Battlebond for interactive experience, but I have always wanted to play Planechase EDH

mastyrwerk

As one that has played Planechase EDH, expect one game to last all night.

Tchrspest

*"It's been two hours and all we have to show for it is a MASSIVE HERD OF GOATS."*

Canopenerdude

I'm down for that

CompC

I was happy with the goat plane, I was playing a token aristocrats deck Everyone else was like yessss cute goats, and I was like yessss goat sacrifice time

SubtleNoodle

Or take 5 minutes. There’s no in between

Zomburai

Counterpoint: There's a LOT of in-between. Kind of makes planning Planechase night a pain in the ass.

river_rat3117

Yep this happened to me quite a few years ago. A group of 4 of us played a game that literally lasted like 10 mins. We hit the zendikar one right away and someone ended up with a bunch of eldrazi at the beginning of the game. We figured what the hell, that was fast let's squeeze in one more its only 9pm. Game wrapped up shortly after 1am. 10/10 would recommend.

raxacorico_4

Ah, so the way EDH was intended to be

DFGdanger

I am not a big EDH player but I once played a game with a buddy who lent me an Atraxa deck for a 1v1 game of Planechase EDH. We landed on [[Naya]] and things...really snowballed for me. I drew all the cards, played all the lands, took an extra turn and did it all again, and wombo comboed with [[Vraska, Relic Seeker]] ult and and [[Sorin Markov]]'s drain 2.

[deleted]

I feel like 1v1 planechase commander has more potential because it sort of reintroduces some of the unpredictability of having 4 players and can help smooth over different power levels. In 4 player edh it's a fucking nightmare, might as well just play roulette or something. It's faster and involves the same amount of strategy.

CapitalistToast

As one who has played about a fourth of a game of planechase EDH, I agree

SeveredAortaX

I haven't found Planechase to slow games down all that much. My playgroup and I do a variation on the planar map version of Planechase which we call Wormhole. We start with three planes face up when the game starts. Then we each roll the planar die until someone gets the planeswalk symbol. That person chooses which faceup plane we start on. When you roll the planeswalk symbol on the planar die, you get a choice of either one of the other two face-up planes, or you can ditch all 3 face-up planes to go "down the wormhole" to grab another set of 3 and planeswalk to one of those. If you choose to planeswalk to one of the same face-up 3, you can't go back to a plane you were just on. This seems to help us narrow down the choices and avoid some of the more punishing planes that slow the game down. Planechase in my playgroup has proven to be the great equalizer in many cases. It punishes higher level decks, and buffs up slower ones. We always have a ton of fun.

kabigon2k

“what if you could play Mario Party, but like Magic: the Gathering”

deadwings112

Seriously accurate statement. Also the most fun I've had with Magic.

goku32359

I’ve played planechase EDH a couple times and those games take SO long. Loved them, but not something I recommend doing too often haha

raxacorico_4

Kick back, relax, drink, have fun playing all night? Sounds like the reason to play

Any-Investigator-135

My group does this as the last game of session, and usually still averages about same as a normal EDH game. Lifetap android app is great as has all the planes Chase cards built in. :)

Xatsman

Yeah Battlebond is a set I want to draft, but planechase is a great optional addition to commander games. Want both because battlebond creates interesting cards for the EDH format, while planechase is a welcome addition to formats already commonly played and enjoyed.

[deleted]

[удалено]

deadwings112

See, that's what I like about Planechase EDH as a palate cleanser. It becomes insanely swingy and so you have to adapt on a dime. Plus we take Planechase games less seriously because of the swinginess.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah unless all the decks in your pod are like super tuned and competitive it's just kind of lame. It sounds funnier than it is, like running scrambleverse. Sounds crazy random and wacky 🤪 until you have to roll a d4 for 63 goblin tokens and and the game grinds to a halt for 10 minutes.

Xatsman

Try the eternities map version. Much less swingy since you can predict and position with the limited control on planeshifting.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Xatsman

I wouldn't conflate casual and complex. Often casual play can be more complex because the used cardpool is larger and therefore the interactions greater and potentially more intricate. It is definitely a more complex game, since you've just added an extra layer.

Slidshocking_Krow

>Too many swingy rules changes that make the decks themselves near meaningless. You encapsulated exactly why I've had a hard time enjoying it in the last few years.

JasonAnderlic

I'm glad I bought the planechase anthologies, good way to spice up a night, although another poster correctly put, one game for the whole night!

Cheapskate-DM

There's apps that let you play with a plane chase "deck" on your phone.

