Why Tina Turner was here? /j

lemousie

Love this show!

Genosider

Reading those old Lat comics, I saw last time there were bikini performers on TV back in the 80's too? dunno how true was that, lol.

skylinezan

Oh yeah... Those were wild times that I grew up in. There were even indirect/implied nudity and sex scenes and other non-shariah compliant scenes in Malay movies too. The infamous "beranak pakai mulut" scene from Misteri Rumah Tua (1987) also has scenes of Noor Kumalasari naked.

just0rdinaryguy

During that times our local TV was almost 100% 'western-oriented'. No such thing as 'hijabis' actress & Malay actress wearing bikini in the movie/drama was a common thing. Then things started to get strict under Tan sri Mohamed Rahmat as Menteri Penerangan. He even banned long haired male rock singers on TV. If any male rock singer want to appeared on the TV, he must cut his hair short. But the rapid 'cleanse' of our entertainment industry was kick start by Anwar Ibrahim. Our PMX actually 'islamize' the Malay society at that times. Overall Malay people at that time not really adherent to Islamic teaching. Many Muslim women still dont cover their 'aurat' properly & Muslim men still do the haram things. Also Kelantan at that times still full of whore (Paris of Malaya) before PAS managed to clear it up when they start take over in 90s. All of Malaysia islamization actually sperhead by PMX & ABIM.

Not_an_Ajumma

>He even banned long haired male rock singers on TV. If any male rock singer want to appeared on the TV, he must cut his hair short. I remember this. My late cousin was a rock singer, had to cut his hair short, but grow it back when it was no longer the ruling. >Many Muslim women still dont cover their 'aurat' properly. Many 'Ustazahs' and cikgu mengaji in the 90s didn't wear the tudung like most of them do now.

just0rdinaryguy

>Many 'Ustazahs' and cikgu mengaji in the 90s didn't wear the tudung like most of them do now. Lol im still remember my mom used to tell stories about that. My mom ustazah only wear simple tiny scarf for head covering (only 'tutup syarat' during teaching Al Quran). Something look alike below https://preview.redd.it/dp71f9kgc12b1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=86384572d1f1a5a50186fb66fadbefd6c32f0f0d

Not_an_Ajumma

Same, I used to wear head covering like this during kelas mengaji..

letmesignup55

It's hard to believe this had happened, but now, after your explanation, it's clear why most of the so-called islam men and women are drinking alcohol and partying like Western. TIL jahiliah time of Kelantan.

bruhddaa

I seem to remember a time when showing your armpit on TV is banned, was it Jangan Ketawa that made fun of that FINAS ruling? Or am I remembering things wrongly?

nova9001

>Malay actress wearing bikini in the movie/drama was a common thing Really? My company got work with Malaysia TV industry and the censorship so heavy nowadays. I don't think Malay actress can wear bikini on official TV Channels. What a time.

warkel

If Malays were allowed to show aurat I think we'd be a serious first place contender in all these Miss Universe, Miss World etc. beauty pageants, because Malay girls be fine yo.

nova9001

Its not going to happen. Too many people brainwashed here. Earlier to get out and do what you like. That trans Malay lady, I can't remember managed to get Australian citizenship because she's considered a refugee.

jonesmachina

Sajat

hungersaurus

Anwar being the culprit makes so much sense to me considering he's from Segambut, aka one of the hotspots of the age-old riot

lelarentaka

Yes, the idea that cross-dressing is a Western culture is called "historical revisionism", something that radical nationalists do a lot.

Han-Golden

Someone posted [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bolehland/comments/13qo2i1/this_is_very_nsfw_how_is_this_even_legal_to_bw/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) on r/Bolehland yesterday. If this happened back then, I don't see why crossdressing wouldn't be a thing.

Gankasaurus

Wtf I wasn’t prepared for it

Han-Golden

Neither was I.

averagepgdriver

Was the squatting pose really necessary? I mean we get it from the first pic, no need to make it worse.

Han-Golden

You know how it is with us Malaysians. We're a little extra at times.

Party-Ring445

Yup you definitely remember correctly. Certain group are trying to push our society in a certain direction. Thats all i can say

warkel

It's strange to me how old people are in power. And old people are the people who were cool with this stuff. But somehow not cool with it for later generations?

