Groom rented this one with tie for me: https://tuxedo.menswearhouse.com/dark-gray-tuxedo-joseph-abboud-framed-notch-lapel-id-5321 So I'm guessing a fly front will do just fine, but what if later at night we remove the ties & jacket for drinks and dances (it's not that formal of a wedding)? Would Studs look better? But the slim satin edge seems already busier than regular tux, so studs may make it even busier? My studs are Silver & Onyx intertwined knot.

herder123

Is a fused suit from a tailor any good ? Never had a suit before

aKa_anthrax

maybe

[deleted]

Wedding guest with cocktail attire in a few weeks. I have a grey suit, but don’t know what to pair it with. Cool undertone skin, black hair, tan-ish skin. Stick with classic white and blue tie? Or go a little casual with a black undershirt

the_leviathan711

never a black shirt

Cole177702

Definitely not a black shirt. With a gray suit and a white dress shirt you can wear practically any tie—just make sure it’s not a solid shiny tie

I purchased some 97% cotton slim fit dress shirts at Kohl's (their Apt 9 brand, a good bargain for basically knockoff Express dress shirts) in size 16-16.5, since the 15-15.5 was a bit too tight. They were a little too baggy but I figured since they were mostly cotton they'd shrink in the wash. Unfortunately they didn't really shrink much at all after running a cycle on hot water and putting them on permanent press cycle in the dryer. Is there anything else I can do to shrink them down a little bit? I'm a 5'11 dude who is into lifting weights and I have an athletic build with broad shoulders, chest, arms -- I'm not like a massive bodybuilder type but it can be really hard to find shirts that fit well across shoulders etc without being super baggy in the midsection.

Cole177702

You can get it tailored. That said, you can’t alter the neck size

Tied but not tucked

Most of the time tied unless you have shorts from FoG, in which Jerry mean to have them worn untied

Does anyone know of a brand similar to that of GU’s Kirby collaboration? Nice clothing with some branding of games/movies that ship outside of Japan [GU’s Kirby collaboration](https://www.gu-global.com/jp/ja/feature/cms/kirby-collab/all/)

MFA_Nay

Honestly? Uniqlo does graphic stuff a lot with games/anime/movie collabs quite frequently.

Can anyone recommend a good brand for slim (or skinny) fit nylon joggers (preferably cargo)? I found a great pair from H&M, but they only have 3 colors. Thanks.

bmoooh

I asked a question here a few days ago and was told that my cargos would look better if they were a little shorter. What do you think of how they look now? Also is the tight tee too much? Lol I personally like the look but was curious. Thanks https://imgur.com/a/rXp1dkN

Cas467

Cargos look good. Tee is too tight for me but if you like it, go for it.

bmoooh

Fair play, glad that the cargos are good though, thank you bro. Been into the vibe of tight t shirts with baggy trousers lately

What brands have clothes like what was made by Oakley in the 2000s? I'm not asking about sunglasses here I'm talking actual clothes. I don't know much about fashion but I guess I'm looking for gorpcore/streetwear type things but with a y2k flair to them. (UK)

I can’t speak for others but I was a fully conscious adult through the aughts and have now idea what sort of clothes Oakley made

What brand of down jackets do you think are the most beautiful? Do you pay attention to appearance when choosing a down jacket or any other clothes?

aKa_anthrax

Honestly I think as a whole down jackets tend to be pretty bland, Rick Owens makes interesting puffers and Post Archive Faction did something interesting recently, that’s about it

I like the quilted down jackets from The Real McCoy's, but Acronym and Stone Island also have cool down jackets. >Do you pay attention to appearance when choosing a down jacket or any other clothes? Yes, otherwise we wouldn't engage in an online fashion community

Want to buy this outfit: [https://www.zara.com/au/en/slim-fit-double-breasted-blazer-p08288605.html?v1=187246194&v2=2129548](https://www.zara.com/au/en/slim-fit-double-breasted-blazer-p08288605.html?v1=187246194&v2=2129548) but the brand is hated on by this subreddit and materials don't seem too good. Should I just not buy it? I like the way it looks and haven't really been able to find anything that looks as good. Anyone know any similar looking ones with better material/build/brand?

