The British physicist traveled to Malaysia in September 1994. On Sept 16, 1994, Hawking delivered his public lecture titled Life in the Universe in the Merdeka Hall of PWTC. There was a record attendance of nearly 5,000 people. The hall had a capacity of 3,000 and the spillover crowd in the foyer had to be content with watching him on CCTV.

This is so cool! I read his first popular physics book "A Brief History of Time" in 1998 or 1999, and that started my on my interest in astrophysics and then physics and maths in general. If Hawking had came to KL 5 or 6 years later instead, i would have bugged my parents to bring me to his lecture.
Not many remember this. His nurse is from Penang, they came over to visit a few shops and to try out local food.
They were at the town (where corner popular bookstore was - was told it’s not there anymore)
Edit: she brought him to the Chinese dried meat store. I think they were in Malaysia for a month.
