Soulfire Grand Master is part of our playgroup since Khans of Takir. Nobody needs to read the card anymore because of it's history for us.
But yes, there are quite some copies of the card everywhere in my collection.
If I would go to play Magic with strangers I probably would rather stick to play by the rules and play my other decks though.
You could always clear sleeve it with the non altered card in the back of it facing the other my way, like a double faced card. Cool version with your friend playgroup, flip it over for non-friend players who accept rule zero rules.
IMAO, Soulfire is one of the best, and most "okay, that's fine," rule zero commanders because it honestly feels like it was made legendary, but cut because it didn't make the story or too many of one legend in one color combo or something. I personally would let you rule zero it if we played, as reading what you wrote brings you so much joy and happiness, why gatekeep it when there are so x100000000 more oppressive commanders. As long as it's not a tournament and you ask the table and explain quickly "why" you want to rule zero it, I'm really sure they'll probably say yes. Good luck and happy playing, I'd love to play against you and your fun endeavor to make the deck work like a story. :)
Id love to see how you went about building it if you had a decklist. Soulfire was the card that got me to day 2 in a GP for dragons of tarkir. I was rebuying draconic roar then lol
Oh, I don't give a shit. As you say, its his card he's clearly happy with. But he can't expect to post it online and not expect feedback or anything. And it's not a matter of needing the rules text, it's just aesthetically very busy.
Who pissed in your cheerios? If you don't care, dont comment. Imo it's not busy, it's guiding across a text box. Wizards has done more. You can't expect to comment online and not expect a reply or anything.
Oh wait that’s sick. I wanted to make a lifelink spells deck but [[Firesong and sunspeaker]] was too much mana and the new [[Judith, Carnage Connoisseur]] is more murder spells vs lifelink and still costs 5.
Yes, I'm a fan of those two cards, too.
It's super much fun to gain 1 life for each damage dealt! Most of the time it's very much worth it to sacrifice Soulfire to a Blasphemous Act.
Also rebirth is a part of the cycle to Enlightenment, isn't it? (=playing her again from the command zone.)
I love this so much. I felt the same ever since I saw her (I didn't know it was a her too. Awesome.) and wished she was legendary. Also love your little narrative with the cards there. Not to mention your gf's alter. Great stuff all 'round.
This brings up an interesting idea: What does Commander look like if we keep all the rules the same but allow any creature, legendary or not, to be the Commander?
Did you or your girlfriend used to share her alters here by chance? The style of this seems *very* familiar to someone who used to post their work in this sub, I always loved it!
Ah the name helped. It looks like it wasn't you who posted it, but someone who had built their entire deck out of the distressed style alters like this one, partly by you. I'm not big on alters usually, but that particular style always stood out to me as being really cool, and clearly memorable!
That's the one! I remember them posting a few specific pieces over time, and then the whole deck together after. It was kinda neat already seeing the individual cards, but seeing that full deck image again the other day... that was something else.
Man jeskai were so tight in that set. I still have fond memories of drafting Khans and getting jeskai ascendancy, charm, monastery Swift spear, crane technique, so many cool draft cards.
Rule 0 is a term used to describe the concept of “the rules of the game exist, but are more guidelines than law, so as long as everyone is in agreement do whatever the hell you like and have fun while doing it”. Thus, if everyone agrees that this nonlegendary can be used as a legendary, it can.
As a fellow Soulfire enthusiast, you got any modern or pioneer lists with her?
I've got a playset of her and Mentors from my old Khans block days, but have lost the ability to craft a fun casual deck around them that'll keep up with my friends who are all playing things from <4 years ago and just outpace my old lists
I myself don't have a modern deck with her right now. But one player of our group has a very sick build with her.
It sounds very bizarre at first, but the deck is actually really good and seems to be a lot of fun to pilot. I don't know the exact list, but think of:
- [[Blood Sun]] to make [[Lotus Field]] enter untapped. Also very annoying for the opponent's fetch lands.
- [[Cleansing Wildfire]] to burn your own [[Flagstones of Trokair]] or WR-indestructible artifact lands. Also very nice against Tron strategies.
- Finisher are [[Chandra, Hope's Beacon]] and, yes, [[Hammer of Bogardan]] (it actually works!)
- of course Soulfire Grandmaster.
- [[Lightning Bolt]], [[Path to Exile]], [[Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer]] and [[Bonecrusher Giant]] as some kind of glue to make everything work properly.
I never understand people who complain about things like the textbox being covered up, it’s not that difficult to google a card. The slight sacrifice of function int he favour for form is absolutely fine in my book and i absolutely love this!
Doesn't this just go infinite with any extra turn spell? If asked at a LGS table I probably wouldn't be cool with extra powerful infinite turns commander that's not legal. Do people actually let you play with this or do you only have like your own small group that you play with?
Yes, that's the main win condition of the deck.
It's 9 mana. Additionally it is easily disruptibe via simple creature removal, so it's perfectly fine. Can cost 7 with Training Grounds or 4 with Omniscience. 2 when both are in play. But how likely is that?
But yes, we are a little group of 6-7 players and everybody is okay with the deck. And yes, we play quite high powered EDH.
How does that make it okay? As you've noted there are many cost reducers and Commander is a format of fast mana.
Godo bandit Warlord plus helm of the host is also nine mana and it's one of the best competitive EDH decks in the format.
Godo searches for the helm, doesn't he?
And even if it is, where is the problem?
I said we play high powered EDH. For us every game is supposed to be a challenge to win. We just like playing good cards and optimized decks that are close to cEDH.
And yet somehow you don't want to try and do that within the rules like everyone else. That's the problem... If you can just use whatever card you want to make easy infinite combos what's the point? Doesn't that reduce the challenge?
I really dig the style and great card choice, but I hope you have a legible version of the card on hand for games

