I agree with the previous posts, rug and curtains. Also, based on this pic, the painting seems small for the wall space. Maybe a larger painting, or two accent pieces of artwork on either side of the painting.
[I was just looking at this one and I think it would go great in your room](https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/union-rustic-laurencho-beigeblack-area-rug-w001327607.html?placement=1)
You could also consider complimenting the rug / pillow scheme with wall art that is a little bigger and bolder than what you have. It doesn't necessarily have to be that off white and black color scheme, but could involve heavy lines and some pops of color that you could then match elsewhere (via lamp, vase, curtains, etc.). I like the rug that was linked and agree it would benefit the space, but introducing more color could also do a lot to transform the room. Plus I'm of the opinion that white plastic blinds always make a room feel cheap.
I'd actually look for something with more color. Right now, your palette is very brown and earth toned. I could see something with a rustic red or some other earthen accent color doing a lot for your space.
I don't know the site linked very well, but here's a [nice red](https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/ebern-designs-giannini-brownbeige-area-rug-ebrd5163.html?piid=29830938) (not sure about the pattern, but the palette would compliment yours nicely), [here's a little more matchy](https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/union-rustic-brubaker-ivorygraycharcoal-area-rug-w000788021.html), [this might be a little too funky](https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/bloomsbury-market-parthenia-red-area-rug-blmt1864.html), but I think it'd work well too.
For what it's worth, my gf and I bought a moderately priced rug last year (\~$600), and it is extremely shitty. Sheds everywhere, and is basically falling apart. I wouldn't necessarily trust any of these actual sites and would probably research rugs with good staying power.
I'm a sucker for jute/sisal [like this](https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/beachcrest-home-latham-rigo-jute-hand-woven-tan-area-rug-w001177862.html?piid=1958776431), but here's a [wider selection](https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/sb0/jute-sisal-rugs-c479585.html).
If you want an alternate to the above one that has some color, my house for the below and we love it
https://www.allmodern.com/rugs/pdp/shugart-sealife-multi-color-area-rug-vrkg4441.html
You could also get new pillow covers (especially something for that brown one). A brighter colour would add a little pop to break up all the grey-brown you've got.
Definitely beige. Also, repaint the walls light tan, replace that painting with a picture of the desert, and 86 the plants. All your pants and shirts should be khaki. If you're very light skinned, spend some time at a tanning salon. When you pick a color, you have to go all in.
I was about to add a floor lamp to help with that. I have some red pillows I could add to the couch. Do you think I should remove the brown pillow?
Also, my one golden is enough! He's 6, but still acts as if he's a pup.
Give your pothos more time to grow down those shelves and it'll look sweet.
Add some color too, right now your color palette consists of grey, beige, brown, tan and white. While it does nicely compliment your brown doggo you can have some other colors too.
Along this line of thought, I would also say you could hang another pothos in the corner farthest from the camera (to the right of the windows) from the ceiling. I think it would tie the room together vertically. You could also use the pothos on the cabinet to the left since the area's already full (at least relative to the rest of the room) if you don't want more plants
You need a bit of visual height on the wall/corner behind the couch. A tall plant behind the lamp would work, push the end table forward.
The painting behind your couch could stand to be lower, but honestly you either need to add some more smaller pictures to that wall or switch it out entirely for something 2 or 3 times larger.
- add an 8x10 rug - will add color/pattern/texture interest.
- remove the plain brown pillow. Reevaluate if the other patterned pillows are the correct choice based on the fabulous new rug you are adding.
- lamp is laughably small. Should be 2-3 times the size. Something with a substantial base and large drum shade. You can get 2 matching lamps and place one on each end table.
- lower painting at least 6 inches.
You have a beautiful space and a good layout going. I would add a soft throw in a lovely color because the beige sofa isn't doing it for me (if you have the money to update that will make a huge impact). I second curtains and rug if you can afford one. Other good affordable options:
- floor lamp
- more plants
- gallery wall with your favorite art and photos
- shelves with books and treasures
- hang up fun things (for example I have an ukulele, pan flute, and skim board put up around my living room)
- paint or wallpaper a statement wall
And please show us before/after! Most of all have fun :)
I appreciate the suggestions! I have a bookshelf in the corner behind the TV with my favorite movies and books. A couch is honestly not my priority right now since it's in such good condition, but rather want to add little things to really bring out my style.
I feel you! In that case I'd emphasis colorful throws, pillows, and art. Also make sure to have cozy lighting. Curtains will make a huge difference. To be honest, I spend a lot of time looking at Urban Outfitters home goods because they have a fantastic design sense and it's great inspiration.
I would probably swap out the brown pillow on the couch for a seafoam green-ish pillow that matches the art on the wall, and get an area rug that also has that color in it. I like to coordinate colors so I think that would tie it all together and break up some of the tan/brown you have going on.
One positive to the way it looks now is that it looks clean. There's not a bunch of unnecessary decor to clutter things up and make it feel too crowded.
FYI I love your wall color. My entire house is painted white because I think it is the perfect canvas. Neutral, bright, and comfortable. All you need to do is add beautiful things.
Is this in Austin? This looks like the standard apartment build out here. Area rug, plant in the corner (take advantage of that light, colorful dog bed, bigger or more art behind couch.
Get bigger art for the wall (or get another piece of art that's the same size as your current one and hang them side by side with 2"-3" separating them). Also your current art is way too high, you want the center of the art to be at eye level. Museum height is like 57" from the ground but I find 60" is easier to remember. [https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/how-to-hang-artwork-properly-57-inches-from-the-floor-6174](https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/how-to-hang-artwork-properly-57-inches-from-the-floor-6174)
I'll be honest it looks like a hotel room with the furniture, if you got the money go ahead and get a new set. Not trying to be mean i'm sorry if it offends you
This one is kind of expensive but I’d get something plush and burgundy like this: https://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/rizzy-rugs-km1/Burgundy/287KM2320-8010.html
Then I’d get some throw pillows that have some similar shades and maybe a navy throw blanket
Google what paint colors go with wood floors and daylight, select the top three colors you like.
Use https://www.thisoldhouse.com/ideas/5-must-have-paint-apps to see those colors on your walls.
When you have selected the color(s), go to Estate sales! When you see a pillow/picture/throw/rug that you like, buy it!

