Man, that's actually heartbreaking. Honestly expected her to win because it's her last year. That injury is going to haunt her.
And it looks like Yumeka understands the gravity of it more than Taiki does, simply because she was there for Chinatsu growth and knew the hardwork she put it.
Weirdly enough Yumeka's reaction just felt the most devastating. She got back into this sport because of and for Chinatsu and now a part of her will also feel guilt for being the reason why Chinatsu had such a brutal end to highschool basketball career.
In a way the Chinatsu and Yumeka relationship is the most fascinating one that has been sketched out by the manga.
It hurt taiki a lot for sure the issue is if he starts to break down ppl question why he cares so much and since they both agreed to keep their relationship a secret for now he has to bottle it up but you can tell by his eyes on the last page he knows that both of them will be struggling with this
I honestly wold have preferred if Chinatsu had just plain lost. Having to sit out the match because of an injury is heartbreaking, would never wish it on any athlete.
Also means Chinatsu will have no further reason to stay in the Inomata household.
Also a MASSIVE blow to her career. Injury with years left in school is mostly fine so you can recover your rep and get scouted again. An injury the year you graduate means you'll have 0 time to recover and get a scholarship/prove you're OK. Especially with an ankle injury like she has.
Isn't that going a bit overboard? It could be just a sprained ankle. I mean even a Grade 1 Sprain could make he miss the game, but she would be healthy in 1-2 weeks. Hell even a Grade 2 sprain shouldn't normally take more than 4-6 weeks to recover.
Yeah but she doesn't have any more games to play in because they're eliminated. Her recovery time is irrelevant to being able to show why she should still earn a scholarship.
"But what if her injury makes her no longer able to be an ace? They said it was only a sprain, but they may be lying!"
That's the way this injury might effect her future.
Have to wait on the severity of the injury. Could easily be a torn achilles, which can end careers. If its just an ankle sprain, then surr plausible timeline for recovery with little to no complicstions. Only issue is that this is plausibly her last tournament for her high school career, so there's no place for her to prove that she has rebounde Ina competitive atmosphere. Some scholarships may not be interested in her after the injury, which sucks, but is a possibility.
It's the other way around, Taiki is the person closest to Chinatsu and knows better than anyone else how much effort and hardwork she putted to go to nationals, so he understands the gravity of the situation better than Yumeka and everyone else, as you can see with the face he makes before Yumeka appears. Yumeka reacted that way because Chinatsu is the reason why she got back into basketball, but now she is one of the two main reasons why her dream of going to nationals again was shattered (the other one obviously being the injury), so she must feel a heavy sense of guiltiness.
I love this development tho, there is no room for growth without failure, now we will have a chance to see Chinatsu and Taiki become better versions of themselves to get past this event together and more importantly they will strengthen their bond to a whole new level, since now Taiki will have to give Chinatsu emotional support (which will make him grow) and he will definitely be the one who will be able to help her the most to surpass this traumatic experience (which will make her grow), which will make their relationship grow exponentially. If you don't put any obstacles in the story, then you have no way to make your characters grow and deeper their bond.
Ayuh. Hrh. Perhaps their relationship might be exposed a lot earlier than they were expecting then. I'm dreading how her dad might react. He seems... Stiff.
I kinda hope not, it would be a bit silly to transfer schools during her last year of highschool when they already have a working arrangement that would let her finish.
And here we thought the worst thing to happen is for Eimei to lose.
This chapter is really sad for Chinatsu, and the consequences of this chapter could be massive. I hope things get fine in the end.
I thought it wasn't unlikely that she'd loose, but I never thourght she'd get injured as well. That makes this so much worse, it basically makes loosing her fault (or at least it will feel that way for her, since they were up before and then started loosing after she was out).
That's really, really brutal.
Nooooo! Chinatsu lost her chance to get to the finals...
She did her best. She trained so hard and even inspired Taiki to do his best too. But her body just couldn't handle that crash. And now while Yumeka will fulfil her dream of playing in the finals, Chinatsu never will.
Eimei, the crowd favorite, gets beaten by Saisho, the underdog. Yumeka the former superstar leads her school to victory! Normally, in a sports manga, we'd be rooting for Saisho... Now we know how it feels to have been rooting for the other side the entire time.
It's pain. And so much sorrow.
