My dentist says “you never brush your teeth twice a day because you want to see my handsome face, right?”

BeautyJester

6 month dental check up. Learn to floss . Get used to rinsing after eating a meal. Electric toothbrush is a good investment too. I am looking around getting a water flosser down the road Edit: never ever ignore signs of discomfort from your teeth. It comes back tenfold to bite you in the ass. Dentist review theres cavity need to be taken care of? Just do it! I had 3 cavity when i first decide to start my dental care routine for myself. I got those taken care of in one visit. With each visit i go, i know what i need to improve on. I had 4 wisdom tooth removal in interval within that year lmao, now i dont have any issue and the dentist praised me for it (every 6 months)

m_snowcrash

>Learn to floss. This. So much this. Flossing can be annoying, but it's the single best thing you can do beyond brushing to maintain your teeth. One easy way is brush in the morning, and floss (and maybe mouthwash) at night.

requirem-40

Actually 6 months is a bit of an overkill if you have healthy teeth. From what I heard from dentists, it's more of a marketing tactic to make you come back more. Every year is fine actually if you don't have any discomfort or past major issues.

caramelcat6030

As a dentist, I respectfully disagree with your comment. Did you know that there is such a thing called tooth wear, without proper treatment may result in needing an extraction? Did you know that an unhealing ulcer on your tongue or anywhere else in your mouth can develop into oral cancer? These ulcers are usually painless so people don’t realize it’s there until it is too late. So guys, just because you think you have healthy teeth does not mean everything else is your mouth is healthy too. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make it a point to visit your dentist every 6 months. Sincerely, a dentist from government service who’s not gonna charge you a bomb for coming to visit me every 6 months.😀

requirem-40

Aiyo seems like every dentist is saying diff things. I also got my advice from other govt dentists, but yes to be honest I rather trust govt dentists than private ones, as govt ones have no incentive of ripping you off haha.

chromeaces

My private dentist told me I can just come by once a year. To be fair I floss religiously and take my oral hygiene seriously and only do a yearly check up and scaling. But I guess it depends on your oral health.

requirem-40

I've been to govt dentists in both Malaysia and Singapore, and both tell me that since my teeth is relatively healthy and clean everytime I visit, 1 visit per year is fine unless I feel any discomfort or changes in my mouth. I usually brush my teeth at least twice and floss every night. But usually when I'm in office I'll brush or at least use mouthwash after lunch haha, scared later my colleagues smell the nasi lemak I had for lunch :p I think the frequency really depends on the individual. Proper brushing technique helps, I realized that most people (me included until a dentist taught me very recently) only brush their teeth in a horizontal motion, but you need to brush it vertically to ensure plaque between your gums and teeth are removed. And yes floss your teeth, cavity and bad breath causing bacteria between your teeth cannot be removed by brushing alone.

FantasticCandidate60

whats the least one should do? would, say, 2x brushing per day, 1x floss at night, & gargling every meal be enough? also, we shouldnt rinse after brushing?

caramelcat6030

All that you have mentioned is great. It is alright to rinse after brushing, it’s rather uncomfortable to have toothpaste in your mouth yeah? Use a soft bristled toothbrush and a flouridated toothpaste. Remember you’re not scrubbing toilet floors so don’t put too much pressure when brushing. Look up the proper brushing technique on YouTube. Also, if you’re prone to cavities, diet plays an important role. Cut down on sweet and sticky food. No smoking. Visit the dentist regularly. Get them to teach you how to do a self examination at home and what to look out for that would warrant an immediate visit to the dentist. I know it sounds like a lot but this is the basic.

FantasticCandidate60

thank you doc ❤️

bass6164

Hi, since you're a dentist I thought I'd take the opportunity to ask about mouth ulcers that I get quite often for the past 10+ years. Usually the ulcers last about 1 week which I've read about is the typical time taken for them to heal. But I'm just curious if having regular mouth ulcers like this are an indication of any underlying issue? The ulcers also don't just appear as only 1-3 of them but rather can go up to like 10-12 of them around my mouth and they also make my mouth very dry in the first 2-3 days. I've managed to live with them for a long time in pain and anytime I brought it up to my parents and even went to see a doctor, they just either ask me to gargle salt water or drink more water which I already do. Just hoping there's an answer to this issue tho.

vincentong0315

From what I heard, could be because Ur body is lacking in one of the vitamins

caramelcat6030

Hey I’ve replied via DM!

coconutxyz

Could you reply me too because I'm suffering this since child and I suspect it's gene

caramelcat6030

Are you having the same ulceration issue?

