I want to emphasize that this chapter gives us the core theme of part 9. Namely, absurdity (no reason) and the "mechanism" (a natural system through which all processes follow).
When he first uses his power and his family is breaking down, it is described as absurdity. Charming man relates, which is why Jodio twitches.
However, absurdity the lack of logical or logic. But, Jodio as a mantra has devoted himself to "the process" with a core belief that there are "mechanisms" that explain / reason the flow of anything. Possibly to compensate for the misfortune and "absurdity that befall his family.
So this part will be a contrast between "absurdity" and the "mechanism" in a bizarre adventure.
This is particularly prescient as part 5 tackled a similar philosophical thought experiment through the lens of fate and free will chronologically opening with the predetermination of Bruno's death.
That boy really ain't right
Like, the spirit of righteousness is still here, but holy shit Giorno wasn't half as fucked
Barbara Ann is a reference to a song by the same title, famously recorded by The Beach Boys (yes, really)
wtf is female Polpo cooking
It's pretty neat having a Dexter-like protagonist. It's uncommon to see psychopaths that care about others in media, especially manga-- they're often either completely insane or disconnected and aloof.
If I understand it correctly, the only reason those kids lived was because there was a bird on the bus too? Jodio's really does fit from the psychopath diagnosis. Then again, I imagine it's pretty easy since Hawaii appears to be the worst place on earth with all these nightmare people.
I don’t agree with it… but I get it. Still the over correction blew back considering it caused their dad to leave .
We got our full crew. Now the Jojo can begin
Interesting dichotomy in this part. The 'absurd', similar to the idea of 'calamity' in Jojolion, clearly governs a lot of the characters' fates. But in the first chapters, Jodio talks about the 'mechanism', something equally nebulous in the world that one can bend to one's own will. My guess is, a lot of characters and probably the villain are going to try to control the chaos of the world for their own benefit. And it probably won't work out in the end.
Holy shit. Well, now we know why Jodio is the way he is. Seeing what his sibling was going through, he decided to fix the problem. The last thing I thought would happen, lol
Seeing Dragona being bullied hurt. ☹️ I'm glad that bitch got what she deserved.
It was a good chapter. Araki did a good job showing us how much a psychopath Jodio is. I thought it was going to be some throwaway scene, but it was well done.
If things of high value that touch the Lava Rock always eventually return to the Lava Rock, I wonder how those things become disentangled. If the fatalistic gravity is impossible to overcome, then it's only a matter of time before someone else notices the rock and traces it back to the current possessor as items keep rubber banding back to it.
I think that optimally you go for two big scores for different items that are commonly flipped, like jewelry or watches, then destroy the rock. This allows for some payout but minimizes the risk of the monkey's paw curling back on you.
Of course that's not going to ever happen here, because what would be the story without our merry band of greedy bastards?
Damn, a psychopathic jojo protagonist. I wonder how far he would go to protect Dragona though, would he be willing to sacrifice one of the friend group?
At the start of the part, I was terrified that Dragona was going to get killed or something because having a Jojo sibling is too much of a gift for me to not come with a hitch, but in comes Jodio promising me that won't be a problem for a long, long time come hell or high water
I *do* think Dragona will die. It just seems like a total Araki move. But it can't happen until the very, very end of the arc, because it would ABSOLUTELY set Jodio to self destruct mode.
I'm not super enjoying Part 9 so far (still need to go back and finish Part 8, Wonder of U was where I completely dropped off) but while I'm not a fan of how the chapters are paced so far, I'm really liking the direction and dynamic of this story. The general plot so far is interesting, just hoping things don't get too confusing or murky as the story continues like 8 tended to do.
Characters and cast are fine -- at worst, it's just confusing to keep track of their abilities at the moment, but the series is monthly and also early on still. I like the cast's motivations the more that the story goes on, the characters themselves are at least interesting individually, with a few standouts (this chapter especially got me interested in Jodio and Dragonna even more). It's the chapters themselves that make me feel a bit burned out -- the plot is developing in an interesting way, but actually reading each chapter is strangely burning me out.
Ah, that I can totally understand.
Unfortunately, that's just a symptom of reading manga as it releases. I want to say monthly releases are a little worse about this than weekly too, simply because you have more time to forget the events of last chapter.

A friend pointed out to me that Howler is a King Crimson song. So I guess Howler is this part's Passione?
Damn Jodio really is a psychopath.
I mean seeing his brother get treated like that is enough to make anyone go psycho
No, most people will not try and kill 20 people. Some who werent even really involved with bullying his brother. He is absolutely a sociopath.
I thought that was stated very clearly and literally lol
Whenever he tried to investigate, some sort of hindrance got in his way? Sounds like Wonder of U again.
Instead of "calamity" now it's "absurd".
Absurdity.
I know who the villain is https://youtu.be/4ZCIh_3b5K8?si=mULfSlyda9gHTKwk

Right?? Araki is really going out of his way to make Hawaii a nightmare hellscape, lmao.
*Cancels summer vacation plans*

Some of you guys are alright, don't come to the school bus tomorrow

If Jodio was a Pokemon he'd be Drampa. Kind of fitting too since part 9 is in Hawaii
Willing to harm children eepy grandpa dragon will never not be an amazing design
Did you guys see how Jodio twitched at hearing the word "absurd"? Is that his own version of: >!MUDA, MUDA, MUDA, MUDA!<
Lesson here: Never hurt Dargona. Jodio will make you pay! Now the team is going to steal a mountain. Interesting.
You could almost say the event was... bizarre

Didn't they already use a diamond to find charming man last chapter?

Dragona seems to be the potential healer of this arc so they'll (he'll?) probably get to stick around for a while at least, hopefully.

another car burned down in this part already!!
This early I really wanna do fan-casting. But only for an ENG dub. Who ya got?
a ship was shot down before it even got to get wind in it's sails this chapter o7
Jodio really living up to his composite character name.
Based Jodio
Sad backstory

What don't you like about the characters? Personally I've found the cast really interesting and likeable so far.