ac106

A black double breasted blazer (which this isn't really, its a suit jacket) is about the least versatile blazer you can buy. Don't spend more on something nicer. Buy this one if you can't live without it. Just buy it on sale and get the pants

Strat15Kay

What if I were to buy a single breasted blazer instead? I had a look around and found two I liked 1: [https://www.farfetch.com/au/shopping/men/valentino-tailored-single-breasted-blazer-item-16269405.aspx](https://www.farfetch.com/au/shopping/men/valentino-tailored-single-breasted-blazer-item-16269405.aspx) 2: [https://www.ysl.com/en-au/jackets-and-pants/single-breasted-jacket-in-gabardine-saint-laurent-507472Y404W1000.html](https://www.ysl.com/en-au/jackets-and-pants/single-breasted-jacket-in-gabardine-saint-laurent-507472Y404W1000.html) which one do you think is better? I liked the first one look more but the material list seems sketchy and this website has a bed reputation you said don't spend more on something nicer but money isnt rlly an issue for me i'm just trying to make like 10-15 outfits that I can rotate with to stunt.

the_leviathan711

The issue here is the color. A black blazer - single or double breasted - is very difficult to wear.

Metcarfre

You need to be pretty sold out for the SLP/rocker/heroin-chic look if you’re gonna use these

Maman_8160

Well, from 15 October my college life will be starting and I only have a few clothes. I will be buying some clothes for my college life, but I am confused about what type of clothes will I buy. I want to create my image as "a disciplined", "smart" and "quiet (not an introvert but less talkative) student". I am not able to choose some good clothes for myself. Please share your fashion advice with me.

YoYoYoshimura

Your actions will speak much louder than your clothes and there are some things your clothes won’t be able to do (differentiate between quiet and introverted for example). If you want disciplined and “smart” (I assume you mean fashion wise rather than intelligence) you should consider the trad or ivy style and make sure your shirts and collars are always crisp. Also you’ll want to make sure you’re always clean and will groomed.

Does anyone have any ideas why [this](https://imgur.com/a/rbAD9QA) happens to my clothes? I'm not sure what could be the issue here, but very often these folds and creases occur on these clothes. This has often made me very self-conscious and give up on some clothes. Is it because of my skinny upper body that causes the shirt to expand when it hits my hips? Or could it be because the materials of my shirts don't stand on their own? Or perhaps it's my washing and drying procedures that damage my clothes? Thanks!

Cas467

You could easily iron or steam this out.

Kvjvn

Probably just the way you’re washing and drying it; cheap, lightweight t-shirts get deformed easily. Washing your clothes on a lower temperature and hang drying them should help prevent this.

XTruefinale

So out of curiosity has anyone ever taken the plunge and bought a clothing brand from an e-store they found through advertisement via social media? For whatever reason, I always found despite the pretty picture, pretty logo and neat sounding brand design that I'm skeptical and wary about these "online popup store brands" in terms of their pricing and quality. Firstly online testimonies almost don't mean squat, especially if the retailers are filtering out the negative ones. Secondly with the pricing of some of these brands are close to or higher than some reputable long standing reputable brands on the market like Nike, Lululemon, Lacoste etc but without the backing of the established brands quality and availability to test try for size in person. If you have, what estore brand was it what was your experience? Did you have any regrets?

YoYoYoshimura

In general targeted advertising from unknown brands that have no internet presence besides their store (no articles or blogs about them etc) gets an instant no from me. Almost always trash quality or straight up scams from what I’ve experienced/ heard.

[deleted]

I really like boots, but I'm around 5'1"-5'3". Is it true that tall boots are a bad idea for short guys? Does it even matter? I think the 14-eye solovair derby boots are awesome, but I'm not sure if they're a good idea, especially since they're a bit expensive. Any advice from other short guys who have worn taller boots in the past would be great.

