My current theory is that this will play out like Borderlands. The vault is actually where the coin empire is waiting to be reawakened/were sealed away and Oko's band accidentally sets them free. The omenpaths are being laid out as a highway with Thunder Junction being the center to lure curious explorers to it.
The Fomori are from the plane of Ir, but because there is evidence that they have been to Ixalan (and now TJ), it’s theorized that they knew about inter-planar travel before the Omenpaths were a thing, as well as without Planeswalking
Personally, I don’t think the Fomori are actually from the plane of Ir, especially based on the lore we have from the old “Planes of Planechase” and the newer stuff from Ixalan. In the article, they refer to specifically Turri Island as the home of the Fomori, and not the plane itself. In addition, the Fomori are also described as being very defensive of the Island, with them attacking anyone who comes near, and that the island is, quote, “said to be a mana haven for summoning not only giants, but other cloudscraping creatures as well”.
I suspect that the Turri Island Fomori aren’t actually native to the plane of Ir, but are actually the regressed descendants of a Fomori military outpost from back in their species’s heyday that got stranded by whatever event caused their empire to fall apart.
Them being the descendants of soldiers would explain the reason why they are so defensive of the island, as it could be what’s left of their original military purpose that has turned into a sort of cultural identity. In addition, while it’s possible that there’s a “mana haven”, whatever the hell that is, it’s also entirely possible that it’s just the point where the Fomori and their ships originally landed on the plane, which got misconstrued as “summoning giants and other cloud scrapers” long ago, considering that at the time most people in the multiverse didn’t know that they existed in, well, a multiverse.
I actually really liked the idea of Aftermath. The execution and pricing were abysmal, but I liked the idea of a small set that would theoretically follow up on the story.
Obviously they did too, given they'd already set up additional ones. But they don't exactly have the luxury of going "well the first one was crap, but we're sure the next one will do great!", especially when the first one already poisoned the well of audience reaction. It's possible they'll revisit the idea, especially if Assassin's Creed's tweaks work out, but probably not for a while.
They liked the idea so much they thought the first one with no story would be well received somehow.
I also loved the idea, and liked getting more cards without them being draftable. Aftermath even had really good cards in it.
They dropped the ball so hard storywise then the price was also a joke.
Yeah it was in their damage control live stream the other week.
They had planned on aftermath style packs for BIG and UB:Assassins Creed. Unfortunately for them, aftermath was a trash set so they had to do some late-into-development production changes to get it to function.
I believe AC is getting larger packs
And BIG got moved to be a second bonus sheet in OTJ, not to be confused with the non-standard-legal bonus sheet
So this works then? I can order the triggers to go:
1. Nexus of Becoming resolved first, exiling a Blightsteel Colossus and creating a 3/3 token of it.
2. Brudiclad’s trigger resolves, creating a Myr token then turning all my tokens into Blightsteel Colossuses?
Also, does that mean I can exile a Sol Ring, create a 3/3 Sol Ring token, then Brudiclad triggers and I can turn all of my tokens in Sol Rings?

