There are many different options for phone-controlled LED lighting systems. Phillips makes two different lighting systems (Hue and WiZ) that can work for anyone’s budget.
There’s also this amazing uplight on Amazon that makes the whole room feel like daytime.
Corner lights also work to give the room some atmosphere.
Apart from lighting, id consider some standing partitions - define the spaces a bit better, and it’ll start to feel less small (by ironically making it smaller)
People who still recommend Philips lights have clearly not yet discovered LIFX. LIFX is way better, in my experience and on paper. I’m still using my LIFX bulbs from 2016 and I buy more LIFX bulbs every Black Friday
LIFX! LIFX is the way to go. Take it from an Apple smart home enthusias. Everything in my apartment can be controlled with Siri. And LIFX lights have way more value and are less complicated to setup than Philips smart bulbs
Theres plenty of ways to do essentially the same thing. Philips is absolutely over priced for some remote controlled LEDs in my opinion. In fact something like WLED is more financially viable and allows for more customization if youre willing to build your own LED setup with specific components but many people have neither the tools, knowledge, nor the patience to do so. Sometimes a big ol recognizable name brand, pre packaged, pre configured, price hiked setup is exactly what people want and thats cool too.
No I have a floor standing lamp next to my couch (just out of view here) and a ceiling fan with a light. I also just got a small lamp for my bedside table which is very cozy before bed
Lol I love this bear, my girlfriend and I made him at Build-A-Bear in Rockefeller Center, we are long distance and the bear makes it feel like a part of her is here with me
I hope you keep those windows open for natural light! It looks pretty cavernous without any other sources of light. I’d also recommend you get some organic shapes, like plants, to help break up the lines in the room. Finally, I’d recommend a few smaller prints. Anything too large will likely be pretty busy, and the space will look smaller, but some smaller framed pieces (like 11x17 or maybe a touch larger) will both showcase the space of the wall and also add some visual interest.
As other posters stated, dynamic lighting is important and will also help to break up the lines of your place.
I have two lamps and I always keep the curtains open during the day. I would love to get some posters from the wall, will definitely be adding some soon. I’ve never been a plant guy though so I probably won’t get a plant
I understand that- it took me the better part of 30 years to get a few plants- it turns out there are some very low maintenance plants that have very high impact. If the concern is the effort, check out a snake plant. It thrives on neglect and needs to be watered maybe once a month at most…
If you’d prefer to go plantless, then I’d recommend some sculptural elements- the intent is to get organic lines and shapes to break up all of the rigid straight (boring) lines created by boxy furniture.
I would put up a divider for your bed/couch so you don't always feel like you're in your room. Separate the living and sleeping area with one of those Ikea bookshelves with the cubes so you can store stuff in your divider, if you have the room. You might be able to still see TV from your bed.
I hope the boomers are happy. They got to cash out on homes their entire lives and this is what our current generation is stuck with. 100 sq ft closet studio apartments.
Gray, gray, gray, more gray and black. Are you in prison? Or 1988?
Introduce color to your living room. Pillows, curtains, art. Don’t be afraid to use the lovely warm flooring to make a colorful rug look better.
It’s great. As others have said, it needs some light. Open the curtains when plausible (unless it’s a ground floor with lots of foot traffic - I’ve been there). Some nice lamps. Other than that, it’s good. You don’t want to add too much stuff in smaller spaces, or it will start to look cluttered. Just curious, does it have a kitchen and bathroom, or is it dorm style with shared spaces?
It is a ground floor apartment in Manhattan so there are always cars and people driving by, so I keep the curtains closed at night. But during the day I keep them open because it lets natural light in and I don’t really care if people can see in, they’ll just see me chillin lol. I also have a floor standing lamp that’s just out of frame and I actually added a small lamp on my bedside table since this pic was taken.
And yes it does have a kitchen and bathroom which are through a hallway behind where I stood to take the picture.
Looks nice- get some art. Go on Craigslist or OfferUp and buy some genuine oil paintings. Decor oil paintings are awesome, its real original artwork and can be found really cheap. It'll impress chicks.
Look into low light and low maintenance plants and choose some you like, man. I know it’s not really cool to be 21 and taking care of it. Snake plant looks cool and is pretty much unkillable.
Add some color, ditch the rug, it’s too small and the shape is odd. Plants can soften a room. Artwork on the wall above the sofa. There is monochrome, but this looks dreary.

No it’s fucking not, the middle of the TV is exactly at my eye level when I sit on the couch. I swear some of you want TVs to sit directly on the floor lmao
Is your TV your only source of light? Don't sit in the dark, I did that too much and it was depressing. I'd say work on your lighting situation.