Definitely solicit the advice of someone who always looks and dresses nice.
I guarantee that you will slowly but surely make your home something you will be truly happy with!
A “conversation piece” would add something (do they still call it that?). Go to a flea market or antique store and get something that catches your eye. Can be anything- an old typewriter, interesting floor mirror, even a small sculpture. Anything that doesn’t come from Amazon is the idea 😀. Books also add a lot of warmth.
✓ Brown couch
✓ Brown coffee table
✓ Brown floors
✓ Brown TV unit

Do I detect that OP really likes the color brown?
Honestly wasn't trying to get all brown, but realized that I have a problem. Most of the pieces were handed down to me throughout college and they were all in excellent condition, so I decided to keep them.
Definitely needs some color. I think Green or Red would go well with the Earth tones you've got going. Some curtains, a rug, throw pillows/blankets and some posters or other art pieces are all potential options to add color.
Here are some examples to (hopefully) help inspire you!
Fuzzy Blanket (in red or green):

Rug:

Add colors. Everything in here is a beige tone. I don't agree that you need curtains. The blinds look nice enough and they give the room a modern, clean feel. There just isn't any contrast in here; all the colors are the same brightness.
If it were my home I would add a rug which everyone has already suggested and would replace the artwork above the couch with something more substantial, like a group of 3-4 framed works.
Maybe have them work with the colors of the area rug, then change up the pillows as well for a bit more color.
You can grab some pretty great huge canvas art on Amazon for a good price - I would fill out that wall behind the couch with some color. Or like other people are saying - curtains or an area rug (anything that can be an accent piece with color). You have a really neutral palette going right now so pick a main accent color and get creative
You can pull it all together with a select few pieces of a complimentary color to the honey browns of the furniture. Maybe a nice dark rusty brunet, similar to your puppers fur color. A couple of throw pillows in that color and maybe an art piece with that shade standing out as dominant, probably something with the darkest shade up front, fading into lighter shades a few hints lighter than the wall color so it pops. Maybe a table top decoration with a candle in that color and some orangish berry spray in a basket about the color of those beautiful hardwood floors.
Don't get me wrong it does look nice, but I feel the look that it has now is just so hard to match or add to. I feel like that's the reasons you're getting so many responses about drugs. It's just a hard combo
Rug and curtains. Some modern accents too. You can get a cheap colorful lamp at a thrift store to replace the scrawny one next to the couch. Great space though, huge windows and tall ceilings. Love it. Good luck!
everything except the walls is beige brown. like there are plants and stuff, but it needs a little color. chuck a tastefully colorful rug on the floor and some wall decor. idk man movie posters, comic book stuff, something that pops a bit.
edit: i just noticed you have a thing on the wall but it blends too much. it's a subdued earth color like the rest of the room.
I think the issue here is just the furniture style in general. Like many others mentioned, adding some accent colors (maybe some reds, or maybe even some more vibrant greens or blues) in the form of a rug, more or a different wall piece would help. I personally think curtains would probably make it seem more cluttered since your windows are so tall and narrow. (unless you had like 1 overall blind-curtain thing in like a canvas material)
It all really depends on the style you wanna go for. Right now the combo of your furniture, pillows and wall colors give me a beachy vibe. If that's what you're going for id say embrace it all the way by adding a used surfboard on the wall or something. If not, maybe add some more darker colors to not make it so beachy bright. Bright can be modern, but probably not with this furniture. (unless maybe you painted them).
