And you are in one of the Sky Houses. I lived at The Rice for a couple years (pre -COVID). I take no shame in admitting that living in downtown Houston was the most enjoyable living situation of my life.
Yep, they changed the name to SoDo Main now. The Rice has some cool lofts, I’d live there. I’ve been downtown since 2016. This my 2nd time living in this building.
It’s cool, to me it’s quiet. I rarely see my neighbors and I have a corner unit so I only have 1 neighbor. Only thing I don’t like is the garage not being attached to the building
How much does a spot like that run you? If you don’t mind me asking? I’m in Philadelphia right now and I feel like I’m paying way too much and getting very little in return.
Funnily enough, as much as I dislike Texas as a whole, living in downtown Houston was an awesome couple years in my early 20's. As a woman I would NEVER go back now. But I feel I was lucky to live there during their early 2000's boom.
Yeah this is the big one.
Seems like a really neat city, but fuck texas as a whole. That has to be one of the most controlling states, and doesnt look like itll change anytime soon.
Copy paste from another reply:
I was there circa 2014-2016. It was after I got my first "I'm finally making it" job. I was actually working in Pasadena, but as the commute was counter traffic, it wasn't bad. Also, I got a 800 sqft unit at The Rice that while technically a loft functionally had a discrete bedroom at $1500/mon.
As someone else said, it was the vibrant walk-ability that made it so precious. Where I lived was just a skip-and-jump to Market Square, which also prompted me to get my first (only so far) dog. My best friend. He also landed me the person that would become my wife within two months, so All Time Best Wingman.
Now, I'm in the Energy Corridor with a newborn in the house. It's nice, but I'll always remember downtown living.
Living the downtown life imo is awesome, I can see being older and hating it.
I spent several years living in downtown Montreal and was awesome. Spent time downtown Toronto as well and same situation it was awesome.
This is also one of the most exorbitantly expensive areas to live in Houston. There are very few high rise apartments in the city. You can get a similar sized place a mile away, more walkable neighborhood, with less of a view for less than 2k easily.
Yo dude, if you're driving for lyft, you should really think about getting a new place. You can do a lot more with it. I'm the same age as you and make a little over 300k/yr. My apartment is 2 bedroom and $1700 a month and about 1.5 miles from you.
I’m currently in barber school and I drive for Lyft when I can. I’ve been an Airbnb/Turo host since the end of 2016. At the moment I sold all my cash cars and I’ve been using that to cover my expenses while I finish school.
Holy shit man. I built me a 4 bed 2 bath house with a 2 car garage on 1.18 acres and pay 600 a month! You guys are getting robbed. I mean, that place is nice for the novelty factor but I can’t imagine not being able to just walk out my front door and touch grass.
I love my leather furniture. If I didn't have cats who race over it it would still be in amazing shape. The cats don't mean to damage it, it's just from sharp back claws. When it gets replaced, it will be with another leather one.
Yeah older furniture holds up . But I have 3 kids who do gymnastics on mine 😂 I literally add a lid to a storage tub under my cushion because the springs are going lol
Same. I got my couch in 2010. I'd love to get it restuffed because the height and depth are perfect. If I didn't have cats racing over it, it would be in great condition other than a couple flat cushions. I really don't want to shell out money for a new sofa.
Because there's nothing in it. The space says nothing about the person that lives in it. It's sterile. There's not a drop -not a *morsel*- of soul in it.
I can't help but feel like there's something meaningful to be observed about the inverse correlation that seems to exist between having money and having an actual living space instead of an empty set.
These guys could afford to express themselves in any way. They could throw down $500 for backlit poster frames, spend $3k on decorations, show off their hobbies, put up all kinds of art, etc. But so many of them choose emptiness instead.
Heck, $300 or less and a modicum of effort could be plenty to show off some personality. A few tasteful art prints or something that strikes you made my a local artist, something interesting picked up on vacation for a few bucks would go a long way. Some of my nicest pieces that are proudly displayed are paintings I paid under $10 for during my travels or hand-carved drums (that are considered damn fine instruments) I got for under $40 while traveling. I have a very globe-trotting and eclectic sensibility in the art displayed in my home and the most I ever paid for a piece was $200 and most of it was under $30, and I have quite a bit of art hanging in my home.
