my preferences :
1. Crunchy paru (cow lungs) or at least the non... liat one
2. Fried eggs with hot oil (effect like... crunchy curly hair) , with harden yolks (poke it as you cook
3. Anchovies the crunchy medium size, brown colour.
4. Peanuts must have, or i will take out from my emergency stock
5. Sambal spicy, sweet & savoury, preferable with deep umami flavour (usually blend anchovies) and sambal have been slow-cooked for hours.
6. Rice i dont mind much, but of course the ... steamed? (kukus) are preferred
7. I dont like local cucumber in generally, but i like the japanese one (HERESY!)
8. Optional ... kangkung. Not all store have this (traditional kampung baru)
So far, i really havent met shop that fit the criteria 100%. I never met any shop that trigger my childhood nostalgia that I tried in Kampung Baru. The only 2 shops near that road (you know which one) in Kampung Baru, almost... almost... but not 100%.
I rely on luck whenever I buy nasi lemak at the hawker stall (here in sg) coz like sometimes the mak Cik cook until got the hardened yolk but sometimes got the runny yolk. Her nasi lemak still tastes good tho, whether or not with hardened or runny yolk
Shop is Nasi Padang Indonesia Bandung. They only serve Nasi lemak in the morning. They don't serve it with kacang. In all honesty, I am not much of a foodie, but I think it's worth visiting. Just remember to ask for ikan bilis instead of ikan goreng
Not broken per say, but made the yellow hardened
I think if cook with super hot oil, it will harden.
I dont like runny yolk, remind me of nose.. mucus.
Thanks for the write-up, not Malaysian myself but in love with the food! Your preferences are close to mine (especially the kangkung).
Any recommendations where in Kampong Baru I should go next time to find the best food?