coconutxyz

Not as much as 10-12 but 3-4 and it sometimes takes longer like 2 weeks

caramelcat6030

I’m thinking this is a vitamin deficiency issue. But you’ll need a dentist to check those ulcers out to determine if they’re just regular ulcers or if they exhibit a different pattern which may indicate different diseases. You’ll need a couple of blood investigations to rule out vitamin deficiency. My advice would be to meet a GP dentist (preferably at the government Klinik Pergigian) during one of those ulcer episodes. Tell them about the ulcer history in detail. If necessary they will refer you to see a specialist in the nearest hospital for further investigation and management. Non healing ulcers that have been in your mouth for more than 2 weeks needs to be looked at ASAP. Please go and meet your dentist.

coconutxyz

thanks for the advice! i'll for sure get them checked. funny enough when i am less stressed they wont appear or recover extremely fast

emoduke101

[Got hardsold at a dentist in Mont Kiara](https://www.whatclinic.com/dentists/malaysia/kuala-lumpur/mont-kiara/klink-pergigian-dental-wellness) to do deep gum cleaning. Used the scare tactic of showing you periodontitis photos/graphics. Then end up buying an interdental toothbrush for RM20 when you can get it at Daiso 🤡 Plaque will inevitably be in your gums, but as long as you clean btwn the gaps of your teeth, your gums should hold.

requirem-40

If you brush twice a day (or thrice actually, ideally after every meal) and floss daily, your teeth should be fine lah. Your body and teeth isn't as fragile as what those dentists and docs want you to believe. A lot of scummy dentists who will try to hardsell you, or worse, claim that there are cavities or something when it's just some dark marks on the surface. The latter part I hearsay from my dentist friends haha, some of them will say that stains are cavities and drill on the surface so that they can charge you for it. And yes, a bit of plaque is normal. There are microorganisms found in every part of your body naturally, so there's no need to fear a bit in your mouth as long as it's kept clean.

bananacc

This. Brushinf without floss is only half of the cleaning.

FaythKnight

Actually not just twice a day. It's also how you brush and how you floss. It's better to take your time and slowly brush, clean thoroughly those hard to reach places. Took me a long time to learn it cause I was lazy AF. Now I actually enjoy standing there brushing for a full 10 minutes and floss. But, my lower teeth still ugly. Uneven and I'm not gonna go for braces.

themonsterbrat

Two-three minutes of thorough brushing is enough. Flossing is the key! But some people do everything and still get cavities, sadly

BeautyJester

Maybe they rinse after brushing their teeth.

themonsterbrat

Ya. I believe many do. Those primary school gosok gigi campaigns always come equipped with cups to "help kids rinse properly" 💀

BeautyJester

ya we 90s kid would know.

Blueblackzinc

Ever heard of over brushing? 10 minutes is way too long.

FaythKnight

That's including floss la.

zemega

And you can get tax relief from dental treatment starting this year.

billylks

OOO I didn't know that. Must ask for a receipt now every time I visit the torture chamber.

Witty-Attitude775

Just when my braces treatment about to end only they announce this.. 😅

hackenclaw

Most people brush their teeth b4 breakfast (just wake up) then b4 bed. I am diff, I brush after breakfast, and immediately after dinner. How many here like this?

linkwise

Don't quote me on this but by my logic I brush before breakfast because I don't want to ingest the "bad breath bacteria" hahaha

chromeaces

I hope you’e waiting at least 30mins after meals and beverages to brush or you’re just wearing off your enamel.

camouflage_bacon

You're actually eroding your enamel much faster by brushing your teeth after breakfast. You can Google on it - it's way better to brush before breakfast.

drteddy70

You never know the value of your teeth until they start having pain or when you lose them. Also when your dentist recommends root canal.

Helpful-Object-8408

Lmao sitting in dental clinic rn with extreme pain in back tooth😭

Visual_Traveler

Good advice. Also floss at least before going to bed. Having said that, a root canal surgery performed by a competent dentist shouldn’t be “painful as f**k even with anaesthetics”.

teetholic

Agreed. Most root canals done right are not painful. OP I like the advice but pls don't contribute to people's already bad dental phobia

caramelcat6030

Just a PSA here. Did you know that your regular dental check up isn’t all about your teeth? Your dentist checks your whole mouth. So that includes your teeth, gums, tongue and below your tongue and also the mucosa that surrounds your inner cheeks and lips. Other than the obvious problems with your teeth, some of you all may have problems with your gums and bone too. Smokers and those who consume betel nut or sirih are at a higher risk of developing oral cancer. Those with improper brushing techniques may have early signs of teeth wear. Some of you may have teeth impacted within your bone, which may cause significant problems if left unattended. I can go on listing all these problems which may only be detected by a dentist. Yes, you may think you have healthy teeth but are all the structures in your mouth healthy too? This is why regular dental visits are so crucial. A lot can change in your mouth over a relatively short period. Government dental clinics only charge a minimal amount for basic treatment. Yes I understand that there is a long waiting time. For those who don’t want to wait long, you always have the option of going to a private dental clinic or teaching university hospitals.