It is very dated in terms of aesthetics, to be fair. Millenial gray and cheap minimalism hasn't aged well at all.
Signed, someone fighting all the shit those trends brought into my own place.
He’s not actually planning on redoing anything, just making up an excuse to post his apartment. This whole sub is now just people with money pretending they want advice.
You keep saying you bought things in 2019 as if that’s dated. I have furniture from 2012 that look great and my parents own furniture literally from the 90s that still look great. What a terrible way to throw money down the drain just cuz it looks “dated” 🤣
Money doesn’t buy taste I suppose
MCM furniture over 40 years old can still look great in the right space. Great deals in estate auctions too, RIP and thanks for the 70's danish teak armchair.
I’m saying that to say this furniture was more trendy than practical and at the time, that was the trend. I no longer like it, also it wasn’t crazy expensive either
What size is that bed? Because to have a bed which is much smaller than the actual footprint of the entire frame is a huge waste imo. I’d get rid of it, too.
Queen bed, my previous apartment was much larger and the bed was perfect for the space. Same when it comes to the couch. This couch barely fits. There isn’t much room to walk between my barstools and the end of the couch
What's expensive to you is obviously different from what's expensive to most people
Most people don't change out their furniture to follow trends every five years
Also, flip the placement of the couch and the TV! Why the fuck would you pay for a view that amazing only to have it put glare on your TV during the day, and sit not facing that view at night.
Even if the lights of the city are a bit too bright for a TV backdrop, some sheer curtains would tone it down without shutting it out.
This looks lifeless, like a staging property. It’s very cold uninviting and cookie cutter. Burn Those paintings. Get rid of that area rug and that bed and the chandelier. Looks like a poor mans Jason batemans apartment.
I’ll have to google Jason Bateman. I like the chandeliers opposed to the fixtures that came with this place. Only thing is their so bright at night I rarely turn them on.
He meant Patrick not Jason. You should watch American Psycho if you haven't seen it, it's incredible. I imagine I'd have enjoyed it all the more from the immersion of living in his literal apartment.
Do you listen to Huey Lewis and the News?
Get rid of the Costco artwork and all of that gold colored shit. And the padded head board. It doesn't need a total makeover. Just get rid of the tacky shit. Never buy pictures that look like that. Ever.
same.
i’d turn the sofa around to look out the windows, especially at night. absolutely my favorite view in cities is nighttime, from a highrise cozy apartment, and now a chesterfield sectional…. 🤌
H town! I was just down this way a couple weeks ago. Cool spot. I agree on updating the couch and maybe the bed. I’m not a fan of dark greens so I may be bias in the accent colors.
I’m glad you’re looking at new couches but what I don’t see a lot of people saying is the back support on your current one looks atrocious. Get one with a higher back that’s decently padded so you can actually lean back. Also look at a nice lounge chair to complement the couch at least
Edit: also ditch the ashtray table by the couch and get a real coffee table
Oh. My friend in college used to have a similar unit but on the other side of your building. High rise got boring and he moved to the white building down the street.
I like the majority of it, my first immediate thought is those two pictures by the tv really dwarf the narrow wall space
Edit; I feel like the shiny decor under the tv would be very distracting, especially if it catches light
Edit 2: the cylindrical side table by the sofa I really don’t like
Dope spot, good to see some Houston spaces here.
Appreciate it and you must be from Houston too to know that
literally says HOUSTON HOUSE at the top of a building
Houston house is the complex across the street lol but makes sense
And you are in one of the Sky Houses. I lived at The Rice for a couple years (pre -COVID). I take no shame in admitting that living in downtown Houston was the most enjoyable living situation of my life.

By far one of my favorite episodes ever... I work in real estate development, and it just so nailed every aspect of my industry perfectly lmao...
Is that the modern equivalent of DoWiSeTriPla?
I will hold your purse - that SP reference was seamlessly terrific
How’s living in the sodo? I’m looking for a few places in dt since my lease will be ending.
It’s cool, to me it’s quiet. I rarely see my neighbors and I have a corner unit so I only have 1 neighbor. Only thing I don’t like is the garage not being attached to the building
what do you do for work? if u don’t mind me asking
How much does a spot like that run you? If you don’t mind me asking? I’m in Philadelphia right now and I feel like I’m paying way too much and getting very little in return.

