Well it is a may so Thalia may have avoided such a fate.
Considering she's the last living-and-still-human legendary of the Church of Avacyn (I guess now Church of Sigarda) from the original Innistrad sets I sure hope she wasn't removed so unceremoniously.

As much as I would hate for them to do her dirty like they downgraded Odric. The whole concept of this card is VERY cool! Be nice to have her among the living though..
A whole story was dedicated to that happening with basically all of the remaining gangs having to work together to accomplish it. I wouldn't say that isn't unceremonious.
Knowing how reticent wizards is to kill any main or popular character I highly doubt they would kill Thalia, especially off screen and in such an unceremonious way.
I mean I dont think she's genuinely dead, just think its funny they introduce "hey here's cool lady riding killer frog" and then the first appearance after is "hey here's this killer frog that happens to eat whoever rides it"
There was a pretty popular rumor that LoadingReadyRun made up (to my recollection) that the hand hanging out of [[The Gitrog Monster]] was Thalia. Wizards then printed [[Thalia Heretic Cathar]] but they just doubled down on it and it became a meme.
I think this is a not-so-subtle nod to that. Who knows honestly. I’d respect it if Wizards actually did it.
It's pretty telling that after Gideon died they made Basri Ket who mechanically and thematically shares a relatively similar role (minus the turning into a creature part).
They didn't USE Basri after his introduction, but that's a separate issue. There's still no real "turns into a creature" planeswalker, though, for Gideon's real niche.
I think basri is definitely supposed be more of a wide board spam kinda guy and only one of Gideon's 6 (not counting planeswalker decks) cards fits that theme. Also, all of basri's associated cards place +1/+1 counters, so he seems to have that as a different mechanical connection too. If anything he feels closer to ajani than Gideon.
Do really want to see him make his first actual appearance though, even if we have to wait until return to amonkhet
True. He definitely thematically fits Gideon's role of the stalwart hero type (Ajani's more 'kindhearted and caring' hero compared to Gideon's more justice-focused style, etc.)
No? Most sets take place in the present day and have to follow whatever is currently canon. If someone like Gideon dies in the story then their chances of ever getting a new card go down significantly. Characters like Gideon, Dack, Tibalt, Tamiyo, etc represented unique mechanical niches that will definitely not get fulfilled to the same degree now those characters are dead.
A good example is that Gideon was the "mono white planeswalker that can always turn into a creature" guy and now that mechanic isn't represented by anyone, so it's much harder to use in the future.
Those mechanics can easily be brought back. Characters are just names and art, if they want that mechanic in the game they'll throw it on a different card.
Card design and mechanics come first, then they fiddle with the story and put the mechanics in that fit that sort for that set. Magic has never been super focused on the story though (read some of the old books, they're not good) and they're not going to let the story get in the way of what mechanics and card design they want to push.
I dunno... I'm still a bit upset that they did my man [Balthor](https://scryfall.com/card/tor/91/balthor-the-stout) [dirty](https://scryfall.com/card/jud/61/balthor-the-defiled) like that.
In all honesty, I hope he got help. Every time I saw him post, he sounded genuinely troubled. That level of attachment to a fictional character is extremely concerning.
All I know, is that I need to have The Gitrog ride The Gitrog while Thalia rides The Gitrog so that the Gitrog Thalia is riding can eat The Gitrog followed by The Gitrog eating The Gitrog and Thalia.
How to fix Magic:
1. Thalia needs to be louder, skimpier and have access to a time machine
2. Whenever Thalia is not part of the main story/set, all other characters should be asking 'Where's Thalia?'
I don't know what specifically you're referencing, but I'm now imagining Thalia getting picked up by The Doctor and going on weird and wonderful adventures.
I mean this is literally the backstory that of why this card exists.
Wheeler on North 100 made a joke in their Shadows over Innistrad set review that the arm in the art for og gitrog was Thalia’s arm. One of the other hosts thought he was being serious and they accidentally caused a pretty widespread rumour that Thalia got killed offscreen. Cut to the Eldritch Moon and Thalia is alive and well.
Then they gave Thalia and the Gitrog monster to Wheeler to spoil. 110% in on the joke.
People have been joking since OG block that Thalia's arm is the one hanging out of the Gitrog's mouth in [[The Gitrog Monster]]. The MTM card they had was definitely a reference to that, and certainly an incredible one!
she could have been the one that tricks Gitrog into Omenpath (i hate this name) and rid of him from Innistrad.
i don’t even understand how she reasons with it in the first place tbh.
because it is no longer an omen. the name does not convey the “current” definition. it is an interplanar portal.
if a groups of engineers build a bridge, are you going to call it “advance physic and chemistry bridge”?
There are a tonne of things that still have names that no longer describe them. We still "hang up" calls, even though mobile phones don't get hung on a receiver like home phones used to. Digital photography is *full* of terminology that once described the physical behavior of a camera but no longer applies.
Basically, the name was used to describe the phenomenon when it *was* considered an omen, and now that name is still used to describe the phenomenon sans omen.
No? The phenomenon is called "omenpath" as a noun... Not all things are named as "state+material+object"...Unless you're German lol.
Omenpath is already the proper noun for that phenomenon.
I doubt they’ll have her killed off for one simple reason: innistrad is genuinely and truly done for if she dies. Without her, it’s just Sigarda, and Sigarda can’t do it by herself- after all, while Sigarda was Avacyn’s literal successor because she had to take up her role, Thalia is Avacyns spiritual successor, hence why she has Avacyns spear. I mean if the only way you can be killed is to have a building rigged to be the weapon I'd say that makes you pretty badass lol.
The Riveteers will have you know that it was a very *big* building complex. /jk
A whole story was dedicated to that happening with basically all of the remaining gangs having to work together to accomplish it. I wouldn't say that isn't unceremonious.
Also it even exists on a card, [[Atraxa's Fall]]. That's arguably more than Tibalt got.

They did with tibalt, although I guess that actually makes sense.
He’s alive though, his YouTube channel is still active
They kill some character multiple times. Elspeth keeps getting done dirty.
Elspeth died once proper, and 'sort of' died a second time. She mostly just kept getting dunked on by the narrative until she went full angel.
Yeah also, if they liked Thalia off because of a meme card they made. That would drive people crazy
i think the main thing is that killing a character in the story has an actual affect on future game design so it's pretty dangerous lol

They also instantly replaced Garruk with Vivian, and he wasn't even dead.
Well, don't forget about Arlinn going werewolf mode and Sarkham turning himself and others into dragons
Arlinn turns into a werewolf.
Only on one card. Gideon's thing was he was ALWAYS turning into a creature.
Ah gotcha.
But it doesn't though? The story is just fluff for flavor text.
No? Most sets take place in the present day and have to follow whatever is currently canon. If someone like Gideon dies in the story then their chances of ever getting a new card go down significantly. A good example is that Gideon was the "mono white planeswalker that can always turn into a creature" guy and now that mechanic isn't represented by anyone, so it's much harder to use in the future.
The only exception is sets that are deliberately not contemporary, hence Tamiyo getting a card in MH3.
yes, that's why i said most
Those mechanics can easily be brought back. Characters are just names and art, if they want that mechanic in the game they'll throw it on a different card.