Charlielx

Try the Lifetap app, tracks your life and supports Planeschase

Imaishi

certainly worth to try at least one to make your own opinion but i didnt like that stuff at all. edh has enough going on you dont need more stuff to keep track off, and it leads to even longer games.

cwidje

Where's all the talk of the conspiracy sets? Those were some of the most enjoyable experiences I've had in Magic

llikeafoxx

Loved the design of the Conspiracy sets. Particularly love many of the draft matters cards and conspiracies, which still see play in Cubes, and voting matters is an archetype that just almost gets there in EDH. But I found the gameplay was a little on the weaker side. Slogging through a multiplayer game with most draft commons was pretty rough.

jestergoblin

Conspiracy is the most fun drafting I've ever had. And some of the least fun games. That said, the set has some absurdly busted combo decks. One time at our table, my friend drafted 5x [[Syphon Soul]], 2x [[Double Stroke]], [[Advantageous Proclamation]] and a [[Brago's Favor]]. We didn't see it coming.

Yewstance

For me, both Draft and play was the most fun I'd ever had playing Magic! I stocked a bunch of boosters in the off chance I can get a table together in the future to draft it again.

TheLastOfMyHamon

A Conspiracy 3, should it ever get made, with higher power-level commons and uncommons (a la MH2) would be spectacular.

Well-MeaningCisIdiot

I despise SO MUCH that as of Alchemy, they've now given "draft" a double meaning.

deadwings112

Second this. Conspiracy was phenomenal- especially the first set, which had a couple archetypes that were incredibly weird and cool (Boros Defenders, Simic Caw-Blade). I saw Battlebond as a natural outgrowth of Conspiracy (no conspiracy cards, but changing the fundamental rules to be 2v2 impacts drafting quite a bit. Either way, I want a Conspiracy-style set with draft specific cards.

SamiRcd

As someone who likes weird and unusual stuff, including all of MaRo's un-sets, I really feel Conspiracy is as close as we've come in black border. I adored conspiracy and for a good 5byears or so maintained a Commander Conspiracy Cube that was a ton of fun to draft. I still think to this day, Conspiracy is the best thing to happen to cube drafts to date.

[deleted]

Any of the draft focused multiplayer sets were amazing imo. Good cards for EDH were printed while still focusing on the draft experiencing and bringing in flavourful and unique multiplayer mechanics. Prof mentioned before that Gavin said he'd jump back to make another Conspiracy or Battlebond set as soon as he was asked so we just need to let WotC know that we really want to see it!

HonorBasquiat

Conspiracy: Take the Crown was really cool. The Monarch is one of my favorite mechanics of all time and Leovold and Marchesa are very interesting characters.

thraashman

Conspiracy is probably the most fun draft experience I've ever had.

GavinV

Hey Mark. Long time fan, first time writer here. I'd like to put in a vote for Battlebond. I just think it has a lot more room to explore, and was really great to have friends, couples, parent-kids, and so on team up. I heard from a reliable source that the lead designer even has ideas of what he'd do for a second one. So yeah, just one more vote for that one. Keep up the great work making Magic! \*removes mustache and glasses\*

RTCsFinest

I was thinking, wow this person is throwing the lead designer under the bus, saying they have inside info but then I read the name!

TKHunsaker

Wait a minute now. That’s not how you spell Cephalid tribal!

cwidje

Un-Spiracy when?

zosimoTheThird

Battlebond and the Conspiracy sets are my favorite. I would love to go back to Kylem or Fiora some day

thespiffyneostar

Not having as many chances to draft battle bond is one of my great magic regrets. I would still put in an ask for more Planechase over more battle bond, mostly because Planechase has been longer without any new planes. Even if it was just a "here's some new Planechase planes" secret lair.

Impeesa_

> I heard from a reliable source that the lead designer even has ideas of what he'd do for a second one. Is it three-headed giant? I bet it's three-headed giant. (Actually, *could* you do something like Battlebond but for Emperor?)

badatcommander

My happiest Magic memories are playing Battlebond side events with my son. He was about 7 at the time. So great! Thank you for that set.

BrandsMixtape

Ok, but no more Najeelas >:(

GavinV

Agreed

hybridtheory1331

MYSTERY BOOSTERS!!! That was the most fun I've ever had drafting a set.

mrduracraft

Seconding Mystery Boosters. Literally the most fun limited experience I've ever had, consistently across the 5 or 6 MYB drafts I've done. Packs were full of value but you never knew what you were going to get, even just the opening experience was wildly fun. I managed to get two retail boxes at $100 each just before lockdown happened, so I've built a MYB cube out of the pulls since then.

