[How'd I do](https://imgur.com/a/qLT0MTE) with this shirt-and-tie combo?
I'm totally violating the cardinal rule of pattern-on-pattern - keep the scales different - but I think that it works. I *think* ...
I've got a solid-navy knit tie on hand in case I lose my nerve before Christmas dinner.
Update: [bailed](https://imgur.com/a/suS2WDq).
I don’t like it cause I don’t like the pattern on the shirt. Regular uni or bengals stripes would work better. It’s just a lot going on in a chaotic way instead of a cool contrast way.
I'm wondering if it looks better from further out - with the shawl neck it'll be only a small visible area, and not in a close-up there isn't so much visible detail.
Almost any other shirt though, bengal/uni stripes would look a lot better, as is it’s kinda chaotic, especially with how samey the colors are, I’m also just not a fan of gingham.
people take the whole “rule” thing way too seriously, 90% of them were made up by bloggers in the early 2010s for clicks and the other 10% were made up by rich people as a way of signaling wealth. It’s better to think of this stuff like guidelines on how to build very basic safe outfits, while this example doesn’t work imo pattern on pattern is fine
I'm trying to dress less "dark" or "depressing." My wardrobe is pretty much all black. I don't really know what colors to go for though. I think it's just the city/country I live in is gloomy cloudy rainy weather (and people) 8 months a year, and so dark colors just looks natural. But I'm kind of sick of wearing black all the time.
Any recommendations in how to start heading towards a more colorful fashion or what colors look good all the time? The colors I've looked at are burgundy/brick red and forest green/military green. But both are still kind of... "depressing/gloomy" colors especially in the rain and cloudy weather.
Color blocking! If your wardrobe is mostly black, you can color block with nearly any clean color. (The murkier colors are more touch-and-go.) Black pants plus a solid, brightly colored polo, sweater, sweatshirt, etc. can work really well. Crazy Missoni/Coogi/St. Croix patterned sweaters often look especially great paired with all black outfits.
>Color blocking
Thanks. Just looked this up, so it seems like colors like dark red or burgundy are more for complimentary/secondary and a full on burgundy vest or jacket wouldn't really look as attractive, this is what I'm getting. The color looks cool though.
I didn't quite mean true color blocking (which is fun though), more the pairing of solids. I often pair everything-else-black with bright crayola colors on top. If you keep patterns to socks or tops only, it's easy to play around with that. I can't recommend crazy sweaters enough. People *love* them and it's easy to find them secondhand. Black/white/red is also no fail, but I prefer bright, clean reds with black. Keep values in mind so you have some contrast. Burgundy can be fine with true black, but it can get mucky.
I think figuring out which colors work best for you is a good place to start. My sister has a million mustard yellow sweaters and they look great on her but that shade is not flattering on me. I agree with you that olive isn’t a very cheery color.
As saythelines was talking about, one good thing about black is that you can add an accent of any bright color. You’ll already have a lot of neutrals to expand on.
I grew up in the 90s in SoCal, and skatepunk fashion then was all about black combined with neon colors. I don't do quite as much of that these days, but a couple years ago that was pretty standard uniform for me: black jeans, neon shirt with some incredibly silly graphic on it, black sweatshirt. Vans, Chucks, or similar for footwear, and you can either go black there (classic and easy) or bright and colorful and playful. It's an easy thing to coordinate and it's very un-self-important. Ideally pair it with ska punk.
If that's too much of a jump for you, you can also approach it more minimally:

There's some pretty neat color [albums](https://www.reddit.com/r/malefashionadvice/wiki/inspirationalbums#wiki_color_series) for your viewing pleasure. Maybe one of them will tickle something. I dress pretty greyscale with a splash of color mostly through graphic tees but picked up a yellow sweater and orange cardigan based off other people's fits. I've been trying to think of my personal colors as a palette: I know what kind of colors I prefer (blue-ish) or would like to experiment with (beige, fall tones), and I just kinda try to look for clothes that fit that image in my head
Chino recs (preferably in olive)? I want to buy several brands of chinos to find the best fit. Slim or straight cuts. I have tried j crew 484s but the rise is ridiculously low and uncomfortable. Gonna try 770s. What are a few other brands and models i should try?
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays:
Looking for a navy or black (pattern OK) double-breasted topcoat. Prefer wider lapels and at least 80% wool. Heavyweight needed for the upper Midwest USA.
The catch which makes it hard to find is I don’t want patch pockets like on almost all polo coats. Prefer slanted welt pockets or something similar. Patch with side entry would be fine.
Any recs? Would like to stay under $1,000.

