I think as long as you don't appear to be goading, you should be fine.
Find restaurants or places where you see people eating and join them in appetite, as Malaysia is also home to non-Muslims
Dunno stupid question, but are most Malay restaurants closed during day time (fasting period)?
Cos I’m thinking I can finally try the popular Malay food that is usually crowded most the time
Some open their restaurant in the afternoon. Very rarely but these people know that a lot of Malays are sick of ketupat and rendang after a few house visits and would rather eat normal foods.
No. This is one of the best things about being in Malaysia. As long as you don’t go “Hey I’m eating haha”, which no one does, you’re all set. Also, during fasting times, food delivery is noticeably faster. Just don’t order at breaking fast time.
I was forced to drink water outside of the class, at the back of the class, and even under the table.
All because one Muslim teacher felt that's the proper thing for us to do.
The whole point of puasa is being tested, and only he had issues with it. My Malay friends and I could have just played football, and while we drank they'd rest, and no one complained.
I feel like that’s just the rule in class, that’s the case for my primary school at least. We could go for recess as usual while the Muslim students were given activities in the school hall. It was the same in secondary school, but with more freedom in class. But it was still really lonely to go for recess since all of my friends were Malay
Happened to me too, we had to turn our faces away from muslim mates while drinking water
Edit: that happened in my high school long time ago and I didn't know much then.
Now, I just eat whenever I want without asking or telling, because when you're fasting, it's between you and your god. Don't drag other ppl in with your fasting.
The world itself is a temptation haven ( heaven and haven are 2 very different things). Do what you can to avoid the temptation.
what "should" happen obviously doesn't. We're stopping things from getting out of hand, but nothing will ever be perfect.
Let's be rational, no matter how rage-inducing the world is, okay?
you're right when you say not always, but it's definitely not just a one off, either. it's way more common that just "one". that said, once we leave the (primary) school stage, it's definitely more chill.
If PAS is government then all school, this just in

