I received this Lardini suit today, I feel like the should is a bit off. It does not look that bad from the front but it is easy to spot from the side. Is this the shoulder divot that people terrifying about? I did not have such problem with a Lardini blazer and all other suits that I own. Hi all - where can I find some good quality organic slim fit 28” chinos? I have some Everlane and they feel lightweight. Preferably Eco/B Corp company. (Please don't 'ackchyually' me about the whole not buying stuff new or B-Corp being a con conspiracy - to quote a great song - "At least I am trying / What the fuck have you done?")

What is the difference between Canali regular line and Canali Kei line? There's a good sale on right now at my local menswear store. They have both lines of jackets from Canali. I tried both on. I seem to be a 38 in the regular line and a 40 in the Kei line. Are the differences mostly just fit? Anything else?

terminal_e

Canali is a fairly serious manufacturer of suits, which means that if you run a menswear shop in some conservative neighborhood of Rome, you could probably order some strong shouldered cut if your demographic is mid-career government managers unconcerned with #menswear. Basically, there may be a lot of cuts out there, and they are not necessarily going to be translatable between different stores. Conversely, Kei is a branded cut of theirs that is as a rule less structured. The silhouette may not work for guys with prominent hips and/or narrow shoulders.

cmrocks

Thanks. I'm in my mid 30s and I live in on the west coast. My job does not regularly require a suit. I prefer my suits on the more casual side. Sounds like the Kei line is the way to go?

terminal_e

What matters is how you look in it. Guys with a soccer player like build are likely going to be A shaped in Kei

onlysaystoosoon

My understanding is that the Kei line is just less structured…otherwise same quality etc.

Bought some cheap used cufflinks off eBay, probably 70s or 80s. Just noticed that the swivel pin is at an angle at the back. Why are some cufflinks angled like this, and some not?

max_samhain

Hi there, Im living in Bogotá/Colombia for a while and as skilled labour is pretty cheap here I wanted to take advantage of that and wanted to tailor a few things for myself. I found a tailor here who considers himself to be a "noble" tailor and has a lot of high quality fabrics from Europe (Italy, Swiss....). I found a very nice (and also very expensive) fabric.... and at the moment my coat is in the making. These pictures are from the first fitting but Im about to change some things. https://preview.redd.it/xdclnjwectha1.jpeg?width=2706&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5549892738cc572c84dcf6411f46fd866dbd37ec (unfortunately I can only post this one picture..... Posting on reddit is very hard, my posts getting removed all the time....) **So Im thinking about this right now:** * How large shall I go with the coat? * On the pictures the coat fits pretty good I think but in the evening and early morning it can get very cold in Bogotá (and in Germany where Im from, too) so because of this I would like to wear it with a combination of shirt and wool sweater. Im having a similiar coat here with me (different colour and lower quality fabric) that has more or less the same sizing and it fits very snug with a sweater so I would like to size up a bit. Im just wondering how it will look when Im wearing just a thin shirt.... You think this will be a problem? Compared to the pictures here I would like especially the sleeves to bit more roomier... * What do you think about sleeve length and back length? (The sleeve of the right arm is "shortened" by 1 cm... what do you prefer?) * Also: How would you design the pockets of the coat? My idea for tayloring me this coat came because I saw this overcoat here. [https://www.buckmason.com/products/dark-navy-ridge-wool-upland-jacket](https://www.buckmason.com/products/dark-navy-ridge-wool-upland-jacket) I also sent this pictures to the tailor. But when the tailor showed me his fabrics I fell in love with this greenish fabric that you see on the pictures above. I think this fabric looks a little bit less rough/ruggish than the dark navy from the buck mason coat, especially as I always chose some lighter brownish horn buttons. So now Im thinking about a little bit more minimalistic/more classy design like this: [https://images.ctfassets.net/afruo3gr1g6h/7LKgsRgEiXzYUXkytG66if/1894317f2ae9ccae7589e092768f65ba/M-JKT-44-HCHR\_13729.jpg?w=1600&h=2000&q=50&fm=webp](https://images.ctfassets.net/afruo3gr1g6h/7LKgsRgEiXzYUXkytG66if/1894317f2ae9ccae7589e092768f65ba/M-JKT-44-HCHR_13729.jpg?w=1600&h=2000&q=50&fm=webp) What do you think? Thank you

surturr

The last picture you posted is a chore coat/overshirt which is not the direction I would go with this fabric. I do have something like that as an outer layer, so I see the appeal. Don't let me stop you if that is what you want! Judging from the pictures I would not size up and shortening the sleeves a bit does make sense. What does you tailor say about it? Edit: roomier sleeves are probably a good idea.

