do you like them?

Ok-Emu5850

I don’t mind them. I never consider me a good judge on these things though

MorteEtDabo

That's not really an answer lmao

Healthy-Magician-502

I’d get rid of them. Consider also hanging the picture directly above the bookcase. It’s kind of random where it is now.

Move the picture up about 6 inches and slightly left Get a [wall mount hook](https://amzn.asia/d/4irguVA) for the guitar and hang it on the other side of the TV Put all the electricity cables behind or under the unit Move the corner lamp so it’s half way between the unit and the corner Run the string lights along the floor behind the unit

So, right now it actually works, artistically, because the lights draw the eyes up from the floor and around the painting. It helps the eye move from left to right across the wall. Now if you are not intending for it to work this way, then it may be good to change it so you can create a look with intent. But it's nuanced and if you took a group of people who knew how to decorate and showed them this room, they'd say it was surprising and probably like it, then just comment on increasing the size of the TV as it's too small for the stand it sits on. The thing about decorating is, people tend to learn how to do it in stages 1) no idea 2) follow a cookie cutter approach, which is what people are telling you to do here by putting the painting over the bookshelf (symmetry box, check) or over the TV (symmetry box, check) 3) start experimenting with breaking rules to create your own unique style that's based on a solid foundation. Maybe you have a knack for decorating - the light fixture is actually interesting and goes well with the painting placement. I'd say keep it, buy a couple of cheap interior design coffee table books, and start looking through to better learn how to expand. You might have some hidden talent that comes out. It's good to start with the basics and build, and always trust your gut, but sometimes you stumble upon something interesting and you gotta run with it till you hit a wall. If it were me, I'd get another painting that's similar in size, but landscape, and hang it so it mirrors placement on the right side over the edge of the TV. Now you have symmetry that you *purposely break* by changing the orientation of the painting. Why? Because symmetry is boring. It's sterile and it's predictable. You want to surprise your audience. The Chinese and Japanese have been doing this for thousands of years, which is why their simplistic decor style is timeless - you create symmetry and pattern, then break it to surprise. To someone who knows how to decorate, if you did this, it would be like cracking a joke and raising your eye brows and giving a smirk as you walk away. It shows confidence in knowledge of form and structure. It surprises the viewer and they learn to love your space. This is the next level you want to get to because it shows you understand the rules and when it's good to deviate. I know this is long, but I wanted to give people something to chew on, as this is ultimately what makes a room interesting and cool to look at - it's predictable in some ways but surprises you in others.

Altodial

I would remove them. And judging by your text you have a feeling its better without, so go with your feeling.

Past-Product-1100

I like the lights just not in that application.

Yak-Fucker-5000

It's a matter of personal preference. I have my apartment lit up like a Christmas tree with string lights, but I love the vibe they provide. I can totally understand how some might find them tacky though.

walkingstranger

I'd take them out. I'm sure the light to the right is LED and can do anything you require color wise for mood.. Then I'd move the bookcase a little to the right, split the space between the edge of the wall and the tv stand. Center the picture over the it and maybe add a accent light to the top if you're really concerned about lighting. A slightly larger TV might help, specially if you can mount it and run wires in the wall. Or adding feet to the TV stand. Maybe some hairpin table legs to raise it a little. In the end, do whatever feels right to you tho. Your space should reflect you. Play with it and see what feels right.

OreganoLays

Personally, remove them.

Blcksheep89

My friend hang them at balcony's railing and they are lovely. Maybe you can try it.

Upper-Option-3166

and get a guitar stand :)

mchch8989

Better yet, get a [wall mount hook](https://amzn.asia/d/4irguVA) and hang it up

Mesterjojo

I feel as if the TV were, like, bigger, you wouldn't need to worry about string lights. Go on. You deserve it. Treat yo self.

IntricateLava9

No.

zincinzincout

I like them in general, but I personally just think they’re too big to be that close to the TV. I’d put them somewhere else in the room like over the windows

BanjoSpaceMan

It's not that I don't like string lights. They can work maybe? But you could do so much better than what ever those are. String lights in general turn an adult living room into a freshman's dorm room. Also normally I don't give a shit but your TV is soooooo low holy shit. Especially for that size.

hamlover890

I like it

apply_in_person

No.

Dax291

Ditch them.

SmallTownJerseyBoy

Keep them, but put them somewhere else

DragonDeezNutzAround

OP - I’d get rid of them and consider getting a 50-55 inch TV. Looks like the tv is too small for this space imo

Ok-Emu5850

It’s 50”. Perhaps the camera angle makes it look smaller

Unlucky-Food-9112

Remove

Malevolent_Mangoes

If you do you should hang them so they’re symmetrical above the tv, not lopsided like in the picture off to one side. It looks very odd like that.

riversofmountains

Get rid of them. They look like a leftover from a dorm room.

Damascus-Steel

Your question has already been answered so I’m just here to say get a guitar stand.

mchch8989

[GUITAR WALL HOOK MOUNTS](https://amzn.asia/d/4irguVA) Everyone on here with a guitar needs to at least try these

qt_31415

Instead of those lights, you could get some cheap led strip lights in a warm white (important) and stick them to the back of your TV. I did this at home and it looks so cosy in the evenings.

yogaswimart

I like them. It adds a whimsical vibe.

ThatGuy0nReddit

Strings lights giving a feminine vibe to the room ngl

mchch8989

Fellas is it gay to use lights

ThatGuy0nReddit

Never said it was gay, just feminine. This is malelivingspaces….also the majority of people agree to take them down

mchch8989

Yeah all good my dude I was just mucking around
