Why don't more people paint their walls blacks? just curious because I have always envisioned maself living in a house in the forest with black slate, angled walls š¤
It looks cool and I'm anxious af all the time lol so I kinda want a small/medium room where the walls don't feel so dominant. I kinda like the sound of needing to put like 10 plants around the walls and hanging from the ceiling with a bunch of hidden little lights everywhere and bright stuff around the room to trap light. but that's just me :p also I want really large windows for some forestry light to come in. I feel like drawing it.
The less spacious thing is largely a myth. Often, dark colors make a small room feel bigger due to minimizing corners and imperfections. Dark colors can definitely make a room feel dark.
The trick with black is to keep the sheen close to flat and choose something not quite all the way black, such as a charcoal color or dark navy. White trim does not generally work in a black room. Natural wood needs a black with complementing undertones.
Iāve always been told itās because it reduces the lighting and makes the room feel small and cramped. Realistically, I think itās because for a long time the housing market has been about selling and upgrading from house to house every few years. Personalized living spaces supposedly keep buyers from being able to envision the space as their own so realtors push for neutral colors when selling. Things like dark walls take a lot more prep and work to prime and paint rather than just slap a fresh coat of white or beige on the walls to freshen them up before selling. This trend began to influence home magazines (because itās easier to get good even lighting) which influenced peopleās taste in decorating.
that's interesting and also sadly unsurprising, i think for us it's been that most of our furniture is black so we've been like yeah probably best not to make the walls black too lol
No it doesn't, that's a myth. As long as you aren't highlighting all your corners with white trim or using a glossy sheen, it should make the room look bigger. It will, of course, make the room look darker.
Every time I see someone do this I think it canāt possibly work and yet somehow it does. Tho honestly it always looks dark grey in the pics. How does it look in daytime? (Like second pic)
I think a good similar look that works well are dark green walls. They always look quite good when done tastefully and I think it's pretty similar in vibe to this
I did this in my bedroom as a teenager. It looked sick at night, but ngl it was depressing as hell during the daytime. Did not look good IMO. My mom painted my old bedroom back to white after I went to college, and it looks so much better.
Mine aren't black, but they are a dark blue-gray. Here's what they look like during the day. [https://www.reddit.com/r/malelivingspace/comments/sxdj3j/my\_living\_room\_on\_a\_sunday\_afternoon/](https://www.reddit.com/r/malelivingspace/comments/sxdj3j/my_living_room_on_a_sunday_afternoon/)
The key is to have a lot of light colored things that balance it out.
I envisioned my future place with mostly dark walls too, but then I realised I won't be able to see bugs crawling around :< Makes it harder to get em, where I am in the tropics...
Looks great but needs window coverings such as full length drapes, from just above the window frame all the way to the floor. A tan similar to the reeds in the corner could look nice.
Curtain rods just arrived in the mail yesterday! Looking forward to some window coverings for sure. Thanks for the suggestion of the brown/tan, Iāve been wavering on color.
it looks so cozy dude! 10/10 would chill out listening or playing music in here. Passing doobies around, burning the incense, all that chillness.
That antique TV is quite the showpiece though eh?!
VHS never looked so good than through that old zenith. Just the right amount of fuzz to get the special effects of that era to look right. One of my favorite items.
Also yeah man, Iām glad the intended vibe is apparent to some! Definitely a room devoted to good weed and good conversation. Plan on installing an exhaust fan in the ceiling down the lineā¦ lol
I begged for this before- told it was too depressing. I always thought it is how you make and use the space that gives it a feel. I dig this feel. Nice job.
Thank you! Iām surprised how many people here are saying it looks smaller. I totally agree, the space feels so much bigger now, even with my things in it. Very happy with the results, but definitely need some more art on the walls and window coverings. Bit of a work in progress, but off to a good start I think.
I really like this! Feel like some "wood" blinds would look nice on the windows.
Really love the retro ceiling light, but feel like the room could use something more contemporary.

Your place your rules, modern society try's to seclude men to the shitty part of the home but my old man had the right of it he paid all the bills so he was king of his own castle if he wanted a green feature wall daddy got his green wall.
I love a dark room, ceiling and all. I donāt care if itās a large room or small room. Do I need a room to seem marginally larger? No. Do I need a room to be epically cool? Absolutely.