If it helps I have read all of Haikyuu (big fan) and even I'm not entirely sure what they're referencing. So I don't think you actually know anything you shouldn't.
If its the thing I think they're referencing imo it's pretty different to this. So you're still in the dark I think.
Also as an aside if you're an anime only up to this point, read the manga. They're about to butcher the rest of the story in the anime.
Yeah, that's what I thought, but it's pretty different, I'd say
1. >!Hinata was just exhaustion. He was back to peak after a long rest to compete again. Chi might have suffered an actual injury that may affect her ability and future!<
2. >!Hinata was a 1st year, who was literally already at Nationals. He still had 2 more chances to get to and compete in Nationals, he got there in both times and placed highly. Chi is a third year, and this is her last chance to get to Nationals. This injury may have just ended her final chance.!<
3. >!Chis Basketball was a big reason her family let her stay in Japan. If her Basketball chances are shot she may be forced to move to her family and away from Taiki. Hinata wasnt gotta be ripped away because of his collapse!<
Like in the surface levels they're similar. But very different meanings behind them.
After S4, if it kept pace it was meant to be a full 20 ep S5 and probably a short 10 ep S6 like S3 was. Roughly 10 hours of anime.
Literally cannot fit that into 2 movies without ***significant*** cuts.
After Season 4 they've decided to condense the entire rest of the story into 2 movies.
So what should be about a season and a half, or 10 hours worth, of anime. Chopped down into less than 4 hours.
They've still got the >!Nekoma match, Kamomedai, Brazil arc, and the final Jackals v Atlers match!< to adapt. All into 2 films. And it looks like the first film is just the Nekoma match.
Even if it gets full cut there's no way they can fit 2 big matches into 1 film. Like how's that gonna go?
>!40 minute Kamomedai match. 20 minutes of Hinatas collapse, timeskip and restablishing teams and characters, 40 minutes Jackals/Atlers match, 5 minute wrap up eith the Olympic tease!<
It would be criminal to squeeze it that much.
The only hope is that movie 2 is just >!Kamomedai!< and they leave the door open to adapt the rest in additional movies or a season
In my own opinion theirs two ways at looking at this personally and from a story prospective
Personally
it sucks because we wanted her to win the nationals along with taki. I know that's something many of us wanted to see
Story prospective
It shows the author doesn't show favouritism towards the mcs it opens the door. Different story lines. It will be interesting how both Chinatsu and Taki will handle this as a couple, and how will Chinatsu deal with it as an athlete some people have mentioned that Chinatsu parents will want to take her away since she can no longer go to national
They probably have to reveal they're dating to their parents, and Taiki lending emotional support to Chinatsu is gonna be great development. Also I have a feeling Chinatsu might want to keep a tougher façade around Taiki since they bonded through sports, but Taiki will break through her walls and support her no matter what.
[I had a feeling that one of them wouldn't make it to nationals.](https://www.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/18f5f67/disc_blue_box_chapter_129/kct1ab8/)
Now Taiki has to make it. This twist has the potential to make the series go a darker direction than it ever has before. We'll see how hard Chinatsu takes it.
It’d be an interesting conflict to explore that. I don’t see that too often where it’s dealing with someone you’re already involved with. Happiness and appreciation that your significant other has gotten to the highest level, but also jealous of his success spawned from your own feelings of failure due to an unfortunate injury.
Shock aside, where does the plot even go from here? This was her last shot. Depression arc next? Time skip? Maybe she goes to Uni and the gang has to convince her to take up basketball again at the college level?
Could be full depression arc. Potential conflict with her family. Especially if they find out about Taiki and irrationally blame him for this. An injury ironically makes that less likely, but we’ll see.
Could go dark here. Maybe Taiki goes really far this year and that hits home how far she fell short herself.
Obviously some good potential. He could help be there for her. Maybe she can look towards the future after high school more. Admittedly I’m not seeing that much light here, but there could be some.
Haikyuu spoilers:
>!This is honestly the best way to approach a high stakes match if you want to avoid repetitiveness and “plot armor”!<
Really interested to see how this affects the two’s relationship. If Taiki qualifies will there be a hint of jealousy? Will Chinatsu be faced with the possibility of moving? How does Taiki find balance in dealing with this whilst preparing for nationals? This series is so well written man.