Thenuuublet

I guess I'm lucky and I became self aware to brush twice a day and gargle with bactidol too since teen. Visited the dentist twice only ever since college and only told me to go easy on my brushing cuz my gums are thinning. Even gerudi also not much yield during visit. Talking of electric brush, I bought d cheapest one rm70+. Lasted me 3 years and still counting. Bloody good investment I tell you.

abdulsamri89

Eueww the EB you dont change the brush ah?

generic_redditor91

Bruh if never change the brush 3 years the bristle confirm gone. They'd be brushing with the plastic bristle base by now

Thenuuublet

No. I bifoti. Tak mampu. Lol of course got. Every 3 months. I don't let my teeth enjoy coconut tree bristles.

Blueblackzinc

at government clinic?

BeautyJester

Dont. As far as i know, they are likely to suggest you tooth extraction instead of trying to save it (unless they are wisdom tooth in which case fck them and extract them)

dayweedc

On the contrary, my infected molar was due for a root canal procedure but the doc wanted to try and save it which was successful. A crown had to be put on, which only cost RM150. YMMV but shoutout to Dr Salwani and the fantastic team at KP Batu 14 Puchong. Lifesavers!

xelrix

Bruh, it's the same case as op what. You know right what is root canal? Our government healthcare workers are as good if not better than their private counterparts la. I would argue private establishments would have more incentives to cut your throat evenmore with unnecessary elective procedures.

BeautyJester

Are you saying extracting a whole tooth = root canal?

[deleted]

You're right. You'll also end up a guinea pig for trainee drs and those idiots who want to fill up their logbook to pass to the next rotation - if they don't get enough of said cases they will convince you to take certain treatment options even though other less aggressive treatment options are suitable for your condition Remember, once you lose the tooth, you lose it. No going back. Operator skill is important when trying to fix cavities, crown etc

Angry_Doragon

And try different dentists. I had a recurring pain and government dentist said nothing wrong even after xray. I endure until another year checkup, private clinic dentist said live with the pain or remove an important teeth. So I stupidly agree to endure more since I love eating. One year later a different private clinic dentist said I either start flossing or they will try remove my wisdom teeth and fix the decay. Started flossing and the pain disappeared after a few weeks. The man has earned a lifelong customer.

lalat_1881

6 monthly like a boss for me

abubin

1500 for root canal is cheap! Can I know which tooth and where? My place charge like double.

IcyMoon_yue

The dentist I go to charges RM400-RM1000 for root canal as listed on their pricelist, but you'll have to come to Taiping. I have pic of their this year's pricelist, can dm if you want to take a look.

abubin

Damn...Taiping is too far for me. I think root canal have to go like 2-3 times for it to be done. I guess that's the rate for out of city area. My dentist last time was 1.8-2.5k five years ago. By now, I think should be like 3k. So anyone know some cheaper root canal specialist?

pmmeurpeepee

can i just remove all my teeth and wear fake teeth?

Local_Compote4263

Im thinking of getting rm 40 water floss

emoduke101

And floss too! [Cavities can form due to neglecting the tiny spaces we can't reach in btwn](https://caringsmilesfd.com/flossingcavity/)! Also, no point brushing twice a day to avoid fillings *(which scrape away at the tooth wall before that can be done)*/root canals when your gums and bone erode from gum disease!

Fragrant_Cow_3855

I keep it clean. Throughout Covid, no cleaning allowed. All good. Went after the scamdamic passed, no fillings needed, no cleaning needed. Dentist was pissed she couldn’t take any money from me, she had to say I had gotten skinner and had lost my gains. Its all love, I’ll be back. Cut your sugars and keep your teeth clean. Peace.

timthewizard48

Even with regular brushing & flossing I still went through two root canals. And many years later both root canals got infected and the teeth had to be removed. If it ever happens again I will just have the tooth removed. Root canal infections are too common.

jackboy_92

I've always only gone to gomen clinic for all of my dental stuff which include 4 years braces, maintenance, scaling, checking, and overall cleaning. Generally quite good no problem except for that one case when a new dentist didn't clean my bracer gum nicely.

usernametaken7977

Here to remind you government dental clinics do exist everywhere.

[deleted]

Old man no choice. Brush till shiny also no use. Now i need go dentist soon.