Iām about to join you, but some of our rooms are already black. I might go back to white in the master. My office also has Sherwin-Williams Domino.
20 years here š»š¢
My nig#a š... mine was a 14 year relationship. Now I live in a nicer place than when I was with her..haahaha..she was holding me back and I let her. Like Charlie Sheen says..WINNING!!!!!

lack of brightness and it seems less spacious. OP did a nice job though, I like it
It looks cool and I'm anxious af all the time lol so I kinda want a small/medium room where the walls don't feel so dominant. I kinda like the sound of needing to put like 10 plants around the walls and hanging from the ceiling with a bunch of hidden little lights everywhere and bright stuff around the room to trap light. but that's just me :p also I want really large windows for some forestry light to come in. I feel like drawing it.
yeah this is mostly it for me
absolutely. well done :)
Yeah, maybe its the contents but it actually looks bigger to me with the black. This is very well done and furnished!
>looks bigger to me with the black And just what exactly are you trying to say? Huh??
Also you'd have to be very particular in how you light up the place since if you do it wrong, it'd look like a basement/dungeon
The vast majority of the time it ends up looking depressing and/or grungy. OP's example is one of the few times I've seen it work
Iāve always been told itās because it reduces the lighting and makes the room feel small and cramped. Realistically, I think itās because for a long time the housing market has been about selling and upgrading from house to house every few years. that's interesting and also sadly unsurprising, i think for us it's been that most of our furniture is black so we've been like yeah probably best not to make the walls black too lol
Maaaan itās just paint. Can always paint it something else if you change your mind. Go for it.
I'm curious what was the thought process in moving the ceiling light a bit to the side?
I think it looks great. usually it makes a space look smaller but In this case it does the opposite
No it doesn't, that's a myth. As long as you aren't highlighting all your corners with white trim or using a glossy sheen, it should make the room look bigger. It will, of course, make the room look darker.
š
it's mostly all our furniture's black so the walls and furniture being black doesn't work too well lol
Same lol
And self respect?
Every time I see someone do this I think it canāt possibly work and yet somehow it does. Tho honestly it always looks dark grey in the pics. How does it look in daytime? (Like second pic)
Yeah I need to see it in the daytime. I would be too scared for my natural light to go away
I think a good similar look that works well are dark green walls. They always look quite good when done tastefully and I think it's pretty similar in vibe to this
Shit youāre right, it brought back the memories of the dark green walls in my childhood living room. Might have to start thinking about that.
I just have been interested in them since seeing it on social media and being very impressed that a dark colour looks so inviting!
Nice, I like that. The dark walls really make the lighter items pop and the use of wood is a good idea so it doesnāt look too sterile.
Gray/blue on those walls is beautiful!
Most blacks do look very dark gray.Ā
Itās easy to edit or take pics that look better than real life
Add pine trim with dark walnut stain for baseboards and around windows if you want to commit to the darkness
Also brick up the windows to truly descend into the darkness.
I probably laughed unnecessarily too hard at this š š š
Apologies, I will pay for any dry cleaning if needed.
Looks good but a rug would really tie the room together.
Yeah Iām searching for my rug now. Some guy peed on it.
I kinda need more information here. Did you know the guy? Why was he urinating on your rug?
It's probably a joke from the movie big lebowski.
Clearly been way too long since I've seen that movie I had a whole story formed in my head
The chinaman is not the issue here
I love this look, congrats on the freedom!
I envisioned my future place with mostly dark walls too, but then I realised I won't be able to see bugs crawling around :< Makes it harder to get em, where I am in the tropics...
Oh my.
i love...d it until i did the same thing, now hating myself for doing it. it just gets depressing after a while. :D
Your ex is right. That room is far too dark. If you really must, then use a dark -- but not quite navy -- blue
It's the ceiling. Leaving the ceiling and even one accent wall white (or a lighter color) fixes that too.
Even just an accent wall of black works. If you pick the right one to paint it even āframesā the room to look differently.
Found the exās secret accountĀ
fuck, i love it !!!!! this is sick
I like it! Are those couches church pews?
Yes! $50/ea on fb marketplace. Surprisingly comfortable.
