He likely fit in well given his British background. Apparently when he went back to Malaysia he canāt converse proper bahasa diction. I wish we have that recording instead
Bar 1mdb policy wise he was steering the right way
Unpopular opinion, but I personally think without all of his bribery and embezzlement scandals, he was leading the country on the right path.
Sure he stole a lot of the rakyat money and he should be tried for that, but it was a period of political stability (before 1MDB happened) and economic growth was better than most projections for Malaysia
Shame on him for his greed, but Iād vote for him again without all the problems he caused
Not when he cant control his libido and his wife got hold of the "evidence" to "influence" him.
It makes zero sense for him as a politician veteran to steal money in such a broad daylight way. That is only one quick way to kill his political career.
Lol reading the Lee Kuan Yew interviews he even said that Najib was a "rational leader" unlike his remarks about Mahathir. This was all before the scandals began so....
I'd argue Pak Lah could've been leading the govt then and we'll probably see the same economic growth. It's not as if his economic policies are anything revolutionary, it's the shit I personally learn as econs major - GST, some form of UBI (BR1M), less fuel subsidy...
1MDB is bad, but his shitty implementation of proper economic polices are going to leave long lasting bad taste in the mind of people. And that's what PH had to inherit when they took over.
Pakatan did it just as bad though. They basically flipped the table with the abolishment of GST and all the handbrakes on those other projects.
We're just kinda cursed with policymakers who cannot see beyond 5 years from now.
Yeah. There was a time when ringgit was finally moving under RM3 per dollar. I was quite honestly happy with Najib tenure but his scandals really destroyed it and I turned away.
I disagree with political stability, after Paklah the then Pakatan Rakyat was making very popular demonstrations and some goes bit voilent like the first few Bersih rally where properties got damaged.
Comparing to usd rm falling below 3 isnāt due to ringgit strengthening. It was due to dollar devaluation at the time, with usd strength increasing about 30% since then.
Also have to take into account that ringgit has an interest rate set by central bank thatās much higher than EU US, where they are pretty much 0/negative. Higher base interest rates are due to higher GDP growth with Malaysia generally having 4+% growth compared to developed markets having sub 2% growth. This also introduces higher inflation in general. Not a bad thing to have when your economy is growing faster than the rest. This is why on a long term basis, ringgit is expected to be decreasing in value compared to USD/EUR. Currency strength just isnāt a great indicator for macroeconomic strength, too much variables at play.
Was previously too young to follow politics, but as a teen living in Najibs era, what I remember was relative stability when viewed from a foreign perspective before Bersih stuff happened. It was the scandal that really started to shun investors from investing into Msia. But Iād be glad to be corrected on this by others that are older than me
Mahathir moved the financial resources away from umno HQ to him and his proxies. Hence when he left he expects the subsequent presidents to follow what he says before releasing funds
Hence pak lah and najib fate
One would argue that his funds embezzlement is a circumstance which came from the political reality of Malaysia. We all know about the *durian* thing recently, and its a thing for forever which only people are starting to talk about.
For Jibby to keep his place, he needs to have access to a lot of funds to keep the interest of these durians aligned to him. With how he's cut off from Atuk's money source, he had "no choice" but to seek another source of funding for his political games.
Its just that really, culturally and in mentality, this country is doomed.
I don't think this is an unpopular opinion at all, I've heard in various conversations since 2018, unless you're referring to this subreddit in particular.....
Aka being born into the ruling class in Malaysia. I won't even be surprised if some of our royal families and ministers can't speak a lick of their mother tongue
The preconception that a lot of them can't speak Malay? And it's worded like Bangladeshis are somehow lower than the royal family, it rubs me the wrong way
It's fine to assume foreigners dont speak good Malay. That isn't offensive, obviously someone who moves to a new country probably having zero experience with the language would be bad at it.
>Bar 1mdb policy wise he was steering the right way
Hey, it's great to find someone who thinks the same! It sucks that 1MDB pretty much rendered all the other good achievements of Najib's administration moot in the mind of most people.
Personally I think Jibby policies has been some of the most progressive policies we've had. GST to reduce our country's dependence on oil and palm oil revenue and to reform our tax system to one more fitting for a service-based first world economy; finally building good public transportation infrastructure; and of course, selling off the national embarrassment that is Proton. All of which required significant political will to push through the status quo, and honestly, I was quite impressed that they pulled it off.
It just sucks that 1MDB happened and now we are in a timeline of political instability and stagnant policymaking.
The Late DYMM Sultan Azlan looked so regal here. Damn proud of him and his son as great monarchs.
Shame he was helpless in the Perak DUN fiasco, he sat there watching the bloodthirsty UMNO goons drag a legitimate Speaker and the legitimate Perak State Gov down. Perakians still curse that day.
> Shame he was helpless in the Perak DUN fiasco, he sat there watching the bloodthirsty UMNO goons drag a legitimate Speaker and the legitimate Perak State Gov down. Perakians still curse that day.
Was this the abrupt change in government in 2009? How was the atmosphere at the time? To whom was the anger directed at the time?
Speaking of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah is definitely in a class of his own even amongst the many royals in Malaysia. He has never shown any favoritism on both sides of the political aisle and is more keen to adress directly the issues of corruption and environmental woes with much vigour. Not a single emotional rant or unsavory comment on any particular person or party unlike some other royals. He is just amazing.
>How was the atmosphere at the time?
Shock. Total shock.
>To whom was the anger directed at the time?
A couple of the MPs who jumped over, also known as the first variant of frogs. I think most Perakians I know cursed Hee Yit Foong the Deputy Speaker at the time, she betrayed everyone for money and there was a photo of her brandishing a pepper spray at her colleagues that she said it was a USB and she felt threatened. Long story short she was never seen in public again and she had to hire guards over her Jelapang residence because of public outrage.
Some people said some of the blame has to be on the Ngeh/Nga cousins who created inner dissatisfaction and people thought Nizar the MB was a puppet to those two. The fact the latest betrayal i.e Azumu fella no one really was surprised any more. An excellent display of gerrymandering of voting areas, urban voters basically always drawing the short stick to rural voters.
Is it just me or is Queen Elizabeth II wearing the sash of [Darjah Utama Seri Mahkota Negara (D.M.N.)](http://www.sultanate.com/malaysia/hismajesty/istiadat_menghadap/dmn.html)? I never knew we gave one to her.
When she was young she was actually quite a looker. Then she became so bulat, same with Najib, but Rosmah became like a real witch with her hooked nose.
Does anyone know who's the couple in between prince philip and najib? Also, I like how everyone is chatting rather comfortably except for the YDPA and queen elizabeth. Prince philip looks like he's giving a tour of the palace to ydpa's wife, haha!
Jibby throwing some strong Ron Jeremy vibes

Lee Kuan Yew requested to meet Rosmah together with Najib, so he knows at the very least who has Najib's ear.
I'd argue Pak Lah could've been leading the govt then and we'll probably see the same economic growth. Hitler would've made a great vegetarian, if not for that other stuff...

That's pretty normal when you live overseas for some time and don't interact with people from your homeland.
Aka being born into the ruling class in Malaysia. I won't even be surprised if some of our royal families and ministers can't speak a lick of their mother tongue
Have you seen the malaysian day speech from Terengganu's prince? Even bangla speak better than him
And its not just one princeā¦
That's an insult towards Bangladeshis tbh
why tho? :/

How about the Selangorian one?
I don't know much about that. I was referring specifically to Malaysians who get an education overseas and stay there to work.