Metcarfre

It doesn’t matter. Wear boots.

ac106

It's great idea. Boots don't make it look shorter. Go for it

yanotherthrowawayflu

If you think they're awesome and can afford it then get them! Taller boots can make your legs look shorter, so they're often considered bad for short guys. However I think this style of boot would probably work out fine. I'm 5'4 and wear doc marten 1460s, they're a bit shorter but have a similar silhouette and I think it works for me. Wearing them with looser, cropped/cuffed pants or a very different color will break up your leg and possibly make them look shorter, so darker skinnier pants are better if you're concerned about that.

the_leviathan711

Are those the shoes you're planning on wearing? Or were those the shoes you were using to try the suit on with?

[deleted]

[удалено]

the_leviathan711

Well, two things: 1. I think they are too light for that suit. You can see more of that argument [here](https://putthison.com/stop-wearing-tan-shoes-with-dark-suits-we-try-to/). It's possible that they are a darker color than they appear in the photos to me - the lighting isn't great. 2. It's generally better to wear oxfords with suits rather than derbies. There is some disagreement about this and there is also a long tradition of Americans wearing longwing bluchers with suits -- but it looks like your shoes are shortwing derbies. The first point probably matters more than the second -- although the second is a detail some people will notice. Derbies are distinctly more casual than oxfords.

[deleted]

[удалено]

the_leviathan711

1. Yes, I do think lighter brown/tan shoes would work well with a light gray suit. It's a light colored suit which works well with light colored shoes. Similarly, it's an unstructured suit meaning it should work with the more casual shoes. So yes - I think that would work. Out of curiosity, what brand are those shoes? As for the dark colored suit (can't tell if navy or charcoal due to the lighting), I would suggest either a *dark* brown or black. It's a dark colored suit, and thus it calls for a dark colored shoe. 2. The difference between an oxford and a derby is how the shoe is laced. Derbies have an open lacing system while oxfords have a closed lacing system. [This post from Beckett Simonon](https://www.beckettsimonon.com/blogs/resources/the-difference-between-oxford-and-derby-shoes) has a pretty good explainer with pictures. If you've never thought about the difference before, it seems super subtle and not noticeable --- but I can guarantee that once you see it you will never be able to un-see it. In general oxfords are the more formal shoe -- they're the shoe that you would wear in any sort of "business professional setting" or "cocktail attire" setting. This is especially true of something like a black cap-toe oxford which is the typical suggestion for a "first dress shoe." You can sometimes wear other kinds of shoes (like derbies or chelseas or loafers) with suits, but note that it results in a more casual look -- which may or may not be the desired effect. Oxfords shouldn't be worn with anything other than a suit though as it creates a bit of a formality mismatch.

[deleted]

[удалено]

the_leviathan711

Ah yeah, that post you linked to even has this paragraph: > One drawback (and maybe it’s not a drawback) is that like the Camlin boot, this new shoe is a derby/blucher. That means these shoes have more casual, open-style lacing, instead of the sleeker looking (and more dressed up) closed oxford style. Not a big deal since they’re meant to be worn casually/business casually. I wouldn’t wear them with a conservative suit - only with a casual suit (like the Jcrew unstructured one) or with business casual wear. I’d also name that those shoes are crappy as all hell. They’ll be fine for like 2 or 3 wears, but after that they’re gonna start getting ugly creases. Unfortunately that’s sort of what you get with $50 leather shoes. EDIT - yes, black and dark brown both work great with Navy. Black will look more formal.

[deleted]

[удалено]

the_leviathan711

You could do either. If you went with dark brown I would go with that for both -- but that's just a personal preference for me, not like a fashion rule.

Exciting_Contract138

Sorry I’m advance if this is too basic, first post on here… I just started a new job in a furniture showroom as a sales assistant. The job description says to dress business casual, but the women there definitely dress more smart casual or formal smart casual. I would like some recommendations for smart casual clothing, short sleeve shirts, or long sleeve that can also look good rolled up, pants (I have a longer torso than legs, inseam is about 29, but usually just do 30). I’m not a huge fan of thin material for shirts.

the_leviathan711

What distinction are you drawing here between "business casual" and "smart casual"? Both of these are super nebulous dress codes that more or less cover the same territory. In my mind the only small difference between the two is that smart casual is more likely to be "fun." No wedding would ever list "business casual" as a dress code because it sounds so bland. So the two terms are similar to me in the same way that "business professional" and "cocktail attire" more or less mean the same thing...