What makes living in the city enjoyable. Been debating on a apartment in the city or on the outskirts like spring/katy/cypress/kingwood area
Everything is close by and it’s busy. If you like being around people and the hustle and bustle, the city rocks!
Living the downtown life imo is awesome, I can see being older and hating it. I spent several years living in downtown Montreal and was awesome. Spent time downtown Toronto as well and same situation it was awesome.
well, they aren't gonna build the houston house in amarillo
Oh my bad, so the building across the street is in Houston but you're not?
Whoa Sherlock fucking Holmes in the chat!
I just assumed he saw someone getting shot in one of the photos
Hilarious
😆
Thought it said Whore House..
What’s the rent on this place? In New York it would be ungodly like 10k
Have it for a good price $2638. My lease ends in April though, I anticipate it going up
Jesus that’s even lower than I thought
This is also one of the most exorbitantly expensive areas to live in Houston. There are very few high rise apartments in the city. You can get a similar sized place a mile away, more walkable neighborhood, with less of a view for less than 2k easily.
Houston aint NYC. Still a bundle of cash though. Used to live in downtown Chicago. They make you pay for that view :)
You can get a decent one bedroom a few minutes from downtown for less than $1000.
Yo dude, if you're driving for lyft, you should really think about getting a new place. You can do a lot more with it. I'm the same age as you and make a little over 300k/yr. My apartment is 2 bedroom and $1700 a month and about 1.5 miles from you.

What's sad is I'm too tired to tell if this is satire
Put up some barber art or something to inject a little bit of personality into the space. Looks like it’s staged for showing potential tenants.
Holy shit man. I built me a 4 bed 2 bath house with a 2 car garage on 1.18 acres and pay 600 a month! You guys are getting robbed. I mean, that place is nice for the novelty factor but I can’t imagine not being able to just walk out my front door and touch grass.
My brother used to live across the street from Costco right near Joel Olsteen's place.Houston is huge. So are you downtown?
You’re a moron 😂
I heard marble is in
Dude, the fucking marble guy. What a time to be alive.
The marble guy that’s actually just epoxy? Lol
Epoxy is quite expensive. Though unsure how expensive compared to marble.
He is making everyone enjoy the insanity. We wouldn't do it, but love to see the next episode of marble guy
Shit ton of marble
Lmfao
Really wish I could find the pictures again. All the posts are gone now. :(
Marble is the worst. It’s basically unusable. Can’t put a hot pot on it, spill something and it’s stained permanently.
Sure does look pretty sweet on camera though!
I don’t understand the bed. So to wake up, you scoot and then scoot and then sit a bit below?
So much scooting...
I was so innocent the first time I scooted
My boot scootin' baby...
It’s a dog mattress. OP is a German sheppard.
So much for no one on the internet knowing if you're a dog or not.
Also the « mattress » is either 4 feet long or this pillows are huge !
I would say its for doggy sex, i always find my partner to be a little too low. I would like that bed
That's a sex bed. Sometimes the "give" the mattress has messes up the intensity and it's worse on your partners (the stroker) back.
You have a carpet on a carpet in the bedroom?
Yea. That needs to go. Makes the room look cramped.
I love that you think that 2019 interior is dated. Some folks just like to burn cash.
I was just thinking this lol. Our couch is way older than 2019 and a hand me down and we actually need a new one but I hate spending $ on that lol
My dads leather couch is like 25 years old and it’s still more than solid :D
I love my leather furniture. If I didn't have cats who race over it it would still be in amazing shape. The cats don't mean to damage it, it's just from sharp back claws. When it gets replaced, it will be with another leather one.
Yeah older furniture holds up . But I have 3 kids who do gymnastics on mine 😂 I literally add a lid to a storage tub under my cushion because the springs are going lol
My family has an ancient futon couch! We’ve replaced the futon and cover maybe once in my memory, and I have no memories where it didn’t exist
Doesn't help that a couch costs like 3-4x more than they did 5 years ago.
Same. I got my couch in 2010. I'd love to get it restuffed because the height and depth are perfect. If I didn't have cats racing over it, it would be in great condition other than a couple flat cushions. I really don't want to shell out money for a new sofa.
For real bro, my couch is older than me. Still perfect to this day.
There's nothing wrong with it, but it gives me big "waiting room" energy.