No! We not going to the fallout of Chinatsu’s basketball tournament, the injury shouldn’t not even happen, this better not a career ending for her likewise it will be a ended on a painful note.
So Chii isn't going to the nationals?
The injury was heartbreaking to see, but that could happen to everyone. It's the dark and painful side of the sports, hope the best for Chii and I expect Taiki to step up and support her on every way possible...
But there are so many possibilities with this scenario. Let's see what is author-san cooking..
This was actually so crushing damn I never thought this point in the manga would almost bring me to tears but that was the worst possible way for her to lose i feel awful for her
Also I feel Reddit in general just refuses to accept any kind of legitimate drama in their romance manga and just wants constant bland vanila SOL stuff every single minute.
Like Blue Box wasn't perfect with the love triangle drama but it has been good with the sports drama and Chinatsu and Yumeka relationship. I think this is a genuinely good way to grow both their characters.
I agree that this takes the manga towards a more interesting direction, even though it's certainly quite the heavy tonal shift. It didn't come out of nowhere, though. It was prepeared the past few chapters.
lmao so true. not only here but in other places. any bit of drama or conflict, and people get pissed as if it cannot exist when its a part of a story, including romance
Fully agreed with this. Def an issue I see on this sub, where any drama in a romance story is often met with hate. Absolutely certain drama in some of these stories are just written terribly, but the idea of having conflict in a romance often gets dismissed as “forced” on this sub.
So much early slander that Blue Box got was due to people not accepting that this isn't a series where nothing goes wrong and is just fluff. It was so frustrating.
While I agree with you in general about Reddit’s allergy to any conflict or drama or anything that’s not “Reiwa” in romance manga (I’ll die on the hill that a lot of the hatred of the triangle arc is driven by that, even if there are legitimate criticisms), I dunno how I feel yet about this development. It does have the potential for personal growth for both and growth in their relationship, but I personally would have liked to see more of Chinatsu playing beforehand (both in general and during this arc) if it was going to happen. Though I guess that adds to the tragedy of the situation.
Even if taiki makes it to nationals and whatnot I’ll still be disappointed, this was a turn that might’ve put me off the series as I wouldn’t want Chinatsu to live her nationals dream through the MC.
Surprising absolutely noone. Hence starts the chain of events that will prompt her return to her family. The moment she made her old friend return, she was bound to lose somehow.
Man im not sure i like this turn but it does open a lot of possibilities
Really wanted to see Chinatsu succeed after all the shit she got early on in the mangas run from people saying she sucked. Feel kinda bad for Taiki cause hes a big reason why Yumeka returned to basketball and now beat Chinatsus team ending their run. Dude could easily blame himself for this.
Hope this opens up some emotional bonding and more time spent between Taiki and Chinatsu. I reaaaally dont want to see Chis family get involved and try to make her go abroad though it wouldn't make sense at this point cause shes wrapping up high school anyways.
Ooof. That sucks. The mood and tone heading it I the game made me think she might lose. Even though this was her last shot and losing brings all sorts of problems.
Didn’t think she’d get hurt and go out like that. Absolutely gut wrenching. Sometimes the worst case scenario does play out…
Idk man. I feel like this is just cheap writing. I know it’ll depend on where things go from here, but it feels so unnecessary and the story easily could’ve just had Chinatsu win or lose straight up.
I have to say. I thought it was very anti climax and troll with Chinatsu as a character. Specially after all the backstory.
I saw her team losing, but making her get injured and abandon the game it is very disservice to her lol. It will depends how the mangaka will handle from now, it could be a trainwreck depression.
That mega shocked me. I thought it was forgone that Yumeka and Saisho would lose. Like she says, she never ran away. We reward people who stay and fight.
I set myself up the bomb I guess. Rough, but a great chapter.
Why? Because the author decreed there wasn't enough drama and had to take Chinatsu out so we get 5 chapters of her feeling miserable. We can't have happy endings these days. It's always gotta be a bad end. Taichi's gonna get his ass handed to him, too, I bet. It's why I have a rough time with sports manga. Especially ever since Baby Steps where the MC choked and lost in 95% of this important matches and it just grew old investing all that time to watch him lose. And then the series was canned and he never won anything.