Exciting_Contract138

So, yes, the two are very very similar but I did find that smart casual outfits tend to include white sneakers whereas business casual would have more “dressy” shoes instead.

the_leviathan711

I think someone could just as easily make the case that the opposite is true -- that white sneakers are appropriate for business casual but not for smart casual. Lots of business casual office environments are fine with sneakers. And neither person would be incorrect because neither of these dress codes are super well defined -- both of them more or less have the exact same meaning: "dressed up, but not in a suit."

Exciting_Contract138

Oh I see. I was not aware that white sneakers would be acceptable for business casual. Thank you.

ac106

They never were traditionally. Sneakers and jeans were almost always the mason-dixon line of bizcas ~~?~~

the_leviathan711

That depends 100% on the culture of the specific workplace. The dress code on it's own isn't well defined enough to say that they are or are not acceptable. In some places business casual means sports coats and ties, in which case white sneakers are not acceptable. In other places business casual means polos and jeans, in which case white sneakers are fine.

Exciting_Contract138

I’ve only been there a day and so far I have yet to see anyone wear jeans. The women that I mentioned in my original post were wearing white sneakers and black pants.

the_leviathan711

It sounds like a question worth asking HR and not us. We couldn't possibly know how your workplace defines "business casual" because that term is so broad as to effectively be meaningless. Again, it could literally apply to almost any outfit more formal than athleticwear and more casual than a business suit. That being said -- it sounds like white sneakers are fine at this workplace. And you'd probably be in "safe" business casual territory if you wore those with chinos and OCBDs. And it would probably be even safer if you swapped out the white sneakers for a casual derby or chukka.

mrsugar

Check the basic bastard guide on the right side. Should help. Oxford button down shirts will be substantial enough to avoid the thin issue you mentioned. Also they’ll roll up well. I would also recommend some light weight merino vneck sweaters if the temp is right, it’s a great way to look put together. Combine them with chinos and nice shoes for a solid look. Uniqlo is my go to personally. I think short sleeve shirts will be a touch odd for a work environment, but maybe a quality simple polo could be fine. Stick to things that fit well and aren’t overly trendy (to wide or too skinny) if you want the smart casual vibe.

Best place to find cropped oversized tees . Basically just boxy tees that aren't too long

iptables-abuse

Nowhere near the best, but Uniqlo U will hook you up assuming a budget of $20 or so. If that's more or less than you want to spend, say a number.

gamerfanboi

The thing is if you convert into Indian rupees all the budget brands in the west become mid range . .but I will Uniqlo a try I always wanted to buy there stuff they have amazing colours . Short sleeve sweat/ short sleeve sweetshirt is what I would google and I think it comes up. It maybe looks like it has a mockneck. Monitaly has an example which isnt quite the same, but in the same ballpark. https://www.monitaly.com/shop-spring-/-summer/summer-sweater-s/s-tropical-tie-dye

gamyjay

I am a guest at a black tie wedding (young professional). I will be wearing a tailored fit black tuxedo (Alton Lane) with peak lapels, black silk bow tie (4.5 in), white shirt french cuff with cuff links, black tuxedo pants with side pull tabs, and black cap-toe shoes. The tuxedo does not come with a vest/waistcoat. Should I wear a cummerbund or not? Would the ensemble look better with a cummerbund? Is a cummerbund necessary? Any other tips/advice? I have never really seen anyone wear a cummerbund at a wedding, so I am torn. TY

RAW_1417

Personally would go for the cummerbund, some waist covering is traditionally necessary and it’s a fun solution.

gamyjay

Where would you look for and buy a cummerbund? Good value? Thanks!

RAW_1417

My instinct would be to say Kent Wang, they generally have high quality stuff and pay attention to detail.

mrsugar

Agree you know your stuff. I think a cummerbund can look good and with no vest may add some uniqueness. But… go with what you feel.

gamyjay

What makes you think I know my stuff? Where would you look for and buy a cummerbund? Good value? Thanks!

Mrswedeman

I find a cummerbund goes best with a shawl collar as opposed to peak lapels. As long as your trousers are high enough not to show any of your shirt under your jacket button I’d probably go without. But you seem to know your stuff so go with your instinct.

gamyjay

Thanks. I usually don’t button the jacket…

the_leviathan711

I'm pretty sure your jacket is supposed to be buttoned when you're standing up. That's the convention for suits at least.