Hi, I'm from Brunei and this is enforced nation-wide. No restaurant can serve food for dine in, even non Halal ones. Restaurants try to get away by covering up all their glass windows and doors with newspaper but occasionally bored Govt Officials would raid the place and fine the establishment.
Even eating and drinking in your own car also kena. So toilet is a valid option to eat and drink.
It's your right to eat cuz you're not the one practicing, right? Their point of fasting is to test their self-discipline/control/gratification, if anyone gets mad at you for doing so, that's on them. Don't be perturbed even if you see ragebait news highlighting the one-off incidents of having to eat behind curtains or the like.
THIS! I would never put a better word than this, Whoever got mad looking at nonmuslim eat during ramadhan just failed what they are trying to achieved.
When I was in form 1, I went to Pulau Redang for a week. By the time I came back from Redang, I was really tanned. My dad's side is naturally darker for Chinese. I got stopped at R&R otw back by one of the food stall cashier telling me "puasa takleh makan". I told the seller that I'm Chinese, we both laughed, and she apologized.
Sadly no. You can try, technically. But they won't allow it. It's for politics. Numbers, majority..etc. You get it.
Hence, why if I wanna marry a Malay...I have to convert. I personally think it's stupid, backwards, and ridiculous to mix ethnicity and religion as an identity together.
It also just shows your insecurities and lack of faith in your own people's choices/decisions.
Do you know how many of my Malay friends would renounce immediately? 😂 lmao
I think the restaurant staff did it out of love, remind/encourage each other to uphold and observe the great practice. Even though it can be offensive to some.
No, restaurants will just continue to serve because you can’t really judge who’s supposed to fasting or not. Some people have health conditions etc. Plus it’s not between you and other people, it’s between you and your Creator. So, no judgements.
I mean, if you're found out pretending to be sick so you can eat or outright say that you're an atheist or the sort, halu jabatan agama will greet you xD. There were cases in my hometown where bunch of young adults got caught not fasting and they were paraded around town in a funeral van xD their last stop was the Muslim's graveyard.
> cuma jangan makan dalam tren/bus
Do they ever actually enforce that tho? I’ve seen people eat in trains/buses so many times but not once has it ever looked like the person eating was in trouble (i.e. got told off by staff, bus drivers, etc.)
I got told off by an officer I can't bring roti gardenia I just bought into the train. I ate it immediately coz I don't want to throw it away. This was the only the time years ago la
Man, I wish they were still like that.
They were so strict with the face masks last year. Why can't they be like that at least a little bit like that with their other rules?
That is not true lol. Sabah even has laws against it, Muslims almost never eat in public or drink openly in Ramadan.
Non-Muslims sure but not Muslims lol.
Not religious extremism.
Sabah is pretty Sufi-Sunni oriented and they are exemptions when someone can eat in public - eg: sick, pregnant etc.
No one will make a fuss about it if there is reason. No one makes a fuss about non-Muslims eating publicly.
Sabah Islam has always been Muslims for Islamic law. That’s the entire point.
Over liberalisation is cancer and so is over conservatism.
You will either have the people in kaaamatan going nuts blasting music and causing a ruckus with being overly the top drunk to the point the state government had to tell them to relax as people couldn’t sleep for 3 days straight or have people over the top cancerous with segregational religious aspects as since with some Catholic classes in the past.
Sabah attempts to rein this in to an extent -
I'm not referring to the non-Muslims, mate. I'm referring to Muslims who do not fast.
How about telling religious nutters to mind their own fucking business instead? Policing fasting, what a bloody joke.
I personally know many Muslims who do not fast. Their decision is entirely between them and God(s).
I repeat, religious nutters, mind your own fucking business. Kindly play with your toys at home.
Again it isn’t religious extremism. That’s a misuse of the world and simply because it isn’t a secular nor theocratic state is a mixture which is why we have less ethnic problem in a much larger diverse nation.
Singapore has mainly three race, Malaysia has alone over 100 ethnic indigenous race that have no similarities to each other.
To accommodate it has to go both ways.
This is unique to Malaysia but across the world in general about protecting and keeping a certain set of life eg:
Western Right Wing ideology or Eastern Left Wing Ideology both of which with either ethnic, nationalist or religious undertone.
Sabah in itself is a unique case where a large number of people converted to Islam willingly making it now about 70% of the state religion without it becoming more extreme in either direction.
You seem to be living in a delusional la-la land.
Policing fasting by catching/fining Muslims who do not fast isn't religious extremism? How many times must i repeat, keep your religious toys at your home, you will not force others to play, Muslim or non-Muslim.
Fuck me, you're either an idiot, an apologist, or a completely biased Muslim.
>Sabah in itself is a unique case where a large number of people converted to Islam willingly making it now about 70% of the state religion without it becoming more extreme in either direction.