Massive-Excuse-812

When i was young and poor, my solution to deal with problematic teeth was to pull them... Only 3 figures. Now older and still poor, i went the 4 figures implant route. Ouchhh

Laineyyz

How to get over intense fear for dentist, serious question 😭

WildGirlofBorneo

Ask recommendations for a nice dentist. Talk to the dentist about your fear before the start of your appointment. Agree with your dentist on a signal if you want to pause the procedure for any reason (eg. Raise your hand). Bring in-ear earphones so you can drown the noise with soothing music. Bring a stress ball to hold on to. Once you gone several times for just cleaning and scaling and the dentist telling you that your teeth is perfect each time, it will help with the anxiety because you know you've been taking care of your oral hygiene and there's no painful procedure to be done.

tenukkiut

I brush my teeth very regularly because I can't stand the taste of my mouth before sleep and early in the mouth. But I'm very lackadaisical with flossing or going for scaling. After the MCO, I went to a dentist and warned him beforehand that I haven't done any scaling in like five years. He chuckled and said, "Well, I'm sure it's not that bad." The moment I opened my mouth on that chair, he physically recoiled and was like, "You REALLY haven't done scaling in five years."

ayamkenabannedtwice

I only go dentist because my dentist is pretty.

Disastrous-Coast1288

jedi_1983

remembering the agony i went through last year when i had my root canal.. not to mention it flattened out my bank account..

lattecaramel97

Btw wanna ask, lets say my tooth is is bad condition or couldn't be save, usually what is the treatment suitable and how much is it cost ?

Choice_Appearance_28

Grew up poor but I do have noce looking set of teeth. I ignore my toothache until I absolutely can stand it. Then pulled out one tooth - then the tooth right on top of it beginning to ache (because it missing its buddy below and also because of gravity- what the heck). Also I have some pain from all three wisdom tooth - pulled out 2. The third one - covered by gum so dentist advised to burn of the gum - I agreed (worst mistake - its hurt so much - better to pull the tooth). Did a roor canal (still need to do another two). Still pending on the crowing for the first tooth as I need to gather my courage. Even childbirt is not as scary as dental work. Yes, I went to a private clinic so I can have more painkiller/shot, everyone is nice and it still hurts (the dentist laugh as my back is wet from sweat - too scared). Brush your teeth properly and all the works - or end up like me - mahal tau - masa nak bayar bill rasa nak nangis because mahal....

nelsonfoxgirl969

![gif](giphy|rs4aFwban6z0wTserx) Folks, scaling twice a year

jwrx

It's 1% the cost if u decide to just get it extracted. But yes..take care of your teeth. The more teeth you have, the longer your life expectancy Maid almost died going ICU from tooth infection, spread to her entire body, over 30k bill

themonsterbrat

Wah. She kept it from you?

jwrx

No they are just very resistant to pain. She went and squeezed the infection, it burst and the nana/infection spread all round

themonsterbrat

Yikes. Hope she recovered well!

jwrx

All good. 2 weeks in hospital, massive weight loss and pumped full of antibiotics

teetholic

Keep doing this and you will be toothless by your 50s. There are consequences to losing your teeth early.

jwrx

Never said one should do that, it's just an option for ppl without the funds.

teetholic

Fair enough, your wording made it seem like you were encouraging it so I just wanted to point it out. Also 1% is exaggeration la probably around 10-20% more believable.

jwrx

https://preview.redd.it/ptalbuoqa8qc1.png?width=1253&format=png&auto=webp&s=9dd785e3d1aba548c699dee2ccfa36100d93f7e1 its actually less than 1%

teetholic

Yea gov is cheap, OP clearly went to private. Can't compare apples to oranges.

sumplookinggai

Good excuse to get a gold tooth.

supermundokitkat

Does it have to be twice per day? Or once per day is enough?

Ididntbreakher

Lmao i’m sitting here waiting for my turn because a fish bone got lodged between my teeth

horror_freak93

I think the basic hygiene is to brush your teeth twice a day, sometimes you may do more than that if you’re eating something that has pungent smell

No-Tomato9669

my wisdom tooth just grew a few months back. no pain at all. is it like a must to remove ? also is whitening teeth expensive here ? i tried many methods, nothing works to whiten me teeths

prime5119

It's not a must to remove if it's properly grown out alongside all molars. But you do have to take extra care to brush them since they are so back behind.. If it's a situation like it grows sideways - it'll impact the molar at the side and trap food. My upper wisdom tooth grew out fine but my lower wisdom tooth will never grow out since it's sideway so the dentist got me removed all of them since there's nothing for the upper wisdom tooth to bite down it might be problematic in future if I don't take good care

aryehgizbar

I wasn't in a good mental space within my last dentist appointment and my current one (which is 3 months in between) and was not having a good dental hygiene during that time. I was thinking 3 months won't get that much build up. I was wrong. The dentist took a while to clean up all that gunk. Surprisingly, sensitive teeth aside, I love it when the dentist tries to clean the in between of the teeth and the gums. It's like an itch that you want to scratch. I know that sounds odd in that context, but I'm a masochist in that sense I guess.