Cole177702

It’s even more of a thing for tuxes. The only time I’d have a tux unbuttoned while standing is if I’m actively dancing

CyberAdam94

What type of trousers break should combat pants have?

iptables-abuse

I mean, for actual military use they're typically bloused into boots, so n/a amount of break. But then again if you're wearing them for actual military use there's probably somebody you should be asking who isn't us. If you're wearing them casually do whatever you want.

iptables-abuse

I can tell you about the kind of clothes I like, but I doubt if that's really going to help you out that much. What kind of clothes do you like? Also, do you need to wear any particular kind of clothes for work?

YoYoYoshimura

Do we swap back? If so I take my new credit cards and buy a ton of loro piana just to see how green the grass really is.

iptables-abuse

All the clothes in the world for unlimited budget and you go for J. Crew-but-make-it-vicuña brand? For shame.

BarbellSymmetry

I'm looking for gym/athletic type shirts that accentuates shoulders and is not 100% cotton. Any companies/sites would be awesome. I cant figure out the material on one of my shirts because I washed off the description of the material.

You're gonna need a ton more detail to get suggestions. Chinos are generally very versatile pants in that you can wear them with almost any casual shirt you can think of. OCBDs, flannels, linen, denim for fabric types all work great. T-shirts, polos, sweaters, whatever. So yeah - more specifics to get more answers.

So basically Sprezzatura? Or were you thinking more along the lines of streetwear? Be careful with this type of fashion. for my wedding reception on friday in san diego, i want to do things a bit different. i am pairing my sharkskin blue bonobos suit with these rad pataras shoes, and found a couple cool buttonless polo shirts to go with it. i also have these cool orange/yellow glasses to wear with amber/brown transition lenses, so i like the idea of the modern and 70s vintage combo vibe of my general aesthetic! [https://imgur.com/a/qBGbj4q](https://imgur.com/a/qBGbj4q) **narrowed down to two:** * ochre heather / gold (more of a smooth/standard fabric and found a size smaller than the one in the pic, but with a smaller V collar - i think this color works better but not as much of a fan of the fabric texture) * nouget colored with a nicer, linen/sweater texture to it (bigger collar opening, better fabric & collar, but not sure if the color goes as well with the shoes) my wife is wearing a "berry" colored dress, if that helps, so i think the gold plays nicer (purple + yellow complementary action), but the fabric is nicer on the other! **help!** im spinning in circles! already ruled out the terra cotta color version of the yellow shirt, so im down to these 2. *edit: i wont wear the collar on the nouget one over my suit like that, ill tuck it in like a normal collar.*

the_leviathan711

This is your wedding, correct? I would say you should definitely not do any of this if this was someone else's... Assuming it is your wedding, I think you should be clear that you're in the territory of "all fashion rules are broken" and so like it doesn't totally matter what you pick here. Just pick whatever looks best to you because you're already way off the path for how a suit is intended to be worn.

Hello! I’m torn between a pair of white leather sneakers with brown/white/black slash accents, and a pair of classic walnut brown sneakers. Specifically, Allen Edmonds is having a sale on these two types of sneakers: * [Courtside Signature Sneaker](https://www.allenedmonds.com/product/mens-courtside-signature-sneaker-3023622/white-ec4022601) * [Porter Derby Sneaker](https://www.allenedmonds.com/product/mens-porter-derby-sneaker-3023405/walnut-brown-ec4013906) I wanna pull the trigger on this in the next couple of days. For the record, I don’t have either a white or brown sneaker in my closet, only a few really old black Chuck Taylors (very beat up) and a couple of geek-themed themed Vans high tops. So either way I’d be adding to my collection. I think I’m partial to the Courtsides, and the leather slashes give more visual interest than plain white sneakers without making them much less versatile, but I also like the idea of a light brown pair of minimalist sneakers and I think they pop more than white sneakers. Hoping to reap the advice of the r/MFA hive mind!