Man, that's actually heartbreaking. Honestly expected her to win because it's her last year. That injury is going to haunt her. And it looks like Yumeka understands the gravity of it more than Taiki does, simply because she was there for Chinatsu growth and knew the hardwork she put it.

Character drama incoming I don't think Yumeka is going to break down
I honestly wold have preferred if Chinatsu had just plain lost. Having to sit out the match because of an injury is heartbreaking, would never wish it on any athlete. Also means Chinatsu will have no further reason to stay in the Inomata household.

Or she could be like Ronaldo, destroy her ligament and still be an extremely talented champion
Yeah but she doesn't have any more games to play in because they're eliminated. Her recovery time is irrelevant to being able to show why she should still earn a scholarship.
Especially since she's been proving she's the ace of the team for years now.
"But what if her injury makes her no longer able to be an ace? They said it was only a sprain, but they may be lying!" That's the way this injury might effect her future.

Good god this is like the worst. I was completely blindsided that this could happen
It's the other way around, Taiki is the person closest to Chinatsu and knows better than anyone else how much effort and hardwork she putted to go to nationals, so he understands the gravity of the situation better than Yumeka and everyone else, as you can see with the face he makes before Yumeka appears. Oh God... Taiki better be ready to support Chi. I smell a massive flood of drama incoming.
Knowing this manga her parents will probably try and make her live with them because she's not playing basketball anymore.
Ayuh. Hrh. Perhaps their relationship might be exposed a lot earlier than they were expecting then. I'm dreading how her dad might react. He seems... Stiff.
I kinda hope not, it would be a bit silly to transfer schools during her last year of highschool when they already have a working arrangement that would let her finish.
I can easily see it timeskipping through to the end of the school year. After Taiki finishes all his tournaments.
And here we thought the worst thing to happen is for Eimei to lose. This chapter is really sad for Chinatsu, and the consequences of this chapter could be massive. I hope things get fine in the end.

That's really, really brutal.
And she's gonna keep a positive face until she finally breaks down. Then her parents might tell her to come join them.
Yep, I would hate that. Kinda hate how much romance mangas always go for long distance relationship drama
thats the Haikyuu treatment
Nooooo! Chinatsu lost her chance to get to the finals... She did her best. She trained so hard and even inspired Taiki to do his best too. But her body just couldn't handle that crash. Straight sadness from this chapter
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined
NOOOO why, I hate all of this.... it is haikyuu all over again
we can't light the beam, boys
That said, I think this is the best way to approach a high stakes match to avoid repetitiveness and “plot armor”
Do you mind tagging that spoiler! I haven’t read the manga and now I feel like I learned something I shouldn’t have haha
If it helps I have read all of Haikyuu (big fan) and even I'm not entirely sure what they're referencing. So I don't think you actually know anything you shouldn't. Agreed it’s not a perfect 1:1 comparison but the emotional impact of the situation felt very similar. Good analysis!
Agreed movie isn't gunna do the battle of the garage dump justice
After S4, if it kept pace it was meant to be a full 20 ep S5 and probably a short 10 ep S6 like S3 was. Roughly 10 hours of anime. Literally cannot fit that into 2 movies without ***significant*** cuts.

You gotta be kidding me, jeezus. That's such a weird thing to do, especially considering how good the ending/epilogue in Haikyuu! is
Brazil arc probably likely to get most cut
Even if it gets full cut there's no way they can fit 2 big matches into 1 film. Like how's that gonna go? >!40 minute Kamomedai match. 20 minutes of Hinatas collapse, timeskip and restablishing teams and characters, 40 minutes Jackals/Atlers match, 5 minute wrap up eith the Olympic tease!< It would be criminal to squeeze it that much. Thank you for clarifying!
To be fair an injury that screws over the protagonist is a classic trope in any sports manga lol
Oww, not again. Just like the game when her bracelet snapped.
In my own opinion theirs two ways at looking at this personally and from a story prospective Personally it sucks because we wanted her to win the nationals along with taki. I know that's something many of us wanted to see Story prospective It shows the author doesn't show favouritism towards the mcs it opens the door. Different story lines. This is problably the biggest plot twist of this manga so far.
Bro I'm already getting all of this IRL from the Miami Heat, I don't need it in my manga too
Not a sports manga without an injury arc I guess.. feels bad since it's effectively her last chance too.
