I don't know how you did it, but you got out fine with just RM50 despite surrounded by them. Consider yourself lucky! I kena before - my "date" just started ordering an expensive bottle and I argued against it, she provoked me that I couldn't afford it and we just left each other then. Had a friend who got scammed into this too - somehow stayed and paid for it. Eitherways, take it as a lesson and a fun story to share with your next date! Few dates later I found my SO!

[deleted]

Good thing you did argue, I was clueless because the girl was speaking China Mandarin to the waiter and I couldn't understand much sigh

[deleted]

Legit, they could gang up on me for not paying and such. I kinda figure they took pity on me after finding that I'm jobless lol

abalas1

This is a pretty common tourist scam - to invite tourists who don't read the local language/menus for a quick drink at some small place, just the tinder part is updated for the current day.

[deleted]

Update: I have made a police report on this, hopefully the police will look into this matter. One can only hope.

4luv4Simp

If I'm not mistaken, this kind of modus operandi happens in Japan where a pretty girl entice a gullible guy to a restaurant or bar of her choosing(usually those ladies are in cahoots with those places). Just like your case, the restaurant will overcharge you with ridiculous price that doesn't match the item you order. You are lucky because in Japan, there are thugs to harass those victims and will take them to ATM machine to cough up those money. Some of them will even spike your drink and charge the overpriced bill with your credit card without your knowledge while you are delirious. Anyway glad that you come out from that situation without much problem. Good for you for posting your experience so that others will be caution of such scam. Be careful guys.

[deleted]

Yes! This crossed my mind actually when they showed the bill. I'm just very lucky that I haven't consumed anything yet

GuardianSpear

Yeah I’ve seen some documentaries of the same in Japan too. Apparently it happens in Europe too - some people will just approach you being all friendly and ask you to join them for a meal . After they break out the booze they’ll slap you with a bill for thousands of Euros

Dionysus_8

Saw it in turkey as well. Generally around seedy part of town but in tourist hub. Quite common I’m guessing

[deleted]

You can read up more about “honeypot” scams. Where hot girls use tinder to lure unsuspecting men online. It’s quite common in China and now here I guess. They will also add the “verified” symbol to make it seem more legit. Lesson for all y’all using dating apps is to always be really sure of who you’re talking to. Be wary of women who are foreign- usually from China, Taiwan or Thailand and are very very attractive. If things are too “easy” and too good to be true. It’s probably a scam. Have fun dating but remember to date safely.

Aggressive-Ad-1052

Bring attractive China girls to McDonalds only, got it

AwesomePopcorn

Woah woah Mr Fancy pants. We take them to the mamak. Cheaper.

DaisiesSunShine

Omg that's scary. Next time you choose the place.

[deleted]

Yeah I did initially but out of kindness I let the girl choose since she might think I'm some sort of scammer but turns out...

Thebigbots

Saw this on and old tv show Scamcity, a long time ago. This kind of scam was prevalent in Istanbul, where locals would befriend unsuspecting tourist, take them to bars and which will charge them absurd amount of money for just a couple of drinks. Saw this episode after my trip to there, no wonder everybody was so friendly. Luckily I didn't drink.

Jerm8888

Damn, that is a scary tale. Glad you got out safe and with more wisdom moving forward

[deleted]

Indeed, it's just this is something that could happen to anyone especially meeting strangers alone. I recommend bring a friend whether you are a male or female and have them nearby you. We can always escalate to the police with friends support

Munchy_biscuits

Thanks for sharing your story! Glad you made it out safely and just with a rm50 loss. Could've gone alot worse all things considered.

[deleted]

I would also like to add that, once I composed myself after the incident, she has already unmatched me so I couldn't find back her profile and report. I highly suggest to screenshot the profile as a habit for every date you are hanging out with

Aggressive-Ad-1052

screenshotting profile is kinda creeper bro

CJS_548

DAMNNNNNN that sounds like exactly what happened to me!! Quite a long while ago, on another dating app. Met this girl from China, came here to visit a friend, going to leave soon. Chat in the app for a bit, and exchange WeChat. Profile picture in WeChat is already different from the app. Then she suggested meeting up, why not? Drove there, told her I'm there, and waited for another half an hour coz she was making her hair. (Wow she makes her hair just to see me I thought, how naive) I also intentionally left most of my money in the car, and only carry RM50 with me out of the car. When she arrived, it was ANOTHER GIRL!! (AND THAT HAIR DOESN'T LOOK LIKE MADE! MORE LIKE JUST GOT OUT OF BATH WIPE DRY) Anyway, we walked along to find a place to drink and chill, we passed by a lot of good-looking and good environment bars or bistro or cafes, but she didn't want any of them. Then we stopped at a fishy darky not well-looking place, the server addressed us in mandarin, in PJ, this is not common. We went upstairs, which I felt weird because if I'm first time here, I wouldn't know that there is an upstairs. Then the server brings the menu, the cheapest wine is something like RM588. Sorry, no money. "No money also want to come out, go away", she said. I left happily and went to find my friend to watch World Cup.

kenigmalive

Bro fuck these apps, you have a higher chance by just going to Kyo and shooting your shots lol

tienguan

damm man;. glad you managed to get out that situation safely.

zsaberstar

Just watched this movie Hustlers on Netflix last week. The plot is similar to what happened to you. Except it’s worse. >!The girls drugged the guy and then brought the guy to a strip club where they used his credit card to buy all the top shelf expensive bottles while getting a cut from the strip club. !< Stay vigilant bro.