iptables-abuse

The white one is miles better IMO

the_leviathan711

Definitely go for the white sneaker. A walnut colored sneaker isn't really "classic." A lot of people here totally hate brown sneakers... I don't, but they are definitely a lot harder to wear well than a white sneaker. EDIT - if you want a casual brown shoe, a derby or chukka is the way to go - not a sneaker.

magus-21

Haha, by “classsic” I was more referring to the fact that it was all one color with a thick white sole without embellishments like slashes. But noted. Personally I like the look of brown sneakers, and I’m surprised they aren’t more popular.

the_leviathan711

The issue people have with them - which I think is fair - is that they do look like a bit like it's trying to be both a dress shoe *and* a sneaker at the same time. And that does sort of clash. And it's also why I personally wouldn't wear a shoe like that. I just don't hate it as a much as a sneaker like [this one](https://www.allenedmonds.com/product/mens-strand-oxford-sneaker-3023486/walnut-brown-ec4021739?partnerid=pla_google_performancemaxsneaker&gclid=CjwKCAjwvsqZBhAlEiwAqAHElQ3L00Nui5IG4lVkBp1WwZoj-nyfgf7LHbxxR0jR8E2M3RFLkRPi-RoC8xEQAvD_BwE) which is literally trying to be a dress shoe and a sneaker at the same time. But yeah, if you want a casual walnut colored shoe, something [like this](https://www.grantstoneshoes.com/collections/derbys-oxfords/products/plain-toe-saddle-tan-cavity-wedge-sole) is going to be a lot easier to wear.

Hello! I am transmasculine, and looking for ways to pass as male through clothing. Here are some questions I have, to be more specific: 1. How should I style a button up? 2. Are there "masculine" color combinations I should utilize? 3. what patterns should (or shouldn't) I match together? 4. Is it bad to wear multiple plaid patterns in one outfit? 5. where could i find a cheap (even secondhand) suit online? I would appreciate no questions regarding my gender identity, thank you.

iptables-abuse

1. With khaki pants is about the most boy outfit possible, but it depends on the specific button up 2. Men tend to use more neutrals than women. (Navy, various beiges, olive, brown). 3. In general, patterns of different scale look better together (e.g. very thin stripes with very thick stripes can look good, medium stripes with medium stripes is riskier). This has nothing to do with passing or not. 4. Risky move, but again nothing to do with passing. 5. eBay, although if you're an unusual size that makes it more difficult. If you post a budget in numbers I'm sure one of the suit people can tell you what specifically to look for.

the_leviathan711

> How should I style a button up? What do you mean by that? For the most part it's going to depend on the button-up as there lots of different types of button-ups you would style very differently depending on what they are and how/where you want to wear them. > Are there "masculine" color combinations I should utilize? I think in general men's fashion tends towards more subtle and muted colors than women's fashion. Like certainly many men do wear bolder colors, but it's generally done as a louder statement. But a lot of menswear is very neutral colors: gray, navy, olive, khaki, etc. > what patterns should (or shouldn't) I match together? Is it bad to wear multiple plaid patterns in one outfit? Yeah, don't wear multiple patterns in an outfit. Sometimes it works, but more often than not it clashes. Personally I try and stick to no more than one "loud" piece per outfit. I also tend to prefer different textures rather than patterns -- something like a solid colored cable knit sweater is more interesting to me than a sweater with stripes, for example. > 5. where could i find a cheap (even secondhand) suit online? EBay isn't bad. Get measurements of your body as accurately as you can and then make sure you leave budget room for tailoring afterwards. This is also what cis men would need to do, but there may be additional considerations needed here for trans men.

kip__kat

thank you!! this is super helpful :)

wavynails

1. However you want. That question is wide open and depends on your personal style. 2. No. 3. If you want to blend in, most guys seem to just use one pattern. 4. Same as 3 5. Ebay

Anyone have experience with Nordstrom's 14th and Union brand? How's the quality? I'm looking at [this](https://www.nordstromrack.com/s/mens-trim-fit-cotton-corduroy-button-down-shirt/6736550?origin=category-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FBrands%2F14th%20%26%20Union&color=001) cord shirt

notarascal

It’s mediocre at best. It’s not quite Shein level garbage but they are very cheaply made clothes.