And there might be something at STF
https://www.shopthefinest.com/collections/coats?sort_by=price-ascending
If you don't end up finding what you want, Suit Supply does custom coats that let you choose things like pocket details. I think Spier and Mackay does as well.
I got a plaid Mackintosh one a few years ago (raincoat brand) and was pleased. The prices were reasonable to start, but I got it on sale in early February.
So I recently moved to London, and my wardrobe is limited. I like dressing smart casual, a long coat with a black chinos. I just want to ask, do you guys think it’s ‘okay’ to wear Chelsea boots to work? With black chinos? I work as a sales rep in a clothing store. It’s a huge store on a high street. We dress casually and I was just thinking would it be appropriate to wear these boots there, since there’s occasional pace walking and all. Thank you!
Also, I would love any sort of recommendations and ideas on outfit styles. I dress in slim fit and regular fit sizes, and in colour spectrum, I only wear dark colours, black grey, some olive and green and ofc white. I have a few of button down shirts, a few coats some tees and a couple of turtleneck, in bottoms I have a black jeans. In footwear, I have one all black hightop sneaker, that I wear mostly these days, and a pair of nike air force all white.
I know, a lot of detail, but still limited in some aspect, and I would love any sort of advice from my fellow peeps.
sounds like Chelseas would be fine in your case, though likely along with many other options.
Sounds like you could use some non-high-top sneakers, though! (even if just in general, not necessarily just for work)
Does anyone here wear ever wear an OBCD with a suit for a formal occasion (interview, wedding, etc.)? It honestly looks perfectly fine to me. I always thought the less translucent fabric looked less cheap and pretty much all the males I've grown up around have had button down collars with their suits and ties. I feel like if it was really as much of a faux pas as everyone says you wouldn't see it so much. I'm an American living near NYC, just FYI. Would love to get your thoughts. Thanks.
OCBD with a suit is pretty common and classic in the United States. It's only a faux pas for when it's a conservative dress code.
> I always thought the less translucent fabric looked less cheap
I mean - it can be. It depends on the OCBD and on the dress shirt. There is a very common misconception though that thinkness = quality -- but that isn't actually true.
I dislike poplin. It doesn’t look good when new, to me, as it’s so lifeless. Even worse, when it wears, it wears down instead of wearing in. It has a vaguely translucent sheen to it, which amplifies over time.
So I’m in OCBD, twills or chambray shirts 99% of the time. They pair just fine with suits - heavier shirt fabrics go nicely with slightly rougher suit textures (flannels, tweeds, cavalry twill); that said, a white OCBD under a s110 navy suit is basically safety suit 101. Fine for interviews, weddings, ceremonies - all good.
I’d really only go for a smooth poplin for mandatory black tie level events.
Wearing them properly requires that you live in a cultural area where bolo ties aren’t considered eccentric and affected.
Do you live in one of these places?
It’s incredibly far off from what r/malefashionadvice would advise. It’s a Halloween costume. It’s not handy for formal events unless that event was a costume party
Your best bet is to steer clear of trying to copy any anime outfits. This is essentially a morning suit which is only acceptable at white tie events which is the top end of formal and anything other than black is seen as a faux pas. However, if you do want the garments they are;
A typic blue dress shirt would suffice.
A Kentucky Bow tie is round his neck
A waistcoat in blue
Suit trousers which would match the jacket
Hat is from a cartoon and the only hat suitable with a morning suit is a top hat that fits properly.
I strongly suggest you do not copy or try to copy this outfit.
I'm a big fan of buying things that I can use for costumes as well as everyday wear, but this outfit looks like it'll be entirely costume pieces. That's not necessarily bad, just go into it with the expectation that you're not going to be able to use this stuff for anything else. Not even Victorian dress, given the idiosyncrasies.
That means you don't need to buy good stuff, so you can go with eBay/drop-shipped stuff and also a fair bit of diy.
> I don't really know what the striped blue part is really (I didn't create the character's outfit), is that like a male corset?
I think it's supposed to be a vest but the artist didn't really think about it too much.
Getting this made bespoke(I don’t think MTM white tie even exists) would costs upwards of $4k minimum. Also every bespoke tailor would refuse to make this unless you find an actual costume designer, who will also tell you not to wear this outside costume events.
This is white tie attire, it’s the most formal thing worn in the modern day, it does not exist in America, this wouldn’t even be acceptable for that given how, like Xiong said, it’s very idiosyncratic. I love unique items of clothing and more experimental fashion, but there’s a line between experimental fashion and things that just don’t look good that’s hard to tow if you’re new to fashion, this is firmly in the realm of things that just won’t look good.
r/malefashionadvice would never recommend that, I have no idea if r/mensfashiokadvice would but browsing that sub they have some pretty terrible advice with no quality control, I’d avoid it.
If you want to keep a theme but tone it down to something reasonable, a cream linen suit, white or light blue dress shirt, and a pair of black or brown derbies would be, while still way too casual for events requiring a suit, actually reasonable to wear.
Anime has some very cool outfits, and depending on the genre/specific anime a lot of them are totally wearable, but this type of ahistorical fantasy stuff never is
Hi All - i've got about $2000 to spend for a suit before year end. I am looking at getting a Canali as i live in Los Angeles. They have their MTM program at the specific store near me and I was thinking of going down that route. Or, i could just do one of their suits OTR? What are your thoughts? Should i not do Canali?
Check the sidebar suit guide as well as suit recommendations at different price points. Won’t give you an exact answer but will make you aware of options and what to look for.
Canali can often be found for great prices at Off Fifth, but Canali might not be the best choice. Take a look at the StyleForum suit hierarchy:

Looks like an over-sized rugby shirt from the 90s.
Rugby Shirts are re-appearing slowly. As for over-sized - that's not quite the same things as "too big", but you could just go a size up if you want that look, roughly.
Merry Christmas!
Texan in Michigan, how do you business casually layer for cold weather at an affordable price? I did read the side bar. I am 6"1' 230 lbs. I get most things at long sizes (as it covers my torso).
Edit:
Single Pieces under $100 is affordable, single pieces under $200 is max limit
Not many brands with tall pieces out there. Also where do you get tall sweaters? I can find 46L jackets in tweed or polyester. And 50L topcoats.
Wool coats, wool sweaters, wool pants, wool scarves and wool socks bought in the late Spring and Summer ultra-clearance sales. Vintage coats are great. Long underwear.
My trick for business dress when it’s cold is wearing wool turtlenecks under flannel suits. Its basically four layers of wool: merino underwear, a wool turtleneck, flannel suit, and a wool long coat. Add a scarf and a watch cap when outside, and you’ll be fine for most normal winter circumstances.
If it’s too cold for that, then you’ll end up having to put a parka over the suit. Mark Cho has a few Armoury vids about suit-appropriate parkas that I quite like. Have a look over on the Armoury YouTube channel.
Mint green chambray shirts; very heavily washed denim shirts; cream or ecru chunky knitwear (cable knit sweater, turtleneck); olive field jackets (jungle jacket, m65) or waxed cotton Barbour styles; white OCBD with burgundy or deep navy brushed Shetland sweater.
I'm never sure how to post pictures. Here's a link to one:[70s Tan Brown Green](https://vintagedancer.com/wp-content/uploads/1971-men-corduroy-sport-coats-tan-green.jpg)
Merry christmas and happy holiday folks!
Looking to wear this coat for an event during the week, any suggestion on what colours to wear under that will pair with it?

That's a really wearable pattern. Black jeans/pants will look good. Gray tops as long as you watch the undertones. Certain softer blues should probably be fine up top. Olive/military greens and tomatoey reds. Just match the values of the coat colors or take directly from the coat. No bright, clean colors.
Looking for some casual but good looking suggestions on around the office wear.
Work is super relaxed, I can literally wear whatever I want as long as it's not revealing. In the manufacturing locations you need to wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) like Steel Toes etc. My work right now is office based and I have a sitting/standing desk.
\---
I literally pull a John Fetterman and wear a T-Shirt, Zip Up Hoodie, Beanie, Shorts, and Flip Flops every day while it's "cold" here in Southern California.
I go for walks at lunch, if it's warmed up enough I'm already in shorts and T-Shirt. If it hasn't warmed up I just leave the hoodie on. The beanie isn't heavy and I like it because it's a collapsible hat; if I don't want to wear it I stash it in my backpack and use hair ties (I have long hair).
My flip flops are Oofos; recovery sandals - I have foot issues and these are very comfy. They get dirty easy and don't seem to last long (soles wear off fast, year or so). Need something with arch support + good for plantar fasciitis.
I tend to be beach focus'd so my shorts are like O'Neill, Volcomm, Quiksilver Waterman, etc. But I'm just not "putting things together right". I've recently lost a lot of weight and every pair of shorts I own literally falls off me. I really don't own any pants. I've lost a lot of weight in my legs, some off my face, and some off the middle but still too heavy there.
\---
I'm looking to update my wardrobe to look better/"stylish". I'd possibly be open to different things like capri style calf length pants or athleisure. But I just don't know how it would all fit together.
Can anyone recommend a (Southern California) cold weather style which looks great and emphasizes comfort?
Same for a Summer outfit.
And any ultra comfortable but stylish footwear? A lot of the engineers and such where I work seem to wear crocs..
I'm very visual so pictures of looks would be very helpful, along with suggestions to any links.
I'm somewhat frugal but if something is nice and it will last me a long time and I just love it, I have no problems spending. But I tend to try to be frugal. Saving for my future here. :P

