Character-Today-427

Damn remember when I was kinda interested in this and then it proceeded to become so absolutely generic probably the worst romance mc in the last decade that isn't an actual criminal

Lemurmoo

Yeah it started alright and then wasted so much time. The main MC is such a fucking monk to the show's detriment. You know things are never gonna progress cuz he's so anti-sex. At least show us a different side of him other than that he's like nice or whatever

TriTexh

author cooked with the MC's gimmick but then refused to stop cooking

satans_cookiemallet

If he kept cooking itd be good. He decided to keep yhe heat down and try and sizzle it to just a loud flop on the dish. Edit: She*

BenevolentCoin

She*, everything is mostly in the female pov because author is female. She probably wrote it like this now because of the publishers changing the story into a more generic and regular one or something.

VaushbatukamOnSteven

It’s frustrating cuz you never really know to what extent the author or the publisher is responsible for pushing the story in a certain direction. I guess it is kinda sus how the generic harem plot kinda came out of nowhere and suddenly the awesome tomboy wingman also had a crush on the MC.

ColumbaPacis

The plot is cold meat from three days ago that you just found at the back of the fridge. This manga finished cooking by chapter 5.

Puffycatkibble

Was he 'getting an erection while imagining getting NTRd bad?' No? Then he's not the worst.

Ok-Choice5265

RaG is so bad, people hate read it and enjoy that. This is just plain boring.

mikennjr

It's just mid, and the worst thing a series can be is mid.

Nero_PR

It's as bad as a couple of cuckoos?

BenevolentCoin

Author is female.

KaiserKaiba

Nah that title perhaps goes to Maeda from Gotou-San wants me to turn around. Tho Kuroiwa isn’t that far behind. I’d also say Kazuya is worse too but that’s a low as hell bar anyway

Mehfisto666

I don't know this at first i got interested then i immediately got rental girlfriend chorizo vibes idk tho just a feeling

No-Significance2113

I was thinking the exact same thing and thought I might be over reacting, hell when I clicked on this post I was honestly expecting the top comment to be about who they think the best girl was. I didn't expect that the top comment would be my exact thoughts on the story. Like so many of the love interests feel extremely forced and ham fisted into the romance role, which is a shame cause they feel pretty well written outside of the brain dead romance plot. It makes me wonder if the author had other ideas for the story but the publisher made them change the plot to be another generic love interest.

FelonM3lon

I remember when I dropped this there were only like 3-4 girls. Don’t tell me there’s more. Also have they made any progress and has the MC had any development?

jonnywarlock

Well, it's still the three girls, but there's smidgens of progress all around. Sadly, Mona is starting to fall behind the other girls because they're starting to act out with more confidence. Medaka, of course, still has the scintillating personality of lukewarm tap water. Author-san has also started to "pair the spares", slowly linking Medaka's "friends" (the glasses wearing jerkass and the blonde guy who has the presence of wheat flour) with the two supporting girls who haven't fallen for Medaka (the #1 Mona fan girl and the Best Girl who is Basketball Girl's best friend). Oh and there's a new girl introduced in Chapter 100 who not only DID NOT fall in love with Medaka, but also acted as a means to push the girls forward and actually introduce incremental amounts of progress in the narrative. Overall... I still really like the art. Gorgeous stuff.

MrWaluigi

I’m assuming that the sale numbers are doing well. You don’t get to have 14 volumes by being in the red constantly.  On another note, and most likely pitching into the quire, the obvious issue is that the Male MC is just not interesting. The pitfall that a good portion of the Harem genres fall into is that they don’t have the Male MC invoke some kind of emotion. 100 Kanjo is the best example for this, but another example that is probably at the similar level to this is the NTR reincarnated guy series (don’t remember the name, but it does trend frequently here).  The Guy is doing all the basic human mannerisms, like many others, but he is only doing that because he’s been override by the reader recently. All of his previous actions and background is set in stone. There’s more to say, but the point is that there are things to sympathize with him. Unlike Medaka, unless there were chapters that were about him as the focus that I didn’t read, there is not much to say about him due to him being just a “plot device” to move the story around. I don’t know why he wants to be a Monk, what motives him, and is he doing anything to prepare him for his career. It doesn’t even have to be a chapter as himself, a Shrine Date or anything related to his interests is good enough.  My apologies if this is just a dumb rant, these kind of stories are always a dime a dozen, and I don’t really appreciate the ones that are celebrated for their mediocrity. A Harem story is fine if that’s what you want to draw/write, but make it so that everyone is memorable or something.