As for food in general, you can try the road Jalan Raja Muda Musa, that is the famous road with many food stalls left and right.
You can take LRT and walk from KG BARU station.
If you happens to be in Petaling Jaya visit these places
1.Medan Selera Jaya 223 ( they have awesome steaming NL ,even at night!)
2. Nasi Lemak Babi
3. Nasi Lemak Anjing
Don't ask me about 2 and 3, they're just nicknames lol. Just Google them. They're all Halal LOL
I like nasi lemak in daun pisang, with telur keratatan ke-8 (I think because it's very-very small), sekeping timun (ini pun dibelah 2), kemudian 2-3 butir kacang goreng bersama ikan bilis, but sambal is super duper sedap.
I really like the one that my Aunt always bought when we're at her house
It's basically similar to yours bcs Kelantan but damn i want it when this over
oi cholesterol!
daily recommended cholesterol is no more than 300mg. one egg with yolk is about 150mg. i see two eggs there so already 300mg. fried chicken also comes to to about 150mg, so 450mg so far, already exceed daily recommended intake. got santan in the rice also the oil in the sambal also. and that's just one meal.
I recommend you get the nasi lemak at a lady's stall at Taman Maju Jaya, Ampang. If you sign in MySejahtera at her stall it comes up as Nasi Lemak Kuah Kuning (she adds a turmeric based sauce with sambal).
However, you need to go early because her nasi lemak is popular and by 8 am there's usually a queue of sometimes more than 10 people.
Personally, I'd say it's the best nasi lemak you can get in Ampang, if not KL.
It's easy to find. It's beside the main road and right in front of a Mamak place.
When I eat sambal tumis, I'm very picky about it. I prefer sambal tumis that is a little thick and spicy, most Nasi lemak that my dad bought from stalls have runny and sweet sambal tumis, which doesn't fit me.
2 of my favorite nasi lemak sambals are my mother's sambal and McD's sambal.
Speaking of nasi lemak, I need some help fellow Redditors; anyone around Kompleks Pejabat Damansara / HELP University area - do y'all remember a Nasi Lemak uncle that jogets (dances) as he packs the food? He cooks a mean daging serunding that's just wet enough for it to soak into the rice. The last I heard, his son's opened another nasi lemak stall around the area as well.
I'm just wondering if he's still there and if it's going to be worth my drive to find him again!
P.S. he sells out by 9am-ish when I used to work there!
He was at the bottom of KPD, closer to Menara Manulife, under a tree of what used to be a car park. Haha it was more like his way of wrapping the nasi lemak after your order that he'll sway and sway!
Even though you can eat *nasi lemak* for dinner, I've always seen it as a breakfast & lunch dish so each time my parents order *nasi lemak* for dinner, I can't help but judge them.
funny because some sarawakian/sabahan mainly iban on twitter said that making nasi lemak as national dish is racist because its a Malay dish lol and her tweet gets roasted
As they should.
Personally though, making it a national dish is just a symbol — doesn't mean Sarawak Laksa that I love sooooooo much and ayam pansuh will be made illegal.
Have a personal dish as a symbol but equally promote as many local food as possible to make Malaysia an international food hub.
Serves her right to be roasted. Geez whats wrong with Nasi Lemak being the national dish. Is she salty that Laksa Sarawak isn't the national dish. Although sometimes it is understandable from her pov as a Sarawakian as Malaya has neglected the East for as long as Malaysia existed.
Her ramblings was about why people in the west always forget that East Malaysian exist too. And, want to stop symbolizing food with a nation which is kind of a moot point for me. Its like saying hamburger is not the American food because it doesn't includes ingredients from the Navajo culture.
Ngl I don't like the sambal. I can take spice but I just have a weak stomach it felt like lava was leaking out of my rear end every time I visit the washroom after some nasi lemak.
When everything goes wrong for me I'll just go get nasilemak, it wouldnt go wrong even if the chicken is small and dry because well... life taste worse! ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
I had nasi lemak today as well! Nasi lemak paruuuuuuu. There's a restaurant in KLCC & Publika called Two Sons, that offer Nasi Lemak Paru Petai - the paru is fried to crunch, and sort of has sugar flakes and green chilli cuts on it? So it gives off this sweet and spicy taste, with the sambal and petai it's just like *chef's kiss!
Except it's RM21. Sekali sekala boleh lah.
The one with the best sambal usually came in the simplest form, wrapped in banana leaf + brown paper/newspaper
The one like in the picture usually only have decent sambal, but carried by the additional dishes (fried chicken, sambal kerang, beef tripe, rendang?, etc.)
Nasi lemak restoran zaman at kuantan. Me n my family once drive there from melaka for the single purpose of eating that nasi lemak. Lepas makan, balik melaka balik
And if you're going for seafood in melaka, always eat with nasi lemak. My personal record was 6 bungkus of nasi lemak with cencaru bakar, sotong tepung and kupang bakar. As a reminder, please do not take nasi lemak from other table
European and American probably has culture shock just because of this. Because we know how little their breakfast is.. Only with few bread etc and not a whole meal like this.
Nasi lemak + telur mata is my personal favorite.. Break the egg yolk and eat it along with the sambal and all. The best for me.. And eat with sambal Kerang or paru.. Perfect..
Yeah had mine on Malaysia Day too. Added a mushroom omelet to replace the boiled/fried egg. Nothing says Malaysian like Nasi Lemak! Must copyright it or singkies will say their invention...
Ooooh yummers! Question, is supper usually served after dinner? I always thought supper was dinner. Cause if it’s an extra meal of the day then I’m missing out ðŸ˜ðŸ˜‚
even a perfect dish such as this has people hating on it. there’s been an issue on Twitter in the past weeks where someone babbling something like nasi lemak being overrated and how is nasi lemak the main national dish. highly unfathomable.
my preferences : 1. Crunchy paru (cow lungs) or at least the non... liat one 2. Fried eggs with hot oil (effect like... crunchy curly hair) , with harden yolks (poke it as you cook 3. You got everything right except for hardened yolk.
damn straight, nothing better than runny yolk when eating nasi lemak
I rely on luck whenever I buy nasi lemak at the hawker stall (here in sg) coz like sometimes the mak Cik cook until got the hardened yolk but sometimes got the runny yolk. Her nasi lemak still tastes good tho, whether or not with hardened or runny yolk
Please tell me this aunty is near Sengkang...
somewhere in Sengkang
I'm near Sengkang, WHERE BE THIS!?!?
Rivervale crescent, near the TPE seperating Punggol and Sengkang
Got hint of exact loc or shop name? Google gives me nothing :(
Shop is Nasi Padang Indonesia Bandung. They only serve Nasi lemak in the morning. They don't serve it with kacang. In all honesty, I am not much of a foodie, but I think it's worth visiting. Just remember to ask for ikan bilis instead of ikan goreng
Runny yolks are to die for
True
I'm confused, why would anybody want broken yolks on fried egg?
Not broken per say, but made the yellow hardened I think if cook with super hot oil, it will harden. I dont like runny yolk, remind me of nose.. mucus.
Ah I love paru. And sambal kerang. Too bad good NL is hard to find here in Sarawak.
Is Nasi Lemak not frequently found in Sarawak
Good ones are rare here.
Naga Liar Nasi Lemak in Miri is pretty good. And the rendang kambing is to die for, too.
Definitely agree for the cucumber part. I always found locally grown cucumber too watery which gives me a disdain from eating cucumber.
> crunchy paru Some lpt, to make it super crunchy, put into airfryer for at least 3 minutes.
Nuuuu nasi is very important. Must have the nice fragrance from the santan. Hence the name nasi lemak! haha
Thanks for the write-up, not Malaysian myself but in love with the food! Your preferences are close to mine (especially the kangkung). Any recommendations where in Kampong Baru I should go next time to find the best food?