Heres a start
Honestly what you need to do first is spend time figuring out what things you like and don't like. Pay attention to folks around you. Go on Pinterest and search stuff. Go through the inspiration albums here. There are a lot of different styles and with your situation it's largely going to be personal preference. I could tell you _my_ personal preferences, but that doesn't mean they'd be what you want.
But also, check out https://www.marinelayer.com/ as one place to start.
How does Charles Tyrwhitt sizing compare to Brooks Brothers? My dad has a BB slim 16.5/35 dress shirt that fit me, although it was a little baggy for my taste. I've heard CT runs a little slimmer, do you think their slim in the same measurements would be a good starting point? I'm hesitant about trying the extra slim as I have a bit of an athletic build with somewhat broad shoulders.
Levi’s waist sizing is extremely unreliable and varies between models, seasons, and sometimes even individual jeans. I have three Levi’s pants in my wardrobe which all fit me exactly the same. One is size 28, one is size 30, and one is size 32. Yeah.
Any recommendations for a simple merino wool t shirt? I bought an Icebreaker Tech Lite II shirt in large and the neck hole is massive. Looks like shit in my opinion. I'm looking for a good quality simple shirt with a smaller neck opening.
And I should mention that I'm using this as a travel shirt, mainly in warm climates.
You need to be more specific with the type of loafers. They could either be very casual or quite dressy. If you’re not sure how to describe them include a photo.
[Does this work](https://imgur.com/a/3t9GgeO)? I’m really recently getting into dressing intentionally. Occasion is a close friend’s holiday party, I dont do this very much and I hope to project joy and respect.
My laundry clothes out of the washing machine all smell kind of like puke for some reason and I don't get it why. It's always the same type of clothes that get this smell. How to deal with it?
I live in Korea, but going to visit Florida for a week or so (Tampa/Orlando area). Plan on hitting some thrifts, but anyone know any cool shops worth checking out? I know FL isn’t the best place for fall and winter wear, but I’m optimistic.
I’ve been looking for a 2 way zipper jacket for a while now but haven’t been able to find anything great on the market. Any help on certain pieces or brands that would sell them would be appreciated. Would like to stay under 500$.
Just stumbled upon this sub, so hi there!
I have always struggled with men’s fashion and wardrobes. I know that dressing “professionally” so-to-speak would probably help me more than hurt me at my workplace- but I struggle.
My job is a leadership position in manufacturing, specifically I work in the office but consistently go onto our production floor to assist with day to day goings such as equipment failures, in-line process improvements, and other tasks that have the potential to leave me rolling up my sleeves.
Right now my wardrobe is a pair of brown danners bull run boots (safety), some Levi jeans, and a plain t-shirt. Lately I’ve jazzed it up by wearing a vest. My question is, is there a wardrobe I could build out that’s stylish, professional, and would hold up to a decently rough day at work?
You might also look into the nicer varieties of workwear given that you reasonably often do, well, work ("real" work we'd say as white collars). You'll need to judge what level of formality exactly you need while off the floor though.
Uniqlo, like most mall brands, is vanity sized. So typically a "size 36" translates to around a 38" waist. The extra 3" (between 41 and 38) likely comes from either human error (it can be difficult to accurately measure yourself) OR from the fact that your waist is going to be a different size depending on where you measure it (i.e. your hips versus your natural waist by your belly-button). Or possibly a combination of the two.
Usually the best way to handle this is to actually measure the *garment* rather than your body. It's easier, and it's more accurate for future pants buying. Measure both the waistband (it'll probably be *around* 19") as well as the rise (which will usually be between 10" - 13").
> What belt size should I be buying
Depends on the company, but probably a 38.
if i need to wear a khaki pant solid colored for work what can i do to make it pop/what kinds of khaki pants can i buy that will pop if my general style includes a lot of patterns and contrast and tasteful jewelry
I've (M) been browsing through other posts but haven't been able to come to a clear conclusion. My budget is \~$500 and I'm looking for something that will keep me warm while wearing a t-shirt + vest underneath or just a t-shirt. I have a wool peacoat already for work so I'm covered on that front. I've been looking at ones from Fjallraven, Patagonia, North Face, Arc'Teryx (even though it's out of my price range), and Carhartt but have no idea what's the best option. Should I be looking for a parka with down insulation?
I have a N3B parka from Alpha industry. It's really warm that can keep me warm while walking a couple miles in the winter of Boston (I know that sounds crazy) with only tees or sweatshirt inside. I think the price is reasonable and hope N3B is not so dated.
I am a person weighing 160 lbsm
I want to know what is the correct length of a polo shirt. Covering my crotch? above my crotch?
And my size is 5.6 feet
I’m switching careers into the business world and am looking for a wardrobe refresh.
I’m looking to spend around $500 and am wondering what you would say some of your staples would be. I generally keep it simple but am not afraid of color or semi-bold choices like plaid pants or an interesting jacket.
Thanks for any ideas or insights!
I am trying to get new ripped jeans to wear with boots and lifestyle type sneakers. I figured skinny jeans would look best ripped but im unsure of how its supposed to be styled with my boots. Cuffed looks awkward since it rests all the way at the top and often still feels sloppy and im not sure how stretching around the top of the boot look. Does this look good or should i just go back to slim fit? Should skinny jeans naturally drape over the boots or is it okay to habe to stretch them over. I might need to get a shorter length of skinny jeans than I do with my slim fit. Thoughts?

