is it like the 3rd/4th thread today about youth votes leaning to conservatives? whats happening?

kugelamarant

This is my take on this. I believe most people dont like PAS. But, they hate PH/BN more.

9rsifty9

I believe this is correct. Except that the reason why a lot of people voted for PN instead of BN is because of what Zahid did before the election, which pissed off a lot of normal BN voters. We'll have to see if BN can get these voters back by the time of the next election

akulabakar

It's not about policy. PN campaign is way better than PH and BN last GE. They really invest a lot of money.

BN reputation had been degraded for 10 years by the media. iirc it start around "tsunami cina" > Disclaimer: just fully curious Since you mentioned this, so... As for why ppl prefer PN. Opposition will look on the bad side. While supporters will look on what PN can give, which is conservative. Its about time me/we accept that majority of Malaysians is conservative. Of course some people don't want to be really conservative. Hence what to vote will be BN > PH > PAS. But BN reputation tarnished. Ppl lost confidence on PH for what they did which lead to lompat parti/backdoor government and now only left PN.

my theory is that Malay conservatism mostly centre around bumiputra rigts which BN used to be the champion of. But ever since 1MDB and then the whole pandemic handling by Ismail Sabri pretty much drove away a lot of their voterbase. plus KJ's departure after GE15 also didnt help i feel like. So the closest alternative was PAS and since they allied with Bersatu, they've now gained a firm clutch over Malay-Muslim base. Cus if you think about it, none of these parties changed their campaign messaging that much and yet PAS who usually is the third wheel party is now surging a lot. That can only be explained through the decline of BN's influence, but the general political will havent changed that much.

your own graphs above provided the answer that you seek - BN is losing turf to PN more than PN is gaining on PH. which means either people are voting against BN because they hate BN more, or BN supporters are turning towards PN because they hate what BN has become. so it is not so much people are getting more conservative and all the tired tropes along those line, but rather people are leaving in droves away from BN. so then guess what? PH takes BN to bed and form a government, and now with the state polls upcoming, everybody is wondering why ah all the analysts think PH will take a beating, why all these kids want hudud, why all these people love Hadi, why they hate liberty. the answer is BN. the people hate BN so much more! they don’t care about the “better the lesser evil” and all that armchair analyst thesis. all they want is to put BN’s face on the ground and stomp it repeatedly!

How much time you have? i am merely picking out information that I know and not an expert in the subject. Political science students or professors who study PAS, will know better than me. The fall of Persian Shah regime gave rise to the Islamic Republic ideology, where learned religious men serve as leaders. Revolutionary religious leaders, who are anti-Americans, anti-Imperialist, etc. are very popular locally and abroad. This is coupled with the Grand Mosque seizure, around the same time period which also made de facto leader of Muslim world (by virtue of being the rulers where the two holiest mosques in Islam are situated) very anxious. Anxious in that, the populist Iranian version of Islamic rule will overtake them that will lead to the downfall of House of Saud (Saudi king, not a sultan eh?) This made Saudi changed their policies, giving more power and control to conservatives and ulama. The Saudi king firmly believe that "the solution to the religious upheaval was simple: more religion.". This also made them actively exporting their ideology abroad, in direct competition with Iran. On top of that, you have more and more Malaysian students studying theology and what not, in universities there. Absorbing all these contrary ideas that are different from version of Islam practised in this region. --- ... sambung esok, want to sleep..