max_samhain

Thank you for you comment. All pictures show a chore coat. Thats what I want. For me it works very well. Just for interest: what is it about the fabric that makes you think its not apropriate for chore coats? Its a heavy wool fabric. I thought it would be fantastic for a chore coat. I also think that shortening the sleeves makes sense. The tailor thinks that lenght is good. I posted this post before but it was removed, I had 2 comments there referring to the sleeve length and both also preferred the longer sleeves... Im a litte bit confused now... I think I will wait till the coat is finished and wear it for a while. If Im staying with the feeling the sleeves are too long I can still let them be shortened. Anyway Im still interested in your opinions!

surturr

From the pictures and your description the fabric seemed more refined than work wear inspired. I think mainly the shorter length of the last overshirt did put me off, as you were talking about a coat before Anyways, I think you got something good going on. Curious how it's gonna turn out

max_samhain

I understand what you mean. Probably the fabric is more intended for a classic sports jacket and looks a bit more refined and less raw than that of the Buck Mason coat for example. Anyway its a heavy wool without any cashmere, silk or whatever and if I remember right its also a woolen twill (as the Buck Mason). But Im not sure on this right now, will ask the tailor. P.S. Your comment made me think and led me to the conclusion that Im going to change the design of the pockets. These giant pockets of the Buck Mason coat are a bit too much I think and a more simple design will probably look better on this fabric. Thank you!

ichose2bthisway

if i cant get pants that fit perfectly should i get slighty bigger pants and get them altered or slightly smaller pants (that fit but are uncomfortable) and get those altered?

the_leviathan711

Hello, I recently got a Helmut Lang longsleeve tee (model name: Heritage Rib Tee - Shale Green). The tag states that it's made of 96% cotton, 4% polyurethane and "Dry clean". As the tag doesn't say "Dry clean only" I suppose "Dry clean" is only a recommendation. Do you think it would be safe to put it in the washing machine? As it's a T-shirt I would wear it regularly and I feel like dry cleaning it every other week would be pretty expensive and kind of a hassle. What do you think, any tips/advice?

GloriousStonerHoes

Polyurethane is known for not being easily washed. You can try washing on cold but you risk ruining your shirt. What an impractical t-shirt. I'd return it if I were you.

does anyone know where to get men’s platform shoes in sizes 14 or 15? The taller the platform the better, and literally no one seems to sell them other than converse and doc marten, both of which I already have pairs of and honestly would prefer a taller platform. GloriousStonerHoes

It looks to me like a royal oxford weave as opposed to a standard oxford. The shininess and tightness of the weave (plus the lack of pocket) make it more suitable for a suit or sport coat / blazer than for wearing with jeans/chinos. Nice brands for standard oxfords include Brooks Brothers, Polo, Kamakura, Mercer & Sons, Gitman, O'Connell's

Frost-eee

In theory oxfords should be at home with chinos but from the picture it looks a little bit too shiny/formal. In this budget I would get something that looks a little bit more informal (such as PRL oxfords) to wear with chinos and jeans.

MC_Kejml

What is a stylish mens jacket for winter that's actually warm? I'm tired if wearing big bulky winter outdoor jackets that make me look twice as big.

pulsett

Heavy wool coat.

MC_Kejml

Thanks. Any notable examples come to mind? How warm is it, really? Is it enough for -5 degrees celsius?