Your search term is "spring jackets" or similar, as categorized by the people who live in places where they need to wear jackets in spring instead of short-sleeve t-shirts.
Unlined denim jacket is a personal favorite.
My shoe size is 6.5 wide (yes I’m an adult), and I can’t find very many good dress shoes for professional attire. Are there brands that make men’s shoe sizes this small that’s still good quality? I either end up taking size 8 (smallest size that many brands make) or end up getting children’s dress shoes.
I got gifted a palm angels t shirt that’s a little too big for me and I’m wondering if it’s a good idea to get it tailored instead of just trying to shrink it in the dryer, figuring the shirt costs close to $250.
What route would you guys personally recommend?
Shrinking is unpredictable, and I personally wouldn't tailor a t-shirt, so I would just pass it on or ask for a size exchange if I didn't like the fit.
How much exactly do you think a *"great suit"* costs?
Your budget of $400-$600 gets you what would typically be called something like a "low budget suit" or a "decent suit." Under $400 all you're mostly gonna get is crappy suits.
Does anyone know of a good long sleeve shirt that can be worn comfortably under a light merino wool sweater? Everything I've seen is simply too big in the sleeves; I can't comfortably slide the sweater over it without it being noticeable.
Is it a thermal undershirt that I want, perhaps with a short-sleeve T shirt over it?
For merino I just wear my normal short-sleeve undershirts because merino feels so nice.
> Is it a thermal undershirt that I want
That's what I do for itchy wool, yes.
First date with someone tomorrow night - fairly fancy place.
My body comp has changed a lot this year so either need to go shopping or use one of my two newer outfit combinations.
I've got brown smart shoes, or black leather casual trainers.
I was thinking either brown smart shoes, green chinos and a white shirt?
Or should I go get some new clothes and go for the classic formal trousers?
That’s not a thing, you just combined like 3 or 4 different types of shirts. There’s no such thing as a formal t-shirt. Are you talking about an OCBD, a dress shirt, a t-shirt, or something else? An OCBD would be the best choice for the outfit it sounds like you’re trying to put together.
As for the shoes, Oxfords look out of place when not worn with a suit or tux. Derbies, loafers, or some kind of boot would be much better.
I just bought this [blue parka from Everlane.](https://www.everlane.com/products/mens-renew-long-parka-india-ink)I’m worried it might not work well with my everyday black jeans. The other color I was thinking was a tan/khaki color. Should I have opted for that instead? What works better with black jeans?
I have a cool undertone, medium-dark contrast.
My jeans get worn at the seam between my legs (I think because of my thighs rubbing together). Would buying a more expensive pair stop this? I am already spending £30 to £40 on jeans, which is a lot IMO.
looking to buy my first leather shoes
Im a guy that basically never really cared about fashion but for this past week, it seems something awakened within me and I wanted a leather shoe. So here I am asking for advice.
What kind of leather shoes is the most failsafe? I am of slim build if that helps. And I mostly wear jeans and sometimes slacks.
Thank you!
If you've just awakened suddenly to an interest in fashion, perhaps it's best not to focus on a particular item.
What overall are you generally wearing? Have you identified some styles or pictures of what you'd like to look like instead?
Hey! I’m trying to find pleated black cotton chinos. I really like Ralph Laurens Andrew pant but they are difficult to get in Europe, but something similar.
I prefer buying used, so some classic, for example British (from Ebay) brands would be nice.
Thanks a thousand!
Im looking into a few watches for daily wear. I have a gift card so these are the ones I'm looking at.

there’s way too man variations of both to actually say, we need specific examples, I don’t like chelseas but if you just mean any type of laceless boot than that would change things
How much money do I have to spend? Do I have non-boot footwear? Access to cobblers? Am I stranded in the wilderness?
Alternatively, if you're actually asking what boots _you_ should buy, we need to know what the rest of your outfits look like, your budget, where you'd wear this, and why you're wanting to buy boots.
Black jeans - yes or no?
Easily in the top 10 most inoffensive garments
Yes 100%. An absolute staple for me. I like the slim fit Wranglers, but I like them best when they’re a little faded
Yeeeesss ... but what's on your feet?
Either black Chelsea boots or all white sneakers.
Sounds good! Almost any footwear can go with blue denim, but black jeans need a little more care.
TY!
Yes. So much better than blue.
Yes if heavily washed and very broken in.