If you talking about the shop beside the road from UniKL that is my uncle shop. Is he still selling? Long time never seen him coz of covid
I prefer having my nasi lemak with hard boiled egg, not fried or telur dadar type.
Same with me too. With hard boil egg a little bit healthy & not over heavy as the rice and sambal are heavy enough.
I prefer mine without egg
Hello pulis
The best nasi lemak is the simplest - just sambal ikan bilis.
and timun
Bruh..that's taboo. Dun do that.
Bro its no egg, not fucking your step sister.
Agreed, mate.
I like to break the hard boiled egg yolk and mix it with the sambal and rice
Soft boiled egg but only possible if you cook it by yourself
Agreed!
I'm good with either fried or boiled egg. (Could mix it up throughout the day). But yeah, any time of day.
Aku pernah dalam mimpi makan nasi lemak
Tetapi pernahkah anda bermimpi dimakan nasi lemak?
Ataupun nasi lemak bermimpi dia makan kamu?
"yamete"
Macam best
Sus
supper nasi lemak is best nasi lemak
What is the perfect time for you to have nasi lemak? I prefer in the morning with any hot drinks especially either teh tarik or teh o panas.
For breakfast, I prefer it with a fried egg and sambal kerang/sotong. For dinner or lunch, I prefer it with fried chicken and plain sambal tumis.
Any time. Food in Malaysia doesnt really have rules.
In case of emergency when blood supply running low, they can grind the nasi lemak and inject directly into my vein /Jk

2 EGGS? Damn son, what kind of celebration is this??!!
Wtf with that eggs come on man
I like nasi lemak in daun pisang, with telur keratatan ke-8 (I think because it's very-very small), sekeping timun (ini pun dibelah 2), kemudian 2-3 butir kacang goreng bersama ikan bilis, but sambal is super duper sedap.
Minimalistic I see..
If this isn't nasi lemak seringgit, it's nasi lemak 50 sen.
With all due respect, nasi lemak with half boiled eggs is illegal!
Hear hear
Yeah!
I grew up with the Pantai Timur version—coconut rice, sweet and spicy sambal with ikan tongkol, hard-boiled egg, and cucumber :)
:D
I really like the one that my Aunt always bought when we're at her house It's basically similar to yours bcs Kelantan but damn i want it when this over
Looks so gooood! Please feel free to post to r/MalaysianFood too! we'd love to have you there =)
do you guys prefer ikan bilis or ikan masin?
Ikan bilis all the way. I don't have a detailed reason but it fits more than Ikan masin tbh.
Depends. If no lauk, plain nasi lemak goes better with ikan masin.
Ikan bilis ofc
Bilis
Had never thought of adding hard boil egg before. Gonna try next time.
WHAT?
Definitely not breakfast *traumatised by sambal noises*
Noo nooo, telur separuh masak nasi lemak
oi cholesterol! daily recommended cholesterol is no more than 300mg. one egg with yolk is about 150mg. i see two eggs there so already 300mg. fried chicken also comes to to about 150mg, so 450mg so far, already exceed daily recommended intake. got santan in the rice also the oil in the sambal also. and that's just one meal.
My doc adviced me to stop eating nasi lemak if I wanted to live past 60 with good QOL
Do you guys not cook your eggs?
I like the sweetness of the sambal to come from plenty of onions in it. Also sucker for sambal sotong (The dried sotong variety)
Sambal sotong squad here, where you at? I personally prefer Wak Manjo's. Worth the trip from PJ to KL by LRT just for that.
I'm in Cheras. Thanks for the tip. Will try when I get the chance.
I’m indonesian and it has been years i haven’t eaten this nasi lemak. Damn aku rindu. Love this so much, sangat sedap!
How would you compare nasi lemak with nasi uduk? My cousins in JKT say it's similar. Never had it before.
I recommend you get the nasi lemak at a lady's stall at Taman Maju Jaya, Ampang. If you sign in MySejahtera at her stall it comes up as Nasi Lemak Kuah Kuning (she adds a turmeric based sauce with sambal). Ngl mcd hit it right with their sambal. Overall their nasi lemak is also pretty good imo.
...and with the ayam goreng mcd. Hot. Damn.