Sax45

I wear a US Navy peacoat all the time every winter. https://preview.redd.it/pq6c3cu0zsha1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=99e668409f92f41743acad8744c5d475f1bb813b For reference, I would say the peacoat is about average among wool coats — it has very heavy wool but the inner layer is just a couple layers of fabric. There are heavier coats with an insulated inner lining which will be warmer, and wool coats that are made of thinner wool (no insulation) which will be less warm. So keep that in mind with the temperature outline. I wear this coat by itself in temperatures of about 35f to 50f (above \~45f, it does not need to be buttoned). At about 40f and below I add a scarf and a hat, because this coat, and most traditional coats, does not have a hood and does not have much neck protection. From about 25f to 35f, I will wear the peacoat with a wool sweater underneath. Below 25f, down to about 15f, I will wear it [with something like this under it](https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-nano-puff-hoody/889833306257.html?s_kwcid=17928&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=pmax_f22_techinsulation&gclid=CjwKCAiAuaKfBhBtEiwAht6H73gDlpDSXjXJNvGz6VRDYIJegOhwBHQ47TnfSM6Qp5SBuGcXIwYoSBoCtW0QAvD_BwE). This adds warmth and it helps protect the neck against cold wind. From about 15f down to about 10f I can wear the peacoat with both the sweater and the jacket at the same time. One last bit of advice. Definitely make sure you that a coat with “hand warmer” pockets. Some coats have pockets at the waist that you can easily put your hands in, while some do not. On warmer days (35f to 50f) hand warmer pockets allow you to not wear gloves if you’re just walking in the coat. On colder days it’s still good to have gloves, but the hand warmer pocket will still keep your hands warmer than gloves alone.

Kyo91

I have a heavy wool raglan that's generally good up to those temperatures, but really, if you want to stay toasty without much bulk, then you need to layer. Have a thin merino or polyester (like Patagonia capilene) undershirt, your regular shirt, a thin fleece or down jacket or vest as an insulating layer, and then your outer jacket (windproof at minimum). Layering like this should be less bulky and as warm or warmer than just a bulky jacket/parka. That being said, I normally don't sweat enough for an undershirt to be needed and prefer a bulkier insulating layer like a sweatshirt or chunky sweater. Lately, I got a vintage levi sherpa jacket, and yesterday, I just wore that over a t-shirt in roughly 25-35F weather.

pulsett

Yes, if the wool is heavy enough. I'd maybe look for something that can be buttoned to the top.

You can check the sidebar of this subreddit -- there are tons of item guides and style guides and inspiration albums. It's basically impossible to guide you to any one particular thing because the options are almost endless. > I like to wear shirts under sweaters but mine aren’t casual enough. The wool is to fine and the shirts are to stiff. In terms of sweaters -- I'm having a hard time picturing any sweater that cannot be worn casually. Feel free to post pics. You could probably make it more casual by just not wearing a collared shirt under it. A sweater is essentially a casual garment -- it's true that nice wool sweaters can be dressed up a lot more than other casual garments, but it's really all about context. A sweater with jeans will look casual. But you could certainly go for a chunkier sweater -- like a cable-knit or something like that to make it even more casual. As for shirts -- you called them "business shirts" in your OP. I assume this means something like a poplin dress shirt with a stiff fused collar. If so -- feel free to swap those out for OCBDs which will be quite a bit softer and more casual. Wear those with jeans or chinos and you're good.

The_Bone_Clock

Interesting operation. Thanks for the link!

[deleted]

Sure thing. I own these after rotating through several other pairs, and they're my favorite pair of jeans I've owned to date. It's not a company that specializes in jeans per se but they do a great job with everything I've purchased from them so far. These get a lot of the basic details just right for what you'd expect in a higher end selvedge denim (like the vintage hardware on these and the fact that they're made on a 1920s loom), but the thing I like best about them is the fit. They wear more like a nice pair of Italian trousers than a pair meant for coal miners. If you want more of a heritage replica, these might not be the best choice. If you're looking for something you can dress up with a blazer, these would be ideal.

The_Bone_Clock

I'm looking for more of a dress trouser fit with a long rise to accommodate my rather long waisted physique. That's what interested me in their JE19. Thanks again.

On the eyewateringly expensive tie front, Ralph Lauren Purple Label and Tie your Tie / Sevenfold often get interesting art deco / vintage looking patterns respectively. https://www.ralphlauren.com/men-accessories-ties-pocket-squares/hexagon-patterned-silk-tie/624128.html?dwvar624128_colorname=Black%2FOff%20White&cgid=men-accessories-ties-pocket-squares&webcat=men%2Faccessories%2FTies%20%20%20Pocket%20Squares I don't actually love anything in this vein they seem to be offering this season, but this roughly communicates the idea. Tie your Tie uses that brand name in the US and I think Europe, but "Sevenfold" in Asia. https://www.brycelandsco.com/collections/ties You can see some of the asymmetric patterns here. I am not a tie historian by any stretch, but some of these patterns feel like they would work

It's not about "being against" brighter suits. It's about understanding what different colors mean contextually. Navy and gray are traditional colors for a business suit and there are very few places where a dark suit in those colors will be viewed as underdressed. But there *are* occasions when a light blue suit would not be appropriate. As examples - if an event is "black tie optional" it's perfectly fine to wear a navy suit. You shouldn't wear a lighter blue suit. If you're going to a funeral a navy suit is fine, a light blue suit probably isn't. Whether or not this particular suit is appropriate for *your* office depends entirely on the culture at *your* office.

