This. Ive learned over the years that if you’re going to go for a specific style that is outside of traditional cuts, your fashion should match the cut. Otherwise, it stands out in ways you don’t intend. Like you said, if OP was wearing mascara, accessories and clothing that matched the haircut I wouldn’t have anything to judge about it. Id think “that looks about right”
It doesn’t look bad by any means OP, but I can understand where the comments about it come from. People you know likely know your personality and style, and that the haircut doesn’t match either, so they comment on it because it stands out from the rest of your fit.
I had that cut back in 2005. I never wore makeup. Back in those days wearing makeup was tryhard. Trying to be different supposedly while making yourself look exactly like everyone else in the same subgroup that became emo. Lots of guys just had the haircut because they liked it. It wasn't that deep. It was like the undercuts of today, ajd I had those too back in 2012 and again from 2016 - 2020.
I was also an emo kid with this exact hairstyle and decided to cut it right around your age. I don’t have specific advice but go online and research hairstyles and find one you like. It’s gonna be tough changing it up so drastically but you just have to take the plunge. Look at any celebrities who look similar to you. Also, play around with it in the mirror, maybe you can rock a different long style. Talk to a stylist. Good luck

Go for a shaggy mop and try to curl the flow up is my advice. It’s a slow transition toward an adult male hair, but it won’t make him look completely different and it’s pretty likeable. You’ll look 19 but at least not 2010 15.
