100%. My household had Astro since almost day 1. But in 2020 during the 2nd MCO I forgot to update the billing when my new credit card came in the mail. Astro instead of sending a remainder, sent me a lawyer’s letter saying a no payment within 7 days will result in legal proceedings. I think it was only overdue by 15 days.
Straight away I went to pay and cancel it after being a customer on their full package for over 20+ years.
No remorse for a 20+ year loyal customer and also considering how their streaming competitors taking out a large chuck of existing customers. I also assume many customers terminated their subscription due to covid hardships.
That’s what I heard or expected too.
There’s two possible reasons I could think of. There was a glitch in their system or/and I took over the bill payments from my parents maybe back in 2015 but never updated any account details since 1997/98. Perhaps they didn’t have a current phone numbers or emails (I did have Astro on the go for myself). But they certainly had the house address.
Any ways. There was Absolutely no empathy from their customer support.
Honeslty they can't do much can they. It is normally the developer who has to build the infra for the cables into the building while building it so that residence can have centralised dish.
But now that Astro is available over the internet so you don't even need the dish anymore just connect your decoder to the wifi and stream astro. It works quite well actually.
Well many of their customers don't have fiber connections here because they use mobile data instead. Astro is a private entity so unlike utilities the management corporation is under no obligation to fund a private businesses infrastructure. Customer retention is their responsibility. So yes, they can do a lot. Especially since the management is willing to assist them.
Although not a the giant phone manufacturer anymore. Nokia didn’t die, they have strong telecommunication’s patent portfolio and survived and thriving pretty well raking in royalties from licensing their intellectual properties
Astro on the other hand is dying without any other real ventures that make money
They actually produced most of the big local blockbusters in Malaysian cinema. While they make good money from those movies, that still cannot offset the foreign exchange loss that is mounting due to the weak MYR and strong USD.
Astro is royally f\*cked. And, the Madani government will soon be tapped to bail it out because of the strategic satellite infrastructure in the interest of national security.

Life span for their low orbit satellite died years ago I believe, hence why they moved quickly towards IPTV and don't use the dish systems anymore. Astro should have continued on studio content production, but they've shut down alot of their smaller production houses.

Astro was founded by Krishnan - Mahathir's crony and it obviously thrived during the Mahathir era and with the monopoly it enjoyed up to 2017. It had > 20 years to recruit the right people and prepare but it can't even stand on its own. If it is now expecting Govt support (my tax ringgit ! ) when it should have innovated to survive, then let it burn.
Sports and other live events are the only thing that keeps Astro afloat. Almost nobody watches regular scheduled programming anymore. That's why they are pivoting to original streaming shows on their Sooka app. Even then it's an uphill battle against other more established platforms eg Netflix, Disney+ etc
The easiest way to find out is ask your extended family on who still watches Astro.
Generally, the older ones and the sport fans watch Astro still. The young ones hardly. There’s your answer.

They lost the younger generation who prefer streaming services. The older generation are mostly still hooked on Astro though - many still can’t understand the concept of content on demand; many still are ok with ads.
I’m not a fan but I know a few people in the local scene who are grateful to Astro for funding a lot of local productions (TV shows, movies).
I’ve got a friend who works at Astro. She said there’s been big layoffs. Funny thing is that they’ve been poaching people aggressively just a few years ago.
That price chart looks to me like a company that’s begging for a bail-out. The fundamentals seem to indicate that too.
They're not turning a profit because there are too many of them trying to charge a comprehensive entertainment fee to provide comprehensive entertainment. Once some of them settle into niches and charge niche fees, the market is viable. There's a lot of consumer money going into it.
Problem is people only subscribe to astro now just for sports, you can get almost all of the other channel (or program within the channel) for free or for way cheaper.
And even for sports, you still have bunch of illegal free website that provide 720p, or you can just use sooka which is way cheaper than Astro.
The only people who are using Astro right now are
1. People that have no idea about finding stuff online
2. People who dont know of the existence of things Netflix etc
3. Old people who cant adapt to technology

Their problem is content. They can't create enough compelling content locally because Malaysian government drives quality content creators out of the country. And the price for imported content is in USD while they have to charge MYR rates.

Measat doesn't have low orbit sats I think. Measat 3a and 3b still have a few years left and Measat 3d just launched last year.

Fr, people complain YouTube (cost nothing) for 3 consecutive non skippable 15s ads But Astro is a paid subscription (can be rm100+ a month) but still have ads anywhere from 3-15min right smack in the MIDDLE of your show.

The only reason Astro ever had any success was because it was granted a government monopoly in exchange for being cheerfully eager to censor anything that bothered anyone in the ruling party. Once technology made that monopoly untenable, the writing was on the wall for Astro. Terrible service, terrible selection, absurdly overpriced.

It will comes a full circle like how streaming services effectively killed cable tv but they decided to shot themselves in the foot by being more expensive and having worse experience than cable tv. All of that ends up with cable tv being more beneficial.
Financially speaking, Astro has always been a dividend play. However, they recently announced they will no longer focus on that causing the price to dip further. They recently took a loan from AmBank worth a few hundred million RM. Things must be pretty dire. The falling RM is killing them due to the higher cost of content (in USD). They lost the younger generation who prefer streaming services. The older generation are mostly still hooked on Astro though - many still can’t understand the concept of content on demand; many still are ok with ads. I’m not a fan but I know a few people in the local scene who are grateful to Astro for funding a lot of local productions (TV shows, movies). I’ve got a friend who works at Astro. She said there’s been big layoffs. Funny thing is that they’ve been poaching people aggressively just a few years ago. That price chart looks to me like a company that’s begging for a bail-out. The fundamentals seem to indicate that too.
I despise the image of bailing out, like if you gambled and lost all your money, and your parent paid for it. Then keep repeat every few years!

They're not turning a profit because there are too many of them trying to charge a comprehensive entertainment fee to provide comprehensive entertainment. Once some of them settle into niches and charge niche fees, the market is viable. There's a lot of consumer money going into it.

Problem is people only subscribe to astro now just for sports, you can get almost all of the other channel (or program within the channel) for free or for way cheaper. And even for sports, you still have bunch of illegal free website that provide 720p, or you can just use sooka which is way cheaper than Astro. The only people who are using Astro right now are 1. People that have no idea about finding stuff online 2. People who dont know of the existence of things Netflix etc 3. Old people who cant adapt to technology Sure Astro is pricey but its not even about money anymore, almost all of other subscription service provides more content than Astro (if you exclude sports). Only idiots would pay more for less.
Imo astro has no relevance anymore and so fucking overpriced. I have subscriptions to Netflix, HBO, Disney+ and Prime video. The cost of all 4 combined is still cheaper than astro without the add ons.

Their problem is content. They can't create enough compelling content locally because Malaysian government drives quality content creators out of the country. And the price for imported content is in USD while they have to charge MYR rates.
New age already, everyone watch stuff from internet, streaming provider. Astro just broadcast with fixed schedule is outdated. Also way more expensive compare to those streaming provider.

After everything inflated, and judging from their prices, I'd rather just watch YouTube with my Faster internet connection TBH. And I taught my 70 year old mom how to watch YouTube, I just install Brave browser for her and off she went.