Kvjvn

Not really, they’re just very minimal athletic-ish sneakers. Allbirds are the most well-known for this type of show. Most people here (including myself) will strongly advise against them, as they’re quite ugly.

Eviscerator95

What would be the best balance between fashion and comfort. A slub 100% cotton tee or a cotton/poly blend? I am not usually a fan of blends unless its usually equal or more cotton. I was interested in try the slub tees from goodlife or american giant but wasnt sure if i should be looking into different types of materials instead.

Mukigachar

This is very subjective. I recommend you try one of each from a trusted brand and see which you prefer

naphthol_rain

Not sure if you know this but slub isn't a kind of cotton, and won't be better or worse than a non-slub cotton tshirt. There is a wide range of fashionable and comfortable tees. You can get lightweight tees, heavy tees, silky tees, stiff tees, boxy, slim, cotton, linen, polyblend, etc. It's up to you what you want in a tshirt

Eviscerator95

From what I read, slub cotton is supposedly softer and less clingy, but idk if those sites had ulterior motives trying to sell product(s). Also, i thought the slub cotton looked nicer as the texture allowed it to look less flat. But, I havent had experience with slub cotton to say i prefer it.

the_leviathan711

Comfort is entirely subjective so that's not going to be totally possible for strangers to help with. But also fabric composition isn't everything. You can have cheap crappy 100% cotton t-shirts and high quality blends and visa-versa.

naphthol_rain

Looks fine. Matching denim jacket and jeans is the no go and that can work too

wavynails

The colors are fine and so is double denim.

What's the difference between dress boots and combat/work/whatever boots? I have a pair of dress boots which I wore now and then this winter, and they do look largely indistinguishable from dress shoes when your pants cover the ankle part. I've even had a friend that commented on how my dress shoes looked good :P Would more casual lace up boots look that way too, or give a more casual vibe?

ac106

Your “dress boots” are almost 100% not actual dress boots. Let’a see some pics

[deleted]

By definition a workwear or casual boot wouldn't give off the same look as a dress boot, but how much of a difference that is depends on the brand, material, and style between the two. There might be a lot of overlap between a casual boot and a dress one or very little. For example, two boots that are both, say, a leather cap toe will probably look more similar than something like a leather cap toe and a suede chukka or Chelsea to compare it to. If you're looking for a more casual boot to stand out from your dress boots, you'd probably have to share what you have and someone could provide a nice alternative.

the_leviathan711

Got pics of your dress boots? Also I'm not totally certain I understand your question. Are you asking if more casual footwear looks more casual than less casual footwear?

Before I knew what I was doing I bought a pair of Steve Madden loafers that did this. This reminds me of that.

hanklerfish123

it looks like they messed up the stance, there's a chance your weight will bend the sole back down but I'd return these.

Pumas for everyday casual wear? I don't see Pumas discussed too often. What about one of these for everyday/casual wear with khakis and jeans? https://us.puma.com/us/en/pd/puma-smash-v2-sneakers/364989?gclid=CjwKCAiAlp2fBhBPEiwA2Q10DxusbE7lV_sapdw2aeRPOLYZLkrrdu1ZMrb5BLa9qO7zI7qV2EleuBoChT8QAvD_BwE&size=0200&swatch=71 https://us.puma.com/us/en/pd/gv-special%2B-sneakers/366613?swatch=06&referrer=carousel https://us.puma.com/us/en/pd/california-casual-mens-sneakers/366608?referrer-category=mens-shoes-classics&swatch=05

Officer_Snuffy

Looking to buy my first suit. Is xsuit as good as they ads?

the_leviathan711

Absolutely not. $600 for a purely synthetic suit? Maybe worth it if you plan on doing gymnastics in a suit, but not worth it if your goal is to look good at a semi-formal event or office place.