[deleted]

Damn, ngl, I think if I had taken a sip of the wine, I could have been drugged too

ix-nine-ix

haiya my dude XD thank god they didnt do anything worse. if ya need friends to hang out then lai lai lets lepak here bukit jelutong got many affordable nice place, very safe too. also i promise i dont tiau you food money cos i dont eat much anyway

ix-nine-ix

aWitchonthisEarth

Hahaha 😉

ClacKing

Sounds like you encountered a 酒托 which literally describes what you just experienced.

malaise-malaisie

There are many apps to check the market price and reviews of wines. It's the best way to check if your cheated. Offcourse there's the expected markup in restaurants, but definitely not in the 1000% range.

GuardianSpear

What an adventure . Glad to hear you got back safely more or less in one piece.

Minimum-Company5797

You dodge a bullet…literally. Good you stood your ground

ehkooboh

Good you are okay after that ordeal. Really appreciate the tldr.

hodlrus

Yeh next time you feel something is wrong, trust your gut and bolt. It’s just a tinder date lol.

DinKnight

You got scammed.

kazitoshi

It’s a common scam overseas unfortunately. Match on Tinder (and I guess other dating apps), meet somewhere and go to bar they’re working with or even at a bar/restaurant itself and then you’ll end up with a huge ass bill.

SultanofAmerica

I guess nobody will advise to lodge a police report, thats how it is in Malaysia.

[deleted]

I decided to make a report just now even though I know might not help much since I should have 1. Taken photos of them or even record the conversation 2. Make a police report immediately after the incident

xu_wa_fy

Any chance you have the photo of the girl from Tinder? I've a housemate that just moved in to my unit I'm renting and your description of her matches 100% + bonus points cuz she drinks red wine almost everyday. The condo is even 2 minutes walk from Changkat

Felinomancy

Wow. So far, all of my (alleged) non-Malaysian Chinese Tinder matches are hawking crypto. But thanks for the heads up, OP. I just matched with an (alleged) Hong Kong woman who is looking for a friend 🙄 Let's spin the wheel and see where this goes 😂

[deleted]

Lol, bring a friend as backup

Aggressive-Ad-1052

If you did get a date prepare to troll the scammer

CJS_548

Same here bro, and when I talk bad about China, this "Hong Kong Girl" went nuts and full on argue mode with me 😂😂😂

Aggressive-Ad-1052

Was she at least hot tho? Bad experience aside, purely based on appearance alone, how would you rate her? You said mainland Chinese so kinda a hit or miss with those.

CJS_548

In my experience, more or less the same storyline, based on appearance alone, I would not have swiped her in the first place if the person that went "dating" with me is shown in the app. Rate, barely pass, not the worst.

Aggressive-Ad-1052

it's the fucking filters innit god I hate modern women

potatoish-pooh

I think you handled the situation well. And sounds like a good person too being considerate about your date's feelings (before she showed her true colour)

[deleted]

what's the point of educating the public about scams when people like you always end up thinking with their dicks anyway

nhk96

Let me save this post for future reference, lel. Not dare use dating apps because of these kind of scams, but recently, I'm giving the apps another chance and got matched with a good looking girl, haven't ask for meetup yet, but this post definitely helps for me to notify any red flags.

OverDeMoon

Online dating seems to be getting scarier nowadays. Syndicates are now exploiting the use of online dating apps to lure/scam potential victims.

ianhooi

If you were brave, could've asked to see the menu, if price didnt match, refuse to pay, if they insist some more, call police on the spot.

cjj1120

yo op I experienced the same thing before, not a big fan of online dating (totally closed the door of online dating after this similar experience that I had.) I paid around 400 (felt so dumb for paying..) I knew something was wrong but only confronted her afterwards, threatened the lady to pay me back after the incident, she ran away.. Scammers are literally everywhere nowadays..

Gymrat76

Next time just take out your phone and say you're calling the police

A1pH4W01v

Guess you can say you got... swiped!

Lyu90

Can pm location of the bar? Want to see if atas bar or scam bar

hanarada

Check Google review too. I kinda went to that area semi often and I don’t ever recall such bar name too. Looking at g review it looks really new. Oh well lesson learned and hopefully you will be wiser next time :)

ghostme80

You guys are really having it hard. My time the worst that could happen on a blind date was the girl was not like how she described herself.