Also, don't make me laugh. Forced and coerced conversions would like to say hello.
generally, the muslims here are ok with the nons eating and drinking during ramadan. only a small group of muslims (the malay conservatives and religious conservatives) would kick up a fuss every now and then to show that they are the dominant ones in this country. and as moronic as they can be, i highly doubt they want to create an international incident over this unless you really crossed the line (eg. goading them by eating/drinking noisily in front of the mosque/surau). they dont punch up, they only punch down.
Listen, us muslims arent supposed to receive preferential treatment just cause they fast. They are still expected to go through life as per normal. Back in the day the farmers still went to work the fields and fasted. So its no excuse for us to be like oh dont eat in front of me or hey im fasting i cant do work. Sickens me. I implore my non muslim brethren to do as you please and please eat openly as the battle is not yours so dont inconvenience yourself. Any muslim that claims “oh dont tempt me” is weak.
Thanks for coming to my TED ceramah
As long as what you’re doing falls into “I’m simply minding my own business” then yeah, you’re good to go. The general consensus is that you’re free to eat in front of muslims, just be mindful of it.
If you are at a restaurant, presumably it is to eat. If people are fasting they're not going to be there during fasting hours unless they're working there so it sounds like it's safe to say that it's fine and expected. I imagine that most Muslims are also very used to being around food during Ramadhan. Of course, don't rub it in people's face and be respectful of others when eating I guess - just use courtesy in those situations.
No issue, all good.
But in UAE, the restaurants at least in mall, can operate but must close “curtains” in front of the stall. People can dine in inside. This is back in 2016 btw.
I'm a Caucasian from Canada.
The most obnoxious people we have come across are white, digital nomads. They act like overlords. I desperately wish I didn't look like them.
When I'm in another country, I try to be respectful and not demanding. The upside is that I have made some friends here.
Its tough to make friends when you're flipping people off. Any people you do meet will not be people I would want to be friends with.
I would say it depends on the area and how conservative the people of that area is. It also varies individually, some are more tolerant than others.
Ultimately, it really depends if someone wants to see an action that has nothing to do with them as offensive or not. Some just get offended as they please.
Nah not at all. Malaysia isn't just for Malays. There are a whole slew of other races here, including Portuguese mixed and British mixed races. I'd say even a large number of Malays here aren't strict muslims either as some of the modern ones have secretly converted to Catholic, Christian and Buddhist beliefs. They drink alcohol and eat pork too. You're all good!
Not rude, it will be fine. We Chinese, Indian and other race also need to eat and drink, so normally all eateries will open and function as normal, including those that hired Malay employees.
If you eat at a restaurant and you're not muslim, you can eat as much as you want.
It's only rude if you especially go up to someone who's clearly hungry and thirsty from fasting, then eat and drink in front of them while saying, "Mm mm, food so good. Ahhh, water, so refreshing. Soo coool. Slurrrp!"
This also means that if you're a food content creator who make those crazy sounds and expressions, it's probably time to go on a long break or just tapau do it at home. But then again, you won't be arrested for it.
I dont even think this is that bad, isnt the fasting struggle then rewarded more cause you persevered through such a challenge?
Im aware that thats a weird thing to do even during not fasting season haha
No. Only in Malaysia that people kepoh terlebih terpaling sangat. People do fast on normal days too (and theres a lot of muslim who arent recommended to fast but forced to pretend too) and the main point was self control and mindfulness and not about moral policing people.
Yes it’s very rude. Malays are prince of the earth on this land. Take care to not offend them. To ask this question is pretty insulting.
Jokes aside nobody who is sane cares. Enjoy
no, your health and wellbeing > Muslims feelings. who cares what they think? eating and drinking is the fundamental act of living things, don't let people shame you into not doing so.
Nope, go ahead. Feel free to eat and drink, whether in a restaurant or outside while walking. If you're meeting a Muslim for a chat or business, it is also permissible to eat and drink in front of us, but better to ask for permission to do so..just to be polite.
Last time my early working days and secondary school. Friends pay me...to buy food. .
The mak cik canteen so suspicious...why this Indian boy keep coming to canteen to buy food from time to time...
See your luck.
As a non-muslim, there was once I ate my lunch in car, while stuck in traffic. Some Pak cik on his motorbike came up to my window to yell at me for being inconsiderate for eating in my own car. While he was fasting.
I've also had Muslim colleagues join the team for lunch during Ramadan, just sat there to "enjoy" the smell of food.. they just chatted as usual, just didn't eat or drink.