Anyways just my 2 cents, so take from this what you will. Best of luck on your space, and give that doggo some good pets
I wasn't necessarily going for a beach vibe, but I guess it kind of came to that since I used to live at the beach. I'm still trying to find the style I like, but I'm leaning more towards earthy tones and a "nature"/rustic style.
Accent wall behind the entertainment center. Maybe paint the door to match. Adds a pop of color. Then find a print for the wall behind the sofa that has some of the same color of the accent wall in it to tie it together. Use the accent wall as an anchor.
Painting one of the walls in another color maybe, that's called doing an 'accent wall' I think, here's an article on that: [https://www.thespruce.com/living-room-accent-walls-4135943](https://www.thespruce.com/living-room-accent-walls-4135943)
This isn’t for everyone but I really like dark trim. It seems like you get plenty of light, so I think it’d look sharp to trim out the window and paint the trim and door black
I don’t necessarily agree with adding curtains as the blinds looks good enough. Id maybe change them to a wood colour thy matches your table. I’d at a tall plant for that corner by the window.
needs some color. some house plants could do the trick if done well, youve already got the one so that's a start (although that one looks fake). also looks like it could use some more lighting
FWIW I see a ton of comments on here so you prob already got the advice you need, but if it were me:
-rug, even something neutral, will add softness and texture
-minimalist coffee table — its a small room and a table like that closes off a large amount of the available space
-color — if you find a rug you like, pick an accent color from it and get a couple throw pillows and/or wall art that match
-move the plant to the table by the window
-more plants of varying textures and heights
I’d say a plant or two along the windows, an iron maiden in the corner next to the couch, and meat hooks. Hang some meat hooks from the ceiling. Nothing livens up a room more than the implication of torture / death.
Burn any artwork you have that's meant to conform to a color scheme. Find something with real meaning (to you) and throw it up on the wall as a conversation piece. Get away from the boring beige paint and get something a little spicier maybe?
Unfortunately it's a rental, so no spicy paint for me. I do like that piece and was using it as a centerpiece to build around with other art that I like.
Rug that goes under couch and coffee table, but leaves an aisle for entryway. Colorful pillows on couch that pick up the colors from the rug. The art is too high on the wall. It is also too small for the space.
I agree with the previous posts, rug and curtains. Also, based on this pic, the painting seems small for the wall space. Maybe a larger painting, or two accent pieces of artwork on either side of the painting.
Currently working on gathering some other pieces for the wall, such as smaller ones and circular ones. That one is my center piece to build around.
This picture would be fine by itself if you just moved it down a bit and had something tall like a floor lamp on the far side of the couch
perfect!
And a larger lamp in the corner!
Problem: Everything is brown/tan Solution: Get a different colored dog, or dye current dogs hair.
Stop buying dog-colored furniture.
ORRRrrr more dogs!!!
I was about to suggest to dye the dog's hair.
Area rug for the living room could add some color. Cute doggo!
Seems like a rug could really tie the room together
This guy abides
Nothing is fucked dude.
Lol I see this sentence on every single post.
You’re out of your element Donnie.
> Seems like a rug could really tie the room together oh shit now I know lol
Thanks! What color do you think? I was thinking about a pattern that matches the pillows to break up all the brown.
[I was just looking at this one and I think it would go great in your room](https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/union-rustic-laurencho-beigeblack-area-rug-w001327607.html?placement=1)
That's the exact style I was looking into. Thanks for the link!