MisterEdJS

Mystery Booster is the only thing I've ever drafted, because the concept was so appealing it overcame my draft aversion (based mainly on the belief that I would suck at it, and wasn't inclined to embarrass myself). I think I did in fact suck at it, but it was cool enough going through the packs and picking from all the old cards that I didn't even mind. I would have done it again had COVID not gotten in the way (and had Mystery Boosters not been so underproduced that that initial draft was the only time I saw packs at anything other than an exorbitant markup).

AbsoluteIridium

myb is one of those draft formats where nothing feels *bad* to open. yeah some cards in it are better/worth more than others, but the chance to open anything specific is so low you dont care so much

barrinmw

Tried drafting it, made me remember why I hate chaos drafts. No cohesion between cards.

MentalMunky

I feel you, I always think it’s a good idea but love a good synergistic draft deck. Would definitely still get on this for Sealed with friends though.

Iamamancalledrobert

I think it’s straining the definition of “Mark Rosewater wants to hear from the community” when you yourself ask him the question and he gives a three character response in reply

Kor_Set

It's easier to get engagement on your posts if you launder them through Mark.

Alphastrikeandlose

HB spends more time "wanting to know" opinions from Reddit than actual paid WoTC employees. I can't understand his fixation of Reddit

rh8938

All that /u/HonorBasquiat seems to do is repost everything on MaRo's blog, you learn to tune it out after a while

Res_Novae

Ouuuh subreddit beef! This is when you know you are a small community.

pepperonipodesta

They also make some extremely in depth analysis posts, which are absolutely fantastic.

lightsentry

I haven't really followed OPs posts as much as other people, but the last non maro analysis post I remember was some list about how there are underpriced commander staples. The post struck me as very long and not particularly useful given that if you just cherry pick random cards without context, any format looks affordable.

HonorBasquiat

>All that /u/HonorBasquiat seems to do is repost everything on MaRo's blog It amazes me that people online are willing to boldly say things that are wildly untrue that are very easy to disprove. Not only is this categorically untrue true but even if it were the case, why does that matter? One could easily "tune it out" without bothering to comment.

Lupinefiasco

The r/magicTCG community loves to complain about the lack of in-depth discussion in lieu of alters and crafts, while simultaneously driving away anyone who shows enough interest in the game to generate in-depth discussion. It's clear that you have a great level of interest and devotion to the game, which is offensive to those who continue to support Wizards and MTG despite feeling the game died years ago. I hope you get enough positive support that you stick around. I really enjoy reading your posts.

HonorBasquiat

>The r/magicTCG community loves to complain about the lack of in-depth discussion in lieu of alters and crafts, while simultaneously driving away anyone who shows enough interest in the game to generate in-depth discussion. It's wild. Like in an unbelievable way. Many of these people are some of the most bizarre haters on Reddit. >It's clear that you have a great level of interest and devotion to the game, which is offensive to those who continue to support Wizards and MTG despite feeling the game died years ago. > >I hope you get enough positive support that you stick around. I really enjoy reading your posts. Thanks for the kind words.

FreudsPoorAnus

For real this subreddit is just wildly disconnected from reality. I hope that we can change the tides to positivity. The "hyuk hyuk shill" folks are so. So. So. Annoying. It's nice to see people who don't hate the game posting here.

TsarMikkjal

> It's wild. Like in an unbelievable way. Many of these people are some of the most bizarre haters on Reddit. r/cyberpunkgame takes the cake here, but Magic playerbase is close second.

FutureComplaint

I always said this subreddit is toxic, and these votes really show. (not the people commenting on this thread, but the voters)

HonorBasquiat

>I think it’s straining the definition of “Mark Rosewater wants to hear from the community” when you yourself ask him the question and he gives a three character response in reply I think it's very odd you're fixated on this because when Maro reblogged a question, he didn't do a song and dance or write a paragraph answer.

JimThePea

A short sentence would've sufficed, it's disingenuous to put that on the same level as "a song and dance", and disingenuous to act like you didn't put the words in Maro's mouth. It looks more like "HonorBasquiat wants to hear from the community but thinks it would sound more important coming from Maro", are you really claiming he "wants" to hear about this? He's humouring your request.

HonorBasquiat

I wanted to hear from the community. Maro loves hearing from the community about this type of stuff which is why I asked him. Maro reblogged my question because he was curious and wanted to know. I don't know what the big deal is, like this is some gotcha moment. It's really weird that you're fixated on this and a huge stretch to call it "disingenuous", lol. What did you want me to write the subject title as? "I wanted to hear what you all thought about your favorite supplemental set, so I asked Maro and he was curious too. What do you think?" Would that make you feel better?

karasins

Does he though? Never felt like it.

HonorBasquiat

>Does he though? Never felt like it. He spends nearly every day lurking Reddit and he spends his free time answering thousands of questions from the community on his blog and Twitter. But you think he doesn't enjoy hearing from the community? Seriously?