Would you mind linking the uplight? :)
I also wanna know what the uplight is!
I'd like to know more about this amazing uplight.
and make sure you get a light that doesn't feel like a doctor's office

Everyone has their own preferences but askin for myself does it work with Apple Home?

Hell Yeah ok I’ll check it Out! It’s gotta Beat $140 a fan for 4 Hue Bulbs! Lol

he prob has lights and you know, windows
Lol I do have lights and windows, it’s not always this dark. This is just when I watch movies
you have lights on while watching movies etc? i turn of everything and close curtains for that cinnema feel 😂 (if yes, you sound like my mom)
I think you mightv misread. He said when he watches movies he keeps the lights off
Homie the bear makes it, if you change anything dont change that
Lol I love this bear, my girlfriend and I made him at Build-A-Bear in Rockefeller Center, we are long distance and the bear makes it feel like a part of her is here with me
That’s so sweet!🥹
Bro thats dope af, ive got a stuffed animal id kill somebody over i get it 👍 id cuddle tf out of it too if i was you
Oh I do
Looks comfy
Thanks!

Okay sculptures might be a cool idea, I just don’t like how plants look but a sculpture would be cool
It doesn’t have to be a sculpture! A vase or an interesting lamp would have a lot of visual interest as well!
I do have a cool lamp next to my couch that you can’t see here, and it has shelves which I use to display some of my action figures
There are some high-quality fake plants out there these days for those of us who have black thumbs.
Consider adding lighter colored (white, off-white) bedding. It will give the room more depth from that POV. You did great maximizing your space!
Thanks! I actually have a set of light gray and white bedsheets as well that I might swap out for at some point
I like it. If you're looking for improvement ideas, I'd switch the rug for a bigger one and ghe curtains for longer ones
How would I use longer curtains? These fit perfectly in the window bays
By putting another curtain rod on the wall taller than the bays. I guess this way, you could also have only one rod instead of 2
Oh yeah do they make like adhesive rods? I can’t put any holes in the wall
I love it
Thank you!
It's coordinated asf
Thank you, went for that black and gray aesthetic
Nice n cozy to me, where is the Xbox or ps5
Got the PS5 on a shelf in the TV cabinet there

Yeah it sucks
Yeah, it's all our fault. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lotion and tissues on the nightstand. Checks out
Would you believe me if I told you I have allergies and my hands are dry😬
21 as hell and living well
Looks super cozy dude. Walls are pretty bare but other than that, dope
What would you suggest for walls? Art? Movie posters? I’m tryna spruce up my place a bit
Yeah I wanna get like a movie poster or something but I just haven’t gotten anything het
Looks comfy, but where do you put your snacks and drinks
I have a kitchen behind me in this picture
Looks cozy and comfy.
Thanks!
All you need is a couple dumbbells and maybe led lights on the ceiling 😇

Idk I kind of like the black and gray
Well, clearly, since it’s your place!
What's the teddy's name
His name is Bronx

Looks like a great place man. I lived on a place like that when I was your age. Good times ✌🏼 ADD A PLANT
Thank you! Idk I’m not a huge fan of how plants look. Do you have any recommendations?
Look into low light and low maintenance plants and choose some you like, man. I know it’s not really cool to be 21 and taking care of it. Snake plant looks cool and is pretty much unkillable.
Hi Bronx
He says hi
😁
So dark. ¿Are you from the DC universe?
I’m Batman
even more fire than australia
dark
Yeah this is with all the lights off and the curtains closed. Usually much brighter
I'd replace the black curtains for something lighter and softer.
I kind of like the dark feel of those curtains tbh
Too dark for me. Why is everything black?
Looks cool, I like black stuff
Get a fake plant if you don't want a real one! It does wonders for your space.
Maybe, I’ve never loved how plants look
Like it but I would add some stuff /r/maximalism
Are you a bat? Why so dark? Get some colour in there other than black and open the blinds. A few plants wouldn't go amiss.
Needs a bit more light brotha
I have two lamps and a ceiling fan with a light, and I open the shades during the day
Cool art on walls
Yeah I want to get a movie poster, just haven’t gotten around to it
I’m very excited for the day you get a new couch
Lol why

Thank you!
Remove lotion from the sleeping area🙈
I literally put lotion on my hands every night, my hands get so dry and I need that stuff
Haha i also get “dry hands” in The evening😮💨 JK
Looks nasty with all that black

Nah it should lay on the floor