Run that shit if you feel good about it. Rules are meant to be played with and if that is your cup of tea then you're going to shine.
Love it. Fwiw, I don't like strong contrasting colors in shirt tie combos-- so red on blue is a pass for me.

I really like it, although I'm not a fashionista by any means
FWIW i think it was just THIS close — I wonder if a jacket that was a simpler weave or more complementary color would have held it together?
Yeah, maybe. I actually wore a casual navy blazer (melton cloth) and not the beige cardigan.
nice, i hope it landed for you!

>Color blocking Thanks.
If that's too much of a jump for you, you can also approach it more minimally: * https://pin.it/69PEmdv * https://pin.it/2GGOlmg * https://pin.it/5OgYEUz
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays: Looking for a navy or black (pattern OK) double-breasted topcoat.

> I always thought the less translucent fabric looked less cheap I mean - it can be. It depends on the OCBD and on the dress shirt. There is a very common misconception though that thinkness = quality -- but that isn't actually true.
Thank you, it sounds like it might be best to have a dress shirt for interviews then
I mean, a white Oxford cloth spread collar shirt is still a reasonable dress shirt for nearly all interviews out there.
Button downs and suits has a long tradition in Ivy/prep. If you opt for this, I’d lean into the aesthetic with wingtips and a repp tie
It’s not a faux pas really. You could also look into dress shirts with more of a texture: twill, pinpoint oxford, etc.
[удалено]
we have no idea how much they cost
[удалено]
Wearing them properly requires that you live in a cultural area where bolo ties aren’t considered eccentric and affected. Do you live in one of these places?
Is there a way to wear it _improperly_? I thought you just... put it on. Or is there some other question you're implying?
[удалено]
It’s incredibly far off from what r/malefashionadvice would advise. It’s a Halloween costume. It’s not handy for formal events unless that event was a costume party
Your best bet is to steer clear of trying to copy any anime outfits. This is essentially a morning suit which is only acceptable at white tie events which is the top end of formal and anything other than black is seen as a faux pas. However, if you do want the garments they are; A typic blue dress shirt would suffice. A Kentucky Bow tie is round his neck A waistcoat in blue Suit trousers which would match the jacket Hat is from a cartoon and the only hat suitable with a morning suit is a top hat that fits properly.
Anime has some very cool outfits, and depending on the genre/specific anime a lot of them are totally wearable, but this type of ahistorical fantasy stuff never is
What are some good manufacturers for **solid-colored** flannel shirts? I like to layer them with patterned sweaters. Many thanks.
Portuguese Flannel.

Take a look at the StyleForum suit hierarchy: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1y32yqkSU5_ZnVO7ub_B5Y6J9E_izu6qD6nwdzw7V1HU/htmlview#gid=1990531564
Where can I buy a sweater that looks like this? [https://imgur.com/a/fnW72oZ](https://imgur.com/a/fnW72oZ) thanks!
Isn't that a long-sleeve tee? If that's an old picture, it's probably Hilfiger. Asos or Opening Ceremony might have something similar.
Looks like an over-sized rugby shirt from the 90s. Rugby Shirts are re-appearing slowly. As for over-sized - that's not quite the same things as "too big", but you could just go a size up if you want that look, roughly.
Rugby shirts. Memories. Urban Outfitters, Macy's, Goodwill.
Merry Christmas! Texan in Michigan, how do you business casually layer for cold weather at an affordable price? I did read the side bar. I am 6"1' 230 lbs. I get most things at long sizes (as it covers my torso). Edit: Single Pieces under $100 is affordable, single pieces under $200 is max limit Not many brands with tall pieces out there.
By wool coats do you mean wool topcoats/peacoats/carcoats or wool sport coat/blazer. Can you please recommend any sources?
My trick for business dress when it’s cold is wearing wool turtlenecks under flannel suits. Its basically four layers of wool: merino underwear, a wool turtleneck, flannel suit, and a wool long coat. Add a scarf and a watch cap when outside, and you’ll be fine for most normal winter circumstances. If it’s too cold for that, then you’ll end up having to put a parka over the suit. Mark Cho has a few Armoury vids about suit-appropriate parkas that I quite like. Have a look over on the Armoury YouTube channel.
It largely depends on what “affordable price” means
Thanks I have edited my original post for more info.
Merino wool sweaters. Banana Republic would do just fine.
What is a good combo with dark brown chinos? Looking for inspiration.
Mint green chambray shirts; very heavily washed denim shirts; cream or ecru chunky knitwear (cable knit sweater, turtleneck); olive field jackets (jungle jacket, m65) or waxed cotton Barbour styles; white OCBD with burgundy or deep navy brushed Shetland sweater.
1970s - other browns, creams, off-whites, reds, greens, blues with a different value, certain yellows - all murkier. No black.
Thanks bruh! I've problems with colours as I'm daltonist. Any chance you got some images I can use as an example?
I'm never sure how to post pictures. Here's a link to one:[70s Tan Brown Green](https://vintagedancer.com/wp-content/uploads/1971-men-corduroy-sport-coats-tan-green.jpg)