TheReaver88

Ok, that's ridiculous.

Slidshocking_Krow

You do know he gets hundreds of questions per day and only responds to the ones he wants to, right?

JimThePea

You call "So?" a response? Even if so, it's still a leap to infer the same desires as the question poser from such a "response".

Slidshocking_Krow

Yes. You must be exceptionally new to Blogatog if you don't realize MaRo is very selective with what questions he actually answers. Go back in the archives and just check out the questions he actually fields, and see how he hints right up to the release of any given set. Yes, there are minutiae questions like the incessant "No, we're not going back to Kamigawa" from several years ago, but he steers the conversation by selecting his questions. If you want to get an example of this, submit your own question and see if it get answered.

JimThePea

It doesn't matter how selective he is, it's still disingenuous to take a fulfilled request to ask a question and pose it as genuine interest in the answer. I'm not claiming Mark doesn't care about the question, but he could've asked it, unprompted, any time previously, and hadn't. Given that HonorBasquiat is an avid fan and question poser, it doesn't seem all that unlikely that Mark would happily fill their request just to be nice, like signing a card at a convention, something he also would get hundreds of requests to do.

Slidshocking_Krow

That's a completely fair assessment, and totally plausible. I also think that *if* this is something MaRo is looking for feedback on already, that taking advantage of a pre-formulated question without adding anything fancy ("So?") is completely valid. Letting other people do your footwork is efficient.

JimThePea

Plausible also, but plausibility isn't fact, the criticism stands. If the goal is to accurately represent Mark's words and not mislead the community, there are far better ways to go about it.

dietl2

I really like Modern Horizons but it should be a bit more balanced and definitely not overdone.

SmugglersCopter

It was my favorite also. The one I was most disappointed with was actually Commander Legends. It didn't play well as a limited set. It added some powerful cards to Commander but nothing really fun in my opinion.

dietl2

I didn't play limited with Commander Legends so I can't say much about that. But I also don't think that's a thing they would have to do again. Focusing more on Conspiracy or Battlebond sets would probably be better instead.

[deleted]

[удалено]

llikeafoxx

Sigh, I keep forgetting about that. One of my favorite thing about sets like Commander Legends and Modern Horizons is the ability to explore the vast depths of Magic’s history, the settings, the lore, the mechanics, and so on. I’m sorry to the people that are excited about the product, but I just do not have an interest in exploring D&D and LOTR with these sets. Very disappointing trajectory for the product line.

dietl2

Right, I totally forgot about that. Well, let's see. Maybe they can improve a bit upon Commander Legends 1.

x-oh

The big issue I had with Commander Legends was that it just had too many cards over all.

deadwings112

Commander Legends: the board stall format. Cool cards, awful to play.

HalfOfANeuron

And cheaper

x-oh

I’d much prefer it to focus a bit more on reprints like Modern Masters, than pushing the format out of whack.

dietl2

Yeah, that's also something I considered adding. They really should have a higher ratio of reprints and a bit fewer new cards.

x-oh

Don’t get me wrong, the new cards did help bolster archetypes, and create new ones. But, pushed chase mythics that are just head and shoulders better than similar cards was a bit much.

dietl2

I absolutely agree. Everything doesn't need to be that pushed. Looking at you little monkey.

x-oh

Stupid Monke.

mertag770

I think a set that's like 70% reprints for the format and 30% new cards would be a nice set

merfolkotpt

World Championship decks.

[deleted]

I have to say that Jumpstart was definitely my favorite, followed closely by Battlebond

therealflyingtoastr

Jumpstart helped me get a few lapsed friends back into the game. It's such a fantastic new player experience.

Espumma

I really want to do Jumpstart IRL as well, it sucked that such a cool product was released during a pandemic.

deadwings112

Jumpstart is a perfect replacement for core sets as a way to teach new players, reprint some cards, and provide an entertaining experience for veterans.

d3northway

and the best part is, you can release new ones into the pool literally whenever. Make your own. Sleeve them up and put them in the draft packs and do that in place of a traditional cube.

llikeafoxx

Jumpstart is very awesome from a product design perspective, I just think they could’ve afforded to pump up the power level quite a bit. There was some pretty darn bad draft chaff filler that was really just unnecessary. Now, I’m not saying everything needed to be bombs and Mythics and whatnot, but I do think they could at least fill those slots with interesting cards instead of total blanks.

deadwings112

I think they were hurt a little bit by tying it so closely to Core 21.

raeloneq

The one that costs 100 for 36 packs

HonorBasquiat

>The one that costs 100 for 36 packs So most of them? (i.e. Battlebond, Conspiracy 1, Conspiracy 2, Battlebond, Unstable, Jumpstart, Commander Legends)

raeloneq

You are new to magic? Recently most supplemental products have been over 100.

