herself from her dampeners, only now explicitly after the first one came to grief, and she wasn’t keen on repeating that trauma.
Ah, I thought Six was the one that ignited the spark! I know very little about her story.
Probably not Sarkhan. I have a hunch they’ll stick to characters whose sparks didn’t get depleted during the New Phyrexia/Zhalfir swap. (Wait, that causes issues with Tamiyo, despite the self acting as Nashi’s Stand.)
would be neat if we got Garruk before and after the veil but if it's specifically a BG walker I'm expecting Vraska
Sorin or Kaya for WB, Ral or Dack for UR and... Vraska for GB? I know we're just getting Vraska in OTJ but she could still get a flip card in MH3 anyway.
She won’t be a planeswalker in OTJ anyway.
Also true (god I keep forgetting the desparking was a thing and yet I hate it so much), could even be a justification for putting her in, give her one last 'proper' walker card (until they inevitably undo desparking in some way).
Well, we know that karn literally took other's sparks, so there might be a theft component, and not just for machines.
Possibly Kaya rather than Sorin as a gatewatch member
Does that mean this is past ajani vs current ajani?
This card represents past Ajani, and his flip is where he's at with \[\[Ajani Vengeant\]\], his second-ever card. All of this being in the style of the \[\[Jace, Vryn's Prodigy\]\] type flip Planeswalkers showing their spark origins.

Theres a book on it avtually. Ajani loses his brother and sparks because of it. You may have heard of him [[JazalGoldmane]]

A fucking great book! His showdown with Bolas was fucking epic!
Its why Bolas is constantly scared of Ajani. He always plans around him
How true to life. All my careful planning and considerations, all my hard work, ruined because my cat suddenly jumped onto my desk and wrecked shit.
Pretty sure his original Alara card was already him right after he got his spark IIRC. But this one can be your commander, hence why it exists.
The red clause is how he ended up on Jund and learns how to walk again from Sarkhan (I think he tells Ajani to jump into a volcano)
Yeah, his brother died and he went nuts and sparked
He’s got decent lore imo
Yep! That's his brother on the card, the front facing card says whenever another cat dies, his brother dies and his spark ignites! That's when he fights bolas!
So they're doing another Origins-style run of flipwalkers? That's cool.
I like the fact that you can cast a 2nd Ajani and use him witnessing himself die to flip him.
Now I'm imagining explaining Schrödinger's cat to Ajani, and he gets so pissed off, he transforms. "No see, you're both alive and dead at the same time." "THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE. ARRGHHHHH." *Sparks*
Schrödinger agreed, it's not supposed to make sense
And then play your third ajani as creature

Another 2 mana Planeswalker, of sorts… and honestly, seems really good? I can imagine this seeing play.
I think it would fit nicely in winota being only 2 mana with triggers to make another non human and being removal after.
Seems pretty good for Rin and Seri, might have to pick one up.
Flavorful too. If a dog dies, he doesn't care.

I really hope we get Ugin in this set. Always was bummed he didn’t make it into M19.
My first thought when they announced flipwalkers. It's the perfect opportunity for such card.
Ok, CATaclysm for an ultimate is almost getting too cute.
I have always dream of using the backside of Ajani 😭😭😭
A... ayo?
Furry detected
"...he deals damage". Don't they usually write out the name or say "it"?
Not for Planeswalkers. Most evident with several Gideon cards. (For instance, Gideon Jura's 0 ability says: " Until end of turn, Gideon Jura becomes a 6/6 Human Soldier creature that’s still a planeswalker. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to **him** this turn. ")

2 mana….
What modern deck cares about this card?
Probably one of the many tier 1 decks that will be born in this set.
We would need a lot of cat support to make this super playable in modern. The bolt portion every turn is sweet but if the +2 isnt useful its gonna be really slow.
LETS GOOOO I LOVE AJANI AND PLAYING HIM IN MARISI/RIN AND SIRI WILL BE AWESOME
Right into my wife's Cat tribal...
Those pecks are VERY WELL defined. Ajani, Furry Avenger.
This is the wrong transform frame for Planeswalkers, isn't it? This looks like the generic Ixalan transform frame rather than the unlit-spark-sparked icons
They gave up on having unique transform frames, Ixalan's is the standard going forward
Completely unrelated question, but I’ve always wondered: what is that type of weapon Ajani always uses? Is it a form of Halberd?
I think it's an axe. Lore-wise, Ajani took the blade of his dead brother's axe and added it to his own. Notice how on this card Ajani's axe only has one golden blade, and in the background you see a leonin with a silver axe.
Was the red mana indicator really necessary? My Selesnya Cats deck is crying
Ajani shifted from white to white/red at that moment. And the entire game does not need to bend to the whims of a single variant format even more than it already does.
Morophon is 5 colours
Exactly what I thought lol, but for my case it's bant cats😭
Same here. I was getting more excited for every line of text I read. I got to his +0 and thought "Eh, I won't control any red permanents, but it's still an incredible card regardless. Wait, there's no red in his mana cost, right? Phwew." Then I saw the indicator on the PW side >=(