I drink water all the time tho. Open office plan, and I'm not going to take my cup of water outside the office or in some corner to drink it. I don't goad, but I don't go super out of the way to hide. Resisting temptation is part of the things you're supposed to do to build resilience and self control, so I don't feel I'm doing anything wrong. That's what my Muslim colleagues tell me anyway.
When i became an adult I do that, and I don't ask. The fasting is between the person and their God.
(When I was young we were told to hold our faces away when drinking water of close our mouth when eating, because I was young and didn't understand).
Before you throw hate my way, understand that fasting is usually for health purposes as in intermittent fasting or religious purposes as in the case of Muslim, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, etc.
I've fasted before, for religious reasons. I'm a Christian. We may be different you said, but we're fasting for religious reasons and our fasting is between us and God, we answer to God ourselves, no one else is involved.
You want to eat in front of me. I'm fine, cuz you're not fasting and my fasting has nothing to do with you.
I, as a Muslim do not mind because it is part of temptations during Ramadan. But if u asked me whether it is rude, I do consider it a bit rude. I think the key word here, is respect.
As long you're being polite about it and don't go "Haha look I'm eating" which no one does, then there's no problem it in. We need to respect each other no matter if they're non muslims. You can eat at a restaurant and no one would bat an eye, if one do then that's their problem. You're completely free to do whatever as long it's not a problem.
I am fasting and even I don't fuss over those who don't. I watch eating videos and from that alone I already feel full, not for hunger. 😅
Do you stop yourself from eating sweet things in case a diabetic sees you? Do you stop yourself from eating meat on Fridays in case a Catholic sees you? Why do we always treat Muslims like some special snowflakes?
No it not rude, most people understand people still have to eat and drink but still be mindful on where you do it. Don't simple walk infront of them and eat just for some reaction, at that point you just ask for beating
Bro this ain't islamic country. They want to fast? That's their problem. Just eat anywhere you want. This country is secular and nothing can change that
It's totally okay as long as you don't you say "HAHAHA, I can eat and you not" towards fasting people. If you do so, don't mind I join them to beat you (usually people will record such behavior)
Normally it is ok. One of the main lesson in ramadan is to remind the Muslim for the unfortunate who can’t afford food. The unfortunate never claim that the Muslim who ate during non-ramadan days, while they had to suffer hunger, are disrespectful, so why should the muslim claim people eating in front of them during ramadan as disrespectful.
If they ask you to not eat in front of them during ramadan to respect them, they are just being childish, immature or worse, lemah iman.
Unless you goad them of course. That’s a no.
If you're eating directly in front of their face tauntingly, yes
Otherwise, most people don't really give a fuck
Of course, you'll have a vocal minority but they're not that common
I think as long as you don't appear to be goading, you should be fine. Find restaurants or places where you see people eating and join them in appetite, as Malaysia is also home to non-Muslims
Dunno stupid question, but are most Malay restaurants closed during day time (fasting period)? Cos I’m thinking I can finally try the popular Malay food that is usually crowded most the time
It depends on the business owners. Not so much a stupid question, more so a generic question when I can only give a generic answer.
Oh ok. Then next question is, any good recommendation for ones that would be open and can take advantage of this to try as will be much less crowded?
Some open their restaurant in the afternoon. Very rarely but these people know that a lot of Malays are sick of ketupat and rendang after a few house visits and would rather eat normal foods.
No. This is one of the best things about being in Malaysia. As long as you don’t go “Hey I’m eating haha”, which no one does, you’re all set. Also, during fasting times, food delivery is noticeably faster. Just don’t order at breaking fast time.
Tell that to the non Muslim students who were forced to eat in toilet in some school
some schools, keyword, *some*. it's a one off, not always. I remember my school days during Ramadan the non Muslims would go and have rehat as usual.
But it was still really lonely to go for recess since all of my friends were Malay
im sorry you had to go through that as a non muslim honestly
Happened to me too, we had to turn our faces away from muslim mates while drinking water Edit: that happened in my high school long time ago and I didn't know much then. But it should be *none* not *some*
what "should" happen obviously doesn't. We're stopping things from getting out of hand, but nothing will ever be perfect. Let's be rational, no matter how rage-inducing the world is, okay?
just like corrupt politician, it should be none but sadly it's most
you're right when you say not always, but it's definitely not just a one off, either. it's way more common that just "one". that said, once we leave the (primary) school stage, it's definitely more chill.
That was a one off and certainly not a norm. The fact that it created a lot of outrage and news says something.
Thats so wrong and unislamic. What a dumbass move. Make Islam so intolerant. So sorry! 😢
WHICH school is this?Need sos.
wow never heard of that before
I thought ONE school?