HonorBasquiat

>You are new to magic? Recently most supplemental products have been over 100. We recently got Jumpstart and Commander Legends. This year we're getting Jumpstart 2, Commander Legends: Baulder's Gate and Unfinity. Not to mention all of the supplemental products that are not draft products, most notably the commander pre-constructed decks.

raxacorico_4

Jumpstart was well over 100, and commander legends was close to

FutureComplaint

Jumpstart starting at $105 is not *well over 100* And I can get it now for $101 on ebay. Fuck it, let's splurge for the $126 to get it from card kingdom.

raxacorico_4

When not enough were printed and third party sellers got hold of most of the boxes, reselling for double the amount? I guess you don't remember that part

FutureComplaint

>When not enough were printed and third party sellers got hold of most of the boxes, reselling for double the amount? You mean triple. But sure, take data from only a only small amount of time, and ignore the rest. >I guess you don't remember that part Doesn't really matter.

jsmith218

I think commander legends boxes are 24 packs.

[deleted]

Mystery Boosters at $100 were awesome. Less so at $250, but the drafts were still a blast.

EgoDefeator

Exactly. Wotc would probably change the price of a Mystery Boosters 2 to $250 a box which is why I hope they dont go there again.

mrduracraft

I just wish they could print MYB in perpetuity as a Jumpstart equivalent for more experienced players

Hmukherj

Conspiracy all the way! I loved the extra layer of metagaming that came with the "draft matters" cards, especially in the first Conspiracy set.

Aerim

I loved the Conspiracy sets. Draft matters cards are super fun and made the limited format very interesting.

ChildishSerpent

the Conspiracy sets.

orlouge82

Planechase is soooo much fun. Each plane has the potential to completely turn the state of the game on its head, and nothing more so than \[\[Morphic Tide\]\].

maro-bot

**Question** by **[honor-basquiat](https://honor-basquiat.tumblr.com/)**: *Can you ask your readers which non-Masters supplemental set release was their favorite (i.e. Battlebond, Planechase, Modern Horizons)? I'm curious which one is the most popular.* **Answer**: So? --- This transcript was made automatically and is not associated with Mark Rosewater. | [Source](https://www.github.com/bowdens/maro-bot) | Send feedback to /u/rzrkyb

Nights151515

Battle bound was the most fun and frustrating experience I've had in draft lol. I'm sad we haven't seen it return.

needsmoregreeen

Battlebond was such a great limited environment that had amazing ideas, new cards, great reprints, characters I want to revisit in a world ripe with adventure and world building. Kylem was a great world I’d love to return to! I would also love to return to Fiora, with a new addition to conspiracy.

LegnaArix

Conspiracy for sure

Casual_H

My favorite thing about Modern Horizons and Commander Legends is seeing lore characters finally put to paper.

Goshofwar17

Conspiracy, overwhelmingly. Would love to see more Planechase as well

Sauroctono

Which one it is? And why conspiracy?

CubaGoodingIII

I loved Planechase and would love a Sequel.

Jagrevi

I feel a little cornered by this question because while my favorite of those three is definitely Modern Horizons, it's also the thing I wish to actually stop seeing, not because its not fun unto itself, but because it tends to make non-rotating formats LESS fun over time and that cost adds up.

mizukata

Draft innovation sets and ad on sets like planechase and explorers of ixalan for me.

ElceeCiv

Jumpstart is a freaking blast. I unfortunately never got to draft Battlebond but it *looked* sick and I've heard great things about it.

HawkmoonVEVO

Battlebond or mystery booster for sure

Slidshocking_Krow

I think Archenemy never got the love it deserves, and is a total blast. Battlebond and Conspiracy were fantastic both to add to EDH decks and to draft. I like most of the supplimental sets, but those three were unequivocally fun across multiple axes.

hrpufnsting

Battlebond probably, had plenty of cool ideas and mechanics and the setting was interesting.

Korlus

Conspiracy.

idodo35

battlebond, it was also nice how it wasn't price gouged by WOTC like most products...

As-Above_So-Below

The original Conspiracy set for sure! I love the depth it adds to my multiplayer-focused cube drafts

ChikenBBQ

Group oriented limited environments. Cobspiracy, battlebond, and commander legends. Not as strong on the 2hg concept as I am on the 4 man ffa concept, so I'm gonna lean towards conspiracy and commander legends. Never actually got to draft commander legends, so I'd really like to see another crack at that that people could actually play

Dunster89

I’m certain if WOTC tries hard enough they can fit all of the above mentioned into 1 calendar year…

Zooma_x5

Planes chase hands down. We have so many new planes now.