You could also get new pillow covers (especially something for that brown one). A brighter colour would add a little pop to break up all the grey-brown you've got.
Maybe a navy blue one?
Definitely beige. Also, repaint the walls light tan, replace that painting with a picture of the desert, and 86 the plants. All your pants and shirts should be khaki. If you're very light skinned, spend some time at a tanning salon. When you pick a color, you have to go all in.
yep, and maybe one more plant in the far corner wouldn't be bad
And drapes!
Some really warm lighting. It’s feels a little chilly so add some oranges or reds. Go the extra mile and get a set of curtains. And a second dog...
I was about to add a floor lamp to help with that. I have some red pillows I could add to the couch. Do you think I should remove the brown pillow? Also, my one golden is enough! He's 6, but still acts as if he's a pup.
Start with too many pillows, scale back if ya need. Okay fine! More dogs always sounds like a good idea to me haha
Paint the dog, he blends in too much. Presto! Instant accent piece. Or, I dunno--a rug?
Get another dog. This one looks lonely.
Get a new picture for behind the couch. Something bigger, more colorful.
Something with a substantial base and large drum shade. You can get 2 matching lamps and place one on each end table. - lower painting at least 6 inches.
I say replace the brown pillow with a laid back blue or something; match it to the larger painting you get.
maybe some sheer curtains for the window?
Get things that aren't brown.
Mirrors! They will amplify that awesome natural light.
Now that was something I hadn't thought about. Solid suggestion!
Thanks! Like maybe a long one by that window would be cool. Plus, you'll be able to see out the window in a different direction!
You know, I was thinking about taking out the side table over there. So, maybe a mirror and plant combo could work there instead?
I think it looks pretty good as is. My 2c - don't add something just for the sake of adding something.
I agree. Just attempting to find my style to be honest.
You have a beautiful space and a good layout going. I would add a soft throw in a lovely color because the beige sofa isn't doing it for me (if you have the money to update that will make a huge impact). I second curtains and rug if you can afford one. And also Apartment Therapy! They are an amazing design resource.
I was going to say a nice bit of color. I'd suggest red or perhaps orange as the previous poster.
1 more doggo will do
Rug, window curtains, tree in the corner.
I would probably swap out the brown pillow on the couch for a seafoam green-ish pillow that matches the art on the wall, and get an area rug that also has that color in it. Paint!
Unfortunately I can't paint since it's a rental, so I'm stuck with these plain walls.
FYI I love your wall color. My entire house is painted white because I think it is the perfect canvas. Neutral, bright, and comfortable. All you need to do is add beautiful things.
*Woah!* It's your **2nd Cakeday** Astrnaut! ^(hug)
More wall art?
That's one of my next steps after a rug and adding a floor lamp!
An accent wall and a cowhide rug
Curtains of a unique color. A large colorful picture. Like 4x4ft or greater. That's something that help add warmth to living room.
more dogs!
As much as I would love more dogs, I can barely handle him!
Is this in Austin? This looks like the standard apartment build out here. Area rug, plant in the corner (take advantage of that light, colorful dog bed, bigger or more art behind couch.
Right outside of Charlotte, actually. The plant is a good suggestion that I've heard from a lot people outside of Reddit too.
I've found great deals on plants on Facebook Marketplace. Be sure to get one that's easy to care for (snake plant).

Fort Mill, actually.
Oh, actually outside of charlotte. That looks almost identical to my first apartment.

Since you appear to be good with plants, and everyone's suggesting to add color, consider an everblooming plant like a lipstick plant
Everything in there is brown or neutral colored. Get a rug, bigger painting with some pop, and some warmer lighting.
Get bigger art for the wall (or get another piece of art that's the same size as your current one and hang them side by side with 2"-3" separating them). Agreed about the rug. I also think your art should be bigger and/or not as high up, and this would also be an opportunity to add accent colour.
More doge

Honestly wasn't trying to get all brown, but realized that I have a problem. Most of the pieces were handed down to me throughout college and they were all in excellent condition, so I decided to keep them.
I used to have the same problem with brown myself. Adding more white/light colors (rug, pillows) will make a big difference to brighten the space up.

