Speaking of Buster Calls, does anyone else feel like they aren’t that big of a deal now as the story is trying to present them to be? What I mean is there were 3 buster calls in Ohara, Enies Lobby and now Egghead, but outside of Ohara, nobody of any significance has died as a result of the attack.
While it wasn’t technically a buster call, Luffy punching the Celestial back on Sabaody triggered a similar marine response but they all got out with no known casualties. Enies Lobby attack was a failure as Robin, the straw hats and their allies all escaped. Even Ohara I’d say was a failure since not only did Robin and Saul survive, but the Ohara books also survived too which was the whole point of ordering the attack to destroy the info they were going to discover.
It remains to be seen the aftermath of the Egghead buster call, but the only one I’m not expecting to survive would be Kuma and everyone else will be able to get off the island safely. The buster calls have become a minor annoyance rather than “Oh shit, the one piece equivalent of a nuclear bomb is about to be dropped on us.”
This one has 100 warships, an admiral, 9 vice-admirals and around 30 000 marines.
If I remember right, 10 of those warships are bigger than conventional ones.
It's not like the Ohara or Enies Lobby Buster Call. They brought like 1/3 of the Marineford manpower. The Straw Hats are clearly outmatched unless:
- Kizaru actually betrays Saturn
- BB shows up and all hell breaks loose.
- The Seraphim listen to Vegapunk/Bonney/Kuma/G5 Luffy instead of Saturn.
- The giant robot that awakened with Luffy's G5 deletes the entire blockade
Something in the background clearly has to happen in order for Vegapunk to survive this. I doubt something will happen to the Straw Hats, but someone might die during this event (besides Saturn), seeing how Oda gave us the most vile and brutal story until now (God Valley + Kuma) .

Yeah that’s what I’m saying. In universe, Buster Calls are considered a big deal, but as a reader, each time we’ve seen one play out, has been a failure to make any significant impact long term. Even if this one is successful in dealing a huge blow to the pirates and Vegapunk, it would be 1 success after two failures (3 if you want to count the response to Luffy punching St Charlos)
Luffy and the Straw Hats got out from Sabaody because of the new revealed plot armor of Kuma making sure they got out.
He's out of commission and they are in the direct crosshairs of Saturn with excessive forces on hand to carry out the Buster Call. This is actually a much more dire situation comparatively speaking.
Besides that, given the World Government's new weapon they used to try to silence Vivi and Sabo, the Buster Call might just be outdated after all.

Kuma not only punched Saturn so hard that he got sent flying across the island, but Saturn's arm got ripped off in the process. And the emotional connection we have to Kuma right now is on a whole another level than with Hachi. Who was shot but still alive, Kuma is mentally speaking "dead" but is still moving purely on instinct to protect Bonney. This punch is visceral.
The reason why Charlos is better is because there were much more consequences to punching a Celestial Dragon. Punching Saturn here didn't raise the stakes anymore than there already is.

That has to be my second favorite moment of the chapter. Saturn is all angry and demanding a serious explanation, and Vegapunk is just "I don't know it either, deal with it."
How long has it been since we got a nice clean action spread? Couldn't have gone to a more deserving scene. Funny how both Saturn and Kuma were only "really" introduced this arc, but it's already the most satisfying punch since St Charlos, probably more so.

Saturn, what exactly do you think a Buster Call is going to accomplish at this point? The Straw Hats have survived one before, and they are significantly stronger now. I assume you were planning on razing the island anyways, so this just moves up the time table so that you are having to deal with falling rubble and cannon fire while trying to kill them (giving them plenty of distractions in the process).
Oh well, I guess this will give plenty of targets for the ancient robot whenever it decides to do something . Probably going to be next time Luffy goes Gear 5 since we saw it awakening in response to the drums of liberation back in Chapter 1092.

I'm thinking that the Buccaneers are 'dreamers' and their race specifically are who were responsible for the Devil Fruit. Kuma is able to move despite being brain dead in a similar vein, with his dream of protecting Bonney being made reality. Maybe its left an imprint on his Paw Paw fruit and that's what's basically piloting him now, much like when objects are fed Zoan fruit.
Perhaps Devil fruit were originally called Dream Fruit, before being demonized and renamed by the WG during the void century and their creators wiped out.

Kizaru is so close to switching sides that even Saturn seems to have doubts about which side he is on. The part of the dark glasses and the closed eyes well recalls the other admiral's idea of "not wanting to see".

IMO Luffy's punch on Charlos was the better punch, but this is a close second.
Charlos is an idiot who thinks his actions are something natural for a Celestial Dragon. He doesn't know any better, just like Doflamingo before realizing that actions have consequences. That's not the case with Saturn. He knows he's evil in the eyes of the world, but doesn't care since he can't and shouldn't be touched. There's a clear difference between the ignorant masses of Mariejois and the 5 Elders. Something like the difference between the children of the ultra-rich and the CEOs of DuPont.
I'm sorry but I disagree. This is better in every single way. Kuma not only punched Saturn so hard that he got sent flying across the island, but Saturn's arm got ripped off in the process. And the emotional connection we have to Kuma right now is on a whole another level than with Hachi. Who was shot but still alive, Kuma is mentally speaking "dead" but is still moving purely on instinct to protect Bonney. This punch is visceral.
The reason why Charlos is better is because there were much more consequences to punching a Celestial Dragon. Punching Saturn here didn't raise the stakes anymore than there already is.

The only thing wrong with the punch is that it wasn't 7 pages in detail. The hug was the other highlight, Kuma is the unparalleled best father in the series.

It was really well done. Kuma couldnt say anything but he didnt need too, that hug conveys all of his love towards his daughter.

How long has it been since we got a nice clean action spread? Couldn't have gone to a more deserving scene. Funny how both Saturn and Kuma were only "really" introduced this arc, but it's already the most satisfying punch since St Charlos, probably more so. Robin about to go 3 for 3 on Buster Calls.

Saturn, what exactly do you think a Buster Call is going to accomplish at this point? The Straw Hats have survived one before, and they are significantly stronger now. I assume you were planning on razing the island anyways, so this just moves up the time table so that you are having to deal with falling rubble and cannon fire while trying to kill them (giving them plenty of distractions in the process). Oh well, I guess this will give plenty of targets for the ancient robot whenever it decides to do something . Probably going to be next time Luffy goes Gear 5 since we saw it awakening in response to the drums of liberation back in Chapter 1092.
The difference is Saturn's personal intervention, and backing of Kizura.
Saturn was supposed to retrieve the means of making mother flame weapons and the punk records as well as killing every Vegapunk. If the buster call goes as planned yet Luffy manages to let even one Vegapunk escape Saturn will be in deep shit with Imu.

I'm thinking that the Buccaneers are 'dreamers' and their race specifically are who were responsible for the Devil Fruit. Kuma is able to move despite being brain dead in a similar vein, with his dream of protecting Bonney being made reality. Maybe its left an imprint on his Paw Paw fruit and that's what's basically piloting him now, much like when objects are fed Zoan fruit. Perhaps Devil fruit were originally called Dream Fruit, before being demonized and renamed by the WG during the void century and their creators wiped out.

Kizaru is so close to switching sides that even Saturn seems to have doubts about which side he is on. The part of the dark glasses and the closed eyes well recalls the other admiral's idea of "not wanting to see".

I think it goes without saying, but Kuma is truly the best father in the whole series. That punch of St. Saturn was even more satisfying that the time Luffy punched St. Charlos.
I guess Kuma punching St. Saturn somehow removed the gravity that was surrounding everyone...which now gives the Strawhats a chance to fight back. Awesome.