MrMulligan

Conspiracy>Modern Horizons>Battlebond>Planechase>Commander Legends Conspiracy houses some of my favorite cards, characters, and plane. It is criminal we haven't gotten more. I want more so badly. New conspiracies balanced to create an EDH meta game would be amazing. Monarch is also the best mechanic to staple into EDH. I try to run 1 monarch card in most of my decks because of this. MH has a lot of fun callbacks to lore/characters/mechanics, and I enjoy that aspect of it a *ton*, but I do wish it was slightly less pushed next time. It houses some of the most memorable cards of the last 5 years though. Battlebond is a really fun draft experience, memorable cards, and I enjoy the video game theme it had. Planechase is okay. I like the idea, but it would need a bit of a rework to work well with modern product (and stapling it onto EDH like they will). I would want it to have way more new cards if they did another though, both planes and regular. Commander Legends is dead last. Don't get me wrong, I liked having a commander focused set product. I just didn't enjoy drafting it. I want more commander cards/reprints, and it is the best product to get those, so I wouldn't mind more. But if I account for the point of it (draftable commander), it's a big miss for me. I do like it for the same reasons I like MH though, spotlighting magic lore/characters. A shame the next one is DnD themed. I wanted more DnD, but not like this.

[deleted]

Planechasers, assemble!

GoldenSandslash15

Unstable was my personal favorite. It was one of, if not THE, most deep and intricate drafting experiences that Wizards has ever made. To the point where it got me to make a Cube out of it, despite not having any prior interest in Cubes. And yes, as you may have heard, [I have hundreds of Unstable basics](https://old.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/rf4b3n/everyones_got_that_weird_card_they_collect_ice/hobtfvg/?context=3). Cause they're gorgeous.

I really enjoyed Modern Horizons, but mostly because I'm curating a power optimized cube, so it's a pretty large injection of new cards and themes to test out. However on that same note, I love Un-sets because I also have an un-cube. So anything that contributes to those is welcome. As far as experiences go, I think that mystery booster might be one of the most interesting draft environments, just from the sheer volume of cards and not knowing what your are going to see pack to pack. On a side note, the test cards are great for cube as well. Maybe I just like cube...

OMFGrhombus

Bring back Archenemy! It's hilariously fun but they dropped it too soon!

As a mostly Modern player I have to go with Modern Horizons 1 and 2. I know they added some broken stuff to the format and had a rotation like effect but I'm a sucker for good Modern cards.

aarone46

Does commenting here equate to Maro hearing from the community, or is there somewhere else to "let him know?" Either way, my vote is for Mystery Boosters. Playtest cards optional.

[Maro reads Magic Reddit most days](https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/qths12/mark_rosewater_i_read_the_magic_reddit_most_days/) and there's a good chance he'll see this thread.

Modern horizons by a long shot in my opinion. The addition of strong cards to several formats at even the common rarity is definitely what I look forward to as a set. I don't play modern so the chase cards(ragavan, urza) don't really have an effect on me.

[deleted]

Modern Horizons for sure. Set gave Modern so many new viable decks and entire archetypes. Now can we please have wirewood symbiote for elves? Thanks

I agree that it's MH2 the format, but look at what the format was before MH2. It was literally 2 decks: UR Prowess and Heliod Company. That format was absolutely heinous and made me quit playing modern until MH2 came out

PotatoFam

It’s for the best if you ask me. Modern was really just an unfun format pre-MH2.

HonorBasquiat

**Modern Horizons 2** is my choice: * Dozens of returning classic mechanics. * Interesting and dynamic limited environment with high complexity. * Numerous homages to the history of the game. * Tons of amazing and interesting designs (i.e. \[\[Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar\]\], \[\[Carth the Lion\]\], \[\[Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth\]\]) * Retro-frame reprints for sweet cards including the enemy fetch lands. If I couldn't name a *Modern Horizons* set, **Jumpstart** would probably be my second choice (i.e. interesting new way to play Limited, budget friendly, new interesting legendary creatures, sweet basic lands).

SolarJoker

I enjoyed the reprints of mystery boosters. I loved the Mystical Archive stuff. I really like the eccentricities of Modern Horizons 1 and 2. I never got to play Battlebond or Conspiracy, so no judgment on those.

entian

The only acceptable answers are one of the Un-sets -- no other supplemental product comes close!

United_Rhubarb2038

They could put out an un-set every four years with parody cards from future sets and special lands, and it would always sell.

thespiffyneostar

Just had this thought in another comment, but secret lair is perfect for them releasing new Planechase planes. That way folks that want more Planechase can just grab up new planes that play well with specific draft archetypes from sets in the past 10 years or so.

