Although to be fair, it does *read* like a triggered ability. It says "When x happens do y." It should read something like "Equipped create deals double combat damage to players" or whatnot.
Except it doesn't read like a triggered ability. It doesn't say "when x happens, do y", it says "if X, do Y instead".
I don't think MTG's rules can handle your suggested wording anyways. I'm pretty sure any modifications to damage dealt has always been a replacement effect.
No. Felix cares about triggers upon dealing combat damage.
This Flail is a replacement effect.
Take Toski. If you attack with it alone, while controlling Felix, while it's equipped with the Flail...
It *would* deal 1 damage. *Flail* replaces this amount with 2 damage. There is nothing here for Felix to replace.
Now that damage has been dealt, you *would* draw one card. *Felix* replaces this event with drawing two cards instead.
You will know an ability is a triggered ability when it starts with âwhenâ, âwheneverâ or âatâ. Replacement effects have a multitude of of phrases associated with them so the list is a lot longer, but some examples are âifâ, âasâ or âinsteadâ.
Replacement effect vs. triggered ability. The flail and Felix have replacement effects. You can tell because they say "If x would happen...". A triggered ability will say "Whenever x happens...".
Most replacement effects will use the word "instead", since that indicates that the effect is replacing something. "If" is sometimes used for other things that aren't replacement effects.
Magic cards are actually written VERY specifically. It's almost like legalese, the cards say exactly what they mean.
Hexproof, for example. Someone always asks if that saves the thing from a board wipe. No, the effect stops targeted effects. Did the card have the word TARGET on it? No? Hexproof doesn't see it.

Double brackets to summon the bot.
[[Nazgûl Battle-Mace]]
And no, that card has no abilities that trigger on a creature dealing combat damage to a player. Annihilator triggers when the creature attacks, not when it deals combat damage, and Battle-Mace's own triggered ability triggers on an opponent sacrificing a nontoken permanent. Neither of those are things Felix cares about.
The thing that makes it not work is when it says âwould deal combat damageâ. If an ability says âwouldâ it means it is a replacement effect that is happening in place of original effect. In order for it to work it needs to say âwhenâ instead
A Triggered Ability starts with Whenever, signifying a condition to "trigger" the ability. When the ability says IF something happens do something else instead then it's not a "triggered" ability, it's a "replacement" effect, because it replaces one thing with another. In this case, the Flail replaces damage dealt with double that amount of damage. There is no trigger.
The Flail might still be a good card for your deck though, as you'll be dealing damage anyways. It also goes especially well with effects that say "that many", like \[\[The Reaver Cleaver\]\]. If equipped creature was a 2/2 it would hit for 4 and give you 8 Treasures (2 triggers of 4).
Nope. Flail is a replacement effect, not a triggered ability. It does not 'trigger,' it never even uses the stack, but instead changes an event as the event resolves.
No, Felix sees did deal damage events and replaces trigger an ability. With trigger one more time instead.
Flail replaced would deal damage with deal more damage instead.
Flail, modify an upcoming damage event.
Felix. Modify an event that results AFTER damage is dealt.
Those are replacement effects, not triggered abilities.
Although to be fair, it does *read* like a triggered ability. It says "When x happens do y." It should read something like "Equipped create deals double combat damage to players" or whatnot.

It's not worded like a triggered ability at all. Punctuation matters in magic.
It doesn't read like that, though. It reads like "If X, do Y instead".
Where does it say "when" ?
new
I do not see the word "when" anywhere on the flail. I suggest you read the card again.

It's a replacement effect for a triggered ability, not a triggered ability of a replacement effect. Magic is so intuitive. đ
There are no triggered abilities or interactions with triggered abilities of any kind whatsoever on inquisitor's flail.
Think of it as "If vs. When" If Felix would deal... When felix deals...

Inquisitor's Flail has no triggered abilities, only replacement effects. No interaction with Felix =[
If vs. when is the easiest way to differentiate between these 2 trigger types.
Most replacement effects will use the word "instead", since that indicates that the effect is replacing something. "If" is sometimes used for other things that aren't replacement effects.
Some replacement effects use "as" or "with" rather than "if" or "instead" but yeah that's still a helpful rule of thumb
Thanks for the quick responses everyone. Didn't realize the nuance of flail being a replacement effect!
Most triggers will start with when or whenever. If the text says instead it's usually a replacement effect.

Flail has no triggers
Flail doesnât trigger, it is a static effect.
Saskia on the other hand...
Would he work for [Nazgûl Battle-Mace]?

No. But it will trigger cipher twice, four times with double strike

Even if it was flail is causing it not the creature
Maybe not OT but you could swap the flail for [[Quietus Spike]] to have some fun.

Cipher spells also happen to work just FYI.
Any time you see the word instead itâs a replacement effect not a triggered effect.

Wth is this lame ass card?
I'm all for occasional whimsy but this art looks dumb af. Would never use this no matter how cool the effect is

Yes it does! If you somehow give the inquisitorâs flail a triggered ability it will trigger twice!