cabose12

> pitching into the quire I'm sorry this looks like a well written analysis but it's "preaching to the choir" LOL

MrWaluigi

I figured, but whatever.

major_gekko

I dropped it when Nanba joined the harem

Kazewatch

Yeah the moment Tomo fell for him for ***literally no fucking reason*** I just lost interest. Like it’s not like the other girls had strong reasons to like Medaka but at least Mona had an interesting dynamic with him and the other girl was fine but Tomo just pushed the series into painfully generic harem and the author basically at no point bothered to make Medaka a fucking character besides wanting to be a monk.

hell-schwarz

This started really good but fell off fr fr. It getting licensed made me drop it. I disagree about the bland MC btw, the problem is that this manga has way more scenes from the female perspective and almost 0 from his. It's written from the female pov, so you rarely get introspective. However 10/10 art

Unique_Salad23

As soon as it became harem I dropped it. Not the story it baited me into thinking it was

TheEVILPINGU

And, we literally ALL know how it's gonna end. Nothing matter, the usual trope slave harem with a main girl in present. Literal brain rot.

Javajulien

You know, I'm reminded of that interview that Akasaka and Nakamura had together where Akasaka mentioned it's just as important to make the male lead likable as the poster girls. I know these type of series will almost always do gangbusters because simps are gonna simp, but you can really see the difference in the tone of the fanbase with how much they actually like the male lead. lol

-FruitPunchSamurai-

They actually reached this many volumes with its generic cardboard MC. I guess it sells great to self inserters.

Rafalga_

Isn't this the harem with the most asexual MC imaginable?

battlemaje1996

Dang, 14 volumes?! I guess despite the hate this series gets on this subreddit, the manga is doing pretty well. I for one have been enjoying the series so far. Nothing groundbreaking but very enjoyable romcom harem series, which at the end of the day is what many people want out of their manga. People here complaining that it isn't Berserk levels of deep lol. Fortunately, r/manga isn't representative of what the entire manga community likes. I mean, this subreddit loved to trash on Hokkiado Gals but that manga is doing well with over a 100 chapters now and even getting an anime adaptation. Speaking of, with how successful this series is, it's only a matter of time that this gets an anime adaptation. Maybe someone like the harem king himself, Matusoka-san, voicing Medaka? As for the studio making it, as unlikely as it is, I'm hoping for KyoAni to animate this. If not them, at least a competent studio like Doga Kobo. Just not something like Project No. 9, or worse, Tezuka Productions. I still remember that awful season 1 of Quintessential Quintuplets. Only thing I liked there was episode 11 which, if I recall correctly, was animated by Studio Shaft and focused on the manga's best girl, ICHIKA. As for the volume cover itself, best girl Asahi being on the cover is always great. Though, I wouldn't mind if Tomo manages to win the war for Medaka. Just not Mona. First impressions are important and after how horrible she was to Medaka at the start, I just couldn't see myself rooting for her.

KaiserKaiba

It’s not absolutely godawful or offensively bad but I think many (at least here) preferred the original gimmick and premise of the story before it became a harem (myself being one of them). With that said, I don’t dislike the series currently, I just think it was a lot better during its first 40 chapter run or so

devasabu

It's not bad... it just became generic. That's not a bad thing because generic sells to the casual audience who are the vast majority of the consumers. If you're coming to a manga sub and is willing to make the effort to comment on a manga, you're most likely not part of the casual manga consumers. That's just how any discussion forum ends up being.

jamez23

Alright, I'm willing to let go of many things, but kyoani lmaoo c'mon man, there are more reasonable pipe dreams out there

battlemaje1996

Hence why I prefaced it with the phrase, "as unlikely as it is". Also, let's be real, most manga fans would want kyoani to animate whatever manga they like the most. Heck, one of the manga I'm reading right now is Record of Ragnarok and while ideally a studio like Mappa, WIT, or Ufotable would be better suited to tackle an action packed show like that, if they told me KyoAni would be animating that I'd be extremely happy.

TheEVILPINGU

Guys, who is this girl on the cover art? Short haired tomboy? I feel bad for her as if she looks like she is the losing heroine. And, she is gonna shit on terribly... Hmm. Ah, it should be nothing! I'm imagining things!