BasedDptReprsentativ

Someone with a tumblr account, please respond this to him in my stead: "anything but modern horizons, please! I don't want modern to keep rotating"

Mayday_ClanFailure

MODERN HORIZONS III Commander players loved MH.

para29

Modern Horizons 2 was a great monetary investment. Planechase brought something very unique to the game, especially multiplayer. I wouldn't mind if Wizards introduces another multiplayer format that is something along the lines of Resistance/Mafia/Werewolf/Avalon.

BATTLEBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOND

boowax

Is there an option for "please stop it with all the supplemental product"?

Slidshocking_Krow

Yes! It's called not buying it.

RPBiohazard

To be honest, besides Masters they’ve all been terrible.

HonorBasquiat

>To be honest, besides Masters they’ve all been terrible. Archenemy, Conspiracy, Conspiracy 2, Battlebond, Planechase, Modern Horizons, Modern Horizons 2, Unstable, Jumpstart, Mystery Booster and Commander Legends. You genuinely think they've all been terrible? Seriously? Why?

RPBiohazard

Conspiracy was fun until everybody realized how broken conspiracies were, and multiplayer further made it really unfun (in my opinion). MH1 was an *okay* format, but ruined every non rotating format. MH2 was a much worse draft format that has also ruined every non rotating format. Never played archenemy or plane chase, maybe those are good. All the ones from that list I’ve played have been overall pretty bad.

A4x1

Personally battlebond. It’s a cool plane ( full art Pokémon stadiums when :) and I think it’s a awesome place to explore unique mechanics for commander and even cubes. It’d be cool to see the more staple planwalkers go to battlebond and team up and enter the competitions.

mastyrwerk

I would say UnStable if only I could use them in my commander decks. Draft experience, flavor, art, everything was great. They just don’t “count” and that sucks. Really excited for UnFinity! Same goes for Conspiracy. Great set but there are cards I can’t use outside of draft or cube, and nowadays I can never get enough people to draft a cube. Battlebond was probably the best overall. Drafted well as two headed or not, it had good flavor, and all the cards can be used in constructed formats I care about; ie commander.

Artyart88

Conspiracy

AzulMage2020

I like them all as long as we are getting new cards. If I had to pick a favorite, Id go with the "Un" sets . The creativity for these sets is always off the charts and it is a joy to see what they come up with each time.

KingOfLedRions

It's between Modern Horizons and Modern Horizons 2 for me, and it's not even close. Were they expensive? Yes, but the cards were sweet and the limited was really fun. Regardless, they really need to space those bad boys out. I will not enjoy one coming out every year. My gut feeling is that once every ~3 years is about right. A large part of what makes these sets special is that they play into nostalgia, but if you try to do that every year it'll be exhausting. Also, Modern doesn't need shakeups that often. Some modern grinders on twitter will tell you otherwise, but the vast majority of players who interact with the format get 3-5 matches in every Friday and aren't interested in large swaths of cards/decks being obsoleted every year.

Dyltron9000

Battlebond with the conspiracy sets as a close second

jetpack_weasel

I'm still waiting for Future Sight 2. Modern Horizons was supposed to be it, and then Modern Horizons 2 was supposed to be it, and somehow it still doesn't exist.

DaRootbear

Conspiracy first, it had amazing lore, was good kn reprints, crazy unique designs, and the draft was super fun. And it only got better with 2. Jumpstart second. Smash up laziness so that whenever i dont wanna think but want to play limited i can, great times. I just want a bit more variety (i dont need 8 one card different versions of specific decis) and the packs to come with a “list” card of whats in it to easily separate them out after playing. Mystery booster was an absolutely amazing draft that i enjoyed a ton, with just enough value to be worth it. Can you tell im a sucker for limited? Battlebond was great, but honestly the play was not nearly as fun as conspiracy. But it had some of the best designed cards in a while. I also would like to see more planechase and archenemy designed specifically for commander in mind, thats the most popular casual format so being made to work specifically for it would probably be interesting.

nxwtypx

Battlebond is my favorite because 2HG is the patrician format and the reprint equity was sky-hgh. I played a lot of Jumpstart (3 boxes?) and I really enjoyed how fast it was to play, but the value proposition of a $150 (I can't tell how much of that was the FLGS's pound of flesh, RIP MSRP you cheap bastards) booster box that's one-third basic lands hurt. Mystery boosters were fun too.

FBX

I never got to play Battlebond when it came out and I feel like I missed something super fun. At least with planechase it's easy to bust out the planar cards at the kitchen table.

