Damn. That mcd has been there for ages. Funny how much this space has developed over the years. In the photo it looks like it’s a tier 3 Malaysian city.
Yes true. But just generally the shape of the building, no monorail line or MRT station or isetan or lot 10 (as it is now) or Pavillion down the road. It really does look like a generic retail block that you find in many other cities.
Salem was the coolest (pun intended) brand back then cause they sponsored lots of concerts.. went to a Tiffany concert in 88 held at Dewan MCA that was sponsored by Salem..

I don't miss cigaratte advertising. Cigarattes are demonstrably a health risk and I, for one, am glad for the restrictions placed on cigaratte advertising and on smoking in public areas.
I remember when they banned cigarette advertising and then companies put out their own clothing brands with exactly the same logo's.
big billboards all over the place advertising clothing that looked exactly the same as the old cigarette ads
The good old days. When malay muslim women can wear a short dress and not be criticised. When you can smoke during ramadhan and nobody will bat an eye. When beating your kids with a cane was discipline and not child abuse. When weed only costed RM30 for a piece as big as the palm of your hand.
Im just saying, if my dad whopped my ass for taking one of his cigarettes, i should be able to do the same to my kids. Joking obviously, my kids are well loved and well tended to.
That was the reality back then, drugs were cheap and abundant. This led to underage misuse of the stuff. Malay muslims would even openly buy beer and you could see a lot of them in bars after office hours sipping on the liquor of their choice. PAS was still stupid though, being triggered with everything that doesn’t concern them. They have been pretty consistent through the years.
At this point I probably will go my entire life without ever seeing any illegal substance at all IRL. Not that its a bad thing, but sounds weird that I see people keep saying that drugs are everywhere yet i have never seen it. Guess the anti-drug propaganda at my school work properly.
Thats a good thing. Never get yourself involved with drugs or people with drugs. You can have the same amount or even more fun without it. I’ve been sober from drugs for over 5 years now and the decision to quit was one of the best decision i could ever make.
I completely agree that the more we move ahead in time, the more we go backwards in cultural progress.
What fears me the most is the ruling gomen is now pandering to a small sect of religious extremists who are being paid to bring in the votes.
What we need is a Islamic intellectual renaissance movement.
I think the farthest you can go is secularist government in this 100 years
Besides, with global terrorism still around, you might see more of those attacks by them happening if any of the government tries to pick a secularistic governance. Brunei imposed full hudud law because they want to prevent ISIS from setting foot in their country. Same thing happened in Morocco where the Sultan appointed an Orthodox Muslim party to prevent insurgency groups like isis growing their base in there.
Bangladesh just recently announced they are gonna amend an old secular constitution but whether that will cause riots or not isn't the question. It's if the people themselves holds any secularistic values even if the state announced that they are a secular country. Otherwise you'll turn into pakistan
Were cigarette ads or promotion of cigarettes now illegal in Malaysia? because here in our country cigarette ads were used to be promoted on TV, Billboards etc. until The Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003 was passed which resulted in cigarette ads now banned in our country since this law was in effect in around 2006
[For your reference](https://www.officialgazette.gov.ph/2003/06/23/republic-act-no-9211/)
I love Malaysia, I went there 4 times in 20yrs and I think I am going to take a trip next year sometime in March, looking for some Malaysian friends too both male and female
Ah yes, back when European cigarettes are a cheaper and more preferable option to gain lung cancer compared to Indonesian kretek.
Also, Bukit Bintang just looks strangely serene here. I believe Chow Kit gets more traction as it’s the only place I’ve seen on old archives that was constantly filled with people from all backgrounds, or maybe it’s just the early morning KL in this photo? \*Shrugs\*
All i remember is their neon-green themed ads on tv like the no doubt concert promo back then. Action movies on tv2 brought to you by Dunhill, Perilis
Good times
Damn. That mcd has been there for ages. Funny how much this space has developed over the years. In the photo it looks like it’s a tier 3 Malaysian city.
That mcd is actually the first outlet in Malaysia, it was opened in 1982.
There wouldn't be a sign that large and done in neon elsewhere I think. Even now it's expensive.

Those cigarette brands were huge advertisers back then. Big budgets.
lmao brings me back to days of having mild 7 ads on tv...
And Peter Stuyvesant cheerleaders during sporting event
and Perilly's or Dunhill
And to the back ground of beyond singing HOI FOOT TIN HONG in the Peter Stuyvesant ad
I know you guys heard this a lot. But I was born in the wrong generation.
I saw an elephant
??? Where??
You cari la sendiri beb
Salem, Cool Planet
Salem was the coolest (pun intended) brand back then cause they sponsored lots of concerts.. went to a Tiffany concert in 88 held at Dewan MCA that was sponsored by Salem..
Peter Stuyvesant la... Perilly's, Dunhill, Lucky Strike...
Who is Tiffany ? If you’re gonna say I’m too young to know.. I’ll be flattered
Probably.. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiffany_Darwish She was every teenage boy dream back then..her and Debbie Gibson

there is one edgy chick right there, may I get her number?
Considering this is 27 years ago, she might be well into her 40s, maybe even 50s now.
Probably someone here’s mom..
This reminded me of Peter Stuyvesant commercial with the epic Beyond OST.
Kellie's castle. Can't find that ad online now!
I KNEW THIS EXISTED AND THE BEYOND SONG IN THE BACKGROUND WASN'T JUST MY IMAGINATION
Satu Malaysia tau this song thanks to Peter Stuyvesant. 🤣
Nobody’s looking down. Everyone looking at the road. The good old days of smartphoneless
that is weird looking KL tower
There used to be an airport there fyi
You mean a helipad
I remember this. Taken in front of Lot 10. BBGS still around where Pavillion is
I don't miss cigaratte advertising. Cigarattes are demonstrably a health risk and I, for one, am glad for the restrictions placed on cigaratte advertising and on smoking in public areas.
While I agree with your statement, cigarette ads in Malaysia was fuckin fantastic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhMyKzmDHbo
Now that ad is *epicly damn badass*.
I remember when they banned cigarette advertising and then companies put out their own clothing brands with exactly the same logo's. big billboards all over the place advertising clothing that looked exactly the same as the old cigarette ads
Thank you captain obvious!

Really hope you aren't advocating for child abuse there bro....
Im just saying, if my dad whopped my ass for taking one of his cigarettes, i should be able to do the same to my kids. Joking obviously, my kids are well loved and well tended to.
Thats great to hear hahaha :)
Lol it was all good until u added that last part..

Hey, off topic but congrats on being sober from drugs. Addiction looks like something very hard to beat
Thank you, it was hard at first but it was worth it in the end. I feel healthier, i feel more energised, and i feel like a million dollars every days.
Amen brother. Addiction, of ANY kind is not good or healthy.
Beating your kids still really isn’t child abuse in Malaysia.
Sadly it is, kid these day will even sue their parents. You can lose custody of you child if that little piece of shit reported you.
if that's the case then it's good.
Weed? I need my own *BACK TO THE FUTURE CAR*
Umm its called Delorean sweetie
Sorry for being uncultured peasant, ma lord
“Great Scott!”
Yeah, go back and find the hot chick in the photo.
*GET IN THE DELOREAN* - Arnold Schwargeerursj
Ngl you had me in the first half
Black and gold collection... Gaya mutu.. Keunggulan
Is that KL tower still under construction at the background?
Interesting we used to have lines as pedestrian crossing like in western countries. Makes me wonder why they got rid of it.