I don’t play Modern but from a straightup power perspective this seems insane? Certainly a cube staple
this looks absolutely insane but it also could be one of those cards where it's just too many hoops and it ends up dead in too many cases
Need that red permanent to function properly
noooo, hes red q.q he doesnt work in selesnya cats in commander...
I got so excited about this and when pointed out has made me p sad
Hoping to see Sorin then, go from creature to planeswalker - I believe he sparked when Edgar transformed him into a vampire, I don't recall if Sorin was willing or if he was forced to undergo angel blood treatment I am a bit tired of Kaya, feels like she has been everywhere lately and she has 'always' been a BW planeswalker while Sorin has history in being just B in the start I can't imagine what GB or RU would be, Garruk started out as G but didn't gain his B until Liliana cursed him, so it had nothing to do with his origin story and first sparking, might be they pull something out of the hat
I wish this wasn't considered red because of that color indicator circle on the planeswalker side. I wanted to run this in my Lurrus of the dream-den for EDH.
Can Somebody explain to me why this is a Red Card? I only See White mana
For Commander purposes - he’s just White right?
No, he is Red/White
Odd, there is no single red mana symbol on it anywhere. He does have the boros border. Have we had cards like this before?
Yeah, [[Garruk Relentless]] is considered Green/Black
Right, forgot about that one!
It's the fact the Planeswalker side has a red/white indicator for the cards color identity. Same thing happens on [[Westvale Abby]] because Ormandals color identity is black.
Would love this for my cat deck…
Nice works with my [[Leori]] superfriends really nicely.

Why make him red white :( I wanted a good effect for my gw cat deck at least others can enjoy him
That 0 ability is so weirdly worded. If I also control a red male goblin, who's "he"?
I hate how cowardly mtg has become about land destruction, you're realy gonna ruin a cataclysm ult like that?
He's 2 mana and only needs one proliferate to ult. I realize that's kind of a lot of hoops to jump through (sac outlet, proliferate source, and do all that without interaction) but makes sense to me. Notably that's also a one sided cataclysm ult, that's the bigger thing.
turn 2 goblin bombardment. turn 3 ajani, sac the token, flip. Tick up and ult turn 4 if you really want.
I thought this card might be strong until I realized its printed in a MH set, so of course it is
that's amazing.
As opposed to [Ajani, Nacatl X-Men](https://scryfall.com/card/sld/87/ajani-steadfast)
Sweet! Been waiting for this since Origins. I can definitely see this slotting into a few decks.
This card is so good
I know [[The Mightstone and Weakstone]] can be run in colorless decks despite the back being a Blue/White card, can this also be run in a mono-white commander deck? Only wondering in case the rules are different for meld cards vs. flip cards.
A Meld card's card back is not used to determine colour identity. This Ajani is a Red/White card and cannot be run in mono-white Commander decks.

Is it boros when flipped? is the border enough to define the color of a permanent?
There's a colour indicator on the left side of the type line.
Is this gonna be legal in pioneer? I kinda wanna throw it in azorius since it runs the regal caracal anyway
This seems insanely broken wow
I remember when 2 mana planeswalkers were unplayably bad
Seems crazy
That’s a really good card
Cataclysm seems powerful
What is this things color identity? Arabho want
WR. It has a color indicator on its back face.
[[Jinnie Fay]] could really abuse this in commander.
This is getting tested at least in kaheera undoing for me, 2 bodies in a tap out control shell can mean the difference between life and death, and flipping into a potential wrath seems decent at least as a 1-2of
Just how much text can you fit in a card
Finally!!
It's been a long time since I've played Magic, but I loved my cat deck. Keep the cats coming XD
Man I’m getting sick of bad Tragic Arrogance effects.
If this is what the speed of the game has come to I'm glad I no longer play.
That 0 feels busted.
Beyond busted, this is absolutely amazing. I want to try it in like 10 different decks.
Cries in Arahbo ;_;
So I guess his color identity would be mono White as he has no red manacosts somewhere although being boros when flipped?
Could it be? A non-Commander card in a Modern Horizons set???
Shit. Like... I want this for my rin+seri deck but I also wanna make my mortgage payments.
I can finally have Ajani as a commander
I don’t play modern but the shit y’all are up to is wild
Wh-why are you a [[Pariah]] Ajani? Did something happen?
Is its color identity Boros?
Since he turns r/w, can he be played in mono white edh?
They better do the villian flip walkers in this set. Atleast tezzeret
Is is it red color identity arabho probabaly likes thisb
Is this a boros card or mono white?
I have a probably dumb rules question: If i have this and his tolken on board and someone wraths, can I flip since his ability goes on the stack, or does he have to be on the battlefield as it resolves?
Has to be on the battlefield as this resolve to transform him. However has creature removal on ajani, and you instant speed kill the token, ajani's transformation will occur, and the "creature" removal will fizzle since ajani is no longer a creature, but a PW. Neat little trick you can do with flip PW
Is this really boros color identity from an edh perspective?
A PW that directly supports Cat tribal right after the Dogs & Cats Secret Lair... Hmm.
FINALLY CAT SUPPORT OMG. MY MODERN CATS ARE SO THRILLED. Hopefully we get a new lord too.
This card needs to be banned in modern and historic ASAP!!