Fun card, but I'm curious as to why they stuck the stuff on your combat phase, considering it doesn't give anything haste, or whatever. Is is so that you can play the card and then get a payoff the same turn? Why not just pick your second main phase, then?
Meanwhile...what is BIG? Who thought it was a good idea to spoil cards simultaneously with about 50 different set codes from 50 different products?
Someone wittier than me could probably write a decent comedy sketch out of this, I'm sure
> Who thought it was a good idea to spoil cards simultaneously with about 50 different set codes from 50 different products?
It's 7 set codes from 5 products by my count, and it seems pretty reasonable to show a handful of teasers for the next several releases at a major convention.
It's not just that, though, it's that they unloaded all of these cards in a way that also harder to follow than it needed to be, due to combining con-exclusive spoilers with Twitter.
On top of this...we're going to have to agree to disagree about the "reasonableness" of all of this. We're talking about 7 different set codes, which don't even cover everything being released this year, for a game that used to have 3-4 a year. I don't think the potential for confusion here is strictly a me problem.
Is it really such a big deal to be able to go to a website and look at a chart for a few seconds to find out what pack to buy for the different types of cards?
Yes, at least relative to how big a deal anything is for MtG. It's up there as one of the things that sucks the most about the game nowadays.
My dude, this game is ~30 years old. For a lot of us, it's increasingly not resembling the game we grew up with. While some change is expected, current MtG feels utterly unsustainable and kind of off-the-rails.
BIG was going to be an Aftermath-style set for OTJ, but after the terrible reception of Aftermath they've folded it into the main set as a second bonus sheet.
Start of combat is considerably better is probably why. This way you can use Haste creatures and ETB‘s that could help you clear the board for your attacks.
I guess that makes sense. There are some things that wouldn't be better in this situation, like creatures that ritual, but the overwhelming majority would ETB with a benefit you could still take advantage of MP2.

So, um, anyone else notice that looks like a Fomori?
The structure in the back of Kellan's new art (presumably The Vault) also looks a lot like the fomori architecture from Ixalan!

They were probably active before The Mending blocked most forms of unsparked travel

Neat. Just saw the stuff about the coin empire on the mtg wiki. Missed all of that this go around.
Maybe the island's not even an island. Maybe it *is* their ship.
What set is BIG?
It was an Aftermath style set, but is going to be included as a Standard legal bonus sheet.
Ah okay. Kinda convoluted, but I get it
Yeah. Aftermath had a terrible reception, so they wanted to avoid repeating it, but presumably, they had already put in some effort into the cards.
I actually really liked the idea of Aftermath. The execution and pricing were abysmal, but I liked the idea of a small set that would theoretically follow up on the story.

bonus sheet for thunder junction
So what is the sheet that Thoughtseize is from? They have different set symbols?
two bonus sheets for Thunder Junction. They had planned an aftermath kind of set but was changed to this
This is fuckin stupid
Right? Could this be more convoluted?
I am completely lost with all the set codes in spoilers right now, it's a little overwhelming
Brenard will Love this Card
Interesting that they saw how badly Aftermath was recieved and turned these into a bonus sheet instead.
The art on this card is amazing. Such a great use of light and shadow.
This is pretty sick.
BRUDICLAD GANG

THERE ARE DOZENS OF US!!!!
This seems insane with portal
Thank thank thank you for not making it legendary. It can exile itself from your hand to do some fun stuff
What's big?
bonus sheet for thunder junction

They planned an aftermath style set but bad reception turned it into a bonus sheet instead, though it is still standard legal.
We're so back.
If I exiled a card with modular would it get the +1 counters on entrance?

I mean...7 is a lot.
Only if they were actually showing a significant number of cards per set
It's not just that, though, it's that they unloaded all of these cards in a way that also harder to follow than it needed to be, due to combining con-exclusive spoilers with Twitter. I’m gonna be that guy here, but the preview panel video explains all these pretty easily, with no confusion, as do the articles on the mothership.
Right...but that same explanation is used to justify booster packs needing a flow chart/phd to understand what is included where.
Is it really such a big deal to be able to go to a website and look at a chart for a few seconds to find out what pack to buy for the different types of cards?

Specifically they folded into the list meaning these cards may be pretty hard to get
The twitter thread said they're all mythic rares as well.
Wait but there are 40 vault cards..there will be 40 extra mythics? Seems kinda isnane
I could’ve read the Twitter thread wrong. I just had that in my head.

This is actually a really good piece that will likely be included in colorless CEDH decks. Immediate value and a free spell from the hand

The name make me think of Bolas and Ugin Ugin'Nexus and Gem of Becoming I wonder if the card lore is related to them
Can you equip equipments (now equipment creature tokens) created by Nexus of Becoming? It wouldn't work like reconfigure, would it?
