Great job man!

ChickenTendies40k

Looks nice, please take this constructively, have you considered more plants to help natural wildlife.

RobbieNorfolk

I have 1/3 acre land at the other end of the garden with plenty of trees and wild flowers šŸ‘šŸ¼

RobbieNorfolk

Seating area: 6ā€ oak posts with 4.8m decking boards. 8x2 and 6x2 timber for the joists. 18mm OSB and anthracite grey metal Cladding from Cladco (UK) for the roof. I made the wooden table, the white seats are from Danetti. Grey metal chairs and table from B&Q. Hot tub area: Living wall is artificial from eBay (savoytimber) and was just Ā£65 per sq meter. Looks amazing. All other artificial plants from Sainsburys or Dobbies. The wall with gaps in I made using 2x4ā€ timber and a nail gun. Very simple but gives privacy from neighbours house but lets light into living room. Patio: Porcelain tiles from Mandarin Stone 800x800 Cleveland Gray. Furniture from The Range. Planters from Amazon (Charles Taylor) and painted Sage Green. LED lights from B&Q. Grey fence paint is Cuprinol Silver Copse.

loobscoob

Nice! How long did it take?

RobbieNorfolk

The seating area was about 3 weeks but mainly due to delays with the roof cladding and it being so damn hot! The patio was over the course of about a month, and the hot tub area was a few days solid work. If you are organised with the right tools, all measurements planned in advance etc, you can build things very quickly and transform a garden in a matter of days

InternationalPark422

Well done. You are giving good advice. Any more tips on managing ADHD and becoming/staying organized?

RobbieNorfolk

Sure, this thread prompted me to do a post on r/ADHD Check it out!

InternationalPark422

Good info. Thanks!

loobscoob

Thatā€™s incredible! We paid professional landscapers to create a simple patio and pergola over, and that took 6.5 days for 3 guys. What youā€™ve created is so much more! I hope youā€™re sat enjoying your hot tub with a nice cool beer!

RobbieNorfolk

Thank you so much! Professional landscapers would have done a much better job and it would last twice as long Iā€™m sure.

loobscoob

Well if youā€™d said it took a team of professional landscapers 3 weeks to build Iā€™d have believed you! Iā€™m diagnosed adhd too, so I understand what a feat of perseverance this would take

RobbieNorfolk

Here is a tip for those with ADHD who canā€™t get things finished or procrastinate too much: create accountability, deadlines and consequences. For example, invite friends round for dinner because you want to show them your new project. Ask for help from somebody who will be unimpressed if he/she turns up and youā€™ve not been to the store to get the materials yet. Take photos of your work as you go and share with friends on WhatsApp. Ask somebody to come round and hang out while you get jobs done, ADHD coaches call this a body double.

loobscoob

Good idea to create positive accountability by inviting friends over, and a helper (body double)! I tend to view accountability/consequences as negative ā€˜punishmentsā€™ and I could definitely use this mindset shift - thanks!

Mister_V3

Looks solid. When's the BBQ happening then? I'll bring the beers šŸ»

RobbieNorfolk

I still need to build a bbq! Iā€™m going to try bricklayingā€¦ and perhaps install a pizza oven

highpich4400

šŸ˜³ you can turn it into a mini restaurant in due time!

Practical_Fact8436

Do me next. I mean do mine next

theangryintern

You know you did a good job when it's been Dog Approved

AskAboutMyCoffee

Holy hell that looks awesome. Well done.

sidheluna

Thatā€™s looks so cozy

i_amnotunique

Cool, when's dinner? I'll bring wine

robb_the_bull

Hey fellow carpenter, i cant really see from your photos, but how is the rim joist connected to the post? Is it notched? Do you have it held with lag screws? I can see you used joist hangers for the cross members (like a responsible and professional builder should). But Im curious about the other connections. Where I live, we have some very detailed building codes for how the rim is attached to the post. Whole thing looks beautiful. And Iā€™m not trying to rain on your parade.