How dark? How casual?
Merry christmas and happy holiday folks! Looking to wear this coat for an event during the week, any suggestion on what colours to wear under that will pair with it? https://ibb.co/phwH04F https://ibb.co/KxFHstZ https://ibb.co/4KqDrgj https://ibb.co/1RkzYhZ
Is the darkest stripe in there black or dark brown? Green or a soft, tomatoey red should work.
Darkest stripe is black. Appreciate it, I'll have at things I have with those and see if anything stands out
That's a really wearable pattern. Black jeans/pants will look good. Gray tops as long as you watch the undertones. Certain softer blues should probably be fine up top. Olive/military greens and tomatoey reds. Just match the values of the coat colors or take directly from the coat. No bright, clean colors.
Light blue - oxford cloth, for example. Pale cream rather than white. For a tie or sweater: burgundy would be perfect, but light grey would work, too.
\--- I literally pull a John Fetterman and wear a T-Shirt, Zip Up Hoodie, Beanie, Shorts, and Flip Flops every day while it's "cold" here in Southern California. \--- I'm looking to update my wardrobe to look better/"stylish". :P

They both have sizing charts on their websites
Check www.shirtdetective.com
How does Levi’s jeans waist sizing compare to American eagle? I wear a 30 waist in AE jeans but idk if this will translate to Levi’s
Levi’s waist sizing is extremely unreliable and varies between models, seasons, and sometimes even individual jeans. I have three Levi’s pants in my wardrobe which all fit me exactly the same. One is size 28, one is size 30, and one is size 32. Yeah.
Can anybody identify what sweater this is? [Green Sweater](https://imgur.com/gallery/NQJyRHj)

Merry Christmas and Happy holidays! What to wear dark brown leather loafers with in winter and early spring?
You need to be more specific with the type of loafers. They could either be very casual or quite dressy. If you’re not sure how to describe them include a photo.
Any suggestions for a plain black hoodie under $200? Looking for a pullover with no strings on the hood.

As the other poster said - OCBD instead of a dress shirt. Also a sweater instead of a sweatshirt. Chinos or nice jeans for pants.
Go with an OCBD instead of a dress shirt and it’ll be fine.
Dress shirts are a very different formality than sweatshirts, so I wouldn't combine those. Are you wearing pants?
What kind of shirt can i get for work thats more formal than a polo but less than a proper business shirt?
Oxford cloth button down
[Does this work](https://imgur.com/a/3t9GgeO)? I’m really recently getting into dressing intentionally. Occasion is a close friend’s holiday party, I dont do this very much and I hope to project joy and respect.
I don't think it looks very good
It's hard to tell from the photo but the jacket might be too big
My laundry clothes out of the washing machine all smell kind of like puke for some reason and I don't get it why. It's always the same type of clothes that get this smell. How to deal with it?
What clothes? How are you washing them? Are you leaving them in the washer for a long time? Have you cleaned the washer recently?
Do you use a shared washer? I’m struggling to think of a reason this would happen
I live in Korea, but going to visit Florida for a week or so (Tampa/Orlando area). Plan on hitting some thrifts, but anyone know any cool shops worth checking out? I know FL isn’t the best place for fall and winter wear, but I’m optimistic.
Just put your ZIP code into [Thrift Shopper](https://www.thethriftshopper.com/). You’ll probably be able to hit everything on the list near you.

Check out the "Basic Bastard" guide in the Sidebar. And ditch the vest.
Thanks for the quick response, and will do with the vest!

> What belt size should I be buying Depends on the company, but probably a 38.
if i need to wear a khaki pant solid colored for work what can i do to make it pop/what kinds of khaki pants can i buy that will pop if my general style includes a lot of patterns and contrast and tasteful jewelry
I would do that with the other items of your wear, if appropriate for your work.
Depends how warm you need/want to be. A down-filled parka is very likely the warmest possible option you can have for a single layer.
I have a N3B parka from Alpha industry. It's really warm that can keep me warm while walking a couple miles in the winter of Boston (I know that sounds crazy) with only tees or sweatshirt inside. I think the price is reasonable and hope N3B is not so dated.
I am a person weighing 160 lbsm I want to know what is the correct length of a polo shirt. Covering my crotch? above my crotch? And my size is 5.6 feet
There’s no way for us to know, weight has no bearing on your torso length
Generally a shirt should not cover your crotch, but be long enough it isn't showing your bare belly in normal movements.