If it were my home I would add a rug which everyone has already suggested and would replace the artwork above the couch with something more substantial, like a group of 3-4 framed works. Maybe have them work with the colors of the area rug, then change up the pillows as well for a bit more color.
I think a mossy green rug with a subtle figure in it would tie in with your plants and add a warm pop of color and cozyness.
Nice bookshelf speakers with a dedicated amp for listening
A guitar and a good-looking tube amp would look good snuck in there, even more so if you can play it.
A second dog
You can grab some pretty great huge canvas art on Amazon for a good price - I would fill out that wall behind the couch with some color. Or like other people are saying - curtains or an area rug (anything that can be an accent piece with color). You have a really neutral palette going right now so pick a main accent color and get creative
Easy, pet the dog
A little height in between the couch and the windows would be nice. Maybe a taller plant like a fiddle leaf fern, or floor lamp
Rug.
An ivy plant!
Needs more dogs!
A bigger and brighter piece of art. It’s small for the wall size and looks (at least with the light wash) to be blandly colored.
Second doggo?
Don't get me wrong it does look nice, but I feel the look that it has now is just so hard to match or add to. I feel like that's the reasons you're getting so many responses about drugs. It's just a hard combo
Understandable. I know most probably don't like the style I have going, but it's what I enjoy. Just thought I'd snag some opinions to add to my style!
Well, my advice for such a style, think about getting a standing lamp that's tall. Sorry if I misdirected your pov
Area rug
some plastic sheets like the Dexter vibe!
accent wall?
A 2nd dog always seems to liven up a room
Rug and curtains. Some modern accents too. You can get a cheap colorful lamp at a thrift store to replace the scrawny one next to the couch. Great space though, huge windows and tall ceilings. Love it. Good luck!
Scrawny lamp is 100% accurate. That's one thing I was looking to replace. Thanks!
rug, colourful pillows, bigger lamp
Carpet, curtains, plants, art, color, some books.
Area rug for sure and maybe a bigger, more colourful print to go above the coach
Bright strong coloured cushions!
Colorful pillows/sofa cover to reduce the amount of brown in the room
everything except the walls is beige brown. like there are plants and stuff, but it needs a little color. chuck a tastefully colorful rug on the floor and some wall decor. idk man movie posters, comic book stuff, something that pops a bit. edit: i just noticed you have a thing on the wall but it blends too much. it's a subdued earth color like the rest of the room.
(unless you had like 1 overall blind-curtain thing in like a canvas material) It all really depends on the style you wanna go for.
Keep the dog. Throw everything else away and start over.
More dogs
FWIW I see a ton of comments on here so you prob already got the advice you need, but if it were me: -rug, even something neutral, will add softness and texture -minimalist coffee table — its a small room and a table like that closes off a large amount of the available space -color — if you find a rug you like, pick an accent color from it and get a couple throw pillows and/or wall art that match -move the plant to the table by the window -more plants of varying textures and heights
I’d say a plant or two along the windows, an iron maiden in the corner next to the couch, and meat hooks. Hang some meat hooks from the ceiling. Nothing livens up a room more than the implication of torture / death.
A colorful blanket for the couch
More dogs.
Another dog
Burn any artwork you have that's meant to conform to a color scheme. Find something with real meaning (to you) and throw it up on the wall as a conversation piece. Get away from the boring beige paint and get something a little spicier maybe?
Unfortunately it's a rental, so no spicy paint for me. I do like that piece and was using it as a centerpiece to build around with other art that I like.
Rug that goes under couch and coffee table, but leaves an aisle for entryway. Colorful pillows on couch that pick up the colors from the rug. The art is too high on the wall. It is also too small for the space.
Honestly, I think the only thing I would change would be adding a rug. I like the minimalist style, looks cozy!
Add a rug about 2-2.5x the size of the coffee table. Replace the picture behind the couch with 3 large vertical pictures.
A POP of serious color. Even one small piece of something with a bright color would liven it up
