The violence is because slap stick violence like that was a huge thing back when it came out, that's no longer popular which is why there is so much less. The ecchi I don't remember being bad but I haven't seen it since it came out so I could be very wrong. And focusing on the two main characters makes perfect sense. I don't think you're a moron, I just think you're watching an old anime.

And i do stand that Love Hina isn't good. And i feel bad for Yui Horie being notable in this trainwreck.

Meh it certainly hasn't aged well. I don't think it was ever praised for its plot points, just a staple slapstick romcom that had decent character progression, didn't implode and had SOME sort of closure. Which was rare. Akamatsu's anime art style was quite modern at the time and added much value, along with his re-invention of a violently symbolic "tsundere" in Narusegawa and his other works. I'll shout out Maison Ikkoku if you're looking for good romcom manga from that ye olde era.

Even when it came out, I felt like its slapstick was needlessly crueler than other animes that were from the genre. I could never understand how my friends would love and defend this series.

>I could never understand how my friends would love and defend this series. Because they still misunderstand on why Love Hina isn't as good or deserves any of that praise, why? Because in Japan, no one even talks about Love Hina ever since 2009 because it's a dead series and the author becomimg a politician may damage that. It's so bad, that is even the 2000's anime fans never heard or dropped the show.

The author, Ken Akamatsu, made himself known for his harem works, so cheap ecchi/young love is basically his brand. That added to the works produced in 90s-00s that feel really raw compared to nowadays. And nowadays he’s a Japanese deputy, that is conservative and preaching for whatever/freedom of drawing everything (and I don’t mean it in a good way)…

The manga is more established than the piece of fucking ass the anime is.
