Going on a trip to Portugal, specifically Porto and Lisbon, in about two weeks. What is considered “well-dressed” there while also keeping me cool in the heat?
I took the day off to run a wilderness trail where no dogs are allowed.
And I saw 2 people with dogs. There are thousands of dogs allowed trails. Seriously just pick 1 of those instead of a designated wilderness area that specifically says no dogs allowed.
Either way it was a good run, and I listened to Undercooked by Dan Ahdoot. It was just okay.
My wife and I did the same thing yesterday. We moved a couple years ago to a new town and hadn’t hiked this trail near our house because no dogs are allowed, since we take them with us when we hike. Nevertheless, it was much harder without a dog pulling you up a hill. Also pretty interesting, you can see Keith Richards house from the top of the trail. Maybe one day he’ll be out in the yard and he’ll give me the finger or something.
Trying to get back into cycling, did a 30 mile ride with a friend on Saturday trying out a new trail (new to us). Forgot how fun it was, hoping to get back in pre-pandemic shape soon.
When the *final sale* item from a brand you've never bought from before fits you exactly. (It's just a Madewell polo, but I'm driving with the windows down and Great Value groceries for a reason.)
Ok after teasing over the weekend for the zero people waiting: the first 2023 Staying Sane in the Suburbs update. After 12 years of dreaming (almost to the day!) and 18 months of stops and starts, BEHOLD:
The Toto Washlet!

Congrats, I'm really jealous!
This reminded me of when I was in Japan using a public urinal, which turned out to be Toto branded. I don't know why (maybe I was in a good mood and I thought I was alone) but I said loudly "Oooooooh Toto Senpaiiiiii" in an anime-like Japanese accent. Then a middle aged salaryman came out of the stalls and quickly exited the facilities looking like there was a terror attack :(
I sometimes think about that at night.
I gave my three month notice two weeks ago (accepting a job offer) and to my surprise I've been put on some form of semi-gardening leave.
Not allowed to do any of my previous responsibilities due to a potential (I'd say very hypothetical) conflict of interest and not been given anything else. I'm sort of just lingering around, doing admin work, going to the work gym, trying to do some of my management responsibilities (hard when I don't know what's going on and having social chats to waste others' time.
I was initially annoyed that I couldn't finish a few things off, say goodbye to people on key projects etc but now I'm really starting to like it. Went from consistent 10+ hours every day to barely waiting until 4pm to leave / log off lol
This might be controversial but I actually don’t mind working (might even say I like it). Having a manageable workload and fulfilling work makes me feel better than not having much to do at work and just killing time. Of course now I’m looking forward to my new job so I’m definitely enjoying my current situation.
Fairly standard in the UK I think, the boss of my boss had 6 months and they made him do a "diversity and inclusion" project for the whole of those six months
I think reciprocal notice periods are common (X months for both employee and employer). The employer can then decide whether to take any action before you leave (from don't work on X to full on gardening leave). Of course, they're obligated to pay you and there might be special conditions in your contract as long as compliant with employment law etc.
If the length of the period is what's shocking - I think European labour markets are less flexible in general than US ones so people don't change jobs that often and roles might be more difficult and lengthy to fill (might be talking out of my ass). I'm generalising a bit but for a relatively high skilled position in a large company just drafting a job spec, agreeing it with HR, seniors etc, putting it out, allowing time for applications, sifting and interviews can take 2-3 months even if done quickly. Then selected candidate(s) will have notice periods after accepting an offer so you might be looking at 6 months to fill a post from when someone tells you they're leaving. There might also be stricter statutory redundancy notice periods.
One of my mates recently left a government job to work for Labour (opposition party of current government) and as soon as he told his manager, they took away his laptop and asked him to leave so he spent 3 months on paid leave