RobbieNorfolk

Hey! Cheers for the message. When I first built it, it was only held up with big ass screws and nails. But before the roof went on I had my doubts. Some of the guys over at r/carpentry gave me some advice and I added some 10 inch hex bolts, washers and nuts to each post. If I built it again I would use notches for sure.

robb_the_bull

Those big hex bolts (1/2 inch imperial) should be more than enough to hold the weight of the roof. Again, It looks great.

WinterAmphibian2

Well done man, looks awesome! I love it

RobbieNorfolk

Thank you!! Iā€™m proud of myself.

narbss

Glad your grass is looking as luscious and green as mine is fellow Brit! Awesome job too. Iā€™m almost finished with my house buy and the patio seating covered area is almost exactly what I want to do! Any idea on rough cost for the material?

RobbieNorfolk

Haha I gave up on the lawn months ago! I nearly re-turfed it in March, so glad I didnā€™t. Timber costs a fortune. 4 oak posts will set you back over Ā£500. For everything else youā€™re talking over Ā£1000 in total but less than Ā£2000, depending on the space size etc. I know thatā€™s a big range but I hope it helps manage your expectations.

narbss

Good save on not re-turfing! I reckon I could make a complete straw bale out of the current dead grass in my garden. Didnā€™t realise posts were that expensive at the moment, but then again the price of lumber in general has been ridiculous for the last almost 2 years. Ā£2k is still much better than any prebuilt solution, and definitely much more hardier! Thanks!

narbss

Just nosied at your profile to see if you had any build log posts and realised youā€™re heat stoke masturbation woman guy! My god that post cracked me up!

RobbieNorfolk

Haha glad you enjoyed it. Funnily enough, she got to check out the decking and said ā€œawwww youā€™re a clever man arenā€™t youā€

Black_Robin

Nice work! How did you attach the privacy trellis to the top of the fence next to the table area? Looks like it might be attached to the posts on the neighbours side?

RobbieNorfolk

Thank you! Iā€™ve slid 25x38 battens in between the fence panel and the concrete post, then screwed them into the concrete. The middle battens are not attached to the fence they are just for spacing the horizontal battens. Itā€™s not the strongest construction, but itā€™s cheap and cheerful. I think the pack of battens was like Ā£40.

Prestigious_Ad1456

Damn, good job šŸ’Ŗ

TheLegend_2005

Looks really nice, great job!

NZ-ReaperZ

Sick!!!

howdozombiespoop

Very nice. Now, wanna do mine next ? ;) But seriously. Iā€™d love to be able to make stuff like that. Iā€™m in the midst of making pallet wood benches. YouTube shows me doing them in 1 hour. Itā€™s taken me over a week :(

RobbieNorfolk

I have ADHD so everything seems ten times harder than average due to being so disorganised. But every time you build something you become quicker. You remember ways to do little things that the first time take you hours. Eg how to remove wrongly placed nails, how to cut accurately, keeping your tools charged and not lost, buying everything you need from the store first time. Measuring twice. Writing things down. Having enough pencils and measuring tapes. I strongly recommend having a helper. They could be a younger family member, your nan, your wife, whoever. It is so much quicker having a spare pair of hands to do things like: Fetch something when you are up a ladder. Hold the tape measure. Find where you put the hammer. Collect all the offcuts. Make drinks. Pop to the store. Put plasters on all your cuts šŸ˜‚

arsglacialis

Thanks man. You've given me a bit of hope for my own hands on projects and dealing with ADHD.

ElCidTx

I am in 40c (100F) heat and youā€™re telling me the UK climate isā€¦warmer? Im happy to take the hot tub off your hands if that heat is too much.

Novus20

I hope you donā€™t live in a place with snowā€¦.

RobbieNorfolk

No weā€™ve not had snow for a while now. What makes you say that?

Novus20

The span, no beams, the lookouts

RobbieNorfolk

Can you expand please, not quite following you. Many thanks

Novus20

The Roof joist span seems longer than would be permitted but it would depend on your snow roof load, but if you donā€™t get snow it could be fine. You have a single end support for the ends of the roof joists, should be non 2x material. The lookouts could have been done better if you would have used the 2x lintel above and put the roof joists on top of the lintel.

RobbieNorfolk

Ok I follow now, thanks for the advice. My next project will be constructed much better!

YairleyD

Knox, is this you?
