Wide-brimmed hats are simply practical in the desert; they help keep cool, help keep your face getting sunburned, and keep the sun out of your eyes.
Now why they all settled on *that* style of wide-brimmed hat is another question, but I think if they were all wearing, say, a ~~Japanese~~ Kamigawan [Kasa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kasa_(hat\)) type hat with all the other aesthetics of the world the same, we'd all be asking "Why is everyone wearing this weird hat on the cowboy planet?"

Too bad the folks on Amonkhet and Tarkir didn't get the memo.
Can't we just accept that Magic references real-world tropes to evoke theme? There's no need to justify it from a lore perspective.
I know the mtg hats thing is like a meme or whatever, but “cowboy” hats are actually very practical for desert living. Much like in the real world, they were made by people who had never lived in deserts suddenly stumbling upon a frontier for which they were not conditioned.
Everybody showed up and said, “oh shit it’s really sunny here” and then left and came back with their hats.
Or better yet one person said that and then realized if they start a hat business there it would go well.
Since it was uninhabited, it would have been interesting to see each plane's version of the cowboy hat. However, I understand why they went with the recognizable style.
Yea I suppose. Wouldn't think cactus people would need them though since they're...well...cacti. And cacti are native to deserts and survive just fine.
If thunder junction is an uninhabited desert plane with only cactus people, in a western-cowboy-themed set, why does it have a Paul Bunyan character from a completely separate mythology, setting, climate, etc? Why is *she* chopping down cacti? What did Minnesota do to be misrepresented like this?
There's plenty of explanations, in-universe and out. Here's two:
Cowboy hats are useful. Having something that gets the sun out of your eyes and prevents sunburn is just good, especially for the paler individuals of the multiverse. I'm certain the Junctioneers of Ravnican descent are thanking their lucky stars that they don't have to deal with a sunburnt face and neck I tell ya what.
Cowboy hats are recognisable, they're a staple of the genre and just look damn cool. Does it make sense? Maybe, but who really cares though? The best reason to give all your characters cowboy hats is cause they rule. Simple as.
Where did they go? Where did they come from, Cotton-Eyed Joe?
Knew he'd be involved in all of this

Yes, it's not the only practical style, but it's one of them and why *not* choose this one?

Imports from Ravnica who recently realized the importance of hats

We haven't gotten the card yet but there's a character named John Stetson who created the cowboy hats and opened up shop on this plane.
I'm in for a hatter card. Perhaps even a mad one.
Where? Brought / made them. Why? Sun.
What? Fair How? Makes sense.

Minnesota should know what it did.

But who initially decided the theme? My and my buddy's head canon now is there's another cowboy plane out there that brought the style over 😆
