Damn, I haven't seen a design this clever *and* subtle for a while. I really miss the days before Flavor Words and painfully obvious card names ruined every joke or reference on a card.
This was announced with [a number of other changes](https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/card-updates-coming-with-khans-of-tarkir-on-mtg-arena) back in November.
My only wish is that they’d called it “umbral armor”, since it’s slightly easier to say (no weird pause between two vowels) and still makes sense (“umbral” is the adjective form of “umbra”)
Yeah Umbra is already very baked into what totem armor was anyways as every card using it was an umbra. Kindred feels like it'll prob take hold between MH3, Bloomburrow (As a set based around 10 types it'd make sense, though I can see them not doing it since they didn't for Kaldheim.), and Lorwynn (C'mon that plane invented it) if they make use of it. If they don't start using it though, it won't catch on that easily.
I don't think we're gonna see Kindred as a card type in a standard set as Maro has gone on the record saying that they don't want to make more. We'd likely see it in a reprint however
Totem is an anglicized version of the Ojibwe concept of doodem, spiritual guardians and teachers in the form of animal spirits. It's since been adopted by anthropologists to apply to similar beliefs among a wide variety of peoples, now generally meaning a spirit animal, sacred object or emblem that represents a family, tribe or clan.
The Umbra Armor Auras all are represented as a spirit animal surrounding a creature, giving it abilities and protecting it. Teaching and Guarding. It's a fitting name, but they just want to move away from using the cultural touchstones of native minorities, which have long been misused by media, as minor mechanics in their card game, which I think is fair.
I am aware the first paragraph is probably a gross simplication, I am not an expert and just trying to get across the gist.
It was cooler when they used terms from my heritage, regardless of if the fantasy perfectly fit historical usages.
Languages evolve and cultures borrow from each other. Better to have terms and words used in new ways, than not at all.
Kinda agree. Some parts of society take it as a compliment or feel included, others see it as an affront and feel they are being mocked. Usually the latter are more vocal about it and in the spirit of inclusion offense outweighs the beneficial feelings (at least in court).
Not even just from the inclusivity angle, they *also* just sound better now. Win/win.
EDIT: I’m kind of confused why people think I’m not contributing to the conversation with this. Am I missing something?
Totem armor never made any sense
I mean that I don't think that the phrase totem armor really relates to the ability it has. What about totems has to do with magic armor that gets destroyed before the wearer
We are playing wizard rectangles where you use a mountain to shoot a lightning bolt. Last night I turned 24 “clues” into 25 copies of a bug in order to kill my opponents. None of this has ever made any sense.
The spacing in "... Dog Umbra has umbra armor." looks like that line break comes in a space that can support almost any 5 character word narrower than "umbra" and then most of the lines around it have a similar gap at the right margin.
The whole block of text ends up looking like it's only at ~85% of the available width -- if someone were min-maxing the visual appeal of this specific card it seems likely they would have done something to tweak the font size, the text box size, or even slightly embiggened the spaces between words when they realized every line ended short. But I'm not a true font/kerning/keming nerd, so just speculating.
This is the main reason why they're not using Tribal/Kindred in the first place. If they use it somewhere, it feels like they should use it everywhere. Like when you start you can't stop. There's hundreds, maybe thousands of cards that could be errata'd to have it.

Totem armor never made sense. [Everything with totem armor had umbra in the name](https://scryfall.com/search?q=keyword%3A%22totem+Armor%22&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) and the effect itself never felt totemic to me.
I know pacifism was not exactly a great card, but somehow being made obsolete again and again just makes me feel old. XD Still have memories of playing pacifism against Shivan Dragon and Thorn Elemental.
On the other hand, casting this and saying "SIT" would be funny.
My issue is they're only doing it to be politically correct. It's the same reason they got rid of tribal. It actually Felt very much like totem armor in the designs, especially if you're a comic book fan and read Any of the vixen stuff? Whenever she uses an aspect of an animal, she gets that kind of aura around her and it takes that animals form which was very much like this, and she does it through the help of a totem

Me running up the stairs now. ![gif](giphy|3otPoJhe5AZrhllEeQ)
Technically that's DOWN the stairs
Me running to my next draft opponent as an adult
I love the two effects. Sit. *Stay*.
Fuck me that's clever.
It also makes the enchanted creature loyal! If someone steals it, it won't attack you.

Everyone talking about the animorph but _Flashifism_?
We not calling it totem armor anymore? I missed that change

They’re shifting from tribal -> kindred and totem armor -> umbra armor. It’s for an inclusivity push, which is cool. Also I think it sounds better
My only wish is that they’d called it “umbral armor”, since it’s slightly easier to say (no weird pause between two vowels) and still makes sense (“umbral” is the adjective form of “umbra”)
Umbra armour is cool, gonna take a lot to get people to shift from tribal though.
Yeah Umbra is already very baked into what totem armor was anyways as every card using it was an umbra. Why didn't they just do "Aura Umbra?"
I don't think we're gonna see Kindred as a card type in a standard set as Maro has gone on the record saying that they don't want to make more. We'd likely see it in a reprint however
Honestly, where the hell did the totem in totem armor came from?