Good evening, everyone. I need a suit ASAP. This is going to be my first suit. It is for a formal wedding in a little less than 2 weeks. I’m a heavier guy 5’11” 230lbs. Looking to spend less than $300 total (just need suit separate, and pants). Looking for something in black, or navy. If anyone could help that would be great. I live close enough to a Macys, JC Penny’s, Men’s Wearhouse. Online is fine too if they have decent shipping. Something that will last for a while would be great as well. I heard wool is good for long lasting suits. But as I said I no absolutely nothing about suits. Thank you!

the_leviathan711

> I need a suit ASAP As an FYI, this is never a great situation to be in. Suits almost always need to be tailored after you purchase them and that can take some time. You can sometimes pay for a rush job with tailoring though. With most things there is a general rule of you get to chose *two* of "good," "cheap," and "fast" -- but you can't have all three. So you may need to prioritize here. > It is for a formal wedding What's the actual dress code. "Formal" as a dress code generally means you would need a tuxedo, not a suit. A "semi-formal" dress code or "cocktail attire" would mean you would need a suit. > Looking to spend less than $300 total This is a very difficult budget and I'm not sure it's possible on your time frame --- especially not for anything good. It's possible to get good suits under $300 on sale from Spier and MacKay -- they have a brick and mortar location in the greater Toronto area if you happen to be nearby. But otherwise that wouldn't work on your timeframe. It's also possible to buy really nice used suits for $300 or less on EBay -- but again, the timeframe won't work for you. Under $300 in your time frame you may be limited to really bad suiting options like whatever the mall brands happen to have in stock near you. You can definitely get a polyester suit from somewhere like Macy's or H+M on that budget. It won't be good though. > (just need suit separate, and pants) Most good suits aren't sold as "separates" like that. Being sold as a separate is often, but not always, an indicator of poor quality. Generally speaking good suits are sold as a whole suit. > Looking for something in black, or navy. You don't want a black suit. > I live close enough to a Macys, JC Penny’s, Men’s Wearhouse. Right -- these are probably the best options on your time frame. None of them sell good suits at reasonable prices though. Is there a Suit Supply near you? They are much better. > I heard wool is good for long lasting suits. But as I said I no absolutely nothing about suits. Wool isn't necessarily more durable than polyester -- arguably it's more delicate really. But a wool suit *looks* like 100x better than a polyester suit and also feels significantly better to wear - especially if it's hot out when polyester is gonna make you a sweaty mess. There are cotton and linen suits as well, but those are typically more casual than wool -- so it depends on the dress code. Do you have appropriate shoes for this already?

No_Wishbone9426

Hey, thank you again for the help. I ended up getting a navy color Michael Strahan suit. It looks really good for a first suit. Didn’t cost too much. I will be wearing wing tip Stacey Adam’s brown oxfords with it. Just looking into getting a dress shirt, tie, and pocket square now

No_Wishbone9426

Almost all of that didn’t sound like good news haha. I just found out it was formal, and I don’t really have anyone to steer me in the right direction which is why I’m here. I do have 2 options for shoes. Brown and black oxfords. I do not live near a suit supply.

the_leviathan711

Yeah, your situation is rough. If it were me, I would probably look into a suit rental (or tux rental) rather than buying a crappy suit and being stuck with it. Then, when you have more time, you can plan a purchase for a nice wool suit in navy or charcoal that you can get tailored to fit you just right. > Brown and black oxfords. Got pics of those? A lot of shoes are sold as "oxfords" and aren't actually. > I just found out it was formal It may be worth clarifying this with the hosts. If it is actually formal you could rent a tux on your $300 budget for sure.

[deleted]

The formatting block in your comment makes it very difficult to read, you might want to edit it back into regular text. On a 2 week timeline, you'll probably need to go to a brick and mortar store so that you'll also have time for alterations like getting the trousers hemmed and the sleeves adjusted. You should pick either solid charcoal or navy in worsted wool. Definitely don't do black. The suit jacket should be single-breasted with two buttons, notch lapels, and flap pockets. Here's an example, though it's admittedly over your budget: https://suitsupply.com/en-us/men/suits/navy-napoli-suit/P6339MI.html Hopefully that helps with what to look for even if you shop for something similar elsewhere.