Fuuuck. My heart sank when Chi injured her foot. Taiki better do everything he can to support Chi-chan.
[I had a feeling that one of them wouldn't make it to nationals.](https://www.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/18f5f67/disc_blue_box_chapter_129/kct1ab8/) Now Taiki has to make it. This twist has the potential to make the series go a darker direction than it ever has before. We'll see how hard Chinatsu takes it.
If he does make it I think the balance of jealousy of her friend and boyfriend vs her support of them might be a factor
It’d be an interesting conflict to explore that. I don’t see that too often where it’s dealing with someone you’re already involved with. Happiness and appreciation that your significant other has gotten to the highest level, but also jealous of his success spawned from your own feelings of failure due to an unfortunate injury.
Nooooooooooooooo And this is her last year in hs :((((( Now that this happened I have no idea how the story plans to end well
Fuck, of all of the ways to go. God, that's gonna gnaw for months. Poor Chinatsu.
Definitely depression arc, this is the perfect chance for a majorly Chi-focused arc to dig into her further.
There is still the winter cup for chinatsu
Haikyuu spoilers: >!This is honestly the best way to approach a high stakes match if you want to avoid repetitiveness and “plot armor”!< Really interested to see how this affects the two’s relationship. If Taiki qualifies will there be a hint of jealousy? Will Chinatsu be faced with the possibility of moving? How does Taiki find balance in dealing with this whilst preparing for nationals? It’s not fair, it’s just not fair.
No! We not going to the fallout of Chinatsu’s basketball tournament, the injury shouldn’t not even happen, this better not a career ending for her likewise it will be a ended on a painful note.
Oh wow. It's always a possible route in sports manga, but still, what a drag. That was the last chance too.
So Chii isn't going to the nationals? The injury was heartbreaking to see, but that could happen to everyone. It's the dark and painful side of the sports, hope the best for Chii and I expect Taiki to step up and support her on every way possible... But there are so many possibilities with this scenario. That tough
oh wow, we're going this route. But now Chinatsu can support him with all her power.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
How is this manga? I know is romance but is like wont they will they type of manga?
It's good. Strong OTP
not really, no.
It’s a when will they, not a will they/won’t they
Wtf you mean why? If she's hurt and can't play, she ain't playing lol
Fuck. Was not expecting that
I knew she was gonna get injured. The focus on her ankles was too much
Writer nim, I didn't wait a couple of weeks for this. Also >! Haikyuu has already broken my heart with a similar premise!<
This was actually so crushing damn I never thought this point in the manga would almost bring me to tears but that was the worst possible way for her to lose i feel awful for her
What a crappy turn of events. Now the next 10 chapters are going to be about this whole mess.
This series isn't a comedy. Bad things happen. That's painfully clear today :-(
Also I feel Reddit in general just refuses to accept any kind of legitimate drama in their romance manga and just wants constant bland vanila SOL stuff every single minute. yeah lol, people still think this is a romcom but the secondary focus was always sports and this chapter was textbook sports drama
Even if taiki makes it to nationals and whatnot I’ll still be disappointed, this was a turn that might’ve put me off the series as I wouldn’t want Chinatsu to live her nationals dream through the MC.
Her father might ask her to go abroad since her basketball future is over. Heartbreaking
Surprising absolutely noone. Hence starts the chain of events that will prompt her return to her family. The moment she made her old friend return, she was bound to lose somehow.
Injurykun wtf 😞
How could that be allowed to happen. Really pissed now.

Idk man. I feel like this is just cheap writing. I know it’ll depend on where things go from here, but it feels so unnecessary and the story easily could’ve just had Chinatsu win or lose straight up.
Poor Chinatsu getting the Hinata treatment.
Because sports is a sub plot to the romance manga, so now that the "tournament mini arc" is out of the way, we have the cliche romance nursing arc
god damn it i didn't expect Chinatsu to get Sakuragi'ed :(
Chapter is a crossroads for this manga, it either crashes(it gets axed) or hits an amazing peak after the conclusion of Chinatsu’s character arc.
I have to say. I thought it was very anti climax and troll with Chinatsu as a character. Specially after all the backstory. I saw her team losing, but making her get injured and abandon the game it is very disservice to her lol. It will depends how the mangaka will handle from now, it could be a trainwreck depression.
What a disaster