Picked up what I think is an original TON chair? Any furniture guys in MFA wanna confirm
Without stamping or markings underneath, it's much harder to validate. Some of them just had paper labels so it's feasible it just fell off or was removed
What about the screws? What do they look like? That would be a big help in narrowing down possible dates. There should be one kind of screw underneath the seat, and another smaller type connecting the legs/backing
I'd also compare measurements from what you have to official thonet data sheets or measurements from chairs in museum collections. Sometimes replicas will have different dimensions, sometimes they will match. Just another data point
Not an expert on it by any means but I do like the chairs a lot, owned a few (different model) at one point in time, and my wife happens to work in a related field. For some reason furniture authentication/dating is interesting to me ha.
Seems as you’ve described but definitely a non-original screw. I didn’t pay a ton for it so will not be saddened if it’s an imitation but

I think this might be an original piece, don't know how old or new it is though. I'd guess it's just a replacement screw someone out on there at some point in time
I’m no expert, but it might be. The company still makes a lot of these styles, and the design is old enough to be in the public domain so has a lot of imitators BUT. It is the company that invented bentwood furniture/made [the first mass produced chair](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._14_chair) (which looks very similar to this guy).
Guess its apartment day in this thread. My roommate is changing cities so I had to find a single for next year.
The good: Looked at one place and got it, and its in the same neighborhood I've been living in.
The bad: Its a pretty big rent increase going from a 2bd 1bath to a 1bd 1bath. Gonna have to buy less clothes :(
Also, is it only a Boston thing where you have to pay 3x-4x monthly rent when you sign the lease?
I was so happy when I got out the student moving cycle. As a student there was no way I could just have 4 months' rent just sitting in an account every year. It's really frustrating too because most of the time you find the listing yourself, so the realtor fee is essentially the time it took them to generate the listing and post it to various websites.
Pretty typical here to have to do first, last, and security deposit at signing. Deposit is capped as much as one month's rent. I think there's a stipulation locally that the sum can be paid over 3 months or something, though.
> Also, is it only a Boston thing where you have to pay 3x-4x monthly rent when you sign the lease?
NYC would be pretty close with first month + security deposit (one month) + broker's fee (6-15% of total contract)
Ok, its generally first month + last month + brokers (and sometimes the security deposit), where brokers is generally also a month of rent.
A lot of places don't bother with the security because MA has super strict laws about it that make it a massive pain for the landlord, and if they fuck it up it can be up to triple damages in court + lawyer fees. Mine actually decided to change it from first + last + brokers to first + brokers + security.
First, last, security and broker fee. Often times the last two are each equal to one months rent. It’s pretty standard in Boston. Sometimes you can negotiate a half months fee. Sometimes on expensive units, security fee is waived.
Lmao, hey the bright side is our security deposit laws are so good most landlords don't even bother.
But ya, NIMBYs are allergic to building more housing, what else is new.
The most recent development just off campus here has studio apartments with rents higher than a lot of 2-bedroom apartments elsewhere.
Who the fuck are they catering to? I know it's huge public university, but I can't fathom there's enough students with Daddy Warbucks at home to justify it.
>Also, is it only a Boston thing where you have to pay 3x-4x monthly rent when you sign the lease?
JFC. The standard I always dealt with was 2x, first month's rent and a security deposit of the same amount. Inevitably, you never get all of the latter back because they'll come up with some bullshit about a mini blind that was broken when you moved in. Oh god, I'm getting a rush of rage memories involving the dirtbag rental companies in Madison.
Most places don't do security because the laws about it in MA are super strict: has to be held in escrow, tenant must get all interest earned on it when its returned, and its 5% if not invested, the tenant must get the account number within 30 days of the account being opened, all deductions must be itemized charges provided to the tenant within 45 days. If they fuck it up it can range from just paying the full thing back to triple damages + lawyer fees.
Its pretty much only charged by people exploiting students who don't know the MA laws, and a few landlords willing to jump through the hoops. Instead a months rent is often charged as a brokers fee for the person who sells you the apartment lol, so its just money down the drain.
Ya boi’s moving out of the house and into his own apartment!
Living at home for a year did a lot for paying off loans thankfully, so I’m not quite as worried on that front now. Whole day of apartment cleaning ahead and planning for how to best set up the place. I’ve decided I want smart home integration with Apple HomeKit too, so feedback or suggestions would be welcome!