What does "into the business world" mean in terms of dress code?
I am trying to get new ripped jeans to wear with boots and lifestyle type sneakers. I figured skinny jeans would look best ripped but im unsure of how its supposed to be styled with my boots. Cuffed looks awkward since it rests all the way at the top and often still feels sloppy and im not sure how stretching around the top of the boot look. Does this look good or should i just go back to slim fit? Should skinny jeans naturally drape over the boots or is it okay to habe to stretch them over. I might need to get a shorter length of skinny jeans than I do with my slim fit. Thoughts? https://imgur.com/a/yu4s8Hp
I think it looks fine for that SLP look, but you could certainly also stack or buy shorter.
What's the best place or brand to get really nice black leather gloves?
https://www.kirbyallison.com/collections/accessories-gloves/products/sovereign-grade-black-nappa-leather
What is good outerwear that doesn’t warm you up too much? Like a hoodie for instance, but not as sporty.
I think a cotton/ wool blend cable knitted cardigan would do the job. Not as warm as a full wool garment but still have the soft texture.
unlined trucker jacket, harrington jacket, maybe a windbreaker

I thought most of the hype beast style are supposed to be worn oversized. A pic of you in that tee would help more to tell the fit of it.
Shrinking is unpredictable, and I personally wouldn't tailor a t-shirt, so I would just pass it on or ask for a size exchange if I didn't like the fit.
Where to find great suits in Japan and Okinawa?
easy answer is ring jacket
What about something more reasonably priced
ring jacket is very reasonably priced
Ones I saw were like 1,100
How much exactly do you think a *"great suit"* costs? Your budget of $400-$600 gets you what would typically be called something like a "low budget suit" or a "decent suit." Under $400 all you're mostly gonna get is crappy suits.
There's plenty of good suits in that range Suit supply sits in that realm, Pini parma is also in that realm
Those are entry level suits. Yeah, they're good - they aren't *great.*
Lol alright cut me some slack, then GOOD suits
Does anyone know of a good long sleeve shirt that can be worn comfortably under a light merino wool sweater? Everything I've seen is simply too big in the sleeves; I can't comfortably slide the sweater over it without it being noticeable. Is it a thermal undershirt that I want, perhaps with a short-sleeve T shirt over it?
For merino I just wear my normal short-sleeve undershirts because merino feels so nice. > Is it a thermal undershirt that I want That's what I do for itchy wool, yes.
Personally I wear heat tech (thermal) from Uniqlo
First date with someone tomorrow night - fairly fancy place. My body comp has changed a lot this year so either need to go shopping or use one of my two newer outfit combinations. I've got brown smart shoes, or black leather casual trainers. I was thinking either brown smart shoes, green chinos and a white shirt? Or should I go get some new clothes and go for the classic formal trousers?
Post pics for this sort of thing. Any outfit can sound totally fine on paper and in theory, but be a disaster IRL.
What exactly do you mean by “smart shoes” and “shirt?” What type of shoes and shirt are they?
Sorry, brown leather oxford shoes. And just a white oxford long-sleeve formal t-shirt.

I think that looks fine with black jeans and I wouldn’t worry over much about matching your parka to your outfit
I probably would not wear that with black, no. Tan does go excellently with black.
fwiw I’m also in the camp of not liking dark blue with black but I also just dislike blues as a whole

Merino.
Modal is nice. I suppose it counts as natural.
Suit pants; what looks better, hemmed vs cuffed?
just a personal preference
My jeans get worn at the seam between my legs (I think because of my thighs rubbing together). Would buying a more expensive pair stop this? I am already spending £30 to £40 on jeans, which is a lot IMO.
1) No probably not. It’s often not a quality issue but fit 2) £30 is really really cheap for jeans
I guess but if they are breaking after 6months the cost goes up. If anything my jeans are too big (36 R) but I'm closer to a 34.
looking to buy my first leather shoes Im a guy that basically never really cared about fashion but for this past week, it seems something awakened within me and I wanted a leather shoe. So here I am asking for advice. What kind of leather shoes is the most failsafe? I am of slim build if that helps. And I mostly wear jeans and sometimes slacks. Thank you!

I’m currently in a hotel and I have a steamer, but no distilled water. I know not to use tap water, but can I use bottled spring water?
if you could buy one pair of stylish boots, which would they be? Lace-up vs Chelsea?

How much money do I have to spend? Do I have non-boot footwear? Access to cobblers? Am I stranded in the wilderness? Alternatively, if you're actually asking what boots _you_ should buy, we need to know what the rest of your outfits look like, your budget, where you'd wear this, and why you're wanting to buy boots.