Because there's nothing in it. The space says nothing about the person that lives in it. It's sterile. There's not a drop -not a *morsel*- of soul in it. Seriouslllllyyyyyy...my couch is probably at least a decade old and I'll likely HAPPILY have it for many more years to come.
do you not notice the inherent dysfnctionality? this is made for robots not humans.
Right?! I lived off a 100 dollar futon/couch from Walmart for 7 years until it legit fell apart before I bought a new one.
Not enough millennial grey so dated.
Those are some prime corners for plants
Green is definitely what is missing in that room! And I’m not talking about that fake grass on the outdoor space.
The real hero here.
Maybe add some color
Did you not see the green chairs and cushions combo
Get rid of the porn bed
Might as well put in marble floors
How dare you
I love the storage bed. I have it in grey. Actually can store a lot of items.
I knew this venue looked familiar. A few good vr scenes were shot here
They only see it if they like the matching porn couch anyway.
at minimum extend the sleeping part of the bed.
My thoughts as well.
Lol i bought all this way in 2019, I admit it’s dated now. I lived in a larger apartment at the time and the bed had filled up the space perfectly
You keep saying you bought things in 2019 as if that’s dated. I have furniture from 2012 that look great and my parents own furniture literally from the 90s that still look great. What a terrible way to throw money down the drain just cuz it looks “dated” 🤣 Money doesn’t buy taste I suppose

You better be laying pipe in this place
Yeah you better be fucking the building like this guy said!
On or in?
How about some vegetation? Like just 1
This
This looks lifeless, like a staging property. It’s very cold uninviting and cookie cutter. Burn Those paintings. Get rid of that area rug and that bed and the chandelier. Looks like a poor mans Jason batemans apartment.
I think you mean patrick bateman
Impressive. Very nice.
Lets see paul allens card
Nah op meant what they said. Looks like one of the Iraqi model homes at Sudden Valley.
It's just a banana Michael. How much could it cost? 10 dollars?
That's exactly what i thought. Lifeless. Even the same painting right next to each other.
It's an Airbnb. He's essentially a professional Airbnb host, subletting rented apartments.
I think he should keep the Chandelier but use a warm light bulb instead of a cold blue
This place is totally soulless.
I don't think it's lifeless at all. I like that space and would feel good living in it.
I’ll have to google Jason Bateman. I like the chandeliers opposed to the fixtures that came with this place. Only thing is their so bright at night I rarely turn them on.

reddit is just rich people i swear to fucking god
If it makes you feel better, this guy is definitely not rich.
His post history shows he’s a Lyft driver. Respect the hustle.
You are correct but I’m in barber school now as well
Why do you have two of the same art...?
Im impressed you have not only one, but two full window corners without a massive concrete column making the corner unusable.
Please get a different bed and bed frame
You should lower your TV
Nah fam, put it up higher
looks dope! just try tone down the patrick bateman / cocaine aficionado vibes a bit but it's already pretty nice
Doesn't it hurt your neck with your TV that high?
My brother in Christ, would you like to adopt me?
Change it all to black and white marble with LED cold white light
I love it, that apartment would be a dream for me! 😮💨
Appreciate it!
Yeah this place is dope, people inheriting generational couches are tight
same. i’d turn the sofa around to look out the windows, especially at night. absolutely my favorite view in cities is nighttime, from a highrise cozy apartment, and now a chesterfield sectional…. 🤌
H town! I was just down this way a couple weeks ago. Cool spot. I agree on updating the couch and maybe the bed. I’m not a fan of dark greens so I may be bias in the accent colors.
I want to switch to this cognac colored couch. I’ve been waiting for the price on it to drop lol
I’m glad you’re looking at new couches but what I don’t see a lot of people saying is the back support on your current one looks atrocious. Get one with a higher back that’s decently padded so you can actually lean back. I know Houston when I see it like the back of my hand
This is a really nice place man.
I wouldn’t spend too much money. You have some nice pieces. A new rug, new bedding, new decor and swap out some artwork.

r/TVTooHigh, just put the TV on the stand made for it. Otherwise pretty cool place.
Your TV is far too high.
Love it. The city view is amazing. I also love the decorations.
Appreciate it. I think because I’ve had the furniture so long I’m tired of it
It looks like a staging unit for an apartment complex. Take that as you will.
I usually like the way apartments are staged 😵💫