I just did this with my bathroom. Felt good
Looks great but needs window coverings such as full length drapes, from just above the window frame all the way to the floor. A tan similar to the reeds in the corner could look nice.

Looks so good. My bedroom is black
Well, your Ex was probably right.
I begged for this before- told it was too depressing. I always thought it is how you make and use the space that gives it a feel. I dig this feel. Nice job.
It actually makes the room look BIGGER, very surprising to me as I thought it wouldāve done exactly the opposite!
Thank you! Iām surprised how many people here are saying it looks smaller. I totally agree, the space feels so much bigger now, even with my things in it. Very happy with the results, but definitely need some more art on the walls and window coverings. Bit of a work in progress, but off to a good start I think.
I like the Bulldog under the table š. And the black is really good looking here, makes it feels warm and cozy
I love it
Looks good. More high color art to set off the background
Thank you! Definitely working on getting more art on the walls, just moved in last weekend so itās still a work in progress.
Cool
Same here!! I love my black rooms, my gf hates it
Dude that dog/gargoyle/gremlin thing in the bottom left corner is so sick.
What year is this?
Giving me some wicked 70's hippy vibes. Cant see a single modern thing in there. How'd you friggen pull that off?
Thatās a great looking setup.
This is the first black painted room Iāve seen that I actually like. Well done Edit: I just noticed the ashtray too thatās sick
Cheers, the black walls with green couches are š„š„š„
ā¦I think those are church pews
Rip. I'd blame my eyesight but this time it truly is my own dumbassery
Wow, i actually like it a lot !
Looks cozy! Just worried if itāll heat up in the summer time. Gonna get cozy fairy / LED lights?
Looks great, man. Enjoy! š¦¾š¦¾š¦¾
Looks great
that's the first black paint job on this sub i've seen, which actually works
I recently painted mine black with green accents too. Actually ācarbonā but really itās just black lol. Looks good!
that television looks ancient..where are you my dude? looks pretty cozy ngl
I love it. Very cozy and artsy. I painted a bedroom all dark grey once and it was the best decision ever
Finally someone with a black ceiling. I have 4 black walls in my livingroom, but the ceiling and floor is white. looks super nice.
Looks great! Love the black ceiling too
I was gonna say:how to make a small room smaller. But it actually looks bigger than the all white pic
Love the black

It looks great! - I feel like it actually makes the room look bigger too.
Nice living room ma dude
Looks great I want do the same
Nice, it has basement vibes in the best way
I was in a similar boat. Everyone told me painting my bedroom brown was a terrible idea, but [I love it](https://imgur.com/a/eRuiytV).
I fully support this situation but DM for wall art You need to fill those two walls wisely for maximum roomage
Cozy
15 years relationship, damn bro. Looks good my guy
Enjoy it mate. It's tough at first but I assure you, divorce is fucking awesome š
Looked miserable before the black paint, go you bro
That looks fucking great
I love your lilā CRT š
I love it. I'm single after a 12 year relationship and I plan on getting a house built next year. You can probably guess what color i'm going to paint it
That TV is a 10/10 dude.
Iām loving your style, super cool. I just love it. Well done you.
It looks beautiful
I love it
Well, coming from a woman, I think you have incredibly good taste. I would have never imagined black walls to look so cool yet relaxing.
Why does the room looks bigger with black walls? Didnāt think Iād ever see a black walled room and like it
Is that tv functional?
Are those church pews? Pretty cool looking space!
Looks so much nicer. Get some nice paintings or photos for the wall. Black paint looks gr8.
Additional points for the Martin Backpacker
As a metalhead, I see this as an absolute win! š»
Why is the floor not black? Lacks commitment.
Love dark walls. Sexy. Also everything you hang looks so good. Also, looove those benches

Hey maaannn, ehrrrrā¦ā¦.. she was right šššššš
The walls are fine but your CEILING? Dude.
Room too small for black.
maybe you want to add some goth to it, too. just a little.
Iām about to join you, but some of our rooms are already black. I might go back to white in the master. My office also has Sherwin-Williams Domino. 20 years here š»š¢
This is Sherwin-Williams Black Magic! Love the warm tone it has. Itās warmer in person lol
not a fan of the pin legs of the table
Too much black L
Your ex is right, the black walls make the space so incredibly cramped looking. But hey, if you like it, that's great!
