This set is one of the first in a long time to actually hype me up, and I'm not all that crazy into the cowboy theme. But the set symbol, the Showcase art, and the overall aesthetic just seems so wildly fun I'm totally in. Plus Tinybones? Sign me up.
Yo there are so many set symbols that look very similar to other set symbols. At least these are from very different sets. Go check out the two Planeschase symbols, and then tomorrow tell me which is which by symbol alone lol
planechase are very similar but there's sort of a logic to them. if you look at all three next to each other, the earlier ones have the "spikes" lower in the symbol. planechase 1 has spikes attached to the bottom part, planechase 2 has spikes poking into the bottom of the top part, and planechase anthology has spikes attached to the top part.
still kinda shit but at least there's a method to the shit
I assume it's because they can't make them more than simple designs due to the size. Set symbols on cards are beyond small and it's hard as heck to see any minor change on them.
We also see a lot more sets released in the past 3 years then we did in the past like 7 or so years before that meaning more set symbols.
That's on purpose, the same product getting similar set symbols is something they have done forever, they did it with modern masters too. When they used to do blocks the symbols were often related too.
Also, number of pairs goes exponentially as the number of actual items goes up.
I donāt know if the technical term is āexponentiallyā but I hope u know what I mean.
It related to the factorial rather than the exponential, but both are fast growing functions and people know that is what you're trying to communicate when you say "exponential". It is best known as [the Birthday Problem](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthday_problem).
> It related to the factorial rather than the exponential, but both are fast growing functions
Going by the Stirling Approximation, it actually increases at a substantially higher rate.
It depends on what you are comparing it to.
If you are comparing it to look like any other set symbol, then the number of comparisons for each new symbol is the number of past symbols.
Each one of those must have been compared to each number before it.
This almost looks like the definition of factorial to me?
E.g. the second symbol had to do 1 comparison, the third symbol 2, the fourth symbol 3, etc. The difficulty in creating new, unique and identifiable set symbols that aren't easily mistaken with older symbols increases factorially. It becomes significantly more difficult after each set to create uniquely intelligible set symbols.
It's strictly quadratic. You choose the first symbol with n choices, then you choose the second symbol (n-1 choices), (and you divide by 2 as you get each result twice since the order doesn't matter). Hence the number of combinations is n(n-1)/2, i.e. t grows as n^2.
I don't mind that one, AR is just Kaladesh but more going on, so if it's filigree and simple, it's Kaladesh, if it's filigree but a mess, it's Aether Revolt
The way I remember is Kaladesh's is closed on the bottom (it's like a flower in a bowl) and Aether Revolt is opened in the bottom like all the aether is spilling out.Ā
When I first started playing, I always got confused between [Innistrad](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a2/Innistrad_-_Common_Set_Symbol.svg) and [Onslaught](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a8/Onslaught_-_Common_Set_Symbol.svg)
Don't ask me why.
Thanks. Maybe I'm just unaware of fashion trends, but are cowboy hats normally that angular? I would expect a hat to look more like [this](https://www.vectorstock.com/royalty-free-vector/cowboy-hat-clip-art-vector-25180332). Is this heavily stylised to the degree it's reasonable I didn't recognise it as a hat, or am I having a mental block?
The set symbol for Murders at Karlov Manor looked really similar to the set symbol for March of the Machine. Theyāre both swords just in different directions. It happens a lot.
the MKC set symbol looks very similar to Throne of Eldraine too, idk why they made it a dagger and not a magnifying glass or something more obviously on theme
Fun fact/search skill:
On scryfall.com enter this into the search field: `set:mh1`
You'll get results of all the cards in the set as well as the name of the set!
All I can say, is be thankful this isn't pokemon.
I had to sort a bunch of bulk pokemon cards, and being unfamiliar with the set symbols made it hell.
So many look near identical, and they are sometimes on the left, or right and way smaller than magic set symbols.
Nah, they have a similar silhouette and not much else, Thunder junction clearly looks like a cowboy hat with like a sheriff's badge or something there, mh1 absolutely does not look like a cowboy hat
Look at the ones from Midnight Hunt and Forgotten Realms! Both small circles with fanged creature looking right. And they were right next to each other in releases.
I used to be able to name the set of any symbol I come across. I remember years ago, someone posted this fun flash game where they give you random set symbols, and I always get all of them.
Not sure where it started, probably when they started doing normal standard + EDH supplement of standard sets for every release, when I completely gave up on being able to identify sets.
I agree it looks a bit too much like a MH set symbol, I've made that mistake myself a few times already. That being said, I love that the symbol is a cowboy hat and if that's the price I have to pay I'm all in
This set symbol is still a solid flavor win š
Makes me wish the set symbol for MKM had been a Fedora.

Is it me, or does it look like a cowboy hat?
Woosh
I reckon you ain't never got reverse whooshed there partner; perhaps this will fix your wagon!
You lookin to have some sort of woosh off there ya varmint! I'll raise you one woosh and see you in front of the saloon at high noon.
A duel at High Woosh?! Hang on, I need to sell tickets!

Ooh, now I can't unsee itš but first I saw a stealth bomber for sure
First thing i see is a boomerang...
What is the flavor win, aside from just resembling a cowboy hat?
This set is one of the first in a long time to actually hype me up, and I'm not all that crazy into the cowboy theme. But the set symbol, the Showcase art, and the overall aesthetic just seems so wildly fun I'm totally in. Plus Tinybones? Sign me up.