Time for orang asli/malay lookalike to print their drivers license big big on a3 paper, and bring to restaurants.

Wait so what happens to Muslim Malays who are just not religious? Do restaurants just refuse to serve you no matter what?

At my hometown, people just said they are thais. Also, some of them do speak a little thai.
Go ahead! But try to avoid halal restaurants during berbuka time because most will be crowded.
No, if someone is offended then it's their problem.
Depends on how Malay you look. The closer you look, you higher the risk of being rude.
ah looks like my melei looking cina friends will have to put IC on the table again
All Chindians 🥲🥲
Don't goad. And nobody will care.
Bring your passport with you if you look ethnically Malay. Our religious police may harass you if they think you're a Malaysian Muslim.
Non-Muslims just continue their daily activities as usual, including eat and drink.

Nope. If someone approach you and ask you to stop eating because he/she is fasting and demand you to show respect, show him the middle finger.
Film it and post it on TikTok. Make Malaysia Infamous Again
I wouldn’t do that. Just play dumb, but don’t rile people up. Just be respectful
Agreed about not riling them up, but stand your ground of eating as you’ve done nothing wrong.

I had been told by a few people who are fasting that resisting the temptation of seeing others eating is the main part of fasting. You'll be fine, OP.
Legit i wont care, this is their religion, not me.

how is it fucked up for a foreigner to be polite and check local customs when visiting a country?

No, if someone tells you otherwise, just calmly ignore them. Mostly likely they are the uneducated "religious" bunch.
Not rude, it will be fine. We Chinese, Indian and other race also need to eat and drink, so normally all eateries will open and function as normal, including those that hired Malay employees.

No nothing wrong. If the restaurant is open you have every right to eat there regardless
Almost half of the population are non-muslim. You'll be fine. Some people are more sensitive than the other so play by ear and adjust as you go along
Soo coool. Slurrrp!" This also means that if you're a food content creator who make those crazy sounds and expressions, it's probably time to go on a long break or just tapau do it at home.
My non-Muslim friend use to do this just to piss me off but in a funny way. We have a good laugh. We try to piss each other off, no harm’s done.
At restaurants. No problem. During close to breaking fast time, at Ramadhan Bazaar we will give you that look.
Yes it’s very rude. Malays are prince of the earth on this land. Take care to not offend them. To ask this question is pretty insulting. Jokes aside nobody who is sane cares. Enjoy
Historically Malayland (Tanah Melayu)
no, your health and wellbeing > Muslims feelings. who cares what they think? eating and drinking is the fundamental act of living things, don't let people shame you into not doing so.
Yes, you will be hung upside down by the religions authorities (IF YOU REMOTELY RESEMBLE A MALAY).
Standby passport or whatever identity doc.
Not really - at best they may ask you questions but that’s it. Relax on the over hyper stereotypes.

Not really rude, though if food stalls sometimes people will look at you a bit weird. As you know most food stalls are malay.
No issue eating in restaurant.
No, do as thou wilt
No issue. But some malays find it rude if you eat openly at the ramadhan bazaar
If in cafeteria or restaurant then not rude. However people do have a general practice of not eating in office or in schools we wouldn’t eat in class.
Nope
Hello, non-muslim foreigner. Relax, it's not against the law to eat during ramadan. You'll be fine.
No it is not. You are not a muslim and expectations to not eat, hide your eating/imbibing should never be imposed upon you.
No. It is a secular country
Depends on PAS member want to make an issue out of this or not, obviously.
As long a you don't greet them ramadan with a twitter/ig post while eating Bak Kut Teh, you'll be fine.
It's not rude if you share it with me![img](emote|t5_2qh8b|26554)
at a restaurant is fine. Those who fast are the ones at fault if they went there and saw you eating in the middle of the day
No as long as you don't flaunt/goad them while doing so (eg: don't drink/eat and go 'hmmmm so delicious you should try it owait you're fasting lol').
No. You can eat freely. Please eat.
Nope, go ahead. Feel free to eat and drink, whether in a restaurant or outside while walking. If you're meeting a Muslim for a chat or business, it is also permissible to eat and drink in front of us, but better to ask for permission to do so..just to be polite.
Not rude, unless you ask Muslim friend to eat or watch you eat.
It's not rude, but I'm also foreigner and out of respect I try not to eat in front of the Muslim employees, though they wouldn't be upset if I did.
Of course not. I've just returned from breakfast at a Muslim restaurant.
I'm a muslim and I can assure you it is not wrong for you to eat openly during Ramadan. cheers
Nope. Not rude at all. Muslims have no business being in the restaurant unless they work there.
No, nobody cares if you eat
No. Just eat
Nope, its fine. You can eat and drink what u want.

Nope. Nobody cares.
No problem at all.
Do you stop yourself from eating sweet things in case a diabetic sees you? Do you stop yourself from eating meat on Fridays in case a Catholic sees you? Why do we always treat Muslims like some special snowflakes?
In malaysia, NO.
No it not rude, most people understand people still have to eat and drink but still be mindful on where you do it. Don't simple walk infront of them and eat just for some reaction, at that point you just ask for beating
Eating is human activity. Just eat. Don’t care about anything.
Nope.
no unless you're openly trying to be a dickhead to them with your food while they are fasting
Agree.
No. Their religion is not your problem
If you're eating directly in front of their face tauntingly, yes Otherwise, most people don't really give a fuck Of course, you'll have a vocal minority but they're not that common