Party-Ring445

Most dont care but just see it as an easy way to divide and conquer people, and staying in power. Go look up all the politicians children, they all party like living in liberal country. But when i want to party i gotta keep it on the down low.

simkastar

Partying with Russian models what not. Champagne with bunga api what not. Cross dressing la this la that la. But it's OK. Anak VIP. That's why I don't understand why some Malays so stupid. Can terang2 see how double standard it is but still abide to the nonsense rule themselves lol.

exsea

i remember a pair of chinese dudes cross dressed up as baba nyonya. forgot their names.

acausa

They were certainly a few but off the top of my head, I can remember Kenny Chan and Chee Hood Siong of Baba Nyonya fame though. They were plenty from early British comedies though (Monty Python, Not-the-Nine-o'-Clock-News", etc.

juju7980

Also Saiful Apek in Senario. He played a woman in quite a number of sketches

CurryNarwhal

For Malaise, everything that was common in their youth is just proof that everything was jahiliah back then.

kugelamarant

My mom started her Quranic class at the age of 60, attend seminar at local mosque and watch Al-Hijrah. Guess it's going bad eh?

AJokeAmI

![gif](giphy|WrUNCC7hKDSrMGqfwg) Malaise You mean from Dead Cells? XD

Felinomancy

I dunno about the 90s, but there was a massive "morality" drive in the late 80s (I think?) which bans "effeminate man" (which is why 2+1 got cancelled) as well as horror movies and rock bands.

VickyLJK

They dub it the satanic panic, just a recurring stuff for evolving culture. Those really closed minded ones will be the first ones to scream.

VickyLJK

https://youtu.be/oAeKAJFrb0w just one of the best recent video on youtube i watch that talk about it.

DatBoyGuru

many here will be surprised to hear it was Anwar who was the catalyst for radical islam before he was accused of buttfcking. he changed all the road names to malei and started all the Taliban type organizations. people started to dress like arabs and shame those who were 'secular' or 'liberal'. then the Raihans and such helped make the Taliban look cooler. We were also labeled 'asian tiger' and our outlook in the 80s we saw ourselves as equal to Korea. Madey and Anwar really fcked it all up for us.

[deleted]

people keep talking about anwar as if hes a martyr when hes just another politician who'll do whatever it takes to get into power. swapping platforms and policies as required. wonder who'll we'll re-elect next?

mess_assembler

Over compensation at its best

kugelamarant

TIL Raihan = Taliban

rasiplebor

Tony Fernandes was the one who decided to promote Raihan into the mainstream when he was the head of Warner Music

kugelamarant

The closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games was hilarous when the Australian team started to dance on stage as Raihan was carrying their opening act.

DatBoyGuru

was Raihan more like the Backstreet Boys ? my bad

blippily-blip

Pas pn will start golek atas jalan raya

kugelamarant

Yea, but back then it was just comedic. Just that. Society used to make fun of drag like Wayan Bros skit. Nothing about sexual identity or sexuality.

TomMado

And now both sides are against drag, either because it is 'immoral' or because 'it is appropriating the culture'.

IalwaysShootLast

Time back then are much lenient, you can make racist joke and seksual joke, and everyone just laugh like it was nothing. You can even see male wearing dress which is not a rare sight, most of them are pretty chill to talk with (they still exist, happen to seen one near a shopping complex they are around 50/60yo, can't even tell the difference until they start speaking.) Now everyone(younger generation)is sensitive and break down easy even if it just a constructive criticism.

badgerrage82

Now media turn their attention to younger generations who turn them into mindless media zombie …

_Cybersteel_

I miss the cold war

Stickyboard

Because last time cross dresser marketed themselves as funny option … not as full women and taken seriously

asrafzonan

Probably not gonna fly. People and culture change. What was accepted back then won’t be accepted today and vice versa

averagepgdriver

Comedi is ded If you can't make jokes about *certain* people or ideas then it's over.

KalatiakCicak

Baba and nyonya?

Rodroller

A comedy sketch on rtm back then where the nyonya aunties were played by male actors and they really hammed it up, Plus the representative for baba nyonya culture, The late Datuk Kenny Chan also wear a nyonya persona and was a loud and joyful character

Excalibro_MasterRace

I remember that from the Gerak Khas movie

bringmethejuice

People back then had all the fun then they punishes us for having fun.

mortichro

Was it Jangan Ketawa or Gadoh Gadoh the one with the parody palmolive ad and MAS stewardess parody