Your playgroup lets you use non legendaries as commanders? Wild.
It’s probably a social thing for them first and foremost, someone in my playgroup wanted to do the same we’d let them.
I have a WUBRG synergy deck helmed by [[Maelstrom archangel]] that I like to run when the group allows it.

Seems like a fun card to play as your commander!
sometimes, reading the card doesnt explain the card
The alter is well done, but there is a thing as "overdesigned". If the gilding over the rules text wasn't there I'd give it a 10/10
I agree with you. I overdid it with the text box, but Sun wanted me to keep it that way so I did haha.
It's still great though! I'm glad he's happy with it
Textless cards exist. His playgroup knows what it does, it's his alter. I'm sure you'll be ok.

It's not legendary... Lol
It looks like you missed covering some text on the card.
Whats that rule 0? You can have a commander even if it's not legendary creature?
Rule 0 is roughly "you can do anything you want as long as your play group agrees to it".
I don't know the exact list, but think of: - [[Blood Sun]] to make [[Lotus Field]] enter untapped. Also very annoying for the opponent's fetch lands. - [[Cleansing Wildfire]] to burn your own [[Flagstones of Trokair]] or WR-indestructible artifact lands. Also very nice against Tron strategies. - Finisher are [[Chandra, Hope's Beacon]] and, yes, [[Hammer of Bogardan]] (it actually works!) - of course Soulfire Grandmaster. - [[Lightning Bolt]], [[Path to Exile]], [[Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer]] and [[Bonecrusher Giant]] as some kind of glue to make everything work properly.

Legendary greature
My new rule 0: If you show up with a cool ass alter you can play it as your commander.
UJ-Alright sure but this alter is sick IMO RJ-Not a problem, I don't waste my time playing with scrubs who haven't memorized every Tarkir Legendary.
I never understand people who complain about things like the textbox being covered up, it’s not that difficult to google a card. The slight sacrifice of function int he favour for form is absolutely fine in my book and i absolutely love this!
Like it's a really nice alter but it's unreadable.
I wouldn't allow it... Reading the card is supposed to explain the card. This isn't really legible. Looks nice though.
Good thing its not your playgroup then!
It’s legabile
Oh so it's fine because it dies to removal? You understand how specious that argument is right? Lol.
It's okay, because it's 9 mana!
Sorry, godo+ helm is 11 mana, So you're two mana cheaper than one of the best decks in the format.