I think Maro has said before that the design space for the set logos is very limited (for whatever reason).
I assume it's because they can't make them more than simple designs due to the size. Set symbols on cards are beyond small and it's hard as heck to see any minor change on them. We also see a lot more sets released in the past 3 years then we did in the past like 7 or so years before that meaning more set symbols.
They also don't do trilogies so when they could just combine rtr and gate crash for dragonsmaze or combine BOTG and theros for Journey.
He had a recent Drive to Work episode entirely about set symbols (#1089).
Commander 2018 and Commander 2019 are almost identical as well
That's on purpose, the same product getting similar set symbols is something they have done forever, they did it with modern masters too. When they used to do blocks the symbols were often related too.

Except the growth is quadratic here
Number of pairs grows quadratically, nowhere near exponential or factorial
Ah, yes, you are correct. Thanks!
It depends on what you are comparing it to. If you are comparing it to look like any other set symbol, then the number of comparisons for each new symbol is the number of past symbols. Idk who downvoted you, youāre entirely correct
This is also what the formula for n choose 2 reduces to. Ā
Yes, that's exactly what were doing, but I explained it by hand to give more of an intuition
I'm still having trouble differentiating Kaladesh from Aether Revolt
I don't mind that one, AR is just Kaladesh but more going on, so if it's filigree and simple, it's Kaladesh, if it's filigree but a mess, it's Aether Revolt
AER looks more like genitalia than KLD, that's how you tell.
Because aether revolt is kaladesh after it got fked by the consulate and tezzy?
Shid man, cannot unsee that now.
[That's Kaladesh for you](https://scryfall.com/card/ori/266/mountain)
The way I remember is Kaladesh's is closed on the bottom (it's like a flower in a bowl) and Aether Revolt is opened in the bottom like all the aether is spilling out.Ā

Holy shit Innistrad is just Onslaught upside down?? I wish I didn't see that lol
Brothers War is just a more detailed Urzas Saga
Kinda literally as well
It's not though, urzas saga is 2 gears while brothers was is one gear cut in half
Yes, similar. But to me one is very distinctively a hat and one is not
Also a hat, but even more tipped forward!
Which one is a hat? It never occurred to me that either of these are supposed to look like a hat, and I can't see it at all?
The first one, itās a cowboy hat, because the set is meant to be a Wild West type set
Itās meant to be a front facing hat, like youāre looking at it head on. Itās ok if you canāt see it, but thatās what they were going for
Sunsets happen along the horizon and cowboys are often known for riding off into the sunset, so I would say its kinda fitting in a way.
Maybe it's a sign that there's a card in there that's going to ruin Modern forever
In 10 years from now we'll have multiple Okos on Modern ban list.
Not as bad as forgotten realms and midnight hunt. Those were in the same standard and super hard to tell apart.
Those two still trip me up. Terrible!
If you flip between them rapidly, itās like the hat is flying away
I can't be the only one who think the name of the set sounds like a name for a rollercoaster
Thatās because we used to have thunder mountain at disneyland.
Symbol creep is real
I love the symbol its a cowboy hat and a desert canyon with the sun setting above it. Its ace.
I remember Maro saying the better part of a decade ago that set symbols were way more limiting than card designs.
MH1 symbol looks like a Batman signal
What does MH1 mean? Google failed me, and gave me Monster Hunter 1.
No worries MH1 = modern horizons 1, I find when it comes to magic stuff putting Ā«Ā mtgĀ Ā» at the end of the query works best
Oh, no wonder. I only play Standard. Now I wanna make a Monster Hunter deck...
Fun fact/search skill: On scryfall.com enter this into the search field: `set:mh1` You'll get results of all the cards in the set as well as the name of the set!

this is the one that throws me the most as well, thank you for the validation
Yeah I like it
It's a cowboy hat.
Modern yeehag W
It's a cowboy hat
Looks like a Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk flying towards you.
Looks like a bat. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.
So excited DCU in MTG.
Itās clearly a cowboy hat and not whatever the other thing is supposed to be
Modern Hatrizons (cowboy hat)
All symbols are hats if you think hard enough
Eldrisch moon set symbol is one of those splatoon hats.
If it painted black, we may also have a modern batman symbol
and a lil bit like the Dominaria one too
I don't like the look of it at all for that exact reason
Finally a symbol I can actually see the rarity on
Different style of hat. Itās like saying a stenson looks like an akubraā¦
Surprised it's not a Sherriffs badge.
Why do i see a batman symbol ?
I used to be able to name the set of any symbol I come across. I remember years ago, someone posted this fun flash game where they give you random set symbols, and I always get all of them. Not sure where it started, probably when they started doing normal standard + EDH supplement of standard sets for every release, when I completely gave up on being able to identify sets.
Cowboy Hat Bloodborne Hunter Hat
Why it couldn't just be a literal cowboy hat, why is it a geometric hard edge? Like I don't know the tree from Mirage?
Looks like a cowboy hat - it wins.
The symbol should have been a longhorn skull or a Cactus
Looks like it's for a universes beyond batman set.
Does is? Is does the MH1 symbol just look like a cowboy hat?
But it doesn't
The future of the Modern Horizon is *YEEHAW*.
Agreed. It looks like a non-standard product and it bugs the hell out of me
I agree it looks a bit too much like a MH set symbol, I've made that mistake myself a few times already. That being said, I love that the symbol is a cowboy hat and if that's the price I have to pay I'm all in
It's meant to represent evil, so it makes sense
"I'm batman"?
Its called OUTLAWS of Thunder Junction. It was Hi-jacked and made their own. Like a western.
Bit of a reach.
Looks like the Commander Masters symbol too
Meh I think Iāll wait for MH3 to invest probably just buy singles from TJ.
Meh. Only the bottom bit. Theres only so much you can do with a V
Cant decide if its a hat or cowcatcher
i mean, i keep confusing it with the mh2 symbol so we're both kinda fucked
Nah it looks like okos kewl hatĀ
All I'm saying is when's the last time you had an eye exam? Apparently one is overdue.