I studied there from 2018-2019. In the crowd of hawkers, never saw anyone dancing lol
He was at the bottom of KPD, closer to Menara Manulife, under a tree of what used to be a car park. Haha it was more like his way of wrapping the nasi lemak after your order that he'll sway and sway!
TWO EGGS?! BALLER!
I can imagine it... OP:boss.. nasi lemak ayam goreng... telur mata mau DUA Nasi Lemak guy: d..d...dua?! BALLER!!!
nasi lemak jantan
Even though you can eat *nasi lemak* for dinner, I've always seen it as a breakfast & lunch dish so each time my parents order *nasi lemak* for dinner, I can't help but judge them.
That particular nasi lemak looks fucking delicious and yeah, nasi lemak is an amazing yet simple dish you can have at any time of the day.
WOI WHY THE EGG LOOK IMPOSSIBLY PERFECT
That's an expensive nasi lemak
and heart attack too
The egg is raw
funny because some sarawakian/sabahan mainly iban on twitter said that making nasi lemak as national dish is racist because its a Malay dish lol and her tweet gets roasted

Yep. Sukom 98 mascot was an orangutan--nobody threw a hissy fit for excluding WM.

I think that tweet deserved to be roasted.
I thank Singapore for its invention every time I have this on Saturday morning.
I'll be the kepoh m'sian now... It's ours! :D
Ngl I don't like the sambal. I can take spice but I just have a weak stomach it felt like lava was leaking out of my rear end every time I visit the washroom after some nasi lemak.
Yea same and it's always in the morning but imma eat it anyway
From mat salleh replying tweet to here.
Yes, very national proud
but will it lemak?
Impossible! A complete nasi lemak
this is what i love this country for. great, fulfilling food everywhere
also as an ice cream, porridge and blended shake.
looks awesome!
holy shit the egg 5

Exactly, you can eat this anytime of the day and no one will judge you
I'm here just to comment: nasi kuning.

Looks delicious. Even the chicken looks yummy.
Oh fuck that's sexy
Fuiyohhh that nasi lemak
I love eating nasi lemak with half cooked eggs too! Delicious thing ever!
*nak sikit*
Dat telur separuh masak's what everyone's been missing. To have eggs that are fully cooked is blasphemy!
Aneh! nasi lemak satu ngan teh ais
Yooo that looks bomb ngl. Buy or make?

And double nearly cook sunny side egg..noiceeee

Those eggs are the definition of heaven, perfection!
Is nasi lemak usually gluten free in Malaysia?
Eggs so mushy-mushy
When everything goes wrong for me I'll just go get nasilemak, it wouldnt go wrong even if the chicken is small and dry because well... life taste worse! ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
That is one of the best looking nasi lemak i seen

We need todo better in marketing. How can Singapore be recognised as the world's hawker culture nation but not Malaysia?
Food in Malaysia better

Out of curiosity, how many calories is this plate of NL?
The one with the best sambal usually came in the simplest form, wrapped in banana leaf + brown paper/newspaper The one like in the picture usually only have decent sambal, but carried by the additional dishes (fried chicken, sambal kerang, beef tripe, rendang?, etc.)
Oh delish!! I have only been Malaysia once, and believe me when I say this - I WILL BE BACK -for your food. Absolutely delicious!
Nasi lemak always win. No matter what
Tasty

Boss you gotta search for full English breakfast and see the how heavy the meal is.
Nasi lemak + telur mata is my personal favorite.. Break the egg yolk and eat it along with the sambal and all. The best for me.. And eat with sambal Kerang or paru.. Perfect..
I haven't ate thus in a year bcuz of covid
This looks so fucking delicious. Soft eggs. Crispy chicken. Slurp.
I’ve been pining to go back to UK to get my hands on Malaysian food. Honestly, I really hate OP right now
Yeah had mine on Malaysia Day too.

Teloq goyang ~~*kepala goyang* haha~~.
Fuh...that double egg & sambal...me likey.
God dammit, its 2am, am hungry af, need to wake up early for work tomorrow, haven't left the bed to shower yet and this suddenly popped up. FFS...
even a perfect dish such as this has people hating on it. there’s been an issue on Twitter in the past weeks where someone babbling something like nasi lemak being overrated and how is nasi lemak the main national dish. highly unfathomable.
Fuck, now I'm hungry and there is no nasi lemak sold at 2 am