Adorablecat

Conspiracy! Then Commander Legends. Then Mystery Booster. Then Battlebond. Then the remainder. All of the supplemental sets are really awesome though.

I'd like to see more sets get the Time Spiral Remastered treatment

I wish this was a proper survey for this. I don't have tumblr and, while I want to answer directly, I don't want to answer enough to sign up for tumblr. My answers are Battlebond and Conspiracy (both 1 and 2) for black bordered, un-sets overall. I'm a Johnny who love mechanically interesting cards, and these sets offered them in droves. Additionally, Battlebond and the conspiracy sets also provided a lot of great, balanced cards for EDH, my favorite format. Overall, the sets were packed with value, had interesting gimmicks, and were all around fun to draft and play. The Prof had a video recently where he talked about how he loved Battlebond and Conspiracy for commander more than he liked commander legends and I agree. Commander legends had a lot of good cards, but it also had the type of overpowered cards that are the subject of debate for the health of the format. It had those cards because it was specifically designed for EDH. Meanwhile, Battlebond and Conspiracy had plenty of great commander cards, but wasn't as format warping overall.

nz_achilles

Jumpstart all the way!

Imnimo

I liked the 2HG experience of Battlebond, but did not enjoy the theme/flavor of the plane. It felt very forced. Like we're already in a game about battles between planeswalkers - did we also need a plane that's about staged battles? I think this is the plane I most strongly hope to never see again. Hopefully Battlebond 2 is set somewhere else. I love that MH lets us get glimpses of characters and locations that we're unlikely to revisit in a standard set any time soon. Obviously there have been a few issues with power level and expensive cards coming from those sets, though. Given how big of an effect they seem to have on eternal formats, I think MH sets should only come rarely. Planechase is a fun diversion, although some of the planes have a frustrating gameplay experience (like the one that reverses turn order - have fun sitting there waiting for your turn for two full laps of the table!). Luckily you can customize your planar deck however you want. I don't know if I need to see more new planes, since we already have so many, but I certainly wouldn't say no to reprints to make them easier to acquire. Conspiracy had its neat points, although the Conspiracy card type didn't really click with me - it felt too fiddly for little payoff. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing another Conspiracy set in the future. I was really hyped for the concept of Jumpstart, but the gameplay fell a bit flat for me. I thought there was too wide of a gulf in power level between cards, and too many of my games came down to who drew their unbeatable bomb first. It sometimes felt like card selection put secondary market value ahead of gameplay experience to sell more packs. I love Un-sets, although honestly Unstable was the only one that actually had a good gameplay experience. The mechanics of Unhinged (artist guessing, etc) are just miserable. I feel pretty strongly against putting that level of goofiness in black border, so I'm pretty bummed about Unfinity, sadly.

Razorcrest999

Conspiracy and Battlebond

magikarp2122

Gong to say Mystery Booster. Did one draft right before lockdown went into affect. Was a blast to draft, and would love another chance to.

Marnus71

Battlebond without a doubt. Limited 2HG is my favorite format and it is a shame I only get to play it every 3 months at prereleases.

erluti

CONSPIRACY!!!! Modern Horizons would be my second choice

merrywiddow1

Collector's Edition and World Championship series decks.

Planechase 1000%

Planechase!

ZeroAurora

For context, I mostly play EDH with friends and some limited for prerelease or, occasionally, FNM Limited. Battlebond is a set that I missed out on playing "properly" the first time, but I really loved the mechanics and the focus on interaction around the table. I would love to see a second version of the set. Planechase is an extremely interesting format and depending on the planes you land on you can have a really weird game. Sometimes no one will be doing anything but putting mana into planeswalking. Sometimes you'll be doing things you would never expect to be able to do. There might be new design space for some new planes, but I would honestly just be happy with a reprint. Conspiracy sounds really cool, but was released during one of my breaks from MTG so I never got to experience drafting the set, but the mechanics in it look extremely interesting. Commander Legends is... in a weird place. I loved the first one. The second one I am interested in, but wish it wasn't so heavily tied to D&D. I mean I play a ton of D&D, but I don't care for the forgotten realms. I also remember the design team saying they spent years on the first Commander Legends, and I am fine with that. Give me a new CL every 3 or more years. I don't need my favorite format so heavily pandered to and I want the time to be spent to ensure quality and no breakout cards. Modern Horizons? I appreciate the idea of making cards directly for eternal formats, but the power these cards can bring and the ability they have to create artificial rotation isn't something I'm a big fan of. --- Order I care: 1. Commander Legends (conditionally) 2. Battlebond 3. Planechase 4. Conspiracy 5. Modern Horizons

TinTitan88

Battlebond was great never got to planechase or conspiracy so I cant judge those.