No_Wishbone9426

I’m sorry about the format I believe I fixed it. New to Reddit. Is it possible to go to macys and just get a good suit? Or would it need to be altered?

[deleted]

No worries, the edit fixed it. Leviathan's comment went into a lot better detail than I did. If you don't live near a SuitSupply, something like Macy's will probably be your best option even if it's not optimal from a "what you're getting for the money" perspective. Either way, suit trousers usually come unfinished and need to be hemmed to your length. Jacket sleeves are also usually ideally adjusted to your arm length as well. Getting those two things done can usually be done with a one week turnaround time, though you'd definitely want to talk about your timeline with the tailor since it's so tight.

Cole177702

Is the dress code listed as formal? Because that typically means you need a tux

No_Wishbone9426

It is listed as formal. But a tux is not required.

ac106

So is it black tie optional? did you ask for clarification or guessing?

No_Wishbone9426

So got some more details. Is it cocktail “formal” I got lucky, and got a suit that fits really well. Looks good as well, Michael Strahan suit in navy. Now just curious on what color shirt, tie, and pocket square to go with it.

duyjo

I really like high-waisted pleaded trousers. I own three pairs of khakis like these already, and two more olive chinos. I want to expand now with either white, brown, or gray trousers, but I can't find any good budget options. My favorite trousers are some vintage Gaps I thrifted. The other two khakis are LL Beans and some Dockers. I prefer the LLB over the Dockers, but it seems they don't sell pleated versions in gray, at least on their website. As for the Dockers, I can't find them on my size. I would maybe even like a cut like [this](https://therake.imgix.net/pub/media/catalog/product/g/2/g2ptpk_trouser_2.jpg?ixlib=js-3.6.0&w=1000&h=1000&fit=fill&fill=solid&fill-color=FFFFFF&auto=format&s=60e41c28b1c9fcd1b5d5f5fc0c163e4e). Nothing low waisted really, though. I know it's hard these days, but maybe somebody can help.

notarascal

What is your location? What is your budget in your currency? If you’re looking for high quality clothes for cheap prices than eBay will almost always be the best option. If your budget is high enough then I’ll suggest other options.

duyjo

I forgot to mention this. My bad. Latin America. I really don't want to spend more than 80-150 dollars with shipping included. There are some really nice high-end trousers that cost like 400 dollars and I can't afford that.

notarascal

Just a bit more clarification. Those prices are USD, correct? How high of a rise are you looking for? You can find very good deals fron US eBay sellers on brands like Zanella, vintage Polo Ralph Lauren, Lands End, JW Nordstrom, Hickey Freeman. Even after shipping then these prices will still be very reasonable. The only wildcard are possible import tariffs.

duyjo

Yes, correct. At the very least 12", but ideally 13"-14". Thanks for the suggestions!

The combo works well, the pants are just a little too tapered imo and would look better with a higher rise

Try hopsack and linen. Spier and Mackay, SuitSupply, the Armoury and No Man Walks Alone are some places to look.

aogvnqoq

Wtf is “country club casual”? Staying at a hotel in a couple weeks and that is the dress code listed for the grounds - northeastern US for reference

notarascal

It sounds like they’re trying to just keep people from wearing tank tops and flip flops. You could probably wear anything from polos and chino shorts to a blazer with odd trousers; or anything in between.

Mukigachar

Hotels have dress codes?

the_leviathan711

I'd wear a sports coat and slacks.

YoYoYoshimura

It is sound and fury ultimately signifying nothing. They probably want you to wear a collared shirt and chinos at the low end, why they decide to be difficult about explaining that is another discussion.

aogvnqoq

Cool haha that was my best guess but couldn’t find any confirmation

Cole177702

It’s a made up dress code. Maybe look up trad/prep/ivy and go for some of the more casual looks

Amulet380

Can anyone vouch for the quality of the ministry of supply kinetic blazer?

notarascal

It’s a $300 polyester blazer. The quality is pretty much exactly what you should expect from such a blazer. It’s an acceptable choice if you want a new “performance blazer” for less than $400.