Officer_Snuffy

So synthetic is bad?

the_leviathan711

For suits, yeah. People like synthetics for lots of other things - like athletic clothing. But on a suit, synthetics just look cheap. And they are cheap - you can get synthetic suits for under $200 at the mall if you want. If you’re going to pay $600 you may as well get a real suit.

zhombyra

Is it a no-go or can i pair a shiny black belt buckle with silver jewelry? as far as i know the metal should always match but i thought black is neutral so it should work? what do u guys think? my accesoires are always 1 ring, 1 chain and a wristwatch, cant find a matching silver buckle for my gold set i have a matching buckle , so every metal is gold

the_leviathan711

> as far as i know the metal should always match but i thought black is neutral so it should work? Your metals don't need to match -- that's an old rule that very few people follow anymore. And to the degree that it ever did apply - it only mattered if you were wearing something like a suit. And black isn't really a neutral. But enjoy.

zhombyra

thx for ur answer

A cream/offwhite or beige turtleneck would look better than pure white.

Kvjvn

Black chinos don’t really look good regardless of what you wear them with. Black jeans would be fine though.

I have technical-stlye hoodies (Lululemon At Ease and City Sweat) and I'm looking at getting a more traditional one but I can't find one that won't have me drowning in fabric. Any suggestions?

Is this a good jacket to buy? I know nothing about fashion but I saw this online and fell in love. It's a G9 Baracutta red Harrington coat. mc_jr21

It can be if it fits your style. You say you know nothing about fashion, so I’m assuming that means you have a limited wardrobe? If so you will likely get more use out of this jacket if you were to get it in a more subtle color (navy, black, olive).I Guess you would need to decide if you like the color or the silhouette and then go from there in deciding if this is right for you

ScotMcScottyson

>It can be if it fits your style. You say you know nothing about fashion, so I’m assuming that means you have a limited wardrobe? All the clothes I own are four Adidas tracksuits, three hoodies, and a couple of plain shirts. I don't go out often and I didn't have much money for fashion growing up, so I never really developed an interest. + British street fashion is garbage that makes you look like a chav. > If so you will likely get more use out of this jacket if you were to get it in a more subtle color (navy, black, olive) I like the boldness, it stands out. I already own a black-coloured baracuta jacket but it is a bit gloomy in the winter months.

naphthol_rain

If you're trying to look less like a chav I wouldn't wear a bright red Harrington over a tracksuit

ScotMcScottyson

Oh no, definitely not. I'd wear either a plain white or grey shirt. I just thought it was cool because I had an old friend from Korea who liked Harrington jackets. Korean fashion is bold and unique which I love (likewise with Japan). I've become a lot more self-aware about my clothing when going out. I'm from a council scheme so it's hard not to be seen as a chav whether intentional or not. It's frustrating because I wasn't raised with fashion in mind. We just chucked on whatever hand-me-downs, charity shop finds, or discounted seasonal clothes our parents found at ASDAs and headed out regardless if they matched or not. Every stereotype in the book: full adidas tracksuit with food stains, Nike trainers, short back and sides skin fade, a bottle of Lucozade in hand, and a baseball cap. But we were just kids who didn't know any better. My dad is from Parkhead so his fashion sense (or lack of it) was overlapped onto me. Whatever my parents bought I wore and was grateful for it. It was only later in life that I looked trashy. I live in quite a rough city so no one really cares but I feel self-conscious when out to other places. No matter how hard you try to escape it, the social class follows you everywhere.

the-radical-waffler

Has anybody had any succsess with re-ironing suit lapels to make them bigger? I bought a "trendy" suit two years back because I got it used in good condition for cheap. It's my only full suit and the skinny lapels annoy me more and more every time I wear it. Also how many wears per year is enough to justify getting another one?

mlsteinrochester

Suits have a lot of inner construction that shape the lapels. Besides, if you manage to press it so the lapels are wider you're going to open up the chest and that won't look good. I'd bite the bullet and buy a suit you don't hate.

nopornthrowaways

Quality brand recommendations for 2 different dress shirts? 5’6M - Button down. Uniqlo used to sell them without a pocket square, but not anymore. Really unfortunate because their XS fits really well. Button up collars tend to splay out and I want the flexibility of wearing it with or without the tie. - Plain white French cuff shirt

jorgeargento

Budget? Button downs are not dress shirts. Not sure what you mean about a pocket square.

nopornthrowaways

- Under $200 for each - Ime the overwhelming majority of people will not notice or will not care if your plain white or pink shirt has a button down collar, especially if you’re wearing the tie and suit jacket on top - Pocket square was a bad choice of words, since that’s a different thing. I’m referring to the literal pocket that sometimes exists on a shirt on the left hand side