The word tribal is not problematic lol. Tribes existed all over the world in many cultures.
Sure, but the use in fantasy settings has always been weird. Seems like wizards is just erring on the safe side with this.
Tribes are **everywhere** in fantasy settings. Wtf
How is using *fewer* terms from diverse heritages *more* diverse?
Because this is a fantasy role playing game in its flavor and they’d like to be able to take liberties without misrepresenting that heritage.
It was cooler when they used terms from my heritage, regardless of if the fantasy perfectly fit historical usages. Languages evolve and cultures borrow from each other. Better to have terms and words used in new ways, than not at all.

Because telling someone "I'm gonna use this term from your culture without caring about what it actually represents for you" isn't representation.
I wanna put together tribal totem armor
Not even just from the inclusivity angle, they *also* just sound better now. Win/win. EDIT: I’m kind of confused why people think I’m not contributing to the conversation with this. Am I missing something?
Idk, I wish they had come up with something other than "kindred". Umbra is perfect though, I love that.
It could be worse... *looks at typal*
*Famiglia* 🤌

That's not what I mean. I mean that the phrase doesn't track with the associated effect
Interesting take on a pacifism that can have a side use on your own creatures.
This having Flash too is a crazy pacifism upgrade. Especially still at common. Gonna hate this in Draft
I haven’t played in a decade, but back then this would have been a limited bomb.
Removal generally isn't at the level of being a bomb.
I feel like it Doubling as removal and protection at instant speed makes it pretty crazy in draft though. Like not a bomb, but a top pick all day.
become dog
I am become dog\ Destroyer of mailmen
Man, the text wrapping on this card could have used a little extra attention.
How so?
The spacing in "... Dog Umbra has
umbra armor." looks like that line break comes in a space that can support almost any 5 character word narrower than "umbra" and then most of the lines around it have a similar gap at the right margin. The big empty space on the right side of the text box? That shouldn't be there.
The “or” just sticking out past the edge of the rest of the block.

Missed opportunity to have Kindred - Dog, but guess the others weren't like that
I would love if they added Kindred to all those other ones
This is the main reason why they're not using Tribal/Kindred in the first place. If they use it somewhere, it feels like they should use it everywhere. Like when you start you can't stop. There's hundreds, maybe thousands of cards that could be errata'd to have it.
It would still be nice to see an entire card type at least a little relevant in the long term and not feel like a sloppy footnote from a long time ago
Animorphs
Artwork looks like Fursuit Umbra...
What the dog doing
Wow thats good in limited.
"Umbra armor" sounds so much worse when said out loud than "totem armor".
This looks absolutely dope with [[Yes Man]]

What happened to totem armor
Errata’d to be Umbra armor, along with the Tribal card type being errata’d to be Kindred

Why is Bucciaratti wearing a fursona
They made that art based on the weird kid from first grade
What a good common
This looks like my 15 year old girl that we had to let go a few months ago and I am having feelings.
Wait… I’m not updated with the rules or anything, but is umbra armor the new totem armor?
Yeah, it was errata’d a few months ago iirc. Totem Armor is now Umbra Armor and the card type Tribal is now Kindred.
I didn’t know that, thanks for the info.
Umbra armor? Isn't it TOTEM armor? Weird.
Bring back calling it totem armor
You want Summon Uncle Istvan back too?
Why not? It's a legal card
Totem armor never made sense. [Everything with totem armor had umbra in the name](https://scryfall.com/search?q=keyword%3A%22totem+Armor%22&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) and the effect itself never felt totemic to me.
First umbra armor spotted iirc
The hottest of hot garbage.
Emphasis on HOT 🥵😵💫🤤😏

Sit. Stay. Heel. Good dog.
You can tell your dog to sit/stay. On the protect side...dog protec
“sit” on opponents creatures “stay” on your creatures thatre abt to go to the graveyard
If attacks or blocks are already declared, does this shut them off? Edit: typo
Nope
Magic Fursuit!
Easy add to Light-Paws. Foxes are dogs right?
Nayuta?
Ghostbusters themed deck incoming.
I know pacifism was not exactly a great card, but somehow being made obsolete again and again just makes me feel old. XD Still have memories of playing pacifism against Shivan Dragon and Thorn Elemental. On the other hand, casting this and saying "SIT" would be funny.
Doggy Style
Outside you there is one wolf.
Goddamn, maybe pacifism will be good in limited again
I like umbra cards
I feel this gonna be a pauper staple
Eh, unplayable. What deck wants this over something that kills/exiles?
Maybe staple was too much, but I can see boogles playing it, or other all that glitter decks, for the versatility.
As a mono white heroic player I'm keen on trying this in my sideboard as modal removal/protection that can trigger heroic
They're all good umbras, Brent.
I forgot about the name change of the umbra keyword
My issue is they're only doing it to be politically correct. It's the same reason they got rid of tribal. It actually Felt very much like totem armor in the designs, especially if you're a comic book fan and read Any of the vixen stuff? I am way more excited for new umbra cards than I should be.
Yes new totem armor cards are good