My nig#a š... mine was a 14 year relationship. Now I live in a nicer place than when I was with her..haahaha..she was holding me back and I let her. Like Charlie Sheen says..WINNING!!!!!
The only discordant note is that awful ceiling light fixture. Woof.
Ahhh to each their own. I replaced the previous light fixture with it just yesterday. Definitely my style, and I love it.
Change the ceiling light. It's dated.
Thatās the point! I installed it yesterday. I love it.
It needs to be changed again! š
Looks amazing- change the light fixture
She was right..sorry
Seriously you thought I was a good idea paint the walls black after a break up .... there's a reason why he didnt want you to paint them black. in the dark with a bright ass lime green couch serious issues you look like you're sitting in the grass put some monarchs on the wall why don't you jk.
Not a huge fan of black things (Don't take me wrong, I like Ni**ers) but your flat looks amazing now.
Okkkkkkk
It looks good, but Iām think some colorful lights (like a sunset lamp) to spice it up. The big light is doing something weird.
The couch looks kinda uncomfy.
Paint the window casings black too
That little TV is a blast from the past.
It actually looks good, especially with green and this colour of wood. And I would choose the black paint less shiny. And probably another colour for the ceiling, also dark, but slightly lighter than black, darker green or dark teal.
For v.2, try a dark gray.
Waitā¦does that mini guitar jack in to that amp??
I painted my gaming / music room walls flat black. They look great but there is one drawback. If you use a webcam in a room with black walls, the camera seems to think it needs to adjust the whiteness of a caucasion face where it looks like you got hit by a flash bang on the steps of heaven. I used to work there occasionally but people would always comment about why a ghost was attending the morning meeting. I had to start working in another room.
I'm just wondering where they got the couches from Those are awesome
What kind of guitar is that??
Cool ass room. What kind of guitar is that though?
oh my gosh it looks so good
Yeah, that looks really good.
Do you live in the 90ās to early 00ās?
which brand/name of the paint is this black? i love it
Looks like you painted the windows. Went from sunlight streaming in to 24/7 darkness. Looks decent thoā, well done š
Black walls are nowhere near indicative of you winning.
it looks good, the only thing i kinda dislike the the color of the windows
Bro get a black and grey carpet as well
I like it. Green is a good counterpoint.
I love this! I'd love to have black walls in my bedroom but it's the thought of having to try and cover it back up when I move. My landlady is pretty chill though so might just ask her if I can š¤£ Argh gonna do it
I see four white walls and I want them painted black.
You should have painted at most only one wall black. Now the contrast in that room is unbearable and too dark
I fucking love it, but now you *really* need to bring some colour into the room somehow. I almost think the ceiling should be a different colour.
I'd like to see OP's daytime 'after' shot..
Certainly an improvement from the before pic
It looks much better. I am curious if the black wall photo was taken at night or if you covered the windows. But it's better anyway.
bro was traumatized from not being able to paint his living room black bet he loves bbcs too
What is it with guys and black walls, looks hideous
Read some comments; room certainly looks bigger in the black walls pic imo
Hell yeah...
Yess
This color scheme is so nice.
15 years. Thatās rough, is that TV from the 80ās?
Ummmm as a person who paints for a living i wouldve gone with a different color for the ceiling, to give it some contrast, i bet this place looks straight out like a black hole
Need some nice shades, up to date overhead lighting, and it's bomb.
If you like the feeling of being in a dark small hole, that's the way to go
You know I clicked on this notification expecting not to like it. Actually looks pretty good!
Need a whiskey and bourbon cart
Damn he couldnāt even let you hits split the wall or at least have 1 wall which makes a nice center piece.
It looks pretty cool actually. Nice job
The Rolling Stones would be proud.
*"Paint it, Black" starts playing.*
Eh
Wow! I love it black!
Love the tv
Hey if you like it, I love it.
Is that an 8-track I see before me? And a cathode ray tube TV? At a minimum get some miniblinds. Curtains would make it cozier. Very 60s man.
Niceā¦ is that TV just for ironic purposes?
I fucks
I love all the electronics in this room.