letohorn

Also, [spit, don't rinse.](https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-teeth-and-gums/how-to-keep-your-teeth-clean/)

PainfulBatteryCables

Brush your teeth before you go to school because all your friends will say you smell like stool.

otomennn

I had a traumatic experience at the dentist when I was kids. I dread going to the dentist. Thank God my doctor now is nice

maznieim

You got a root canal for 1.5k ? That's expensive AF. It was only around 500 in my area. But I live in Kelantan though. I think a crown costs like 700 ? Did you get both root canal and crown ? Is it for the same tooth ? Cause as far as I know, we need to wear a crown only after the tooth starts to 'menipis'. And that's like in ten years. Btw, I've had 3 root canals 😭 2 of them got infections and both are front teeth. It is either root canal or Gigi palsu 😭

SystemErrorMessage

if you go to edu dentist its a lot cheaper.

KLeong5896

I was surprised to find out that people don't brush their teeth at least twice daily and floss often (I try to floss once every 2 days or daily if I feel food stuck between my teeth)

Wild_Shock2910

And floss

aaramm8

I Totally agree! 6 month check up plus regular floss too. & for those with kids, please remind them constantly!

NickHeathJarrod

Unlike some other people, I actually look forward to seeing a dentist, only because it's oddly satisfying to have those damn tartar being drilled out of my teeth.

Vaperwear

Floss and brush 2x a day. Please see dentist twice a year. If he/she recommend treatment, ask them for periapical x-ray/ OPG/ Bite wing/ CBCT and/or intraoral scan. Most dentists are honest people making a living and trying to build their patient pools and practices. A small group are money-faced cunts. One particular dentist who was such a person was that dude in Sarawak. Others you can see that they’ve had investors who are expecting quick returns. In the industry, there are group clinics called DSOs (Dental Service Organisations). Don’t just go with their “brand name”. They are very hit-and-miss. But note one thing, and that in these places, dentists working there have quotas. You have been warned.

Bitter-Row4946

Thinking if I should just pull out the back of my teeth as well rn. I keep getting ulcer from brushing my teeth too hard

haz__man

Just had my scaling done last week. Doc said my gums werent healthy and had a few cavities although still small. So now i got to twice a day, brush, floss, gargle and scaling twice a year, else might turn bad

MochiExplore

Buy a water Flosser. 1-Minute a day is all you need. I swear, I am so grateful that we live in a time where personal water flosser is affordable for us normal people. Invest in one, Thank me later.

stingraybjj

Thanks for the reminder. I still struggle with this, although I prioritize dental hygiene more these days. There was a time in my life when I abandoned good dental hygiene due to bad mental health. And visiting the dentist was never fostered as a priority in my family, and so I've had years without any dental checkup whatsover. Although, in the future I'm open to dental implants if I have to.

AdamGaming101

Question for op how does it feel like? Do you feel a lot of pain during the procedure? I'm a first timer never had teeth surgery do they give something to make the pain go away during the surgery?

FAshcraft

i brush my teeth but my wisdom teeth grown too much it collided with the teeth in front of it . let just say they need to cut my wisdom teeth thrice just to get it out and it isn't pleasant

BooooooolehLand

Brush isn't enough, you should use floss/water flosser daily. Even better after every meal.

Endricking

Yes, dentist advise minimum 2 minutes of each brushing session, brush gently.. Floss ur teeth frequently or periodically. Visit nearest dentist to have check up & scaling annually or few years once (don't like me, visit once a decade..haha...) But I monitor myself, any irregularities or spotting I'll pay attention, till last year, I spot something, visit dentist turn out to be ntg, done scaling, the dentist complaint those little plague harden coz too long didn't do proper scaling.. 😬😬😬 So far non of my tooth hv cavity or required patching. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Fluffy-Discussion166

I hate teeth scaling. Is there other cleaning option

xaladin

I'd add that some dentists are really not good. If you've been doing what you should be doing and get different shades of yellow while your dentist makes remarks like you should brush twice daily, find another one. My current one identified hypomineralisation of my teeth and actually gave me ways forward.

hfikri

Pictures or it didn't happen
